Song of Celebration - Redeemer Presbyterian Church
Explanation of Installations Baptismal Fount It’s Easter morning!! We remember that God made a pathway for us and remember how we are new!! The baptismal fount installation begins at the top, where God has sent his cleansing water to us from heaven, to cover us with life from our heads to our feet and then run out over the basin into the world to connect us. It is healing water, filled with miracle sparkle and soft kindnesses and love. The fabric colour reminds us of the waters crossed in order to share the gospel and the overall shape reminds us that each of us is really a temple that has the Spirit inside, no matter where we are or what we are doing. We are so covered and look beautiful to our God!! If you look inside the fount basin, the base of the installation is actually an old advent wreath, another reminder of Christmas. However, there are stones around each of the candle holders, reminiscent of the stones God had the Israelites pile up to remind them of good things God had done for them (because their memories were as bad as mine is). Our salvation is the best thing God could do for us ever, and I wanted to build a reminder from the ground up to heaven, just as He pours water from above to cover me. It’s a relationship that could be one-sided if He felt like it, but that’s just not our Dad’s personality. ~~~Elyce Elder The Red Cross We have gone from December’s joys into a time of waiting and remembering. We have been walking on a pathway towards the horrors and hope of the cross. The red sideshow flags, which hailed the small babe at Christmastime, show themselves again to herald the ultimate love of our King. The beginning of his life and the end of it...which ended up to really not be the end of the story. We anxiously wait for all things to be made new again on Sunday morning. ~~~ Elyce Elder, Evelyn Allee, Marcia Jones Easter Banners by Marcia Jones The banners are pennants repurposed from our Advent celebration. Welcome Call to Worship based on Psalm 103 Leader Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. People Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will. Leader Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. All Praise the LORD, my soul. 1 Opening Hymn “All Hail the Power” All All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name, Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown him Lord of all; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown him Lord of all! Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race, Ye ransomed from the fall, Hail him who saves you by his grace, And crown him Lord of all; Hail him who saves you by his grace, And crown him Lord of all! Let ev’ry kindred, ev’ry tribe, On this terrestrial ball, To him, all majesty ascribe, And crown him Lord of all; To him, all majesty ascribe, And crown him Lord of all! O that with yonder sacred throng, We at his feet may fall; We’ll join the everlasting song, And crown him Lord of all; We’ll join the everlasting song, And crown him Lord of all! words Edward Perronet, 1779-1780; vs. 4 John Rippon, 1787; music Oliver Holden, 1793; Public Domain Prayer of Adoration 2 Prayer of Confession Leader Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Word of God, and the Interpreter of God’s Word. You have taught us that human life is ordained by God, His gift. That we are to respect its boundary, honor and respect His image in people, treasure and protect their life, and earnestly seek reconciliation where there is need. People All But we have murderous hearts. We do not respect human life as your ordination and gift, nor do we treasure people as image bearers. But we passively store up anger in our heart, or respond to people in our anger. We cast contempt on people with our words, and despise them in our hearts. We misname people, calling them names, gossiping about them, and tearing down their character. We enjoy sitting above people as their judges, but in doing so we fall under your Judgment. Lord Jesus, Show us the seeds of murder in our hearts. Convict us of how we tear down people you have made. Break our hearts with the evil of our sin. Help us confess that we are murderers. Our only hope is in your reconciling work. Forgive us of our sin. Have mercy on us. Assurance of Pardon in the Gospel based on Romans 4:7 Leader If you have confessed your sins in Jesus’ name, they are forgiven. Hear the good news of the Kingdom of God. Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin. 3 Song of Thanksgiving “Come Ye Sinners” All Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, Weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus, ready, stands to save you, Full of pity, love, and power. Come ye thirsty, come, and welcome, God’s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Lost and ruined by the fall; If you tarry ’til you’re better, You will never come at all. Let not conscience make you linger, Nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness he requireth Is to feel your need of him. I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in his arms; In the arms of my dear savior, O, there are ten thousand charms. In the arms of my dear savior, O, there are ten thousand charms. words Joseph Hart, 1835; music RESTORATION, trad American Melody Walker’s Southern Harmony, 1835 4 Song of Thanksgiving “‘Tis So Sweet To Trust in Jesus” All ’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, and to take him at his Word; Just to rest upon his promise, and to know, “Thus says the Lord!” Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! O how sweet to trust in Jesus, just to trust his cleansing blood; And in simple faith to plunge me, ’neath the healing, cleansing flood! Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease; Just from Jesus simply taking, life and rest, and joy and peace. Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! I’m so glad I learned to trust thee, precious Jesus, Savior, Friend; And I know that thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end. Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! words Louisa M. R. Stead, 1882; music William J. Kirkpatrick Prayer of Devotion Offering of Gifts and Service At this time in the service we offer children’s worship for ages 4 years through 1st grade. Children are invited to gather on the front pew with children’s worship leaders. First time visitors are welcome! Parents, please escort your child if this is their first time to come. Children are also welcome to remain with their parents throughout the service. 5 Offertory “Jesus, Keep Me” Ensemble Dear Jesus, will you bring me close, Your Spirit send, your love to show, Oh keep me by your side, For I so easily depart, Drawn by my oft deceitful heart, To wander far and wide, Oh keep me by your side. Jesus, keep me, Jesus, keep me, Firmly fix me, In your love, In your love. Dear Jesus, will you keep me safe, My eyes fixed ever on your face, And your love make more real. For troubles face me on all sides, My hopes beset by angry tides. They seek my joy to steal, But your love is more real. Jesus, keep me, Jesus, keep me, Firmly fix me, In your love, In your love. Jesus, when I am tossed about, By evil found within, without, My fearful heart you still. Your love will change my will. Jesus, keep me, Jesus, keep me, Firmly fix me, In your love, In your love. Rebekah Osborn, 2015 6 Scripture Matthew 5:21-26 Reader “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. 21 Congregational Response Reader This is the Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Sermon Jason Dorsey Jesus and our Murderous Hearts 7 8 9 10 Community Group Questions 1. What is Jesus’ interpretation of the command “you shall not murder?” How does this reveal your murderous heart? 2. How does Jesus’ interpretation of this command create an existential crisis in your life? How does Jesus reconcile this crisis? 3. The law of God is a whip to drive us to Christ, a picture of the beauty of Christ (and our beauty in Him), and a path for us to walk. In what areas of your life are convicted and committed to altering your behavior? Pray for each other. Children’s Question: Think of a time you got mad at your brother, sister or parent. Can you see how that itty-bitty seed of anger could become a big plant that would want to hurt them? Call to Communion and Prayer Guidelines for the Reception of Communion Redeemer welcomes all Christians who are willing to forsake their sin and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation and who are members of congregations which proclaim the gospel to receive Communion with us. We will be coming forward for the distribution of Communion. Please eat the bread privately, and then drink the cup together with us after everyone has returned to their seats. Clear cups (located in the interior rings) contain grape juice. Red cups (exterior ring of tray) contain wine. Children who have been examined by the elders and admitted to the Lord’s Table are able to partake of Communion. Ministry of Prayer The ministry of prayer is one of the ways we live together as a community of believers and seekers. During Communion, members of our prayer team are available at the front of the sanctuary. It would be our privilege to pray with you as we walk together through the joys and struggles of life. We also encourage you to pray with one another in the pews during this time of movement in our service. Prayers Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. 11 Song of Celebration “Our Sufficiency is of God” Ensemble O Lord, with shame I do confess My universal emptiness, My poverty and pride; I cannot keep thee in my sight, Nor can I think one thought aright, Unless thy Spirit guide. Unless thy Spirit guide. I cannot from my idols part, Nor love the Lord with all my heart, Nor can myself deny; I cannot pray, and feel thee near, Nor can I sing with heavenly cheer, Unless the Lord be nigh. Unless the Lord be nigh. So let this mighty Jesus be, An all-sufficient help for me, Creating power and will; Thy grace sufficed the saints of old; It made them strong and made them bold, And it suffices still. And it suffices still. Lyrics John Berridge, 1838, Music Rebekah Osborn, 2013 12 Song of Celebration “Weak and Helpless, Yet Believing” Ensemble O my Savior, I am weary! Let my cry to Thee ascend While in humble supplication Now before Thy throne I bend! Weak and helpless, yet believing, casting all my care on Thee, I am hoping, trusting, praying; have compassion, Lord, on me! O my Savior, tho’ unworthy, I have nowhere else to go; Thou canst pardon my transgressions, Thou canst wash me white as snow! Weak and helpless, yet believing, casting all my care on Thee, I am hoping, trusting, praying; have compassion, Lord, on me! O my Savior, by Thy Spirit Thou hast called me o’er and o’er; Now repentant I am coming; Lord, my wand’ring soul restore! Weak and helpless, yet believing, casting all my care on Thee, I am hoping, trusting, praying; have compassion, Lord, on me! O my Savior, do not leave me Here to perish at Thy throne; In Thy tender, loving mercy Cleanse and make me all Thine own! Weak and helpless, yet believing, casting all my care on Thee, I am hoping, trusting, praying; have compassion, Lord, on me! words: Fanny Crosby (1820-1915); music: Mark Ribera, 2011 Liturgical Arts Kyle Ragsdale 13 Valediction based on Psalm 103 Leader Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. People Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Leader From everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children. People The LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. All Praise the Lord, my soul. Departing Hymn “Your Mercy, My God” All Your mercy, my God, is the theme of my song, The joy of my heart, and the boast of my tongue; Your free grace alone from the first to the last, Has won my affection and bound my soul fast. Without your sweet mercy, I could not live here, Soon sin would reduce me to utter despair; But through your free goodness my spirits revive, And he that first made me still keeps me alive. Your mercy is more than a match for my heart, Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Dissolved by your goodness, I fall to the ground And weep to the praise of the mercy I’ve found. Great Father of mercies! your goodness I own, And the covenant love of your crucified Son; All praise to the Spirit, whose whisper divine, Seals mercy and pardon and righteousness mine! words John Stocker, 1776; music Sandra McCracken; Same Old Dress Music, 2001 14 Benediction Worship Guide Our household worship this week is focused on getting a vision of God as the righteous judge. One of the ways that our Scripture helps us turn from anger and destruction of other people in our hearts, with our words, or by physical attack, is reminding us that God is Judge, that God will bring about perfect and righteous, swift and sure judgment. We will be slowly walking through Isaiah 63 to grow in this vision of God in His holy justice. Monday, May 18th Scripture: Isaiah 63:1-2 Song: All Hail the Power vs. 1-2 pg. 2 Prayer: Pray that your heart would be lifted up to see God coming from Heaven in His righteous glory and Holy justice, mighty to save you. Tuesday, May 19th Scripture: Isaiah 63:3-6 Song: All Hail the Power vs. 3-4 pg. 2 Prayer: Pray that you would see God as the God of Holy wrath and vengeance, and praise Him that He the Judge became our sin and was judged on our behalf. Wednesday, May 20th Scripture: Isaiah 63:7-9 Song: ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus vs. 1-2 pg. 5 Prayer: Praise God for His steadfast love, that he has not forsaken us His children, and that in love and pity He has redeemed us. Thursday, May 21st Scripture: Isaiah 63:10-14 Song: ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus vs. 3-4 pg. 5 Prayer: Ask forgiveness that you have been a rebellious child, even after God has delivered you by His Holy Spirit. Why do I have to study it? On the other hand, is it ever possible to be adequately equipped to perfectly interpret and apply Scripture? The Bible is a revelation of God’s truth, a gift to us, His people. It is His living Word, breathed out by Him, and it is sharper than any two-edged sword. It was given so that we may believe in Jesus and follow Him. The Bible makes wise the simple, restores our souls, and lights our paths. God has put the Bible into our hands in a language we can understand, so why is it that we often feel inadequate when approaching Scripture? Might it be because we come to the Bible with assumptions, misunderstandings, cultural baggage, and our own agendas? We need to be encouraged to slow down and truly study and savor the Word of God, humbly dependent on the Spirit’s help. This summer our all-adult CT&T class is “Being Equipped to Study Your Bible.” The class will run for 8 weeks, all of June and July, on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. in the Underground. We will talk about hermeneutics (interpreting the Bible), which includes considering grammar, syntax, semantics, historical and cultural context, and the various genres of Scripture. There will be both teaching and practicing, so get ready for a highly practical class! Our aim is simple: to equip you as you seek to grow in knowing and following Jesus. Contact [email protected] with any questions. 16 Announcements Today in the Welcome Center: Mini Class on “RedeemerKids” CT&T Join us in the Welcome Center after 1st service.
