President’s Message

Our synagogue is filled with young families who fill our Early Childhood Center and Religious School.
We have always tried to cater programming to these families and make them part of our Beth El family.
However, an issue that synagogues have dealt with for years is how to keep families involved whose children have gone away to college and left to start their own lives. A few months ago, I had a discussion with a
few of our Past Presidents about their thoughts on this matter. One of them followed up with an email as to
why “empty nesters” continue to belong to Beth El.
Their children were educated and had their bar/bas mitzvah at Beth El
Their children or they themselves were married at Beth or a grandchild was named here.
Our klay kodesh have been mentors and confidants. It has been an environment where we can be
consoled and where we can reflect on our lives.
We have so many pleasurable memories that we want to maintain the synagogue for others.
We want to return the generosity of the congregants who were there with open arms to welcome them
40+ years ago.
I am sure there are other reasons that many of you have, but this Past President’s main reason he continues to support
Beth El is that Beth El is OUR HOME and how can we not be a part of it.
I am proud that our synagogue has developed a myriad of exciting new programming for empty nesters, such as our newly
rejuvenated adult choir and we are committed to be a congregation that supports the needs of all our congregants.

time Rabbi Dorff will continue the conversation on issues
raised during the sermon. Again, the conversation will
be geared to adults and older teens, but we will have
programming for younger children elsewhere in the building during Rabbi Dorff’s session. In keeping with our
theme of thanking our past leadership as a run up to the
Annual Meeting, we will be honoring the Past Presidents
of Sisterhood and Men’s Club at our Shabbat morning
service.
Finally, on Sunday morning, Rabbi Dorff will be speaking
at a Men’s Club Breakfast. He will be discussing his
book, “For the Love of God and People: A Philosophy of
Jewish Law”. A group of about 35 congregants have
been studying this book, chapter by chapter with me on
Sunday mornings at previous Men’s Club breakfasts and
this session will be a fitting conclusion to that three
month process. Still, you don’t have to have read the
book, attended previous sessions, or be a member of
Men’s Club to come to this program.
It is my hope that you will take advantage of the many
opportunities for study with Rabbi Dorff during his visit.
Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend. We
are a congregation of learners, dedicated to pushing forward in our Jewish intellectual growth and this Scholar in
Residence Weekend is a chance for all of us to reaffirm
our commitment to ourselves, our synagogue, our Gd
and our People.

Our Scholar In Residence Weekend
Will Be Enlightening
It has been several years since Beth El
has had a Scholar In Residence Weekend
and I am very excited about our upcoming
opportunity to learn with the brilliant rabbi,
Elliot Dorff. Rabbi Dorff is among the leading scholars of the Conservative Movement
and is the chair of the Committee of Law and Standards
which helps shape our Movement’s policies and practices.
The theme of the weekend is “The 21st Century Synagogue:
A Center of Jewish Learning and Personal Growth” and it will
culminate at our Beth El Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 29,
2012. We are bringing in Rabbi Dorff to both educate our
congregants as well as the larger community of which we are
a part. We want as many people as possible to benefit from
what this outstanding scholar has to offer. Let me tell you
what we have in store:
On Thursday night April 26, 2012, at 7:00PM Rabbi Dorff
will be leading a panel discussion entitled, “Death and Dying:
Ethical Issues in Clinical Care.” This event is for health care
professionals as well as the community and congregation at
large. It is being co-sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and we will be offering
continuing medical education credit through them as well
continuing education credits for social workers through JFCS
and for nurses through Virtua Hospital. Ten thousand brochure invitations are being sent by Penn to health care providers throughout the Delaware Valley. That night, three
challenging cases will be presented to Rabbi Dorff, Dr. David
Casarett of Penn’s Center for Bioethics, as well Dr. Ed Viner,
professor of medicine at Cooper Hospital. Each will respond
from their own unique perspective and I am sure all who attend will gain new insight into an issue that, sooner or later,
effects every family. The program is free and as mentioned,
open to the

A new title which the JEA introduced to recognize
certain select educators for attaining a standard of
achievement in the field of Conservative Jewish education. The goal of this new certification is to recognize those elite educators who have achieved the
highest professional standards of our organization,
as a mark of honor and to encourage ongoing professional development among our colleagues.
Individuals must have advanced formal education, at
least 5 years of administrative experience, a demonstrated commitment to Conservative Jewish education, contributions to the field such as curriculum or
program development, projects and/or continued
academic learning.
After a successful WWW -- the Phil Podell Memorial World Wide
Wrap, our annual T'fillin get together and a robust Purim Shalach
Manot operation, it's time to reward ourselves. We are going to
have a free paid membership event on Wednesday, March 21, in
the Social Hall. We'll dine on Chinese-style delicacies from the
Cherry Grill and watch a movie, "Jews In Baseball," narrated by
Dustin Hoffman. The dinner and movie is free for Club members,
but you must let us know you're coming, so we'll know how much
food to order. The deadline is Friday, March 16. Watch for more
details, (start time, etc.) in the Beth El Buzz.
This will prepare us for our annual Men's Club Shabbat
on (Saturday, of course) April 14, the last day of Passover this year. As we do every year, your Men's Club
will be running parts of the service in the sanctuary and
serving a kosher-for-Passover lunch after the service in
the Social Hall. There are still a few spots left on the service
agenda - hurry up and contact Ray Katz ([email protected])
to learn what's available. We will also announce the
new Men's Club slate of officers and President, starting their two-years' term on May first. If you want to
serve on the new Men's Club board, contact past
president Gary Shapiro ([email protected].)
We wish you all a Zissen Pesach -- a Sweet Passover holiday.
Let's retell, for the umpteenth time, the story of the redemption of
our ancestors from their toils in ancient Egypt, on this 3,324th

Young Families Group Chair
Shalom! My name is Shari Shapiro and I am chairing
Beth El’s new Young Families Group (YFG). YFG’s mission is to create opportunities for community building, socializing, learning and fun among families at Beth El with
pre-Bar/Bat mitzvah-age children. As a fairly
new member to the shul, I am so excited to be
taking on this position and to be working with
Rabbi Arnow to create amazing experiences for my family
and all the other young families here at Beth El.
We are in the process of putting together a board and already have some programs planned for the spring:

Congregation Beth El is again providing Tzedakah Boxes
to our Gimmel class along with their Siddurim. This is the fifth
year that our children get a first hand experience in personal
giving which we hope will continue throughout
their lives. The children are encouraged to drop
coins into the box until filled. It will be their
decision as to what charity they will support.

Consecration Class have funded this tradition. This year the

Abilities Awareness Shabbat - March 3
Voorhees Township's Third Annual Abilities Awareness Week
will take place March 3 - 10 and once again Beth El will participate. Abilities Awareness Week is designated by the Township, Voorhees schools and other civic and religious groups to
celebrate the achievements of the disabled in our community
and to create an understanding and acceptance of children and
adults with special needs. This is indeed the philosophy of
Congregation Beth El, where differences are celebrated.
Thanks to Linda Harowitz, a member of SPEAK (Special needs
Parents Educators And Kids), who brought this to our attention
last year. Beth El will commemorate that week with an inclusive Abilities Awareness Shabbat featuring our very own Project Lev and faculty.
Our Hebrew High School will include a special program on
special needs Tuesday evening, March 6
Our third Graders will receive their first siddur from thanks to
Beth El’s Men’s Club and Sisterhood. The evening will commence with a beautifully catered dinner, at 5:45PM, organized
by a wonderful committee, chaired by Suzanne Levy and Jen
Swarbrick. Approximately 7:00PM, the children will be helping
Hazzan Pomerantz-Boro lead the Kabbalat Shabbat Service,
via a special cantata written by Yaffa Fuchs and directed by our
teachers, Marsha Axler and Tamar Barkan Shamir.
In December our families participated in the Siddur Cover
Family B’Yachad Program. Our children and parents had an
opportunity to study about the siddur and make a unique siddur
cover to protect their new siddur. The results are beautiful and
will be on display the two weeks prior to Consecration in the
school corridor. A yasher koach to all our children and parents
who have done such a wonderful job with the project.

in honor of their children.

1st Graders & their parents will enjoy ‘traveling’ through the
Four Questions as they learn about Pesach in a fun &
interactive way. They will learn to chant the Ma Nishtana,
act out the story of Pesach, create attractive & useful art
projects & prepare some Passover delicacies. Each station

About Hanukah

Hanukah means rededication. It also is the
festival of lights. The bright lights of the candles remind them of the Jews’ fight to worship
God in their own way.
The story of Hanukah begins more than two
thousand years ago in the land of Judea. At
the time Antiochus of Syria wanted the Jewish
people to pray to the Greek gods as he did.
He decided to punish the Jewish people. Antiochus said they would be put to death unless
they gave up their Jewish religion.
Judah and his followers were called the Maccabees. The Hebrew word Maccabee means
“hammer”, in English. Hebrew is the language
of the Jews. The army destroyed many statues of the Greek gods in the Temple. They
carefully made the Temple a house of prayer
to one God again. When the Temple was
ready the Jews celebrated their victory and
the rededication of the Temple for eight days.

News from the Early Childhood Center
(winner of the Solomon Schechter Gold Award)
Learning Outside the Classroom
When you say school, most of us automatically think…classroom. But the truth is that children learn in all sorts of settings and
in many ways. For example, when they are in the playground, children are learning about balance, heights, safety, socializing,
spatial relationships, etc.
Field trips serve as another avenue of learning. Over the past few months, many trips outside the building have been enjoyed by
the students.
The 3 year olds went to the Ritz Theatre to see a presentation of “Pinocchio”. Not only did they enjoy the story, but they got
to experience a bus ride, how to behave in a theater and that not every story is interpreted the same way by different groups.
In February, the Kindergarten and Kindergarten Enrichment classes went to the Academy of Natural Sciences as part of their
unit on Dinosaurs. They had a lesson about dinosaurs and went on the Big Dig.
Irvine Auditorium was the site of the 4 year olds class trip to see “Henry and Mudge” as presented by Theaterworks Players.
And, in March the Kindergarten will go to the Walnut Street Theater to see “Miss Nelson”. The children are now beginning to try
acting in the classroom and are making their own costumes to fit the part. Literature, acting, make believe, representation, etc.,
are all part of the learning taking place.
All of these experiences are wonderful opportunities. However, don’t get the wrong idea: learning takes place in the classroom
too, so we will continue to have classes at the Early Childhood Center for now!

Amy Kaplan - Congregation Librarian
A Jewish woman named Hedwig Kiesler, working with the
American composer George Antheil, received a patent in 1942
for a “secret communication system”. The inventors had developed “spread-spectrum radio”. This technology enabled enhanced communication between aircraft and ships, led to jamproof targeting of torpedoes and paved the way
for the development of GPS and cell phones.
This was a remarkable achievement for anyone,
but Hedwig Kiesler was not just anyone. She was
a film star known as the most beautiful woman in
the world. Her stage name: Hedy Lamarr.
How Hedy Lamarr came to be the co-inventor of
such important technology is the subject of Richard Rhodes’
Hedy’s Folly: The Life and Breakthrough Inventions of Hedy
Lamarr, the Most Beautiful Woman in the World. Rhodes
describes young Hedwig’s privileged life in Vienna, where she
married a fabulously wealthy Austrian arms dealer. Hedwig
carefully observed dinner-table conversations about weapons
technology, and she brought this knowledge with her to America. Antheil was a composer with considerable experience in the
technology of player pianos. Their collaboration brought together two creative, highly intelligent people.
Rhodes’ book is not a Hollywood tell-all (though there are plenty
of details about Hedy’s marriages and movie career, including
her first film, the scandalous Ecstasy). Instead, Rhodes stays
focused on the groundbreaking work she did with Antheil. It is a
fitting tribute to the glamorous film star who was more interested
in inventing than in looking beautiful and who famously said “any
girl can look glamorous: all you have to do is stand still and look
stupid.”

On our “New Fiction” shelves:
The House at Tyneford by Natasha Solomons is
the story of a young Viennese girl whose life in
1938’s turned upside-down by the approaching war.
She ends up a parlor maid in England. This is a
love story, richly evocative of life in an English
country house. Readers will find themselves
thoroughly engaged by this story.
In Susan Sherman’s The Little Russian, we also
read about a young woman whose comfortable life changes
radically. Berta Alshonsky finds herself working as a grocer’s
daughter in a small Jewish town in early 20th C. Russia, far from
the opulence she enjoyed in Moscow as a child.
Berta falls in love and marries a wheat merchant,
with whom she once again lives a comfortable life
only to learn that her husband is a member of the
Jewish Worker’s League and has been smuggling
arms to shtetls so they can defend themselves
against pogroms. When he gets into trouble he
must leave the country, but Berta makes the disastrous choice to stay behind, keeping the children with her. This family saga is outstanding historical fiction,
highly praised by critics who call it “mesmerizing” and
“extraordinary.”

Due to the publishing schedule of the Bulletin,
all Gifts & memorials are not published in the
month they are sent out.
Each Shabbat morning a congregant stands at the Shabbat
entrance to our building to welcome people as they arrive.
These arrivals may be old friends, they may be attending a
simcha or they may be "synagogue shopping."
The Greeter's responsibility is to welcome people
cordially, wish them a "Shabbat Shalom" (if appropriate),
direct them to the sanctuary, the coat room, etc., or offer
other assistance as needed. She/he will be stationed at
the entrance from 9:15am until 10:35am. At that time the
greeter may join the rest of the congregation (if they wish).
A Beth El Board member is usually assigned for a specific
Shabbat, but we often need substitutes. For further information or to volunteer, you may email or phone Mort Kanovsky at [email protected] or 856.424.9372.

All Kippas are welcome regardless
of a memorable name or date.
