Take a Coastlines - Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce
2 August 2013 | www.fwbchamber.com | The Official Publication of the Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce A Message from the Chair of the Board IMPORTANT PARTNERSHIPS…. The Chamber’s mission is to strengthen local business and enhance the quality of life in our community by providing services which help businesses help themselves. As I tell all new members at our monthly New Member Lunch, this Chamber will give you dozens of Mark Hamrick opportunities to promote your busiOwner, Vacuum Center ness. These opportunities can range from being involved with one of our many events throughout the year or joining one of our over 30 committees, to coming to the First Friday Coffee, Nothing but Networking, Business after Hours, Networking Plus Lunch & Learn, just to name a few. It’s really very simple. You may have the best product or service or even the best price for what you are offering, but if no one knows this, then you will not be successful. Networking with your fellow Chamber members is the most effective way to promote your products or services. So take advantage of your membership and try one or two of the opportunities I mentioned above. You will be glad you did. In the Chamber mission there are six important words: “quality of life in our community.” Most of you have no idea of all the things in which your Chamber is involved. I will admit I sure didn’t until I had the honor of serving as your Chair of the Board. I read in the paper all the time and have people come up to me and say, “Someone needs to do something” about this or that. Some of these issues are waste/storm water run off, economic/business development, taxes and traffic congestion to name a few. Who is that What’s INSIDE Message from the Chair . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 President’s Message . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Sponsor Spotlight - PMI . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 someone? You look around and ask who is doing something -- anything -- about an issue and most of the time you figure it’s no one. You probably don’t realize there is a “someone” working on it. That someone is your Chamber. We have everyone from elected officials to your average citizen come to us for help and direction on a wide range of community issues. We have a reputation for bringing the concerned parties together and getting everyone moving in the right direction for the benefit of the entire community. I can’t tell how many times I’ve heard someone say “if you want to get something done, you need to get the FWB Chamber involved”. We could not accomplish some of the things we have and future issues without great partnerships. I would like to thank the City of FWB for their Chamber partnership. We must work closely with them to insure that our community is headed in the right direction and are preparing for the future. I can tell you that Mayor Mike Anderson, who sits on our Board, and City Manager Michael Beedie are two of the most community-minded individuals I have ever talked to. I thank both of them for their commitment to helping make our community a beautiful, business-friendly area where all citizens can work, play and be proud to live. We look forward to working with them in the future. I will go into more detail on some of the issues listed above in future articles. There is a lot to be done to ensure our community is prepared for the future. There will always be people on both sides of an issue that affects our community, but SOMEONE has to get the conversation stated. Thank you for your Chamber membership and I’ll see you at an upcoming Chamber event. Coastlines is a publication of the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce 34 S.E. Miracle Strip Pkwy. Of course, we know of THE Season—our summer time fun where thousands from around the world visit our community. But what can we do to get more folks down here in December— traditionally the slowest visitor month of the year? Thus A Very Emerald Christmas has been selected by the ad agency -- as the theme for promoting the mid November to New Year’s Day time period here on the Emerald Coast. The TDD’s job is to PROMOTE activities that occur along our coast—not plan them. Therefore, it is OUR job to create the Very Emerald Christmas atmosphere in our community. So what shall we do? Working with the City of Fort Walton Beach Park and Rec Department, the Chamber will assist, as needed, with the Monday, December 2, Christmas parade. That will be followed by the Thursday, December 5, Tree Lighting/Boat Parade fun at the Landing. This year’s theme, “Cookies with Santa,” will include the traditional lighting of the City’s Christmas tree, seasonal entertainment, and the second year Festival of Trees decorating contest and Lighted Boat parade. This year’s parade, sponsored by Helen Back, features a new fun twist—ANYONE who enters a decorated boat in the parade (for which there is no entry fee) will receive a$50 gift certificate to Helen Back. And immediately upon passing the judges’ stand you can take your boat to Helen Back on the Island for a post parade party!! But what else can we do to make our area so festive and merry, that visitors will travel the globe to visit us? That’s where we need your help. Our Chamber will be submitting a calendar of holiday events to the ad agency for promotion on the EmeraldCoastFL.com site. Therefore, please submit all Greater Fort Walton Beach area holiday activities such as plays, concerts, gift shows, etc occurring in our community to [email protected].. (Retail sales and seasonal hours will not be incorporated here—stay tuned for a holiday shopping guide possibility). Do you have any ideas for a holiday special event—or two— that will promote holiday cheer? If you have any ideas, please contact the Chamber and let’s see what we can create. We all hope that this Very Emerald Christmas promotion will continue for many years. Thus, if we don’t have time to make it happen this year—we can start planning for NEXT year!! Hoping you all have a Very Emerald (and Merry!) Christmas!! 3 4 August 2013 | www.fwbchamber.com | The Official Publication of the Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce Spotlight Sponsor: Payroll Management Inc and CEO DC Mickle-Bee and a senior management staff that has been with the company since the 1990’s, Payroll Management Inc continues to grow and evolve to better serve your business. Our members are going to some pretty glamorous places these days – and they’re taking some good reading material right along with them. If you choose to take your Coastlines with you on a trip, take a photo and share it with us. Send it to [email protected]. Looking ahead to how you’ll celebrate Christmas , we hope you’ll spend at least part of it on the water. Start planning now how to decorate your boat for the 2nd Annual FWB Christmas Boat Parade on Thursday, December 5, at The Landing. The event started out last year with a small but dedicated band of holiday sailors – but we’re pretty sure that this year’s group of entries will be larger. How do we know? Consider this: As Ted Corcoran mentioned in his column, “This year’s parade, sponsored by Helen Back, features a new fun twist—ANYONE who enters a decorated boat in the parade (for which there is no entry fee) will receive a $50 gift certificate to Helen Back. And immediately upon passing the judges’ stand you can take your boat to Helen Back on the Island for a post parade party!!” (One gift certificate per vessel.) All boaters are invited to join the parade, which will begin at approximately 5:30 pm. While there is no entry fee, all entrants are required to register their vessels with the FWB Chamber. The registration form will soon be available at the Chamber’s web site at www.fwbchamber.com. In addition, the skippers of all registered vessels must attend a mandatory Skippers’ Meeting at the Chamber offices (34 Miracle Strip Parkway, SE, Fort Walton Beach), date to be announced. This event is sponsored by Helen Back, the City of Fort Walton Beach, the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, and the Fort Walton Sail and Power Squadron. It is but one part of the Christmas festivities at The Landing on December 5, when the City of Fort Walton Beach will sponsor the Christmas Tree Lighting with music and a visit from Santa, and a Festival of Trees. Okaloosa County Tax Collector Announces New BTR Rate Business owners and those seeking to open a business in Okaloosa County will pay one, flat rate for their Business Tax Receipts (BTR) starting July 1, 2013. The Board of County Commissioners adopted a revised ordinance presented by the Okaloosa County Tax Collector’s Office which outlines the cost for a BTR. Formally known as an Occupational License, BTRs are required to conduct business in Okaloosa County. Tax Collector Ben Anderson said, “The previous method of determining the cost had many different tiers, was confusing and even made some businesses purchase multiple BTRs.” The revised ordinance calls for the annual Business Tax Receipt for all businesses located in Okaloosa County to be $35.00. Tax Collector Ben Anderson stated, “We presented the flat rate idea to the County Commission as a way to simplify government and maintain a fair, competitive work environment for all business entrepreneurs.” He continues, “Commissioners agreed and brought forth the long overdue revisions to the business ordinance.” The local Business Tax Receipt is imposed by the Board of County Commissioners for the privilege of doing business in Okaloosa County. Persons who provide merchandise, entertainment, or services to the public, even if only a one-person company or home-based business, must obtain a local Business Tax Receipt before they can conduct business. As I reflect on our great community and its local businesses, I can’t help but highlight the ever-present theme of our willingness to embrace growth in our local economy through business-tobusiness collaboration. We see this every day, in many different industries, as more businesses begin to explore the opportunities of working with each other to improve the overall quality of goods and services in our area. It is this type of attitude that makes me proud to call this area my home. As a Chamber business member, I can tell you from experience that the relationships and benefits we offer to local businesses have been reciprocated. The Fort Walton Beach Chamber has been an unparalleled resource for me when it has come to furthering my practice, as well as building relationships with business leaders throughout the community. From generating sales to combining resources to achieve a common goal, I know that collaboration creates the opportunities companies need in order to reach objectives and meet customer needs. The Chamber helps facilitate these types of fruitful relationships and business practices that encourage growth and economic strength in our local economy, making the Emerald Coast a better place to work and live.
