A
s anticipated, 2013 was a productive year in terms of
both the Foundation’s annual fundraising program
and the detailed planning that is necessary for the
hospital expansion project.
The Foundation’s foremost concern remains to provide
ongoing support to the hospital through our annual
program’s fundraising initiatives. Our 2013 Signature
Events were well-attended and surpassed the projected
fundraising goals, thanks to significant community
participation. We are also grateful for the generous
response we received to our Spring and Holiday appeals to
donors and Milton residents.
While keeping our annual
program strong, the
Foundation is also involved
in planning for the expansion
of the hospital. With the
August 2011 approval of an
expansion, the government
recognized the need for our
local hospital to keep pace
with the astronomical growth
the
community
has
experienced.
During the past year planning has moved forward at a
steady pace at the foundation as well as at the hospital’s
redevelopment office, headed by Al Coady, Executive
Director for the Milton Redevelopment. Says Janet
Skupsky, Chief Operating Officer of Milton District
Hospital: “After the submission of the Functional Program
in December 2012, the redevelopment team launched
into the next stage of planning and design with the
development of the Schematic Illustrative Design.
Once the planning, design and compliance aspects were
completed, HHS and Infrastructure Ontario issued a
Request For Qualifications (RFQ), which coincided with the
unveiling of the Official Redevelopment Sign on
September 4th, 2013 attended by Deb Matthews, Minister
of Health and Long-Term Care.
Over the next few months we are looking forward to the
development and release of the Request for Proposal
(RFP) to pre-qualified bidders in March 2014. The contract
will be awarded to the successful bidder approximately
one year later followed by the start of construction. As
well, community members will be invited to participate in a
series of Focus Groups in early 2014, to provide feedback
on their hospital experience and help shape and inform
the MDH expansion.”
The redevelopment signs on both Derry Road and Bronte
Street publicly confirm the provincial government’s
commitment to see the Milton District Hospital expansion
through. Our local government has long supported the
hospital expansion and on
October 28th Milton Town
Council voted in favour of a
contribution of $35 million to
the Hospital’s Local Share
Plan, moving the project one
step closer to reality.
The financial commitment
from the Town is an
important component of the
Hospital’s Local Share Plan,
which is the portion of the
project’s costs that are not
funded by the provincial government. The Local Share
Plan must be submitted to the Ministry of Health and
Long-Term Care for approval before HHS and
Infrastructure Ontario release the Request for Proposals
(RFP) for the project.
Both Janet Skupsky and I are pleased to be able to report
that planning for the expansion project is on track. We like
to share with you the latest architectural representation of
what the expanded hospital may look like when
completed. At this point this is only an interpretation of the
concept and further modifications are to be expected.
Needless to say, whether we are discussing our annual
fundraising program or the hospital’s expansion, you, our
donors, are at the forefront of our efforts in support of
Milton District Hospital. We can never thank you enough
for all that you do to keep our hospital strong today and in
the future!

MDH Staff’s Efficiency and Compassion attract
Support from Family Foundation
M
ilton District Hospital became the subject of the
Audrey S. Hellyer Charitable Foundation’s generosity
through a combination of circumstances that happened to
Kaitlin Hellyer’s family in February of 2012.
emergency and ended up at the MDH emergency room, this
time requiring treatment himself. Again, the efficiency and
caring attitude of the staff made a positive impression on the
couple.
Katie, her husband Chris Sitko and infant son Aiden Sitko,
were settling in as new residents of Milton when Aiden got
very sick. The family rushed him to Milton District Hospital for
emergency treatment, glad that a community hospital close
to home was available to take him to. It turned out that an
underlying infection had caused a sudden high fever,
resulting in a febrile seizure. Katie and Chris were impressed
with the staff: their quick action to deal with Aiden’s
condition and their
supportive
and
compassionate manner
towards them as the
concerned parents.
At this point they felt that they were thoroughly introduced to
Milton District Hospital! In fact, Katie decided that the
hospital would be a wonderful fit for the Audrey S. Hellyer
Charitable Foundation. She made a proposal that ultimately
resulted in a $25,000 donation to Milton District Hospital
Foundation, in support of the hospital.
In Katie’s own words: “The efficiency, compassion and
courtesy we encountered at Milton District Hospital
motivated us to advocate for a significant donation to help
support the hospital expansion and ensure that the hospital
continues to have the resources to meet the needs of the
community.”
The family is doing fine, now well settled into the community
and following with interest the developments that will
eventually culminate in the opening of an expanded hospital
facility in Milton.
As if that wasn’t enough,
not long afterwards Chris

Royal Canadian Legion: Setting the Pace
T
he Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Branch #136 holds an
impressive record as a major donor to the Milton
District Hospital Foundation (MDHF). Their name is
recognized under the Pacesetter category—$100,000 $249,999—on our donor wall in the main entrance of the
hospital.
The past year was no exception to their involvement with, and
generosity towards, the hospital through their support of
MDHF. A delegation of the RCL attended our Donor
Appreciation Evening which was held on June 26, 2013 at
the Milton Centre for the Arts in conjunction with our Annual
General Meeting.
Several speakers made a passionate appeal for the worthy
cause that our community hospital continues to be, both with
respect to its role in the day-to-day provision of healthcare in
Milton and the planned expansion of the hospital. Kathleen
Blane, Chair of the Poppy Fund, and part of the RCL
delegation that attended the event, took a proposal to the
local RCL Command to donate $10,000 to MDHF. The
donation, which was designated for the purchase of a Glovo
Medical Lift, was approved and a cheque was presented to
Brian Penman and Anne
Ondercin of MDHF, at the RCL
meeting on October 9th, 2013.
We would like to say THANK
YOU and pay special tribute to
this impressive service club
that faithfully supports local
veterans and several other
deserving Milton organizations. Our board and staff feel
fortunate that our Foundation continues to be a recipient of
the Royal Canadian Legion’s generosity towards the
purchase of new and replacement medical equipment for
Milton District Hospital.
Black & White Pajama Party: FUNdraising for MDHF
T
he second annual Black-and-White PJ Party was
everything one would hope for in a women-only event.
The theme brought out the collective creative genius in the
attendees. From frilly to fabulous,
silky polka dots to lumber jack
flannel, country chic to animal
prints—all styles were represented,
topped by colourful boas as a
finishing touch.
What makes it so special is that all
this was done to raise over $12,000
for the Milton District Hospital Foundation; specifically
towards the purchase of X-Care software for the CT Scanner,
to reduce exposure of dose-sensitive organs.
Event organizers Tiffany Budler from Teatro Conference &
Event Centre and Marg Saliba, together with the PJ Party
committee, are to be congratulated on the tremendous
success of the evening. Their tireless efforts and the flawless
execution of Teatro staff on the event night combined to
make a wonderful event that some have coined as
unforgettable.

Helen Vatistas: Report on Annual Giving
E
veryone who is acquainted with the Milton District Hospital Foundation knows
that our single mandate, our raison d’être if you will, is to raise funds in
support of Milton District Hospital’s medical equipment priorities. Government
funding for new and replacement equipment is limited and the hospital’s equipment
needs far exceed these resources. That’s where the foundation comes in.
Funds are raised through various initiatives:
∗
Our signature events which include the Annual Gift of Health Gala in May; the
MDHF Classic Golf Tournament in September; the Indulge Food and Wine
tasting in September and the annual Breakfast with Santa event in November
∗
∗
∗
Spring and Holiday appeals for support to donors and Milton residents

Monthly Donor Program
Community Partner events, graciously organized and promoted by Milton
residents and organizations
Sponsorships by corporations and organizations in support of MDHF
To be specific, in 2013 funds were raised towards the purchase of a portable X-Ray
machine, five new hospital beds, 5 flexible cytoscopes and 4 laparoscopic sets for
the operating room as well as other essential medical equipment on the hospital’s
annual priority list.
All of these efforts are only as successful as the generous response from the many
loyal individuals and organizations in our Milton community. Ultimately it is your
participation—and your willingness to lend support—that enables our hospital to
continue providing healthcare with excellence and compassion and plan for the
future with confidence.
