2012 Annual Report - Columbus Symphony
Columbus Symphony Orchestra
2011-12 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
We are honored to share the Columbus Symphony Orchestra’s
2011-12 annual report with you and provide an overview of our many
accomplishments for the 61st season.
We trust that you will learn more about our financial stability, our loyal
and generous donors, our hundreds of volunteers who give countless
hours of time and talents – all of which allows us to serve the
community through artistically excellent performance and education.
Our vision is this: rooted in fine classical traditions, our excellence,
flexibility, and collaborative culture attract the best musicians,
guest artists, and performers while developing inquisitive and
engaged audiences. Our orchestra operates under a business model
that embraces excellence, fiscal discipline, and sustainability as
benchmarks of success. We want to be here for many years to come!
And here is the reason – it’s the music!
From the opening night power and conviction of Carmina Burana to
the subtle magic of the “French Feast” program, our Music Director
Jean-Marie Zeitouni led our fine musicians with confidence and
infectious enthusiasm for the Masterworks Series. People of all ages
enjoyed the Pops, both indoors and out, especially as over 30,000
flocked downtown to attend the first summer Picnic with the Pops
from the Columbus Bicentennial Stage on the Columbus Commons.
And our Education programs keep the music coming for the next
generation.
We are so grateful for our talented partners in performance from all
over the world as well as our own conductors, CSO Chorus, and six
Youth Orchestras. What sustains and supports these performances are
the strong partnerships with Franklin County, the City of Columbus,
corporations, local school districts, and hundreds of individual
supporters and volunteers.
On behalf of the musicians, volunteers, administration, and the entire
Board of Trustees, we invite you to review our 2011–12 annual report
and join us soon at a performance of your Columbus Symphony
Orchestra.
Sincerely,
Martin Inglis

Mission Statement
The mission of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
(CSO) is to advance a symphony orchestra of the
highest possible artistic standard for the enrichment,
enjoyment, and well-being of central Ohio.
In addition, the education mission of the Orchestra is
to educate and entertain people of all ages to foster
talent, create future audiences, nurture intellectual
development, and spark creativity.

2011–2012
Season Highlights
I
n the 61st season as the longest-standing
professional orchestra in central Ohio, the
Columbus Symphony served nearly 115,000
individuals who attended a live orchestra
performance and/or participated in an education
program. In addition, a radio audience of 60,000
enjoyed Saturday night Classical performances over
the WOSU-FM network of radio stations.
This was the first season entirely crafted by music
director Jean-Marie Zeitouni, who conducted much
of the Masterworks Series. He received high praise
for leading the orchestra in artistically-inspiring
performances and interacting with audiences to
make the music understandable and accessible.
For the first time in the CSO’s history, four of the
Masterworks programs were performed in the 925seat Southern Theatre, showcasing the orchestra
with unparalleled acoustics, an intimate setting, and
an educational component.
The Pops Series garnered the highest attendance in
recent years, and the outdoor Nationwide Insurance
Picnic with the Pops moved downtown for exciting
performances on the new Columbus Bicentennial
Pavilion at the Columbus Commons.
The Orchestra’s reach goes beyond mature
classical music lovers to learners of all ages through
Education and Community Outreach Programs.
Six youth orchestras, concerts and curriculum
materials for school children, concerts for families,
and music talks for adults bring joy, delight, and
learning to the community.
Columbus composer Donald Harris’
Symphony No. 2 was premiered
in April . This piece had been cocommissioned by the Koussevitsky
Music Foundation and the CSO.
2
Masterworks Series
The CSO presented its own extraordinary soloists,
140-member volunteer chorus, and terrific guest
artists from the classical world for this 13-program
29-concert series. The exuberant opening night on
October 13 featured Maestro Zeitouni conducting
Carl Orff’s explosive Carmina Burana with the
Chorus, Columbus Children’s Choir, and three
exceptional guest vocalists. Soloists for the season
included violinists Rachel Barton Pine and Yossif
Ivanov, cellist Sara Sant’Ambrogio, vocalists Michele
Losier and Alisa Jordheim, and pianists Stewart
Goodyear and duo Anna Polonsky and Orion Weiss.
Highlights included the world premiere of Columbus’
own Donald Harris’ Symphony No. 2, the Mahler 6th
Symphony, and a Shakespeare-inspired program
with CATCO. The CSO welcomed esteemed guest
conductors Günther Herbig, Matthias Bamert, Rossen
Milanov, and Nicholas McGegan. A major event was
the Gala performance of extraordinary violinist Gil
Shaham at the Southern Theatre in January. This
series was generously sponsored by Battelle.
Picnic with the Pops
The Nationwide Insurance Picnic with the Pops
launched its 29th season with a move downtown!
The CSO was thrilled to see nearly 30,300 people
flock downtown to celebrate the first summer of
performances from the Columbus Bicentennial
Pavilion on the Columbus Commons. Over seven
weekends, audiences were entertained by Three
Dog Night, The Temptations, Wicked’s Idina Menzel,
the Music of Led Zeppelin, Dennis DeYoung: The
Music of Styx, and Peabo Bryson, in addition to
the Patriotic Pops and the ever-inspiring Ohio
State University Marching Band. Popcorn Pops, the
interactive, kid- and family-friendly outdoor series
included pre-concert activities, and is helping the
Columbus Commons become the place to be for
families with young children. The CSO is confident
that this event will continue to gain momentum
to revitalize downtown and gather new audiences
for our orchestra. This move and summer season
was made possible by the tremendous support of
Nationwide Insurance.
Pops Series
Never a dull moment was heard in the Pops Series,
which attracted a diverse crowd of more than
15,000 in the Ohio Theatre for a variety of lively
performances. Jean-Marie conducted the opening
Opera to Broadway program full of superb voices,
lush orchestrations, evocative lyrics and expressive
melodies from the best of both worlds. Other CSO
performances featured a salute to Frank Sinatra,
a Gershwin program with pianist Kevin Cole, a
sell-out crowd for legendary icon Johnny Mathis,
and Disney in Concert with magical music from
the movies. Of course, no Pops season would be
complete without the cherished family tradition of
Holiday Pops including the CSO Chorus, Columbus
Children’s Choir, and Santa. The conductors were
Matt Catingub, Michael Berkowitz, Columbus’ own
Ron Jenkins and Peter Stafford Wilson, and favorite
Pops conductor Albert-George Schram. American
Electric Power was the gracious sponsor of the
Pops Series.

Education and
Community Outreach
Photo: Reflections Events Group
The Symphony’s Education and Community
Outreach programs flourished as a critical part of
making symphonic music accessible for all ages.
Overall, nearly 14,300 individuals participated in or
attended an event. Concerts for Kids and Popcorn
Pops presented musical adventures for children
and their families with pre-concert music, learning
and fun activities. The musical fun included Fiery
Fiddlin’ and Fairy Tales!, Rhythm of the Americas,
Teddy Bears Picnic, and Pajama-Rama. Four
Young People’s Concerts were performed for
nearly 5,000 Columbus area school children/
teachers. Pre-concert workbooks and CD’s for
students and teachers on the themes Words and
Notes: Poetry in Music, S is for Symphony, and
Nationalism in Music, integrating the Ohio Content
Standards for music education curriculum, were
provided to schools to further enhance the concert
experience. The Columbus All City Orchestra
continued for its fifth season, providing 55 talented
students a tuition-free orchestra experience. Other
programs included: Youth Orchestras, involving
350 of the brightest young musicians aged
9–18 in five ensembles; Backstage Tours; Music
Educator Awards, honoring teachers and raising
awareness of music education; Young Musician’s
Competition/Showcase; 28 Music Talks, preconcert lectures hosted by WOSU’s Christopher
Purdy prior to each Classical performance; and
Instant Encore for live music samples.

Youth Orchestras
The fifth annual Columbus All City Orchestra
performed on May 23, 2012 in the downtown
Southern Theatre and gave 55 talented Columbus
City high school students an opportunity to
rehearse with a professional conductor, be
coached by adult professional musicians, and
perform in a professional theatre for 300 family
and community members.
As a string specialist in the Columbus City
Schools wrote:
“It evolves into more than an orchestra concert, it
provides a sense of accomplishment and provides
a positive experience for our students which
gives the community a sense of pride…reflected
through proud parents, relatives, and community
members.”
This is just one of the six Youth Orchestra training
and performing ensembles for talented young
instrumentalists. Students in grades 3–12 from
central Ohio participate in weekly rehearsals
and 20 scheduled performances of the Youth
Orchestra, Cadet Orchestra, Chamber Strings, and
Junior Strings Orchestra. The Youth Orchestra
Summer Pops came together for the fourth season
in a camp experience and performed at a Popcorn
Pops concert as well as the Statehouse lawn
in July.
To quote a teacher from a rural school many miles
away after attending the November 2011 Young
People’s Concert:
“Most of our low-income children have never been
to Columbus, much less a “classic” concert in the
Ohio Theatre. This is a memory many of my students
remember as adults — a great opportunity for
students in our rural school.”
From the mother of a 6-year-old child with Spinal
Muscular Atrophy (SMA) whose whole family
attended the March PNC Arts Alive Concerts
for Kids:
“He LOVED it! There is a little musician inside him!
He also couldn’t stop laughing with the Syncopated
Clock song. I haven’t seen that full belly laugh in a
while. Not only a joy for him but a joy for us as well!
We all enjoyed the afternoon and truly look forward
to attending a Popcorn Pops this summer. Thank
you and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra for
everything. You are a blessing to Columbus.”

Artistic Highlights
Under the music director Jean-Marie Zeitouni, three
new musicians joined the orchestra for the 2011–12
season after a competitive audition process.
Karl Pedersen joined as principal viola at the start
of the 2011–12 season, coming to the CSO after
three years with the New World Symphony and two
years as principal viola of the Breckenridge Music
Festival. He has recorded and performed with the
Kansas City Symphony, and performed with the
Virginia Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Cedar
Rapids Symphony, Quad Cities Symphony, and as
concertmaster with the Oskaloosa and Ottumwa
Symphonies.
Alicia Hui, the new principal second violin, began
her musical studies at the age of four and made her
orchestral debut at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony
Hall in Baltimore, Maryland at age nine. Since then,
she has soloed with numerous orchestras, including
the Arlington Symphony, Williamsburg Symphony
Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony, the Zurich
Symphony Orchestra, the Latvian Philharmonic
Chamber Orchestra, the Firelands Symphony
Orchestra, and the CIM Orchestra.
Genevieve Briggs became second flute, coming from
the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, where she had
been second flute and piccolo since 2007. Before
becoming a member of the Alabama Symphony
Orchestra, she was a member of The United States
Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” in Washington D.C.
Personnel Changes
The 2011-12 season also marked the retirement of
long-time general manager Susan Rosenstock who
had served the orchestra for over 30 years. Susan
“has been the heart and soul of the symphony for
many years and has been an indispensible resource
to the organization,” stated Roland Valliere,
president and chief creative officer. Pavana Stetzik
was named general manager, moving up from her
role as orchestra personnel manager. Mr. Valliere
also stepped down as president and chief creative
officer in August after a three-year association,
during which he was instrumental in the CAPA
partnership transition, hiring the new music director,
and rebuilding musician relations.

Conductor Profiles
Jean-Marie Zeitouni was named music director of
the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in October 2010.
He has emerged as one of North America’s brightest
young conductors and has been warmly received
by musicians and audiences alike. He embraces his
role to inspire, educate, and entertain central Ohio
audiences through the performance of high quality,
exciting, and accessible live classical music. His
eloquent yet fiery style, in repertoire ranging from
Baroque to contemporary music, results in regular
re-engagements throughout North America. He also
was recently appointed principal conductor and
artistic director designate of I Musici de Montreal.
Additionally, he enjoys a long association with
Les Violons du Roy and now serves as principal
guest conductor. His CD with the ensemble, titled
“Piazzola,” garnered him a 2007 JUNO Award for
Classical Album of the Year in the category Solo or
Chamber Ensemble.
In addition to music director Jean-Marie Zeitouni,
the CSO proudly recognizes the work of our fine
conductors over the season.
Peter Stafford Wilson, Associate Conductor, has
served the Columbus
Symphony since 1990
and has appeared on all
of the CSO’s subscription,
education and outreach
series, including
collaborative performances
with BalletMet. Wilson leads
the nationally renowned
Columbus Symphony
Youth Orchestras program,
conducting the senior
orchestra, the Columbus
Symphony Youth Orchestra; the Columbus All
City Orchestra, comprised of students from the
Columbus City Schools; and the Youth Orchestra
Summer Pops. Peter is an indispensible force in
the education programs, conducting all the Young
People’s Concerts which attracted thousands of
school children to the Ohio Theatre this year.
Albert-George Schram, a native of the Netherlands,
currently holds several positions in the musical
world, and is well known to Columbus audiences for
his wonderful Pops and Picnic performances since
1979. An audience and family favorite, Schram’s
three decades with the Symphony marks the longest
tenure of any conductor with a major U.S. orchestra.
Albert-George Schram delights young
& old alike at Concerts for Kids
Ronald Jenkins has been the director of the
Columbus Symphony
Chorus and Chamber Chorus
since September 1982. The
Chorus, an all-volunteer
group, just celebrated its
51st anniversary. Jenkins
traditionally leads the CSO
Chorus and orchestra in the
Holiday Pops concerts, a
cherished family tradition
for Symphony patrons.
This season, he prepared
the entire Chorus for
performances in, among others, Orff’s Carmina
Burana and Duruflé’s Requiem.

Gala Celebration
The CSO’s Annual Gala was celebrated in January
with Musical America’s 2012 Instrumentalist of
the Year Gil Shaham performing an exquisite
rendition of Brahms Violin Concerto with the
Orchestra. The superb acoustics of the Southern
Theatre perfectly delivered Mr. Shaham’s
uncommon balance of virtuosity and warmth.
Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni also led the
CSO in a glorious performance of Beethoven’s
Symphony No. 7. Over $215,000 was raised in
support of the Orchestra.

Anne Melvin receives
the 2011 Outstanding
Philanthropist award
“Anne is … just
bursting at the
seams with
enthusiasm for
the orchestra.”
—Betsy Sturdevant, CSO Principal Bassoonist
Long-time Symphony supporter and
trustee Anne Melvin was presented
the highest award of 2011 Outstanding
Philanthropist by the Central Ohio
Chapter of the Association for
Fundraising Professionals. This welldeserved award resulted from a conomination from the Orchestra and
the Columbus Museum of Art, and
reflects all the CSO family’s admiration
for Anne and her many contributions.
Now serving as a CSO honorary trustee
after twice serving on the board, Anne
is an ardent champion of the Orchestra
and an advocate for music education
and outreach to children. Without the dedicated
support of Anne and her husband Noel — and
their firm belief in our mission to teach, educate,
and inspire — the Orchestra would not be the
artistically excellent organization that performs
today. Anne’s passion for classical music permeates
her financial support which is directed to artistic
excellence, annual fund campaigns, challenge
grants, and numerous strategic purposes. She is a
tireless champion who constantly searches out best
practices of other organizations and brings fresh
ideas and strategies to the forefront.
Another trustee recognized at the same event
was Neil Mortine, President and CEO
of Fahlgren Mortine marketing and
communications firm, which received
the 2011 Outstanding Small Corporation
for their many positive contributions to
the community.
Rusty Ranney (l),
President & CEO of Live!
Technologies, receives
a 2011 GCAC Business
Arts Partnership Award.

Congratulations also go to LIVE!
Technologies who received a CSOnominated 2011 Community Arts

Columbus Arts Council for their work
in producing nearly a decade of the
outdoor Picnic with the Pops series,
and many other contributions to the CSO and
Columbus art scene.

Volunteers and Supporters
Picnic with the Pops volunteers were
pivotal in making the summer season
at Columbus Commons a success
Every year the great unsung heroes of the
Orchestra are the long-serving volunteer and
auxiliary groups — The Women’s Association
of the Columbus Symphony (WACSO), the
Orchestra League (CSOL), and the Picnic with the
Pops volunteer core. Once again, these groups
dedicated their time and talents to share their love
of symphonic music for the benefit and enjoyment
of musicians and audiences. WACSO members
showered appreciation on CSO musicians, the
Chorus, visiting artists, and education programs
while raising substantial funds through events like
Passport to the Derby and pansy and pecan sales.
The Orchestra League also supported the musicians
though Café Concerts and a golf outing that was
so much more than golf! This year the indispensible
Picnic volunteers assisted the complex logistics
involved in moving to the downtown venue.
These are just examples of the many ways these
volunteers honor the past and help the Orchestra
continue to grow and prosper.
Finally, the many “sung” contributions of the CSO
Chorus, the all-volunteer 140 powerhouse of voices,
cannot be overstated. For its 51st season with the
Orchestra, the Chorus continued to excel under the
direction of Chorus Master Ronald J. Jenkins. Under
his leadership for the past 29 years, the Chorus has
grown both in quality of its performances and in
the diversity of the classical repertoire. The Chorus
appeared in five artistically excellent programs from
the powerful Carmina Burana to the eloquent and
moving Duruflé Requiem to the best-loved musical
tradition of the Holiday Pops.

Financial Highlights
Major highlights for fiscal year 2012 include
completing the second successful year of the
CSO partnership with the Columbus Association
for the Performing Arts (CAPA), finishing the
2011-12 fiscal year with a modest surplus through
continued careful fiscal management, and moving
the summer season of Picnic with the Pops to the
Columbus Commons. This is now the CSO’s fifth
consecutive year to have a balanced budget. The
innovative CSO/CAPA partnership has been hailed
nationally as a possible new business model for
arts organizations, in an environment where many
orchestras are facing challenging circumstances. To
that end, the CSO was invited to lead two plenary
sessions on “orchestras ascending” at the June 2012
League of American Orchestras national conference
in Dallas.
Increased Stability
As reported last year, the strength and stability of
the CAPA partnership has been critical to regaining
the confidence of many community donors and
establishing the relevance and importance of the
CSO to the community. A prime example of this
is completing the third year of an unprecedented
three-year public/private transition funding
arrangement supported by Franklin County,
the City of Columbus, and matching private
corporations. This commitment to stabilize the
CSO’s operations has resulted in $2,512,500 in
combined public/private support over the past
three years. The goals of the transition fund and
the CSO/CAPA partnership have been to rebuild
the balance sheet and organization’s cash position,
balance the budget for fiscal years 10-12, rebuild
board and staff, and develop a new business model.
The CSO has made tremendous strides on each
of these goals, and continues to focus on moving
forward with a new business model that addresses
the artistic rebuilding of the orchestra within a
framework that the community will support.

Financial Summary for
Fiscal Year 2012
Earned vs. Contributed Revenue
Total assets at the end of fiscal 2012 were over $3.1
million. The operating surplus was $112,000, which
increased unrestricted net assets from $600,000 to
$712,000. This is the fifth consecutive year the Orchestra
has concluded its season with an operating surplus.
Total operating revenue was $7.8 million in 2012, a
reduction in revenue of $259,000 from fiscal 2011. Total
operating expenses were $7.7 million, of which $6.3
million was expended on programs and mission. Every
$1 of operating revenue generated by the Symphony
resulted in $.82 of direct program service expenditures
to serve Symphony audiences.
The Symphony is grateful to the many people and
organizations that volunteer their time and effort
in various ways. In addition to the in-kind gifts and
contributed services of $428,000 included in the
financial results, over 1,000 volunteers provided
countless hours of service not reflected here.
