Hawkhurst Times Your School’ School’s News Summer Term, July, 2015. _________________________________________________________________________ Welcome! In this issue we round off the school year with a picture edition and some examples of work. We hope that you have had a successful year with your learning. Now it’s time for some holiday fun. We would like to remind you of some very sensible tips: Keep yourself SAFE. Use the pavement to walk on, not the road. Ride your bicycle carefully – watch out for that car! You can have FUN in the SUN – but be careful not to burn your skin! Use lotion if you go to the beach or if you are going to be in the sunshine for a long time. I have streets, but no pavement, I have cities, but no buildings, I have forests, but no trees, I have rivers, yet no water... What am I? We should all try to live by these values: REVERENCE: Moses and the Burning Bush. Sometimes it’s fun to be helpful around the house. Can you do a couple of tasks to help? FELLOWSHIP (Koinonia): Feeding of the Five Thousand. FRIENDSHIP: Zacchaeus in the Tree. Take a little time to get ready for the next school year – don’t forget your time tables. The holidays are a good time to read that book, too! FORGIVENESS: The Prodigal Son ENDURANCE: Noah’s Ark A map. If Sam has 4 marbles THE LOST TARANTULA and Jane has 3, how I fell out of my matchbox and when I fell out I fell in an astronaut’s pocket and I went in a rocket. When I got on the moon I floated around the astronaut’s suit and I made a lot of cobwebs around the astronaut’s visor. Then I went back down to earth. I ran to a safe place and started to make a web to catch my dinner. After my dinner I went to Australia and I went to my friend scorpion and we played hide and seek and lots of other games. Then my friend kangaroo came along with my matchbox. I was really excited to have my matchbox again. GEORGE C. many marbles are there altogether? THE LADYBIRD ADVENTURE I fell off my matchbox. I escaped. I felt scared. I had something for tea then I fell asleep. When I woke up I felt scared because there were lots of dinosaurs and then I saw a volcano. So I went in it and it got hotter then I found my matchbox. I nearly got to it, but I got stepped on by a gorilla. BERNICE P. In SCIENCE, Year 1 have been learning about “SIGNS OF SPRING” and how plants grow. 2 7 marbles altogether Oliver R (Y4) out in front with the ball. Mr Heath offering encouragement. Go Hawkhurst! 3 It has been a busy sporting term again. Lacrosse, netball and tag rugby are just a few of the sports on offer. Thanks to Mr Worsfold and Mr Heath for all their encouragement and organization. Lily H (Y4) in action. Cricket team A scores 240 runs. Team B scores 40% more runs. How many do they score? 240 + (24 x 4 = 96) = 336 runs. 3 Years 3 and 4 visited the Living Land Show at Detling. Despite the poor weather, it was a great day, which everyone enjoyed. Mrs Hodsoll has started a cake decorating club. From the looks of things, everyone is enjoying the sweet taste of their efforts! AMY R (Y6) has achieved her piano grade 1 and LUCINDA H (Y5) has achieved her singing grade 1. Congratulations to you both (and also to Mrs Gray)! 4 You may enter, but you can’t come in, I have spaces, but no room, I have keys, but not to open locks. What am I? A computer! The whole school took part in a Giant Walking Bus on the playing field. The Walking Bus promotes healthy exercise through waking to school, as well as awareness of traffic and how to use the pavement safely. Rainbow’s Minibeasts display Start with 10. So what is 10 x 2, plus half as much again, divided by 3? How different is your answer from what you started with? Year 2 Answer = 10 x 2 = 20 + 10 = 30 ÷ 3 = 10. There is no difference. 5 Year 4 crossword showing our school values This is original work. Some slight corrections have been made where necessary. Naturally, they all agreed with me. They helped me reach the top of our box and I made sure the coast was clear then, quick as a flash, I flew out of our box. This was it – I was flying! The sweet girl spotted me, put that other chick back in the box and hugged me as tightly as she dared. I knew I was safer here than anywhere else, so I went to sleep after that exhausting adventure. LUCINDA (Y5) Dear Mice, When I was hanging [around] outside your hole, if you thought I was going to eat you I wasn’t really. I was just saying hello. I have a very boring life. All I do all day is sit at the window and watch the AN ADVERT FOR A TUDOR KING clouds go by. Would you like to come over to my house and have A JOB FOR A KING some cheese and cat food? To be the king you have to be older than 7 years of age, brave and ready for anything. You will have to be strong and persuasive. The king must also be skilful and swift. You will be paid by your people. They will pay taxes that will help the country. You will also have a maximum of 3 days holiday. Your perks include lots of power, a good army, money and to be able to do what you want. You have to be strict to boss your country around if they don’t understand. You have to be well educated, stubborn, clever and able to make big decisions. Please apply to be king! LILY H (Y4) From the Cat. NIAMH K (Y2) BEING A CHICK My name is Wonder-Chick. I love being me. I am the oldest, so naturally I’m in charge and eat most of the food. Oh! We’re being moved to…it says Year 5’s room. I can see a smiling face longing to take me home. She has a plait bigger than me. I’m deciding to show off so that she might pick me up. First, I show off my (starting to get) feathers by spreading my wings out. Secondly, I do the tap dance I did to get out of my cramped egg. After that, I took a bow and sat down, exhausted! Then I saw the most horrible thing! She didn’t pick me up, but picked up another chick! So I chirped to the other chicks, “We have to do something about this. That one is always being picked up. We all want a chance!” If 5 x 9 = 45, what is 45 ÷ 9? Is this an inverse function or not? 6 5. Yes: multiplication is the inverse of division. What are you going to be when you leave school? Year 6 took a break from rehearsing their play to share a careers guidance session with Robertsbridge Career Champions (Year 9 students from Robertsbridge Community College). It was an engaging event and was very useful to inform Year 6 of career possibilities. 7 Year 6 will soon be moving on to their new secondary schools. However, Mrs Tye and Mrs Hamer’s work is not yet finished, as Y6 are rehearsing hard for their forthcoming play, which is all about Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits. We’ll report on that after the holidays. Amy & Alec: The small olympian bear was running a race with the dong with the luminous nose. The fimble fowl came first, with its corkscrew leg. The orient calf came second because Mr and Mrs Canary threw him over the duck, the owl and the frog. The duck, the owl and the frog all lost a race to the golden grouse. The pobble with no toes told the blue baboon to play the flute to the crumpet tree and the mulberry moon. Mr & Mrs Canary wanted to race themselves, but the snail and the bumble bee couldn’t join the race. Eloise & Leo: “The Weird and Whacky Night” Mr & Mrs Canary met up with the snail and the bumble bee. They had tea under the golden grouse tree. The orient calf from the Land of Tute came dancing to the crumpet tree. The pobble with no toes came to the duck, the owl and the frog’s house. The mulberry moon lit the dong’s luminous nose as he travelled to the attery squash court. The biskey bat flew to the blue baboon, who played the flute wearing the quangle wangle’s beaver hat. The fimble fowl with the corkscrew leg squished the stork. The small olympian bear, who won a gold medal, flew to the mulberry moon and planted a stork on top of Mrs Canary’s head.
