STLP Trip to Morehead
On November 30, 2010, the Charles Russell STLP went to Morehead State University to present a
project called Tall Tale Theatre. The tall tale by Alannah Molenda that was presented was named
Annie Oakley vs. Thunder Rose. Eleven more students helped out with this tall tale; their names are
Abby Crites, Bentley Meade, Makenzie Lucas, Blaine Collins, Zachary Stafford, Chase Goodrich,
Tommy McGlone, Aaron Simpson, Sarah Ratliff, Leah Smith-Mensah, and Hattie Killin. When our
showcase team arrived at Morehead, some of the students stayed at our presentation table so that
the judges could interview the characters, while some explored other presentations from different
schools. We also interviewed kids at their school’s table. To make our tall tale we used Windows
Movie Maker, MS Paint, Photo Filtre, and Audacity. Our showcase team got back to Charles Russell
Elementary at 2:15. The next day we found out that our Tall Tale Theatre got 111 points out of 112
points and Charles Russell’s showcase team is going to the state competition. Leah Smith-Mensah

Veterans Day
Turkeys, Turkeys, Turkeys!!!!
On November 11, 2010, the whole Charles
Russell Elementary School went to the
Veterans Day Program. The Charles Russell
gym was filled with people like, students,
parents, and veterans. They did this because
they wanted to celebrate with the veterans that
have fought and died for our country. Some
cool things the CRS students got to do was say
the pledge and sing patriotic songs. Sami
Taylor started us off with the pledge then Jared
King sang the Star Spangled Banner. Then all
the veterans introduced them selves. Then
mayor Tom Kelley spoke and quoted “ To hear
the sound of those children saying the pledge
is beautiful”. Six-teen years ago Cathy Goble
began the Veterans Day program here at CRS,
in memory of her father. Marty Gute
commissioner told the history of Veterans Day.
Alfred King, a Kansas business owner, was the
one who said we should make a Veterans Day.
President Eisenhower signed the law in 1954
to make Veterans Day official. Mike Wurts,
Kentucky President of the American Veterans,
spoke and said that 10,000 MIA’s and POWs
are still missing. The veterans said they loved
the pledge and the songs our CRS students
sang. Afterward, all the students and staff said
thank you to the veterans with cards and
shaking their hands. – Makenzie Lucas
The primary students made a lot of turkeys
down by their classrooms. They made all sorts
of turkeys. One turkey has white paper,
colored with different colors. In second grade
the turkey is holding a scroll that says “ I’m
thankful for” and then the students wrote what
they were thankful for. One turkey is dressed
like Santa; it is so pretty. It looks like cotton
balls and velvet. One is silly and pretty; it is a
zebra dressed up like a fairy with a skirt that is
pink and fluffy. This one is my favorite--it’s a
princess and it has real feathers, a paper
crown, and beads. The biggest turkey
everybody worked on and made it. They used
construction paper hands and feet; I like it.
Another turkey has “ I am thankful that I can
read these words!” written on the body. The
different colored feathers have words on them
that the students know how to read. All the
turkeys are really good. –Makenzie Lucas & Abby
Crites

The Mysterious Magic Show
Kindergarten Feast
On November 5, 2010, in the CRS gym, Mr.
Booth, the Magic Show guy, came in to show
us some magic. A lot of students got to do
magic like Preston Ledford got to go up and he
was the dummy; it was so funny. Mr. Booth
told us not to use drugs, what drugs can do to
our body, and how people act when they do
drugs. In one act he showed us a magic trick
with a coin. He threw a coin in the air and
caught it in the palm of his hand but when he
turned it over, the coin was on the top of his
hand. He told us to show respect to each
other. Everybody liked the magic show—it was
awesome! -Abby Crites & Carrina Hensley
On Tuesday, November 22, the kindergartners
had a Thanksgiving feast. Mrs. Geyer’s class
held their feast in the gym and Mrs. Bonner’s
class held theirs in the classroom. Some of the
students had headdresses and paper bags
with armholes that were decorated with
symbols to look like Indians. Others had hats
and collars to look like Pilgrims. First they said
what they were thankful for. Then they ate
cranberries, nuts, beef jerky, cheese, carrots,
popcorn, grapes, rolls, and apple juice. Most
of them loved cheese and beef jerky, that’s
very surprising! -Jake Damron & Sarah Brison
Turkey Mats and Turkey Smart
On November 11, 2010, Mrs. Blankenship’s 1st
grade class did a project that has to do with
turkeys. They learned a lot of turkey facts, like
the male turkey is called a tom and the female
turkey is called a hen. Young turkeys are
called poults and the wattle is the floppy thing
that hangs from their throat. They had a paper
that had little pictures of turkey things. They
had to match the picture to the facts. Then
they colored turkey placemats. Mrs. Janice
Ledford read them a book while they colored
their turkey mats. While they colored they also
got to eat pilgrim food like honey dipped turkey,
kettle corn, rolls, and juice. –Alannah Molenda

Snakes
Oakview Printing Services
On Friday, November 19, 2010, Mr. Josh
Skaggs came to Mr. Manning’s class to talk
about different types of snakes. He brought an
Egyptian Sand Boa. He also brought a couple
of snakeskins. He let the students feel the
snakeskins. The Egyptian Sand Boa has a live
birth and is scaly and slimy. He said lots of
snakes grow up to be 3 ½ to 4 feet long. Mr.
Skaggs told us that his snake would only eat
white mice; it wouldn’t eat brown mice. Mr.
Skaggs’ snake will usually live to about 27-30
years. At the end he brought out the
snakeskins; first he
showed little
snakes. Then he
asked Mr. Manning
to come over and
help him and the
kids were like
“what’s going on?”
Then he brings out
this long python
snakeskin that’s 25
feet long! It was a
very interesting talk.
For STLP showcase, Oakview intermediate
students, Chase, Spencer, Connor, and
Madeline did an entrepreneurial project. In
their project they chose to write about their
school’s printing services. The printing
services provide products, which make
available different services for the community
as well as students and staff. Our favorite part
about their project was their financial reports; it
told how much Oakview makes with all of their
printing services. –Amy Moore and Casey Walter

The First Thanksgiving
Tuesday, November 30, we went to the STLP
Regional Showcase and saw lots of different
projects that all have at least one thing to do
with technology. The only one that caught our
eye was Hager’s 21st Century Family Fitness
project. All of the following participants are in
intermediate grades at Hager: Ashby, Reilly,
Molly, Savannah, Katelyn, Ty, and Sydni. One
of the participants told us that the purpose of
this project was to make families healthier.
They also told us that this is a community
service project. There were many interesting
features about their project, but we only found
a few that we want to actually include in our
article. Like they had weights to show that
there are ways to exercise and another one
that caught our attention was they were playing
music. They also had a very colorful display.
Thanks for reading our article. Laura Johnson,
On Friday, November 19, 2010, Mrs. Janice
Ledford came to Mrs. Blankenship’s 1st grade
class and taught the students about the first
Thanksgiving. She let them color a Pilgrim or
an Indian. Mrs. Ledford read “The First
Thanksgiving Day” while the students colored.
She brought in an arrowhead and all the kids
were like wow! After they all finished coloring,
she let them have a chocolate or vanilla
cupcake that was a turkey. At the very end
she brought in a dot-to-dot number page
counting by twos. It was hard to some of them
but most of them got it. It was a lot of fun and
the kids loved it. –Chloe VanHorn

Native American Burial Grounds
Straight from the Horse’s Mouth
Crabbe Elementary did a showcase project
called Native
American Burial
Mounds.
Participants in the
activity were
students, Spencer,
Julia, Savanah, and
Brookly. The
purpose of the project was to instruct people
about Native American Burial Mounds. The
project was instructional. Some features were
the facts, photos and locations of some burial
mounds. Bryan Lucas & Noah Roberts
Oakview Showcase did Straight from the
Horse’s Mouth, which was about the World
Equestrian Games. The World Equestrian
Games took place in Kentucky this year. Mrs.
Ryan’s
students
were the
participants
in this
activity. This
teaches
students
about the
World Equestrian Games. We like the pictures
of the horses and people with the horses best!
Poage Paparazzi
-Aryn Hughes & Kylie Thomas
At Poage, Dylan, Luke and Daniel take pictures
of students and they hang them in the school.
Sometimes they put them on Poage’s website.
They take pictures at school assemblies,
parties, and other activities. It’s nice that they
take time to take
pictures of the
students. They
are intermediate
students and
they set up a
showcase about
“Poage
Paparazzi”.
Save the Animals!!!
Two girls from Mason County wanted to help
animals from around the world. The
technology of this project is to help their local
animal shelter and teach their school and
community about ways that they can protect
and save helpless animals. They
accomplished this by using a brochure, a
bulletin board, and a keynote presentation.
They showed how to make a DVD after editing
video footage from the field trip to the Mason
County Animal Shelter. They wanted to do this
project because they don’t like animals getting
hurt, that are endangered, or put in the pounds.
The students love animals as much as their
family. They love to hug them and kiss them. I
love this project. It’s sad and wonderful. I’m
glad I picked this piece on saving animals from
around the world. If this piece gives you some
information, please think about saving animals
and helping them. –Carrina Hensley
-Sydney Jackson & Breck Oppenheimer
Tailgate with the Tomcats
We did our project on Tailgate with the
Tomcats for Oakview. The people that worked
on the project were Mrs. Clayton, Mrs.
Campbell, Mykala,
Kade, and Emily.
The purpose of this
project was to
support breast
cancer and to
support the
Tomcats. This
project was a community service project.
Some interesting features were the football and
the football helmet. We liked the photos of the
football players and the trophies. –Cody Blevins &
Keeston Clark

On November 30th, 2010, at the Morehead
State University, the STLP showcase was held.
All of the kids on the STLP team from Charles
Russell Elementary wrote articles, but Carrina
and I were cyber reporters. We started walking
around and I turned my head to look at the
showcases and saw this catchy title called
“How to Use an iPad”. Next I went up to them
and they explained to me how to use an iPad.
They said it is pretty simple if you know how to
use an iPhone or iPod touch, although you
have to be careful on your data usage because
if you go over it can start deleting some of your
applications. Applications are apps you can
use to help research things, play games on,
and use the Internet. It is very fun to have and
use. You have to be very careful when using
it. We learned a lot. I was glad they told me
about the data usage because I could have
gone over on my mom’s iPad and caused it to
erase some of her apps. I hope you enjoyed
reading my article. –Cassandra Holbrook
United Way
What a generous group of educators we have
in the Ashland Schools! The good folks in our
district have donated $4,069 to United Way.
That is up from $2,436 last year. In spite of
these tough economic times our people have
stepped up to the plate and donated to this
worthy cause. Once again, additional kudos
go to Charles Russell for donating a total of
$695 and Blazer for donating $1,389. Please
take pride during this Holiday season that your
donations will be well spent helping those less
fortunate. –Dr. Patsy Lindsey
