The Muckenthaler Cultural Center
Our Speaker of the morning was Zoot Velasco from the
Muckenthaler Cultural Center. Zoot has been an entertainer,
starting at the age of twelve. He organizes, produces, does commercials but his passion is teaching those we don’t normally think
of as entertainers. He is active in the Rotary in Fullerton.
The Muckenthaler Culture Center is located on West Malvern
in Fullerton and many of us have driven by the building up on the
hill without knowing much about it. Zoot’s job as marketing director is to change this. He began by finding that most people
can’t spell the name so as to look it up on the Internet. He
changed all this by turning to some Cal State Fullerton students
who shortened it to the “ Muck”. He took on the chore of raising
$650,000 so as to support the 80 events put on by the Center.
He said their mission is to be the cultural center for North Orange County. T hey were just recognized as the best non-profit
identity in Fullerton. They have been classified as a Historical
Site. The Center is named for Harold and Shirley Muckenthaler
who donated their 18 room villa on eight acres to the City of Fullerton in 1965.
The Center provides a myriad of events. Zoot went through them
with a power point display. There are after school programs,
adult programs, older adult programs. Scattered among the classifications are ceramics, Hip-Hop, Theater, Visual Arts, Music
and voice. There is Native American Pottery and Pun Jung Pottery; in the Older Adults there are tai chi, and quilting.
The Gallery presentations vary with the month such as May being
the Art of the Automobile, June the Student exhibition and July
the Sister City.
The theater features six Jazz concerts, and you can bring your
own food and drink, ala the Hollywood Bowl. They call theirs
the Fullerton “ Cup.” There are classical series, story tellers and
poetry readers. There is a Cabaret series and entertainers with a
Fullerton connection. There are three festivals planned on the
second Sunday of each month. There is a Mother’s Day brunch
at 2PM and a tea at four. There will be Big Band entertainment.
There is a Holiday Fest planned for the Christmas season.
There is a Farm Dinner for members only. All in all the Muck is
a very active place and we thank Zoot for this look at a nearby
treasure.
