Chairman’s Message
It has been another fruitful year for MINDSET in 2014. With continued
strong support from the Jardine Matheson Group companies (the
“Group”), and tireless effort from the Jardine Ambassadors and our
mental health partners, MINDSET remained committed to creating a
greater impact in the area of mental health through new ideas,
initiatives and activities.
The Education team focused on communications within and outside of
the Group with the formation of a dedicated Communications subteam. MINDSET’s corporate video and posters were updated and
distributed to all Human Resource representatives across the Group
for dissemination to Jardine employees in Singapore and used in road
shows to the public. The MINDSET Awareness Drives and MiniMINDSET Days played important roles in reaching out to more
Jardine employees to support MINDSET in promoting mental wellness, and most importantly, to
reduce the stigma attached to mental illnesses. Hopefully they will spread the message to a wider
circle of family members and friends. The team developed a new MINDSET website to reach out to
even more via the internet.
Using its Transitional Employment Model, our Back to Workforce team achieved 16 placements out of
their original target of 10 placements in the last 12 months. This was made possible through the
active support from the Group and the strong partnership from our mental health partners. We have
since 2011 created a total of 31 job placements within the Group. More work-related skills training
workshops and job visits were organised for the clients to increase their employability.
To help our mental health partners’ clients achieve a measure of self-sustainability and to build their
self-confidence, the Social Enterprise team brainstormed with new partners for fresh avenues and
platforms for the clients’ handicraft items to be showcased and sold. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank our supporters for their continual support especially towards our regular events
such as the MINDSET Roadshow at CityLink Mall and Shelf Projects at 7-Eleven outlets. The public’s
growing acceptance of the clients and their work is encouraging.
The MINDSET Challenge 2014, an annual event culminating in a mass run up 33-storey Marina Bay
Financial Centre, Tower 1, was a great success with some S$330,000 raised for the Employment
Training Centre programme of Singapore Anglican Community Services, which uses a structured and
holistic training programme to equip its clients with the relevant skills before placing them out for
employment. A big thank you to all the kind sponsors and donors from our partners, business
associates and the public.
Since the establishment of MINDSET Singapore in 2011, annual pledges and ad hoc contributions
from the Group have allowed MINDSET to channel donations totalling S$1.7 million in support of the
various mental health projects undertaken by our partner organisations under our Fund Allocation
programme. We hope to partner an established mental health organisation in the coming years to
fund a long-term flagship project to make a bigger and more sustained impact in mental health.

Chairman’s Message (continued)
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Jardine Ambassadors for their passion, dedication
and drive which have made our achievements possible. I would also like to express my gratitude
towards the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social and Family Development and our mental health
partners for their unwavering support towards MINDSET. Lastly, a big thank you to the Steering
Committee and various sub-committees, our external advisers; Dr Daniel Fung, Dr Ng Koon Hock and
Jon Button, our auditors and legal advisers, the participating Group companies for their continued
involvement and invaluable contributions, Hong Kong MINDSET, our volunteers, the MINDSET
secretariat, and the many others who have contributed in one way or another towards the growth of
MINDSET.

Vision
MINDSET aims to change people’s attitudes by raising awareness and understanding of
mental health issues, as well as providing direct assistance for individuals, families and
organisations in need of help.
Objectives
MINDSET was established to extend the work of the Group’s Hong Kong registered mental
health charity, MINDSET Limited, to Singapore insofar as such work is in line with the
country’s mental health policy. This will be achieved by raising the awareness and
understanding in Singapore of mental health issues, and by so doing, change attitudes
towards mental health. MINDSET also supports individuals, families and organisations in
Singapore that require assistance in connection with mental health-related matters.

Group;
•

partnership.
In addition, MINDSET also organises Fun Days, which are outings and activities providing
opportunities for clients of mental health organisations to interact with the public, and at the

routine care-giving duties.

Programmes & Activities
Education
The Education team aims to raise awareness of MINDSET’s objectives and to reduce the
stigma attached to mental health issues through talks and campaigns, communication
collaterals, and organising Mini-MINDSET Days.
In 2014, the team worked on editing the MINDSET corporate video, which is used to raise
awareness on mental health issues and MINDSET’s new initiatives. The video was
shortened into concise clips for each MINDSET initiative in order to keep the content fresh
and engaging for audiences.
The Education team also updated the collaterals, including brochures, posters and
developed and designed the MINDSET Singapore website which provides more details of
MINDSET for the public and the Group. The new website is slated to be launched in early
2015.
In addition, the team conducted five MINDSET Awareness Drives this year, through lunch
talks, targeted at employees of the Group. The participating companies included Dairy Farm,
Jardine Cycle & Carriage, Jardine Engineering Corporation, Jardine Lloyd Thompson and
Mandarin Oriental, Singapore. The MINDSET Awareness Drives aim to raise awareness of
MINDSET as well as to promote physical and mental wellness among the Group. Experts
and mental health professionals were also invited to share their insights on mental illnesses,
and how everyone can help reduce the stigma attached to mental illness.
During the year, the team also organised two Mini-MINDSET Days attended by a total of 60
clients from Singapore Association for Mental Health and Singapore Anglican Community
Services and 66 employees of Jardine Cycle & Carriage, Gammon Construction, Jardine
Engineering Corporation and Jardine Shipping Services.
Moving forward, the team plans to combine four major cross-Jardine Matheson MiniMINDSET Days with the awareness drives, as part of its aim to reach out to more Jardine
employees in 2015.
The Education team ended the year with an Appreciation Lunch for the Human Resource
Managers of the Group to thank them for their support throughout the year and to share their
upcoming plans for 2015. The team presented an overview of the different initiatives of
MINDSET and appealed for their support to spread word of MINDSET and to encourage
their colleagues to volunteer for MINDSET events.

Education - Mini-MINDSET Days
As part of the Education team’s activities, Mini-MINDSET Days are organised by the
respective companies in the Group, together with the Jardine Ambassadors to raise
awareness of mental illness and debunk the negative mindsets towards people suffering
from mental illness. Such events create opportunities for the Group employees to mingle and
interact with clients from mental health organisations.
In 2014, a total of 60 clients and employees from three mental health organisations
participated in the events. With the involvement from and interaction with the Group
employees, clients are able to improve their social skills and enhance their self-confidence
while the Group employees are able to empathise and understand people suffering from
mental illness.
Jardine Cycle & Carriage and Gammon Construction – Make Your Own Terrarium
40 employees from Jardine Cycle & Carriage
and Gammon Construction participated in the
Mini-MINDSET Day held at the Horticulture Park
for 30 clients from Singapore Association for
Mental Health. The participants played an
interesting game of Photo-Hunt, followed by an
enjoyable Terrarium workshop where they learnt
to make their own terrarium masterpieces.
Jardine Engineering Corporation and Jardine Shipping Services – Ice Cream Making
Workshop
The three-hour ice cream making workshop was
attended by 26 employees from Jardine
Engineering Corporation and Jardine Shipping
Services, as well as 30 clients from Hougang
Care Centre and Simei Care Centre. The event
was a great success and concluded with a
wonderful lunch and dessert experience from
Udders Ice cream.

Back to the Workforce
The Back to the Workforce team aims to promote social and community acceptance through
reintegration and to source for appropriate job openings and work training placements within
the Group.
The team created 16 placements in 2014 with the active support of the Group and strong
partnership from our mental health partners. Using the Transitional Employment Model
developed in 2012, these clients were placed on short-term employment within the Group for
periods of six to nine months to increase their employability in the open job market. The
companies that provided job placements in 2014 included Dairy Farm, Jardine Lloyd
Thompson, Mandarin Oriental, Singapore, Jardine Engineering Corporation and MCL Land
(with the support of TPS Construction).
Besides job placements, the team also organised training workshops to equip clients with
necessary skills. In 2014, one of our Jardine Ambassadors, Ang Woon Jiun, who is the
Learning and Development Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Singapore, trained the clients and
prepared them for job interviews. Topics covered included researching on the company,
grooming standards, questions to ask and how to answer potential interview questions. The
two-hour workshop also included videos of interviews, discussions and practical writing of
resumes in different formats. The Do’s and Don’ts were key takeaways for clients and the
trainer shared some HR insights which were very well received. The Interview Skills
workshop closed on a high note with role-play involving the clients putting into practice what
they had learnt. Another workshop, on Resume Writing, was organised towards the end of
the year for another 10 clients already under placement within Jardine business units. The
objective of these training workshops was to impart the relevant knowledge, skills and
attitude so that they may craft reasonably-presented resumes for external job applications
following their stints within the Group.
A Microsoft Office Training Workshop was also included under the team’s initiative to have
external qualified trainers conduct skills training for clients. The workshop was held at an
external IT skills training provider, with a total of 16 clients participating. It is hoped that with
the new knowledge obtained, clients will be more proficient to take on administrative duties
at work.

Back to the Workforce
Job site visits at Dairy Farm were also organised to educate clients and better prepare them
on what the actual working environment would be like.
The job site visits prepared clients mentally for the working society by showing them the
actual working environment they may encounter. MINDSET hopes that with the pre-training
and training opportunities and job stint in Jardine business units, clients will be able to seek
permanent employment in the open job market.
In 2015, the Back to the Workforce team plans to increase the number of placements under
the Transitional Employment Model. Clients under this programme will be sent to attend
Workforce Skills Qualifications training to increase their skills and employability. The team
plans to organise more skills training workshops for clients in various mental health
organisations.

clients to understand the actual working environment.

Social Enterprise
The Social Enterprise team aims to assist mental health partners’ clients achieve selfsustainability through profit-generating business activities. The year was packed with events,
starting with the successful shelf projects and annual MINDSET Roadshow.
In collaboration with Simei Care Centre, the Mother’s Day Shelf Project was launched in
nine 7-Eleven stores islandwide, while the Valentine’s Day Shelf Project had handicrafts sold
in 15 7-Eleven stores islandwide. Each Shelf Project lasted an average of three weeks, and
all proceeds went to over 45 clients and their families.
The annual MINDSET Roadshow at CityLink Mall took place in early June 2014, and
benefitted clients from Singapore Anglican Community Services and Singapore Association
of Mental Health. The roadshow was an overall success as it attracted members of the
public to learn and understand more about MINDSET, the partnering agencies and mental
illness. The team also built a backdrop for the shoppers to write notes of encouragement for
the clients. A total of more than 450 shoppers visited the booths, and saw a significant
number of penned words of encouragement and support for persons suffering from mental
illness. The words of encouragement were collated by the Jardine Ambassadors and sent to
the partnering organisations for them to disseminate to their clients. The feedback received
from clients was heartening with many of them feeling and appreciating the warmth and
concern from the general public. Most importantly, this initiative allowed them to feel a strong
sense of pride and achievement, as they are able to secure an independent source of
income, albeit small, for themselves and their families.
The MINDSET Roadshow at CityLink Mall attracts shoppers to the booth and leave a note of encouragement to
those suffering from mental illness.

Social Enterprise
The Social Enterprise team took part in the Nanyang Technological University’s Freshmen
Week roadshows in August 2014 with the booths manned by the university’s school clubs
and external vendors. This was the second time MINDSET participated in the event. Two
booths were rented for Singapore Association of Mental Health and Club HEAL respectively
to generate awareness on mental health and spread the word to the younger generation.
The clients were also allowed to sell their beautifully handcrafted products and accessories.
The booths which were located in prominent locations led to greatly improved sales, as well
as increased the interaction between the agencies and the students.
Before the year ended, the Social Enterprise team collaborated with the Fund Raising team
yet again to invite mental health organisations to set up sales and display booths at The
MINDSET Challenge 2014.
In 2015, the team plans to organise two MINDSET Kiosks in heartland malls, one MINDSET
Roadshow at CityLink Mall, five Shelf Projects, sales and display booths at University
Freshmen Orientation Week and Polytechnic Freshmen Orientation Week and at The
MINDSET Challenge 2015.
The NUS Freshmen Week welcomes MINDSET to raise awareness on mental health with the students in
the campus.

Fund Raising
The Fund Raising team aims to raise funds through community and corporate engagement
and partnership.
The Fund Raising team handles organises The MINDSET Challenge on an annual basis.
Not only does the team have to work on promoting awareness on mental health, it also
raises funds for a selected project of a local mental health organisation.
The MINDSET Challenge 2014, a race up 33 levels of the building with individual and relay
format, was held at Marina Bay Financial Centre, Tower One in November 2014. This year
saw the introduction of the Kids’ Dash category, where the little ones between 7-12 years of
age walked or climbed up 11 levels accompanied by their parents.
MINDSET adopted Singapore Anglican Community Services (SACS) as the beneficiary for
The MINDSET Challenge 2014. A total of S$332,870 raised by The MINDSET Challenge
2014 went towards the running of the Employment Training Centre Programme for clients of
SACS. This programme was designed to complement and fill the gap of SACS’ Employment
Support Services, using a structured and holistic training framework to equip its client with
relevant skills, before they are placed out for employment.

Fund Raising
The event attracted over 500 attendees, including 225 participants from all race categories
(individual male, individual female and team relay). Besides the race participants, the
supporters at the ground level were also enthusiastic in their efforts to win the “Best Dressed
Team” and the “Best Ra-Ra Team” competitions while cheering their colleagues on.
The author of “A Philosopher’s Madness”, Ms Chan Lishan, shared her past experiences of
dealing with her own mental illness, and urged the public to be receptive towards clients in
the same plight. Audiences were also treated to an entertaining dance performance by the
staff and members of SACS.
The Guest-of-Honour, Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Health, Ministry of
Manpower and Deputy Government Whip, gave a moving speech on how everyone can play
a part in reducing the stigma attached to mental illness, and community integration. This was
followed by the flag-off of the mass walk-up, led by MINDSET Chairman, Mr Alex
Newbigging, and accompanied by the Group’s management.
MINDSET’s Fund Allocation Sub-Committee will be selecting another beneficiary for The
MINDSET Challenge 2015 and raise awareness of MINDSET and mental illness.

Fun Days
Fun Days are outings and activities organised by the Jardine Ambassadors for clients of
mental health organisations. Aside from giving the clients’ caregivers a break, Fun Days also
aim to enhance the emotional well-being of the clients by giving them the opportunity to
interact with the public and for the Jardine Ambassadors to gain a better understanding of
the different challenges and needs of the clients.
In 2014, four Fun Days were held for clients from O’Joy Care Services, Silver Ribbon
(Singapore), Institute of Mental Health and Singapore Association for Mental Health
respectively. A total of 182 clients and employees from the four mental health organisations
participated in the Fun Days.
A Walk in the Clouds
90 clients and caregivers from O’Joy Care
Services were treated to an interesting visit
to the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay,
accompanied by 30 Jardine Ambassadors,
Steering Committee members and other
volunteers.
They visited the Cloud Forest, which had
beautiful scenic views. A sumptuous lunch
was also served at Majestic Bay Seafood
Restaurant. As this was the first time most clients visited Gardens by the Bay, they enjoyed
themselves thoroughly and were extremely delighted by the unique experience.
Downtown Getaway
Held at Aranda Country Club, the second Fun
Day hosted 28 clients, their caregivers and
employees from Silver Ribbon (Singapore), who
were served a delectable buffet spread to start the
day, followed by exciting indoor games organised
by 14 Jardine Ambassadors to get clients warmed
up. Clients were also were brought to the nearby
Pasir Ris Park, where they played with balls,
blindfolds, and engaged in a unique water parade.

fish and goats.
Cooking with Class at Cookyn Inc
The last Fun Day for 2014 ended on a delicious
note, as 34 clients, caregivers and employees
from the Singapore Association for Mental Health
went to Cookyn Inc to learn how to make their
own pizzas and tiramisu dessert. Clients were
first given a short demonstration by the staff from
Cookyn Inc to familiarise themselves with the
procedures before the hands-on session.
Participants were split into four groups before
being given the necessary ingredients, and then
they proceeded to create their own pizza and tiramisu, closely following instructions from
Cookyn Inc staff. After the meal was prepared, participants had the opportunity to savour
their own creations.

Fund Allocation
The purpose of MINDSET’s Fund Allocation Sub-Committee is to assist the Steering
Committee in the evaluation of sponsorship and donation requests received from
organisations registered in Singapore that may or may not have Institutions of Public
Character status, with objectives similar to MINDSET.
MINDSET receives contributions from the Group companies to run its activities. Funds from
the Group companies are also pooled and contributed directly by them to the selected
charitable organisations, alongside any funds raised through the community, corporate
engagements and partnerships and public fund raising by MINDSET. This enables sponsors
to receive tax deduction benefits, where available.
In 2014, MINDSET committed a total amount of S$700,000 in support of two projects,
comprising S$500,000 for the initial two years of Creative Mindset Hub by Singapore
Association for Mental Health in 2015 and 2016, and S$200,000 in 2015 to the Raintree
Sanctuary @ Punggol Wellness Centre by Silver Ribbon (Singapore), in the third year of
support. The projects are as follows:
Creative Mindset Hub - Singapore Association for Mental Health
The programme aims to set up a holistic integrated centre in a more centralised location for
easy access. The centre aims to promote integrated services to reduce stigma and enhance
acceptance of people with mental illness in the community by utilising visual and
performance arts, i.e. art, music or dance as forms of expressive therapy through enhancing
emotions, cognitive abilities, motor skills and body movement. The centre also targets to
promote supportive network through therapeutic endeavours for both individual and groups,
while providing education and training in mental health.
Raintree Sanctuary @ Punggol Wellnes Centre – Silver Ribbon (Singapore)
The project aims to combat the stigma associated with mental health and encourage
treatment by renovating an allocated unit at Block 550 Hougang Street 51 into a Mental
Wellness Outreach Centre for the purposes of educating the public on the importance of
mental health and equipping them with basic mental health knowledge through training and
outreach events. The centre also provides complimentary counselling services to residents
with mental health issues as well as their caregivers.
