In Focus: Milton Photographic Club
Milton Photographic Club held
their fourth annual exhibition at
the village fayre in July.
This included pictures from all parts
of the world, but many depicted
Milton and the local area. In
addition, a number of images were
from the practical photography
evenings held by the club during the
year. This year we photographed the
Cambridge Christmas lights, and
then returned to capture the city in
May. Another session featured
photography using polarised light
and we also held a portrait evening at
a local professional studio. A
selection of the images displayed at
the exhibition is shown on page 5.
As well as practical evenings, the
club’s programme features talks by
Starling Cherry Picking Photographer: Gerry Metcalfe members and invited speakers, and
"show and tell" sessions, where we
exhibit and discuss photographs we have taken. The club
meets on the third Wednesday of each month in the church

Following the successful introduction of the new blue bin service, South
Cambridgeshire District Council has been looking at new ways to extend
the range of materials that residents can recycle.
Compared with materials accepted in the blue bin (e.g. card and plastic
bottles), you may find that you don't have items such as unwanted textiles or
old CD's on a regular basis. Even if you only throw away a small amount of
textiles or books it makes a big difference if you choose to take them to a
recycling bank. Your local recycling area provides an easy and convenient
way to recycle these items.
Textiles and shoe recycling bank
In South Cambs we hope to reduce the amount of textiles and shoes sent to
landfill. Residents living in Milton can use the local recycling bank in
Tesco's supermarket car park to conveniently recycle a wide range of items
such as: clean and dry clothing, shoes, bags, belts, towels, blankets, duvet
covers, pillows, sheets, curtains, fabric.
Unwanted clothing and shoes are often perfectly wearable and can be used
again, providing affordable and much needed clothing for others. Items
which are not reusable, such as fabric and worn out clothing, can still be
placed in the bank for recycling; just make sure they're clean and dry.
Cotton can be turned into rags for wiping and polishing. Car insulation and
stuffing can be made from knits and woollen materials. And other materials
find their use in a variety of other ways, such as building materials,
reprocessed upholstery fibres, and home insulation.
Media recycling bank
From time to time every household may have old videos or books they no
longer need or want and wonder if they can be recycled. The answer is now
yes, with the new media bank at Tesco's accepting the following items:
books, CDs, DVDs, video tapes, cassettes, computer games.
Items that cannot be used again can still be placed in the media bank and
will be separated from reusable items. Books unsuitable for reuse are
pulped and made back into paper. Plastic from CDs, DVDs, cassettes and
video tape is granulated into pellets and made into new items such as
buckets, trays and stationery items.

Milton Community Minibus
Helping Hedgehogs
For hire to non-profit community and
voluntary groups
Hedgehogs are popular nocturnal spiky mammals which do live in Milton. If
you wish to help them and ensure you get them in your garden, what do they
like: ways to get in and out of yours and your neighbours' gardens so they
can roam afar collecting food; occasional gaps of two or three inches at the
bottom of fences and gates should be sufficient; undergrowth and piles of
leaf litter or compost where they can sleep during the day, during the whole
of the winter and be able to find food. They eat invertebrates of all kinds,
including the dreaded slug! They are partial to cat or dog food, wet or dry,
if you want to put out some extra food and hopefully get a sighting, but
make sure the local cat population can't get at it first! They like lots of fresh
water too.

holes of golf at Girton Golf Club on
Monday 1st August in aid of Breast
Cancer Care.
All went really well and we teed off
at 4:50 am. The weather could not
have been better, our caddies and
s u p p o r t o n t h e d ay w a s
overwhelming and helped us to
complete 101 holes in just 12
hours. In fact we were even
thinking of playing on to complete
6 rounds of golf as we were on a
real high with no tiredness, aches or
pains.
We are so grateful to all who
sponsored us, as it helped us to
raise over £3,100 for Breast Cancer
Care. Thank you all so much.

Scrabble
What do they dislike: rat poison, slug pellets and strimmers are all lethal to
hedgehogs. Also bonfires which are lit without checking that a hedgehog
hasn't decided it's a perfect home for daytime sleeping or winter-long
hibernation. They don't like daylight; a sighting of one in broad daylight is
likely to be a sighting of a sick or disturbed hog. They really hate fast cars
when it's getting dark early at this time of year and they're trying to get out
and about to find food so they can get fat enough to hibernate safely.
Driving slowly and carefully won't only allow you to stop safely for a
hedgehog crossing the road, but will make Milton a quieter and safer place
for us all.

Getting Messy
Do you enjoy getting messy? Lots of people at the Village Fayre did. In All
Saints’ gazebo, parents and children fished with magnets, hunted for fruit,
decorated straws, made flowers, won prizes and generally had fun. Why?

It’s a bit early to be thinking about
Christmas, but rehearsals for this year’s
Carols by Candlelight choir will be
starting in early November. We always

From the Desk of the Parish Council Chairman
September 2011: First of all, I would like to welcome our five new parish councillors: David Chamberlin, Jim
Mowatt, Michael Perkins, Ian Tyes and Mandy Winnington. I look forward to working with them and all our
returning councillors in the time ahead. Four of our new councillors joined Vice Chairman Ian May, District and
parish councillor Hazel Smith and me on a village bike tour in June. They were surprised to learn just how extensive
the boundaries of Milton are and received a new appreciation for all that the parish council is responsible for
throughout the village.
No doubt you will have noticed that the red phone kiosk on Coles Road is now fully operational again after recent
vandalism. Thanks to the Clerk’s Office for liaising with BT to sort this out. I’d also like to thank Paul Capitain and
the band of volunteers who helped install the seat around the horse chestnut tree on Ely Road opposite Symbian.
On advice from South Cambs District Council, the parish council has formed a working party to consider an
Emergency Plan for the village. Such a plan would identify local risk assessments, skills and resources, contact
points and emergency centres in the event of an emergency.
Your parish council continues negotiations to purchase College of West
Anglia land adjacent to Ely Road opposite the college campus. We are
liaising with the Football Association and have engaged a turf consultant to
conduct a feasibility study of the proposed recreation area. We are also
developing a business plan which will be necessary for applying for grants
and loans. Once all the major issues have been sorted out, we intend to meet
with the village as a whole, including the allotment holders, to discuss the
matter in more detail.
I would like to call your attention to two short articles in this issue of the
village magazine. One calls for volunteers to help with winter gritting in the
village and the other is an invitation for youth-related clubs and organisations
in the village to submit proposals to take advantage of the generous monetary
donation provided by a resident from Butt Lane. If you feel that you are able
to make a contribution to the welfare of the village, I encourage you to
consider supporting our Community Care scheme. You can find out more

Finally, at the time of going to press, I received the resignation of Gerda
Covell, who has been on the parish council for over four years. I would like

Volunteers Sought For
Winter Gritting
During the last two severe winters,
Cambridgeshire County Council
(CCC) has received help from
many parish councils and local
farmers. They want to build on this
support to be prepared for the
coming winter. To that end, they
have set up a new programme for
parishioners themselves to get
involved in winter gritting. CCC
will provide salt and machinery and
parishioners provide the labour.
CCC has agreed to take on
insurance liability as long as the
parishioners undergo a training
course. But volunteers are needed
to get this new programme off the
ground as well as someone to
coordinate the effort. If you are

Youth Clubs Encouraged
to Apply for Special Fund

used for the benefit of the youth in the
village.
The parish council is asking for youthrelated clubs and organisations in the
village to submit bids for a share of
this generous gift. Clubs and
organisations should submit one A4
size page with:
(1) a brief description of their club/
activity;
(2) an amount of money they would
like to bid for;
(3) what specifically the money
would be used for;
(4) the number of youth in the
village who would benefit from
their proposal; and
(5) contact information (phone
number/email).

Emergency Volunteers Required
Milton has been asked to produce an Emergency Plan to list the resources the village can expect to call on in case of
an extreme emergency. We may for example be asked by the police to coordinate rescue or evacuation activity in the
village, in case they are swamped by issues across the area, until they can take over. We'd like to make a list of key
people and their phone numbers - if you would like to volunteer or to come onto a steering group to develop the plan,
please contact the Parish Clerk on 861447 or (preferably) email [email protected] to let us
know your contact details and what you might be able to offer us. We want to produce a list of trained first-aiders,
medical professionals, people with 4x4 vehicles, chainsaws, tractors, etc, catering teams, organisers and so on.
Plus if you have a skill or experience of dealing with real emergency situations that you would like to share with us,
then we would like to hear from you.

Community Centre News
Some of you will have noticed that earlier in the summer the climbing net
'disappeared' from Coles Road recreation ground. Unfortunately, after 10
years of heavy use, it was worn out and had become dangerous. However,
we have been successful with our grant application to the Big Lottery Fund
and a replacement net should be installed by the end of September, enabling
the children of Milton to once again test their climbing skills whilst their
parents look on with bated breath!
Maintenance projects that have recently been completed include renewing
the patio slabs at the side of the building and replacing the gutters and down
pipes on the Annexe. After 20 years, the lights on the netball/tennis courts
and the 5-a-side court have just about reached the end of their lifespan and
should be replaced during September.
Saturday night bookings have been rather quiet through the summer,
although we did host a wedding reception in early September, when the
bride and groom chose to hire the internal marquee. This proved to be a
massive success, totally transforming the appearance of the main hall.

Message from PCSO John Mason
Well summer 2011 is almost over and locally it has been fairly quiet, unlike
elsewhere in the country, where events that I am sure you are all well aware
of led to many of us working 12-hour days and having our rest days
cancelled. This was to cover for officers who were sent to other areas to
assist. Your local PC Shulver found himself being regularly sent down to
London to assist the Metropolitan Police.
As I say it has been relatively quiet for the summer months and I am glad to
say we have not seen too much antisocial behaviour.
The type of incident that we have seen, and I would like to bring to your
attention, is that of Rogue trading. We have had reports of possible rogue
traders calling on residents in the local villages. These traders especially
target elderly and vulnerable people, offering to carry out work that is
usually not required. If you agree to the work they generally charge an
excessive amount and produce poor results.
It is not advisable to agree to have work done when you are put on the spot
and have not carried out any research into your options. Age UK have a very
useful website which contains very good advice for all of us. Their web
address is www.ageuk.org.uk. You can also call and speak to Age UK on
01223 221921 or 01354 696677; they are very helpful and can provide a list
of traders which have been vetted.
Please be aware that there are people prepared to carry out this type of crime
and particularly target the elderly and vulnerable. If you have neighbours or
family who may be possible victims, please make them aware and if you see
anything suspicious please take note of any vehicle’s details, including reg
numbers, and descriptions of persons involved and you can inform us on the
non-emergency number 0345 4564564.

LEISURE
Milton W.I.
The summer is now over but as usual the Members of Milton W.I. have been enjoying themselves. On the 5th July
we all went on a lovely day out to the Chilterns in Buckinghamshire. We picked up our guide at ‘The Hit and Miss’
pub where we had coffee and then went on a most informative tour around the area and marvelled at the size of all
the properties and could only guess at the values; this included Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country retreat. Then
it was back to the pub for a most enjoyable lunch. After that we visited ‘Jordans’, a Quaker Meeting House, which
was built in 1688. This was the Quaker Meeting House that William Penn, the famous Quaker associated with
Pennsylvania in the U.S.A., attended. All arranged by Carol Jones; very many thanks Carol.
We had Sally Kingman come to our May meeting to demonstrate her ribbon work and to give us a deep insight in to
the history of how ribbon has been used over the centuries. Sally is a very lively and humorous speaker and had us all
in fits of laughter.
At our next meeting in June the speaker was Andy Malcolm, who is the Regional Organiser for ‘The Fisherman’s
Mission’, which is a charity to help working and retired fisherman and their families. This charity was founded in the
1880s by Ebenezer Mader and gives financial, practical and pastoral care to the fishermen and their families. A
fisherman's life is a very hard one and also very dangerous, especially in bad weather. Andy, who has a very good
voice, also sang a couple of sea shanties.
In July we had Vic Botterill, a retired policeman, talking on ‘Psychology and Responsibility’. He outlined a scenario
of murder and intrigue, then we all had to name the murderer and also to decide who was responsible for the murder.
The evening was a lot of fun but also it outlined just how serious police work can be. The evening ended with
strawberries and punch (non alcoholic).
Once again our darts team won the Federation cup. Very well done to them; all the practise at the Waggon and
Horses pub on Tuesday nights paid off. We still go on our lunches and
walks. What we eat we must walk off to keep fit.

In September some of us are going to the theatre in London to see ‘Petticoats
and dreamboats’. Some of us went to the Southwold summer theatre in
August to see a Ray Cooney farce. Absolutely hilarious. We have good
speakers booked for the coming months thanks to Judy Milner and her team.
Also there are many events being organised by our County Federation, some
of which are open to non-members.
Any ladies who would like to know more about us please come along to any
of our meetings as a visitor. We meet at the Church Hall on the third
Tuesday in the month at 7.30p.m. (except the months of July and December
when it is the second Tuesday)… You are all very welcome. Please contact

The Nick Lock Cup and the BBQ afterwards were completed in relatively
dry weather on the first Sunday in September, won by Carol Cox and
Barrie Crick, cups presented by Sylvia Lock. Lucy Williams took over
organising the Ladies Ladder with Carol Cox winning the first round.
Several intra club matches have been played with Nadal’s Nachos just
beating Federer’s Fellows 5-4 in the last match! Information about the
