The Wolverines rebounded after a slow 0 and 2 start out of conference to win their first six conference games beating T.C. Williams and South County during their winning streak. The boys did not get swept by a conference opponent for the first time in Coach Lawrence's tenure as head coach. West Potomac swept both T.C. Williams and Lake Braddock in the conference. Khalil Williams finished the season with 272 points averaging 18 points a game. At T.C. Williams, Khalil went for 34 points in a 76 to 63 victory. Luke Belanger had the second highest point total of the season scoring 27 points versus T.C. Williams in the Wolverdome in a 64 to 50 win. Not only did the team try hard on the court but they proved to be solid students in the classroom and good wolverines within the community. JUNIOR VARSITY The Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team finished with a record of 6-9. All of the team’s losses were extremely competitive and there were plenty of bright spots throughout the season. This was one of the best defensive JV teams around as evidenced by the fact that they were able to hold every single opponent to its season low in points scored. Every player on the team showed great individual improvement, especially Sophomore Jamie Sara, who began the season as a member of the JV team and was able to play his way into a starting role on the varsity team by the end of the season. A couple of signature wins for the team included a hard-fought 47-41 road win at Chantilly early in the season and a thrilling 41-38 come-from-behind win against Lake Braddock in the last game of the year. The JV team was led by Sophomores Robert Iucovetta, Will Prater, and Antoine Grice who all made significant contributions throughout the season. VARSITY The 2013-14 Varsity team enjoyed a season of improvements. The team finished playing at a very high level, making the Regional tournament for the 1st time since the 2009-10 District championship season. The Wolverines team was involved in 4 buzzer beating games, and unfortunately came up short on those, but those type of games helped shape the team for the post season where the Wolverines won the buzzer beating type game in overtime. The Wolverines were led by senior captains, Conrad Jenne, Joseph Richards and Austin Treakle. The Wolverines were represented and recognized by the coaches in the league by having 3 players take all conference honors. WABC WINTER 2013-2014 NEWSLETTER WEST POTOMAC BOYS BASKETBALL Joseph Richards: 2nd team All Patriot conference Demornay Pierson El: Honorable mention all conference Alan Treakle (freshman): Honorable mention all conference Demornay Pierson El: Defensive Player of the Year. The Wolverines started and played some extremely young players in Alan Treakle (9th), Jamie Sara (10th) and Rocky Iboleon (11th). With such youth in the starting lineup, the Wolverines expect to do extremely well next season. West Potomac’s signature games came by sweeping TC Williams for the 1st time in 16 seasons, defeating Mount Vernon at home on cancer awareness night and beating Annandale on the road for the 1st round of the conference tournament. The Wolverines were led by head coach David Houston III, in his 10th season and also in their 10th seasons are assistant coaches David Houston Jr. and Tyrone Strother. Justin Baker rounded out the varsity staff in his 2nd season at West Potomac. The Wolverines post season honors: Dawit Dagnew (12th): Paul Campbell Most Improved Player Jamie Sara (10th): Best Rebounder Demornay Pierson El (12th): Defensive Player of the Year Austin Treakle (12th): Coaches Award Joseph Richards (12th): Most Valuable Player WABC WINTER 2013-2014 NEWSLETTER WEST POTOMAC GIRLS BASKETBALL The Freshman girls were led by team captains Kenza Tatby and Sophie Adler and finished with a record of 7-8. This year’s team improved tremendously throughout the season and finished strong with a win against Lake Braddock HS. Proof of their development can be seen against TC Williams HS. Their first match was met with a lost with the Titans beating the Wolverines 50-36. Their final match was played at West Potomac HS. The girls refused to be defeated once again. With the Wolverine family cheering them on, the freshman girls beat the Titans 44-41. The girls are proud of their accomplishments this season and are anxious to continue to improve their skills for the 2014-2015 school year. Every player showed significant growth and all proved to be a valuable asset to the team. Most notably, Caroline Bowman was the number one scorer for the freshman team and was given this year’s Coaches Award for her dedication, leadership, and academic achievements. The JV girls record of 2 wins and 13 losses did not indicate the level of play our girls displayed on the court throughout the season. There were several games that were close and easily could have gone our way. The girls were asked to bring their best effort and maintain a positive throughout the season. Another goal was to work and improve on the fundamentals of basketball. They achieved both of those goals. Each player made significant improvement over the season. We had 9 out 13 players that maintained a 3.5 or better G.P.A. This is an example of the type of the young ladies and citizens West Potomac High School continues to produce. The Varsity girls enjoyed their best season in a long time finishing with a record of 9 wins and 11 loses with 6 of the loses coming against teams ranked in the Washington Post top 20. The season started fast with 4 consecutive wins which was only the second time in school history the girls had done that. The team was lead by their 3 captains Freshman Maggie McDonald, Sophomore Jessica Dorn and Senior Rosie Sheehan. The team was young with 2 sophomores and a freshman starting all season, and the experience the young core gained should prove to be invaluable in the upcoming seasons. The key to the future is how much time and energy this group puts in out of season. Rosie was selected as the team’s MVP, because of her great work ethic and team spirit. Her hard work in practices and drive in games help set the tone for the rest of the team. Rene Bundy was recognized with the coach’s award. It was an honor to have Rene and Rosie this year, their leadership will be missed. Rosie was also selected honorable mention all district. WABC WINTER 2013-2014 NEWSLETTER WEST POTOMAC GYMNASTICS The West Potomac Gymnastics Team had a very good season finishing with 11-5 record. In the Conference meet we finished 4th.
