Poem 15
Snow
It floats down slowly, colouring the bare trees
white. It covers the WORLD in a white sheet. It
covers your garden; it comes to your waist.
Children wake it up like angry mothers,
changing the beautiful white colour to a muddy
brown. The creations still standing with the
remaining snow. This can be a weapon of war,
with ice creating a base.
After a week their enemy Sun melts them away
with it yellow light and all that remains is cold
water.
This weather is snow
The ghost school
WAIT! Don’t go near that school, my dad said it’s full of ghosts.
They have got lesson different from ours, instead of music they learn to
screech and say BOO! They only have another lesson, where they learn to
scare us and wet our pants.
Quick, hide, their coming out. Look how they glide and turn invisible without us
knowing.
I’m warning you never ever go near the ghost school!

The cold sweeps over
The robin stays by it self
People wait for spring
Dolphins are the best
They nicker hello to me
They swim next to me
My things
My car is a snake, taking me to places and the moon and stars.
My doll’s houses are a live, transporting me into their world, but getting me
home for tea.
My pets are magic, they give me advice and kick or bite bullies buts.
My wardrobe is my personal stylist, picking out all my clothes.
My things are alive and I wouldn’t trade them not even for the world.
My world
The trees are my friends, transporting me into my secret world.
My shed is my helper, keeping me out of sight of the mother ship.
My swimming pool is an Olympic swimming ground, as I win gold medals.
My computer is my teacher, helping me with my homework.
My doll’s houses are my second home, helping everyone untill tea.
My paint brushes are artists, directing my hand.
My photos are transporters, reminding me of memories.
My garden is full of life, with new babies being born every day.
I live an adventures life, but I think I’ll go to bed now.

A simple thing
A simple thing like fire can be a blazing fire or a warming comfort.
The simply thing like rain can be a helper of life and a stopper of evil.
The bit more complicated snake can be slippery poison or the Greatest

HOLIDAYS
Holidays mean going to a different place, travel by car ship and
aeroplane,.
Relatives in different places, abroad or connected to land.
A night in for children, night out for adults, pizza and chips, discos and
romantic dinners.
A deserved rest from school and jobs, staying up and sleeping in.
A sunny time on the beach, volleyball and sandcastles, ice cream for
lunch.
But when it is all over there is another one on the way.
Razorsaur
Razorsaur clumbeld out of his cave
Razors bared, saw his prey
His fired szings carried his, as fast as lightning
He lounced on his prey, his caley body cutting them into tiny bits, into the pot
they went
His daily routine was done, now he slumberd back to his cobberly cave, fell
into a slumbly sleep.
By Sioned
Geography lesson
The new teacher put up his new maps.
They hung on the wall for all to see.
He has no wish to wander or sail
Or to see the green leaves on an orange tree.
I think of my old teacher
Deceased but he is free
To smell the sweet scented jasmine
And to touch green leaves burning on an orange tree.
A recipe to care for your dog

Christmas tree
A Star
On the top
Of my head,
Children decorate me
I show that Christmas is here
I see the special man, putting presents under me
I keep the presents safe and sound until morning
I am a special part of this, I love my life
I am admire by all
The Christmas tree stands tall and proud in the corner
Its pine needles smell so strong, yet comforting
When Christmas is over, and all is done
Back to the ground
To grow for another year
She smiles
She smiles when her friends come out
She has her animals, plants and elements
She smiles when a new baby is born
She teaches them to love our planet
She smiles when Summer is here
She sees her flowers bloom and live
She smiles when her birds put on a show
She watches with pleasure as they dance
She smiles when somebody does well
She sees them pick up litter, cleaning her oceans
She smiles when she sees nature in action
She hope they’ll live forever and ever
My family
My mum is a lioness, always at work
Travelling far and wide
My dad is a Welsh Border Collie, looking after us all
Loyal and always there for us
My sister is a cat, curled up sleeping
You can find her in her room, only comes down for meals
I am a dolphin, I’m always swimming
The pool is my second home, especially when it’s warm and sunny
my mum
My mum is AMAZING and I tell her every day.
She is like a lioness, searching for things to
Keep us nice and cosy.
But when she gets home she is like a lovable
Teddy bear hugging me untill she tires.
My mum is AMAZING and i tell her every day.
She is like a nurse, looking after me untill I’m
Better.
But when she is ill she carries on like a brave
Soldier.
My mum is AMAZING but it time for her to rest
Because today is mother’s day so it’s my turn
To look after her.
Analysing
This is the part of the book where there are questions, tables about other
poets’ poems.
Metaphor for a family by
Belinda
Questions
1.) Who is narrating the poem?
2.) What is the poem about?
3.) Why do you think the poet has used metaphors in the poem? To what
effect?
4.) What kind of images and emotions do these metaphors create?
My answers
1.) The person who is narrating the poem is the sister Belinda
2.) The poem is about her family and their personalities
3.) I think the poet has used metaphors because she is trying to help us (the
readers) picture the family, who they are and their place in the family.
4.) The images and emotion the poem creates are: the farther is a large man
able to do things with his hands but is not very good when it comes to
emotional problems.
The mum seems to be always busy, making things neat and tidy.
The brother, David, is the youngest, seems to be quite and keep himself to
himself, not bothered or bothering the family.
The sheep dog is very active and a bundle of energy and looking for attention.
Belinda is very loving and caring, trying to keep the family happy and together.
All together the family seems to work.

pokes and pinches.
Mum is always getting involved in family
business but she is at the centre of the family.

Pigeons by Richard Kell
Questions
Work out what meaning and what effect each of the following lines has (these
are the lines i have chosen):
1.) Small blue busybodies strutting like fat gentlemen with hands clasped
under their swallowtail coats
2.) And, as they stump about, their heads like tiny hammers tap at imaginary
nails.
3.) Summer hangs drugged from sky to earth
4.) Raise a casual hand - With one quick gust they fountain into air.
Answers
1.) Under their swallowtail makes me think of birds with the big chests pacing
the pavement with their wings behind their backs.
2.) Their beaks like the automatic hammers walking on the pavements, tapping
at the ground (looking for food)
3.) Like a hazy summer’s day, like you’re looking at the world through a slightly
unfocused camera
4.) It is like when i go into the garden and if the birds see or hear me coming
they fly into the sky all together.
These are my lines of the pigeon poem
After a hard day’s work
They come together at the water fountain,
To chat and think about the next day’s work ahead
They sleep for a long time and wake up early
Never sure what work holds for them today.
I love me mudder by
Benjamin Zephaniah
Questions
1.) Do you like this poem?
2.) Why?
3.) Why do you think the poet used non-standard English in this poem?
4.) Did you think it was effective?
5.) Why?
Answers
1.) I thought the poem was very good and I enjoyed it.
2.) I like this poem as it has a very good flow and rhythm and is also very sweet
and funny. It also tells a bit of a story and the journey they made together.
3.) I think the poet used non Standard English because he wanted the reader to
know about his West Indian heritage and as part of the poem is about them
leaving their birth place of the West Indies to come to the UK it also gave the
poem a good west Indian rhythm and beat and a lot of warmth.
4.) I do think it was effective.
5.) I think it was effective because it showed that they made a long journey to
get to England, his use of language painted a picture of love and warmth for
each other by repeating of the line “i love me mudder and me mudder love
me”. By the end of the poem you feel that you know the mother and the
strong bond between her and her son while the father seems to be slightly on
the outside of the relationship.
Table for Essay of Poem Pigeons by Richard Kell
Poetic devices
(point)
Quotation (evidence)
What it means why it’s effective
(explanation)
Metaphor
They paddle with staccato feet
in powder pools of sunlight
You can see the pigeons walking in
short abrupt jerking walks, there is
a hazy sunlight.
Personification
Small blue busy bodies, strutting
like fat gentlemen, with hands
clasped under their swallowtail
coats
It is giving the pigeons the traits of
business men, with long strides and
hands behind their backs(or wings
with pigeons , with barrelled bellies,
(big fat bellies)
Simile
Their heads like tiny hammers,
tapping at imaginary nails
Their beaks are like automatic
hammers, pecking at the ground,
with short fast jerky movements.
Metaphor
Summer hangs drugged from
sky to earth.
A hazy sunlight, shafts of light
coming down because of the
pollution, making the atmosphere a
bit foggy as well.
Simile
Only warm dimples of sound,
slide like slow bubbles from the
contented throats
This is saying that the pigeons are
cooing happily and are satisfied
with what they are doing.
Essay-Pigeons
The poem I have chosen to write about is Pigeons by Richard Kell because he
used a range of different devices that i could use in my essay i also liked and
enjoyed the poem.
In this essay i will write about all the different devices that the poet use in the
poem pigeons and what i think they mean.
The first device i noticed was a metaphor in the line “They paddle with
staccato feet in powder pools of sunlight” i like this line as I can imagine the
pigeons walking in short abrupt jerky movements on the pavement, with hazy
sunlight on patches over the pavement, this gives the reader a picture of what
the poet can see but also the picture he wanted to paint of the pigeons.
He then used a different device called Personification in the line “Small blue
busy bodies, strutting like small fat gentlemen, with hands clasped under their
swallowtail coats” I chose this line as I can imagine the pigeons with their wing
tucked in by their sides going down towards their tail being like business men
who are busy and walking with long strides with their hands behind their
backs. The puffed out chest of the pigeon would look like the barrel bellies of
the business men who have had many long business lunches. I felt these lines
gave a clear portrait of what he wanted the reader to know and his use of
language helped the reader with the comparison needed.
The next device i found was a Simile in the line “Their heads like tiny
hammers, tapping at imaginary nails”, again it gives you the ability to think of
how the simile works as you can imagine the pigeons using their beaks to
imitate an automatic hammer whilst they peck at the ground with short jerky
and fast movements.
Then i found another simile in the line “Only warm dimples of sound, slide like
slow bubbles from the contented throats”, when I read this I felt that the
pigeons were content with their lives and I feel that this is what the author of
the poem wanted to describe with his use of language and devices throughout
the poem.
Then i found another metaphor in the line “summer hangs dragged from the
sky to earth” this made me feel of hazy sunlight, foggy hazy days that could be
warm but that could also be like looking through an unfocused camera.
In conclusion i like the poem because the devices used help me to picture a life
of a pigeon through the poet’s eyes. I can picture the poet sitting down on a
city bench watching and studying the pigeons on a very hot summer’s day
comparing them to sights and sounds of the city.
Your Bedroom is a pig-sty
He’s a bookworm
It’s raining cats and dogs
You’re a star
Your hair is a birds nest
He has two left feet
He has a heart of gold
