KUS Kansas Urological Society Messages from the Presidents I would like to thank everybody for their continued support and participation in Kansas Urological Society (KUS). As a fairly new society, we rely on input and ideas from all our members to allow the society to be an entity from which we can all benefit and be proud of. Association (AUA). He will become President in May. He is also known for his dedication to health policy issues for urologists, including RVU allocation for urological procedures and Medicare reimbursement allocation. He will be discussing issues about financial survival for urologists. We also have a discussion about some common medical problems faced by general urologists, such as chronic pelvic pain and a review of AUA guidelines on medical management of stones. We also have an educational and fun discussion about “Things They Don’t Teach You in Residency,” which will be very helpful for the next generation of urologists that will be attending. Please come and share your experiences with them. The meeting program should be practical and beneficial to all urologists. The Kansas Urological Society strives to keep its members aware of political changes and topics in the state of Kansas and nationally that will affect the way we practice medicine. Our society provides educational opportunities and offers CME credit at our Annual Forum. We also hope to create an atmosphere of camaraderie among all urologists practicing in Kansas. Collaboration among our members will help us as we transition our practices under the new Affordable Care Act and as Meaningful Use criteria from Medicare become fully implemented. As a society, we can present a unified position to help modify upcoming laws and policy changes in medicine as they apply to the practice of urology. Please let me/us know of any health policy issue that you may be encountering. We may potentially be able to approach legislators and combine forces with other provider groups in tackling some of these issues. Similarly, if you already have a relationship with local and/or regional legislators, let us know so that we may help reach out with you on issues that matter to urologists. Remember, this is your state society and we can only tackle issues if we do it together! Thank you for allowing me to serve as the president of the Kansas Urological Society this past year. Together we can continue to grow the organization. I encourage everyone to attend the Annual Forum this spring in Overland Park, Kansas. Please also encourage fellow urologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and staff to attend. I look forward to seeing you soon. Please remember, we need your support to put on CME programs like this and to have a urological voice in our community and state. I look forward to seeing you all in March! Sincerely, Ajay K. Nangia, MBBS, FACS President, Kansas Urological Society Please don’t let a busy work and social schedule lead to apathy in the hopes that someone else will address the problems. We are all in this together to improve the lives of our patients and our practices in an already potentially overwhelming environment. Bladder cancer, renal stones, bladder pain and financial survival are topics of interest for, I daresay, every urologist in Missouri and Kansas. One can attend a lot of meetings on a lot of esoteric topics but if you want the most bang for your CME buck, you ought to attend the 5th Annual Collaborative Forum of KUS/MUA on March 28. Without a doubt, Drs. Moben Mirza and Sameer Siddiqui have organized the best program in the five years of these meetings. Educational activities covering management of non-muscle invading bladder cancer, medical management of stone disease and interstitial cystitis will bring you up-to-date on these entities. On the socioeconomic front, we will be honored with words of wisdom from Dr. William F. Gee, PresidentElect of the American Urological Association, as well as other dynamic speakers. The diversity of topics combined with expert speakers will make this a great one-day meeting to further your urologic education. Come and enjoy a weekend in Kansas City with your colleagues! With our society goals in mind, I extend a warm invitation for you to attend the 5th Annual Collaborative Forum of KUS/Missouri Urological Association (MUA) on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at the Overland Park Marriott in Overland Park, Kansas. The one-day Annual Forum is designed to bring together urologists from the states of Kansas and Missouri to discuss the political issues affecting urologists in their respective states. It is also a time to network with old friends and form new friendships with fellow providers in our field. The meeting is also a great educational opportunity to hear lectures and interact with nationally renowned urologists. I want to extend a big thank you to our program chairs this year, Dr. Moben Mirza from the University of Kansas Medical Center and Dr. Sameer Siddiqui from St. Louis University Medical Center for all their hard work. This year’s Annual Forum has excellent speakers invited to participate. Dr. Yair Lotan, from UT Southwestern in Dallas, will discuss current concepts in the management of non-muscle invasive high risk bladder cancer. We are also honored to have Dr. William F. Gee, who almost needs no introduction to many as current President-Elect of the American Urological Sincerely, James M. Recognize prevention techniques in bladder cancer. 5. Describe current indications for intravesical chemo/ immunotherapy. 6. Recognize IC/PP. 7. Recognize the differences between IC and BPS. 8. Explain treatment options for IC and BPS. 9. Explain the recent AUA guidelines regarding IC/BPS. 10. Describe the indications of medical management of stone disease. 11. Describe the work up and different strategies of medical management of stone disease. 12. Identify gaps in residency education and methods for broadening scope and improving resident readiness for practice. The field of urology is a constantly changing field requiring constant updating of specialists’ information base to adequately provide the best care for their patients. Recent and emerging strategies for managing highrisk bladder cancer, interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and urinary stones are important as these conditions encompass a large proportion of the average urological practice. In addition, urologists must manage the business side of their practices efficiently and in keeping with myriad legal and ethical considerations in order to provide the public with the best in urologic health care. Although many bladder cancers are low risk, high-risk bladder cancer continues to pose a challenge both from treatment and quality of life perspectives. There are many challenges in treating bladder cancer in general. The non-muscle invasive high-grade cancer poses a difficult balance between aggressive treatments and quality of life. Administration of intravesical chemo and immunotherapy remain the treatments of choice advancing to radical surgery. Not much emphasis has been placed on heterogeneity and prevention of these cancers. Accreditation Statement This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American College of Surgeons, the Kansas Urological Society, and the Missouri Urological Association. The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. In conjunction with those thoughts, it has become apparent that a certain proportion of non-muscle invasive cancer is indeed high risk and follows a rapid natural history. Urologists need to become aware of the maintenance treatment of high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, importance of recognizing which cancers have the potential of rapid advancement, as well as prevention. AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ The American College of Surgeons designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The care of patients with interstitial cystitis and bladder pain syndrome (IC/ BPS) continues to pose a great challenge to all urologists. Most urologists have difficulty recognizing and diagnosing IC/BPS. Challenges include diagnostic testing and treatments. In response, the American Urological Association (AUA) has published recent guidelines for diagnosis, treatment and management of patient with IC/BPS. Urologists need to become aware of the signs, symptoms, testing, treatment and also recent guidelines. Urinary stone disease management is another mainstay of urologic practice. Treatment is also minimally invasive but choosing the best technique for an individual stone in an individual patient can be difficult for the urologist. Urologists have become adept surgical treatment of renal stones but need guidance as to the optimal effective medical therapy. American College of Surgeons Division of Education The evolution of the Electronic Medical Records, internet, Affordable Care Act and changing financial landscape of medicine has led to the increased pressures and challenges to the daily life of urologists and their practices. The burgeoning impact has led many physicians and their practices to search for a meaningful ways to adjust and optimize. Urologists need to understand the techniques they can utilize to accomplish this but also be aware of the ramifications of these actions legally and ethically.
