CDA68030 A French Baroque Diva Arias for Marie Fel Carolyn Sampson Ex Cathedra, Jeffrey Skidmore A welcome return of Carolyn Sampson and Ex Cathedra to Hyperion, performing the rich, fulsome music of the French Baroque. Their recording of love songs from Rameau’s operas (Hyperion CDA67447) was hugely acclaimed for Sampson’s stylish, fluid, seductive performances, and ten years later her artistry is even more dazzling. CDA68035 Philippe de MONTE, Jean GUYOT, Jacobus VAET, Jacob REGNART Amorosi pensieri Songs for the Habsburg Court Cinquecento A new departure for the wonderful all-male vocal ensemble Cinquecento. They turn to the secular music— generally much less well-known—of the Renaissance masters Philippe de Monte, Jacobus Vaet and Jacob Regnart whose sacred music they have explored so successfully in previous recordings for Hyperion. Also included are six chansons by Jean Guyot de Châtelet. This collection is both historically fascinating and stunningly performed. CDA68053 Pyotr TCHAIKOVSKY Les saisons Op. 37b Six morceaux Op. 19 Pavel Kolesnikov Pavel Kolesnikov became Laureate of the Honens Prize for Piano in 2012 and gave his Wigmore Hall debut at the beginning of 2013. In his five-star review for The Daily Telegraph, John Allison praised the Russian-born, London-based artist for his recital’s ‘intelligent programming and outstanding pianism … one of the most memorable of such occasions London has witnessed’. CDA68028 Arthur BENJAMIN Violin Sonatina, Viola Sonata Lawrence Power Simon Crawford-Phillips CDA67969 Lawrence Power is Britain’s greatest living viola player, the true successor to Lionel Tertis and William Primrose. Part of his mission is to perform and record music premiered by those masters of the previous century, including works by York Bowen, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Dale, William Walton and, here, Arthur Benjamin. The simplicity and strength of his artistic vision, intended to reach the widest audience possible, is clear in A Mortuis Resurgere, a work here receiving its premiere recording. CHSA 5138 J.S. JUNE 2014 ABRD 9902 3 Jean SIBELIUS Lemminkäinen Suite Op. 22; The Wood-Nymph Op. 15 Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä The source of the Lemminkäinen Suite is the Finnish national epic Kalevala, and its four movements tell of the adventures of the young hero Lamminkäinen. In penetrating and beautiful prose, Hardy tells a moving tale of unrequited love and the thwarted happiness of our heroine. The Waves traces the lives of six friends from childhood to old age. It was written when Virginia Woolf was at the NA0172 height of her experimental powers, and she allows each character to tell their own story through powerful, poetic monologues.
