THE
Bishop John J. Snyder High School
Fall 2015
From Deacon
David Yazdiya, Principal
“Prepare the Way…”
The patron saint of Bishop John J. Snyder High School,
John the Baptist, proclaims that we prepare the way. We
take this charge seriously and have accomplished great
things this year. The many programs at Bishop Snyder High School
continue to challenge and develop our students academically,
athletically, spiritually, and emotionally. Our academic program thrives
with current technology and best practices to ensure that our students
are prepared for the rigors of college life and the career paths they will
choose.
Our B.Y.O.D. (bring your own device) initiative has proven to be the
right choice for our students, giving them the ability to select the device
best suited to their individual learning style. To serve that end, we
renovated the Tierney Media Center. The media center is designed with
collaboration and project based learning in mind. Desks and tables are
on casters, enabling students to configure them in a manner that suits
the assignment at hand; a MediaScape mobile board is available,
providing collaboration among students to share ideas and work
together; a projector and a SmartBoard is available for students to
utilize for presentations and class projects. So that our students will
always be encouraged to read for leisure, a comfortable seating area is
set apart for that purpose. A charging station and several devices,
including iPads, laptops, and Chromebooks are part of the new space
that draws students to the media center, awakening their sense of
collaboration and productivity.
Principal’s Service Award
Drs. George & Mary Schmieder
In 2003, George and Mary Schmieder chose to send their
eldest child, Shawn, to Snyder. Shawn (’07) was followed by his
sisters Katie (’09), Mary Grace (’14) and Christa (’15) all of
whom graduated with top academic honors and athletic
successes driven by their strong Catholic faith. Not only did
George and Mary entrust Bishop John J. Snyder High School
with the education of their children, but they were exceptionally
generous with their time, talent and treasure.
It would be impossible to list the number of programs and
people that have benefitted from the generosity of George and
Mary. So many gifts were given anonymously and quietly that
our community never realized the depths of their compassion.
George and Mary’s public gifts enabled our 2008 capital
We prepared our 104 seniors to enter the next
phase of their lives when they graduated in May.
Expansion of the Naviance program in Guidance has
given our students the edge they need for acceptance
into the country’s competitive colleges and
universities. Our Advanced Placement pass rate of
88% is impressive, outranking many of the local
public and private schools and is one of the highest in
the county and in the state. With many receiving
scholarships, this year’s senior class earned nearly
$6,500,000 in scholarship monies to attend college.
They also recorded over 25,000 hours of service while at BJS. Over the
course of their four years at Snyder, students attend annual retreats,
participate in Mass and Adoration, Reconciliation services, and many
prayer services. This year’s senior class is definitely prepared to serve.
As we continue to provide a solid, Catholic education, we want to
ensure that our students are prepared; prepared for the rigors of
college; prepared to make important and crucial decisions at the right
time; and prepared to follow the example of Jesus Christ, our teacher,
our source of strength, our Lord. John the Baptist drew attention away
from himself and always pointed to the Lord. As the patron saint of our
school, we want to bring his message of “preparing the way…” to the
faculty, staff, students, and families of our community. We will use that
motto in some of our literature as a reminder of why we exist as a
Catholic school: to prepare our students to be citizens who will
contribute to the betterment of society and who can compete in the
market place all the while embracing the values of the Gospel of Jesus
Christ and being above all, his witnesses to everyone they meet.
Thank you for supporting us and our mission of Catholic education.
Deacon David Yazdiya, Principal
campaign, Building to Serve, to
succeed as well as funding our
Mary’s Garden and the Danny
Brown Track building fund.
Not only did we benefit from
their fiscal generosity, but George
and Mary continued to attend
football games long after Shawn
retired from Cardinal football
(when he moved on to play for
the University of Florida from
2007-2011) and supported
volleyball, basketball and track
teams faithfully over the years.
We are grateful to have families
such as the Schmieders as part of
our Snyder family!

Each year Bishop Estèvez, a gifted teacher, invites members of the National
Spanish Honor Societies from our diocesan high schools to gather at Nombre de
Dios Mission for a special mass. Bishop Estèvez takes the opportunity to preach
the Gospel with great passion, making use of the incredible history of the
founding of the first parish in North America. This year’s mass, which honors the
Venerable Father Félix Varela, was celebrated in the Prince of Peace church.
Prince of Peace is a votive church built in 1965 to commemorate the Mission’s
400th anniversary. It is dedicated to prayer asking God to spare the world from
atomic warfare.

Campus Ministry by Ms. Joy Pichardo
Gabriella Forte was selected as this year’s Peace in
Christ Award recipient. What sets this young
woman apart is her devotion to the Eucharist,
humble service to others and perseverance in
prayer. She served as an Extraordinary Minister of
Holy Communion and spoke at retreats about the
True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Gabriella
serves with gentleness and a sense of purpose. She
speaks about her faith with bountiful humility and love,
yet with the strongest of conviction. Following Our Lady’s
example, Gabriella points others towards Christ. She leads others mostly
by her virtuous example, living intentionally and walking in the Light of
Christ. Gabriella attends Ave Maria University.

Catholic Days at the Capitol
Twenty-seven students took a day trip to Tallahassee with
chaperons, Mr. Dan Mull and Ms. Pichardo. During the
trip, students prepared for their legislative meetings by
reviewing legislative issues and discussing questions such
as, “Why doesn’t it take a majority of jurors to send
someone to death row in the state of Florida?” In
Tallahassee, students and chaperons split into groups and
met with legislators or staff aides to discuss these issues of
importance to our Catholic faith.
Before lunch, they met with Bishop Estévez to review
what they learned through the legislative process and
spoke of life and human dignity. Participation in Catholic
Days at the Capitol provided a valuable insight into our
state government and the need for advocacy of pending
legislation which affects our Catholic faith.

Seniors visit Mission Nombre de Dios
Each Catholic School in the diocese sent
representatives to the Mass at the Rustic Altar
for a Mass that was celebrated by Father
Richard Pagano. The beautiful surroundings
of Mission Nombre de Dios provided the
perfect backdrop for the Eucharistic
Celebration. In this year of the 450th
Anniversary of the founding of the Diocese
of St. Augustine, it is important that the
history of our Catholic schools be
recognized and celebrated. Michael
Undersander, Dot Brown, Gabriella Forte and
Clare Vonderhaar attended as representatives for Bishop Snyder.

Emily Knox was selected
as one of sixteen finalists for
the First Annual Mary Awards
sponsored by St. Vincent's

Mary Awards were created to
promote the values, lifestyle
and leadership that recognize young women
like Emily who lift up our society and serve as
positive role models. She represented Bishop
Snyder High School and Most Holy Redeemer

Athletics at the April Mary Awards Dinner.
Our Lady of La Leche
Mass for the 450th
Anniversary
The senior class traveled to St. Augustine on
March 30th to tour Mission Nombre de Dios
and Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche. Bishop
Estévez asked that all diocesan high school
seniors have an opportunity to tour the grounds
and the mission. The trip afforded our seniors the
opportunity to learn the rich history of the
Diocese of St. Augustine and served as a perfect
beginning to Holy Week.
March for Life
On January 20th, 138 Snyder pilgrims
boarded an overnight bus to travel to the
nation’s capitol. After arriving at Saint John Paul
the Great High School in Dumfries, VA, we
headed into D.C. to tour the National
Holocaust Museum. That evening we attended
the Pro-life Vigil Mass at the Basilica of the
Immaculate Conception.
On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, January
22nd, we attended the Youth Rally at the DC Armory then joined hundreds of thousands of people for
the National March for Life. After the march, parishioners at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Capitol Hill
served us hot chocolate and doughnuts as we warmed up and prepared for our journey home.

The Lady Cardinals had a strong season that
saw them go 19-9, win another District
Championship, and earn a Regional Semifinal
berth. The Cardinals were led by three seniors:
Ashley Neal, Emily Knox, and Genesis
Sotomayor. Ashley Neal had her best season in
the pitching circle, Emily Knox led the team
defensively, and Genesis Sotomayor was the
vocal leader. The Lady Cardinals had 5 players hit
over .300, Alex Acevedo, Madison Jaeger, Ashley
Neal, Emily Knox, and Angela Agurkis. Freshman
catcher, Angela Agurkis, was a game changer for
the Cardinal program behind the plate, teaming
with Ashley Neal as the team’s battery. The loss of
the three seniors will hurt, but juniors Alex

and Jack McCormack broke the single game
scoring record with 41 points. The team lost in
the first round of district playoffs on a 40 foot

has a lot to be proud of and a lot to look
forward to with the leadership of our 2 seniors
Emily Knox and Theresa Vonderhaar. The
Cardinal's finished at 14-16, with key wins
over Hilliard and Duval Charter. The highlight
of the year was a dramatic 14 point comeback
with 8 minutes to go over Fernandina Beach.
The Lady Cardinals took the eventual regional
champs to the wire with a six point loss. The
future looks bright as we only lost 2 seniors
and the core of the team was made up of
sophomores.
Boys Golf
Head Coach: Doug Ramsey
The Cardinals, led by Senior Angelo Napolitano, finished the season as
district champions. We had big wins over district rivals Trinity and swept
Eagles View in multiple matches throughout the season. The team battled
every match and proved they belonged in a tough district. Angelo was a
medalist in each of the district matches he competed in and finished in the
top three in all matches he played. Sophomore JP Garrido and senior Joel
Garrido both were contributors week in and week out.
Team MVP: Angelo Napolitano

Competitive Cheerleading
Coaches: Angi Brannan and Karsun Bragg
The Cardinal cheerleaders welcomed two new coaches last season, Angi
Brannan and Karsun Bragg. Snyder cheerleading consisted of 21 sideline
cheerleaders and 16 competition cheerleaders.
Led by Captain Kaitlin Coleman, the competitive squad made their first
appearance at the UCA camp in Tallahassee where they won their division.
At that camp, four cheerleaders were selected as All-American, Seniors
Kaitlin Coleman, Holly Biliter and Lauren Dobrie and Sophomore, Lindsey
Barrett. State Championships were held in Orlando where the team
finished in the Top Ten.
Football
Head Coach: Travis Markoski
The Cardinals ended the season with a 4-5 record. This team consisted of 10
seniors, 8 juniors, 8 sophomores, and 11 freshmen. The highlight of the year was
the leadership role that the seniors provided for this young team. The offensive
line, directed by Cory Salt while anchored by Ryan du Chanois and Matthew
Tanner, was one of the strongest in the last four years. They have left their mark
in the record books with a game high 494 yards on the ground against Christ
Church. The defensive efforts were led by Austin Barton with 180 career tackles
which is second all time in the Cardinal history book. Chase Gunnell leaves the
team tied for second in the history book for interceptions with 6. This was the
first graduating class of the McCrae era, and the team finished this season with a
10-3 victory over St. Josephs Academy.
Matthew Tanner was selected to the 1st team OL All NE Florida.
Matthew Tanner is surrounded by his teammates as he signs his letter of
intent to play at East Arizona.
Boys Soccer
Head Coach: Christopher DeLuca
BJS boys soccer defeated Providence 2-0 in the district
quarterfinals; the first time in 8 years, the boys team beat
Providence and earned a semifinal appearance. The boys’
entered the district semifinals undefeated in the
previous 7 games. After graduating only 3 seniors, the
boys’ team has a solid core group returning for their
sophomore and junior years and are poised to
improve upon last season's successes.
Girls Soccer
Head Coach: Jacob O’Brien
The girls soccer team found success through the
team's leadership and core of strong players. Seniors
Peyton Piotrowski, Genesis Sotomayor, and Bianca Loor led
a young but hungry team, to a record of 9-7 in a very difficult
district. Peyton was selected as a First Coast Senior All-Star and led the
team in scoring. The team will continue to grow and improve and hope to
contend for a district title in the future.

The track and field team had a successful year considering the young

our district. Even with our young team, leaders emerged and pushed to get
the most out of our talent. 11
school records were broken,
and every athlete on the
team set personal records for

tremendous growth of the
team. Highlights of the
season include Spenser

school records in the 1600M

was the record setting girls 4x800M, Relay of Michaela Scurti, Kayla
McManama, Alexis McClung, and Mason Tuttle. Showing the promise of
what’s to come, the boys placed 2nd and the girls 4th at the Nease

core of underclassmen with which to build for the future.

Jessica Lutz, and consisted mainly of junior
leadership. The MVP, Menina Barton, led the girls
in points scored at swimming meets during the
season and will be a coaches captain pick in the
fall. The boys were lead by Ian Belle in points
scored at swimming meets during the season. The
team had 8 swimmers qualify for the regional

Wrestling
Head Coach: Jeremy Mosely
Bishop Snyder went through
significant change after an amazing year
in 2014 when the Cardinals won the
district title. The biggest change was the
schedule, which was extended well into
March, interfering with baseball season
and taking several returners out of the
wrestling lineup.
Despite the changes, The Cardinals
managed a 9-19 dual meet record. "Our Coach Travis Markoski, Nathan and Nick Cleland and

measure our success," said first year
coach, Jeremy Mosley. "Individually, we wrestled 276 times, and we won 168. That shows the
kind of work these guys put in.” The Cards, despite being the smallest team in the district, placed
6th in the district tournament.
Individually, we had one champion, one runner-up, one 3rd place finish and two 4th place
finishes. All five of Cardinal wrestlers advanced to the FHSAA Regional Championship. After a
12th place finish in a very talented region, we advanced two Seniors, Nathan Cleland and
Nicholas Cleland, to the FHSAA 1A State Championship in Kissimmee, Florida. Nathan (44-11)
and Nick (35-17) capped off stellar careers which saw them both break several school records.
Both wrestlers will attend Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida.
Weightlifting
Volleyball
Head Coach: Kammie Stackhouse
Head Coach: Brian “Jake” McCrae
The weightlifting team saw a lot of young lifters step up. A major standout
on the team this season was Joey Fisher, who is now on the Cardinal record
board as a sophomore, and achieved a personal record every week. The
Cardinals made some great strides as the season progressed, led by seniors
Cory Salt, Drew
Portell and Austin
Barton.
The weightlifting
team is becoming a
force to be
reckoned with
throughout the area
and with all of the
returning lifters, the
Cardinals plan on
making a lot more
noise in the
upcoming season. Joey Fischer and Drew Portell prepare for district
competition.
Page 12
The volleyball team finished the season with
an 18-9 record. Season highlights were
beating Fernandina Beach and winning the
Pierson-Taylor Invitational. Next year’s
team will miss the graduating seniors:
Christa Schmieder, Angela Bradford,
Katy McDaniel, Ciara Quinn and
Ashley Spence. Each of these young
women played an important role in the
success of this year’s team, and their
leadership will be missed. Angela
Bradford is the second volleyball player in
Snyder history to move on to play
volleyball in college and has signed a letter of
intent at St. Andrew’s College in South Carolina.

In 2006, the Vallencourt family established a permanent
endowment to create the Vallencourt Scholarship. Each spring,
members of the Junior Class are invited to apply for consideration
as a Vallencourt recipient. A committee of faculty members
reviews the applications, and one young man and one young
woman are selected and announced at the awards ceremony in
May.
The Vallencourt scholarship was created in honor of F.E. and
Barbara Vallencourt, North Florida pioneers who, through hard
work, grit, determination, and gratitude, built a successful business
and raised a family steeped in faith, leadership and love.
The Vallencourt Scholarship recipients for 2015 are Alex
Alex Brennan, co-recipient of the Vallencourt Family Scholarship.
Brennan and Saebra Reed. Saebra and Alex attribute their
determination to their parents’ influence, maintaining positive mental
attitudes and continuing to be grateful for every blessing God has granted
them.
Cardinal Award
Teague Sanders was was chosen by faculty members as the winner of
this year’s Cardinal Award. It is the most prestigious award given to an
underclassman. Teague exemplifies the virtues important at Snyder: hardwork,
compassion,
service to others;
plus he’s an allaround good guy!

Bianca Forte and Courtney Cowman are this year’s recipients of the
underclassmen Scholar Athlete Award. The Scholar Athlete Award
recognizes student-athletes who have earned at least three varsity letters
and maintained a minimum cumulative 4.0 GPA.

Homecoming
The Student Government
Association delivered a
Homecoming Week to remember.
Over 300 students kicked-off the
festivities with a Casino-themed
dance. The next week, students
hung up their uniforms in favor of
dressing up as animals, huntingenthusiasts, cartoon characters,
and younger versions of
themselves. Senior and Junior girls
clashed at the Powder Puff flag
football game with the Seniors
dominating. Homecoming Week
came to a close at Friday’s football
game when Deacon Yazdiya
crowned the Homecoming King,
Charles Christ, and Queen, Jessica James. Thanks to the SGA for
putting on a great event: Sean Yumul, President; Josh Culberson, Vice
President; N'ya Sanfiel, Chaplain; Dot Brown, Treasurer; Anna
Alvarado, Secretary; Charles Christ, Senior Rep; Caroline Cooksey,
Junior Rep; Michael Hagadorn and Reagan Miller, Sophomore Reps;
and Shelby Hugo and Jack Le Favour, Freshman Reps.
The Junior-Senior Prom was held at the University Club in downtown
Jacksonville and was a fun night of dancing and music. Cory Salt and
Barbara Dias Carneiro were crowned King and Queen for 2015.

The Cardinettes, led by Coach
Hope Schiller, performed at school
events and competed in local dance
competitions. Cardinettes Co-Captains
Lauren McMahon and Alessandra
Jensen had the distinguished honor of
being invited to and performing in the
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
A Cardinal Christmas, a new spin
on our traditional Christmas programs,
was a tour de force showcasing all of
BJS's fine arts areas. The new gallery look, courtesy of art teacher Andrea
Bottin, was impressive and in keeping with our college preparatory goals.
Over 100 students from guitar classes, soloists and ensembles from
chorus and
band
participated.
Caroline
Yazdiya,
Michael
Undersander,
Keeley Doski,
Matthew
Harris, Dylan
Gobotan, Ana Mancebo, all under the direction of Brian Urso, provided
beautiful background music while attendees viewed and purchased
handmade ornaments created by art students. The evening closed with a
traditional concert of Advent and Christmas music.
The Drumline, led by captains Michael Undersander and Miriam
Ganas, played at school events, games, and at many great community
events, including school pep rallies and festivals at St. Matthew's, Sacred
Heart, and Mary Queen of Heaven.
Our chorus joined adult choirs in the
diocese to create prayerful and
inspiring music for the Eucharistic
Congress at the Prime Osborn
Convention Center.
The drama club, produced “Little
Women” in the fall and "Anything
Goes" in April.
Fine Arts Night was held in April
with art teacher Andrea Bottin taking
the lead in designing a show that had
the look and feel of a formal art exhibition, showcasing art created by art
and photography students. College art teachers and artists from the
greater Jacksonville community attended. Portfolio and 2D/3D
Composition students showcased a collection of their best works. 2D
students highlighted their concentration drawings and 3D students
experimented with a clay project focusing on ocean textures. For their
finals, students created a self-portrait statement piece employing any 3D
medium of their choice. Caroline Yazdiya and Victoria Vossman were
featured as senior soloists after band and chorus performances. A
hauntingly beautiful arrangement of The Seal Lullaby was sung by the
chorus,
and Storm
Warning
was
performed
by the
band.

The school newspaper, Cardinal Chronicles, published its largest issue
in May. The newspaper grew from 16 to 28 pages due to the news of our
accomplished students and our patron advertisers. Over 1,000 copies
were distributed on and off campus.
Congratulations to three students who worked on the Cardinal Chronicles
staff for all four years of their high school career: Katy McDaniel (two years
as Editor), Dot Brown (Photography Manager), and Ashley Spence
(Business Manager). Each student received a glass plaque
commemorating four years of service. The Cardinal Chronicles can
be viewed online at bishopsnyder.org, under Publications.

In a turnaround, Adam Thomas (2007), Marketing and Digital Media
Specialist for Perdue Office, came back to campus to teach us how to
effectively use the new equipment and technology. The new media center is
open throughout the day and before and after school for student use.
Lauren Dobrie, Sean Yumul, Madeline Martens and Trey Fenske spent part of
their summer volunteering at Camp I Am Special.
Camp I Am Special
Each summer, Catholic Charities sponsors Camp I Am Special at
Marywood’s Camp St. John for children, teenagers and young adults
challenged by disabilities. This summer 14 Snyder students volunteered as a
“buddy” to campers as they swam, danced, sang, fished, cooked out and
played sports together. Catholic Charities sponsors 238 campers each
summer. BJS alums, Wyatt Gasparac (‘14) and Mary Rose Thompson (‘13),
served on the staff this year. Student helpers from Snyder this year were
Lauren Dobrie, Maurina Downer, Samuel Dulka, Shelby Hugo, Noah-Luke
Kistler, Madeleine Martens, Patrick Martens, Nicholas Martens, Reilly
Spadafora, Mason Tuttle, Maura Webb, Gabriel Wilamowski, Sean Yumul
and Ysabella Yumul.
The Snyder administration, faculty, and staff were pleased to welcome
five babies to the family this year. Jacob and Katie O’Brien welcomed their
second daughter, Mary Maeve, on November 21st. Brendan and Andrea
Bottin welcomed their second child, a girl, Keena Rita, on January 3rd.
Michael and Rachel Fierro welcomed, Gabriel Allen, on January 15th.
Andrew and Allison Cummings welcomed their first child, Martin Steven,
on January 26th. And finally, Carlos and Hannah Gonzalez-Chavez
welcomed their first child, Rafael Giuseppe, on April 22nd.

Mrs. Kathryn Abbruzzese-Browning made a

this summer under the direction of three prominent
Nikon photographers. Following a path set by
famed photographer Ansel Adams, Mrs. Browning
set her tripod in the exact location Adams did,
capturing the Snake River as it winds towards the
Teton Mountains. Her opportunity to work with
Nikon photographers proficient in Photoshop,
business, and technology, will bring more creativity
and knowledge to share with her students.
At the closing Thanksgiving Mass of the
school year, the school celebrated teachers
who have served at Snyder for five or ten
years. Jacob O’Brien (10 years), Rachel
Fierro (10 years), Irene Puleo (10 years) and
Victor Ravelo (5 years) were recognized at
the Mass and received a pin from Deacon
Yazdiya.

Spring Fling
Save the Date! April 9, 2016!
The best thing about the Spring Fling? It’s how much fun everyone has
visiting with new and old friends while supporting BJS.
We couldn’t have such a great event without so many wonderful
sponsors, generous donations from local businesses and individuals, and all
of our guests. THANK YOU! We raised $50,000 which has been earmarked
for the completion of the baseball and softball fields at BJS.
Brian Sexton was wonderful as our Master of Ceremonies and did a great
job keeping the room engaged and energized. Of course, dinner from
Carrabba’s and Kilwin’s ice cream just made for a great night out! We hope
you’ll join us next April, and be sure to thank our sponsors by frequenting
their businesses.

Annual Appeal
Last year, more people than ever answered
the call to donate to the Annual Appeal.
Again, this October you will receive a letter
asking you to consider giving to the Annual
Appeal. Your gift can change the life of a
student by giving him or her an opportunity
for a Catholic education.
Your generosity is recognized no matter the
size of your gift. We value each and every
donor equally, knowing that many of our
parents sacrifice to send their sons and
daughters to BJS. You can use the envelope
found in the middle of the Crosier to make
your gift or visit our website to make a
donation through PayPal.
If you work for a major corporation, your
gift may be eligible for a matching grant,
making your donation even more valuable.
