Winter 2008 - Humane Society of Boulder Valley
Winter 2008 Dear Friends, We enter 2008 with a sense of pride and gratitude. Our 2007 accomplishments exceeded expectations and your support fueled our success. Last year we cared for more than 8,300 homeless animals—an 11% increase from the previous year. Additionally, we increased our adoptions by 26% with a record 4,652 adoptions. What is most amazing is that we achieved an 87% live release rate, representing the animals that come to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley who were placed in new homes or reunited with their guardians. In this issue you will read about Lucy, a dog whose story speaks volumes about the network of compassion you have helped to create for the animals in our care. There were 4,651 other stories just as compelling as hers, with each adoption changing the dynamic of a family. From adoptions, to finding a lost pet, to strengthening the human-animal bond through training, these are the connections between a pet and a guardian that are the cornerstone of our mission. And we are thankful for the connection you have with our organization. Through your support we gladly weave those threads of compassion that strengthen the fabric of this community. We have much planned for 2008. This year you will see a continuation of the initiatives we launched in 2007 around training and behavioral modification. We will continue our medical rehabilitation programs through our shelter medicine program. We will have a special focus on cats, working on a local and national level to address the needs of this important population. We will continue our lifesaving transfer efforts and work within the Metro Denver Shelter Alliance to save more lives through collaboration and partnerships. Our new Humane Education program will provide opportunities for the youth of our community to get involved and informed. These are just a few of the highlights of our vision for the coming year. Our commitment is to be excellent stewards of the resources you provide. To that end, a major initiative will be to best use technology as a basis of communication. Please help us save on postage and printing costs by signing up to receive this newsletter electronically by registering your preference at www.boulderhumane.org/info. Thank you again for all you do for the animals at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. Lisa Pedersen CEO with a little help from our friends by Connie Howard, Director of Operations Lucy had a run of bad luck. She had been hit by a car, severely injuring her rear leg. Her family hoped her leg would heal on its own. After three weeks of Lucy hopping on three legs, they took her to a veterinary clinic to see what was really going on. The diagnosis: Lucy would need major surgery. Since her family couldn’t afford the surgery, they decided to relinquish her to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. (continued on pg 2) In This Issue: Lucy Puttin’ on the Leash 2008 Humane Society Education Training and Behavior Tip Tribute List 1 3 3 4 6 Page 1 This is a story about a dog named Lucy, but really it is a story about a network of friends. With A Little Help From Our Friends (continued from front page) LUCY’S RECOVERY This is where Lucy’s luck took a turn for the better. Our veterinary staff performed the surgery. They concluded that her recovery would be slow with a guarded prognosis. Lucy needed to be closely monitored through rehabilitation because she needed to start to use her leg in order to keep it. To ensure her progress, the staff knew she needed a foster family that would support her recovery process. I was on the top of that list because I’ve often taken in foster dogs that need a little extra care. What’s one more dog when you have four already! She quickly settled in my home and loved the routine of coming to the office every day and the attention from our veterinary technicians during her physical therapy. Though as sweet as could be, Lucy was a stubborn girl and her progress was not what we hoped. The doctors felt she needed more intensive therapy than we could provide. After consultation with Dr. Matt Rooney of Flatiron Veterinary Specialists, the decision was made for Lucy to receive underwater treadmill therapy. This therapy is costly and Lucy would need to attend twice weekly sessions for eight weeks. We contacted the clinic that offers the therapy and found that we had a friend running the program—someone that used to be a volunteer for us. They offered to charge us half their normal fee. The support of our friends continued. My childhood friend, MJ, from Crested Butte spent the night at my home and Lucy worked her magic. MJ told her good friend Adelaide about Lucy, hoping Adelaide would adopt her. Crested Butte did not have the facilities to support Lucy’s rehab so Adelaide had to sadly decline adopting. The photos of Lucy touched Adelaide’s heart so she made a generous contribution to support her care. My running partner and another woman heard Lucy’s story and were so moved that they donated enough money to cover her therapy and medications. As Lucy made progress we could tell that she was ready to find a family of her own. Once again our network of friends stepped in. The morning Lucy entered the adoption center, Lisa Pedersen, our CEO, had a meeting with Lisa Merlino, a friend and colleague. Lisa instantly thought of Lucy for the Merlino family and brought up a photo of Lucy on our adoption website. That afternoon Lisa, Jim, Allison and Maggie came to meet Lucy and fell in love. As the photo below shows, it is possible to live happily ever after, especially when you are surrounded by two sweet little girls. Lucy and I would like to thank: Adelaide Biggs Ann Andrews So to all our friends, you make our work possible, rewarding and just plain fun, thank you! Your compassion makes the work we do at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley possible and saves lives like Lucy’s every day. We are excited to announce that Natalie Senske is now our full-time Humane Education Coordinator. Throughout the year we will be offering youth camps to educate our next generation of pet guardians. Puttin’ on the Leash 2008 This year’s Puttin’ on the Leash Gala event is scheduled for April 19 at the Coors Event Center in Boulder. We understand that this date is in conflict with the first night of Passover and for that we apologize. We want you to know that when this conflict was first brought to our attention, we immediately made every effort to change the date of this year’s event. Unfortunately, because of contractual agreements we were unable to adjust the date. We realize this date will impact many family celebrations and therefore you may not be able to join us. We hope that if you can’t join us this year, we will see you at Puttin’ on the Leash 2009. “I love seeing each child’s face light up when they interact with our many shelter animals,” said Natalie. Children from ages 6 to 11 will have the opportunity to attend a variety of humane education classes that instill kindness, respect and responsibilities for all animals while participating in plenty of hands-on activities. Visit our www.boulderhumane.org to see our upcoming classes or call Natalie at 303-442-4030, ext.613. Now is a great time to check w ith your local city governm ent! by Lindsay Wood Training and Behavior Manager Q: Will I always need food to train my dog? A: When teaching brand new behaviors, it is best to utilize a treat to lure the dog’s body into the appropriate position. This method of luring is essential for quick, accurate training of any new behavior and is much more effective than physically placing your dog into position. Physical placement actually inhibits learning! Think of learning a new dance step or yoga position or the correct body placement for a push-up. We learn by trying the movements and practicing until the motion becomes second nature, right? It would take us much longer to learn the motion if someone else physically placed us in position and then pushed and pulled us into the movements. Your dog will learn much faster if his own muscles learn the position. Therefore, luring builds quick, strong muscle memory in a very efficient manner! As soon as your dog demonstrates his ability to perform the behavior, you will quickly begin phasing out the use of food to lure your dog. At this time, treats will be used only a as reward for good behavior. While it will be important that you intermittently use some high-value reward such as a treat, tennis ball, or opportunities for off-leash time, it will no longer be necessary to reward with a treat for every instance of good behavior. And your relationship will be one of joyful, enthusiastic companionship! They created a holiday giving program to benefit the Humane Society of Boulder Valley that generated more than $8,000. Throughout the year, Superior Liquor customers collected points for their purchases but instead of redeeming them for personal use, many were inspired to donate them knowing that their contributions would be tripled. Every point was matched dollar for dollar by not only Superior Liquor but also Coors Brewing Company and Moet & Chandon. Our deepest thanks goes to all those who participated in the program.
