CAMPUS MINISTRY HIGHLIGHTS
CATHOLIC HEART WORK CAMP 2012
Installation of new flooring
Painting
Eighteen students and four adults participated in the annual Catholic
Heart Work Camp mission trip from June 9-16. This year we went to
Virginia Beach, VA. Our students, working with other youth from across
the country, were involved in several projects. Some groups worked at
the homes of low income or elderly people doing tasks such as
gardening, interior and exterior painting, laying new tile floors, and
repairing fences. Others worked at local Catholic elementary schools
painting, cleaning toys and exercise equipment and gardening while
others worked at a large social service agency with various tasks. At the
end of our work week our students were treated to a day at the beach
where they enjoyed the three mile boardwalk, miniature golf, bike riding
and sitting in the sun (although by Florida standards it was quite
cold). The Santa Fe Catholic community is grateful to the Franciscan
Mission Union in New York City and Br. Tom Cole, OFM for their
generous donation to help with this trip.

MOVERS FOR MOMS WAS AN OVERWHELMING SUCCESS!
The Catholic schools in Polk County: Resurrection Catholic School,
Lakeland; St. Joseph Academy, Lakeland; St. Anthony Catholic School,
Lakeland; St. Joseph Catholic School, Winter Haven; and Santa Fe
Catholic High School, Lakeland, partnered with the local Two Men and
a Truck franchise in an effort to give some Polk County mothers a very
special Mother’s Day. The project “Movers for Moms,” a nationally
sponsored program by the Two Men and a Truck organization is
designed to benefit local moms who are struggling and are in need of
assistance.
Students, faculty and staff members at the local Catholic schools joined
their hearts and hands with Two Men and a Truck and provided a total of
1909 items for moms this Mother’s Day! The estimated value of the items
collected was $6300 in all new items. Some of the items included: 525
shampoos and conditioners, 310 mini toiletries, 260 lotions, 2
strollers, a crib, a high chair, 14 slippers, 20 packs of razors, 20 sets of
sheets, 125 toothbrush/paste sets, 5 cookware sets, 7 spa sets, 13 baby
bottles, 18 sport bottles, and 20 packs of diapers. These necessities and
creature comforts will be donated to moms who are in distress and being
served by the Peace River Center.
Jonathan Crain, franchisee of the local
Two Men and a Truck, summed up the
“Movers for Moms” experience this
year by saying, “This was an overwhelming success! Thank you so much
for making this possible. The biggest
point is that this collection will have an
enormous impact on the women this
shelter serves!”

ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS
SFC NAMES WILDE VOLLEYBALL COACH
We are proud to announce that former
Florida Southern standout Kendall Wilde
has been selected to be the new face of
SFC volleyball. Wilde is a native of
Peachtree City, GA and brings extensive
playing and coaching experience to her
new position. She is a graduate of
McIntosh High School where she was a
four-year performer in volleyball and
tennis and selected team MVP of
McIntosh's 4A state championship team in
2007. In addition Wilde was a three-time
first-team all-area selection and named to
school's academic honor roll all four
years. Following high school she signed
Kendall Wilde
with Florida Southern where she
completed her playing career as a setter for the Mocs and graduated
in 2011 with a degree in Human Movement and Performance with a
minor in Psychology. In addition to her playing successes Wilde has
also served as a coach of Southern Select, a highly successful club
program based out of Central Florida.
“We are thrilled to have Kendall join our staff,” said Athletic
Director Jason Montgomery. “Her playing and coaching experience
will be instrumental in our commitment to take our athletic programs
to the next level.” Wilde succeeds Kyle Moreno who stepped down
following the 2011 season but will stay on as the Hawks cheer coach.
ARANDA TO LEAD
SFC GIRLS SOCCER
We are pleased
to announce that
former boys
assistant soccer
coach Robert
Aranda has been
named the new
head coach of the
Hawks girls
soccer program.
“Robert is a
perfect fit to
continue the
growth of the
program,” said
Robert Aranda
SFC Athletic
Director Jason Montgomery.
Aranda replaced Billy Dickerson
who stepped down to be able to better
focus on the upcoming football
season. Aranda takes over a program
that finished 2011 as district runner-up,
and will return a solid base of young
talent.
MONTGOMERY TO TAKE OVER SFC GIRLS BASKETBALL
Kim Jones resigned her position as head coach of the Hawks
girls basketball program to focus on interests outside of basketball. Jones was instrumental in rebuilding the program at SFC
and led the team to an 11-11 mark in her final campaign. The
school selected Jason Montgomery to be its new head coach.
Montgomery is a veteran of 19 seasons on the bench with 10
of those at the collegiate level. Most recently he took McKeel
Academy to an 18-win season during 2010-11. Prior to McKeel,
Montgomery served stints as head coach at the University of
Virginia – Wise, Volunteer State Community College, Saint
Catharine College and Nature Coast Technical High School.
At each of his stops his programs have found success. He
SFC at FSU summer camp with FSU Head Coach holds the school records for wins in a season at both Volunteer
and 3x ACC Coach of the Year Sue Semrau.
State (27-4) and Nature Coast (26-3) and his one season at
UVA-Wise (16-13) is the program’s only winning season in the
last 15 years. In addition, during his four year tenure as head coach at Nature Coast his team reached the
FHSAA sweet 16 three times. For his success he has been honored a total of 13 times as coach of the year by
his peers and media. Montgomery will enter the 2012-13 season with a career record of 208-114.
“We can’t thank Coach Jones enough for all she has done to build the program at SFC,” said Principal Matt
Franzino. “We hate to lose a coach like Coach Jones but we are also excited about where the program is and the
direction it will be heading.”

DEVELOPMENT NEWS
SPRUCE UP SANTA FE DAY
Paul Hurysz
L-R: Rachel & Maureen Ringley
A special thank-you to Carlos
Alvarez of Sun State Landscaping and the 50-plus
volunteers who helped us
spruce up Santa Fe.
Everyone worked very hard
digging holes for over 400
plants, shoveling rock,
raking, spray-painting the
picnic tables and repairing the
irrigation system. By
purchasing the plants
wholesale and doing the
labor ourselves we saved over
$4,500. Thank you for your
Hawk Pride!
