Photo by John Whalen Top Gun Welders Honored for Outstanding Achievements On May 29, Component Fabrication and Assembly (CFA) leadership held a luncheon to honor “Top Gun” welders for their 2014 achievements. “Top Gun” welders are considered to be the best pipe welders within the CFA organization and are selected based on the number of pipe joints welded as well as the highest pass rate of pipe joints requiring a Radiographic Testing (RT) inspection. Before presenting each welder with a special “Top Gun” denim shirt, General Foreman Rob Lane congratulated the team for achieving more than 3,000 X-ray welds. “This is the largest number of welds our team has stacked up since 2001,” Lane said. “Clearly the number of welds is impressive, but it’s not just the volume, it’s the quality performance that’s so outstanding and important.” Gary Fuller, director of Welding and Aylin Robertson, director of CFA, were also on hand to celebrate the welder’s accomplishments. Among the elite class of welders, Jake Fiala, Mabel Harris and Michael Taylor received special plaques for achieving “Top Gun” status for five or more consecutive years. Taylor said, “It feels great to receive this recognition. I’m grateful and blessed to have this opportunity.” The 2014 class also included five women and six first-time honorees. Pierrette Swan, one of the six new welders to become a “Top Gun,” said, “It’s an honor to be part of this group.” The L.E.A.R.N. Program will host its first event of 2015. Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin will speak on the current state of NNS during an after-work event from 4:30-6 p.m. in the James River Room (B520-6) on Thursday, June 4. Prizes and refreshments will follow the presentation. The event is open to all employees and by reservation only. Visit the L.E.A.R.N. Yardnet website to sign up. To recognize their efforts, Pipe Shop leadership treated the team to a pizza luncheon. Safety Task Team Lead Terry Gray (X42) kicked off the lunch event by thanking members for their participation. “Being a safety task team member can be discouraging at times,” he said. “But each of you have persevered and have come together as a team to make a difference.” First row (L to R): Gary Sullivan, Casey Bill, Jonathan Daughtrey, Billy Davis, George Liufau, Matthew O’Quinn and Kelly Gilliam. Second row (L to R): Terry Gray, Stacy Hoggard, Andre Norfus, Tony Boone, Jonah Figgers, Charles Davis and Michael Taylor. Third row (L to R): Billy Williams, Chad Powell and Brad Bradby. Photo by John Whalen This year, the team has set a goal to make 240 improvements to pipe shops around the shipyard. Antonio Boone (X42) is one of the ergonomic auditors on the team. “When I see something ergonomically incorrect, I think of ways to resolve the problem and then execute,” he said. “We all want everyone to go home the same way they came into work.” “If we can make 20 improvements each month, we’ll be able to meet our goal,” Gray told the team. “Right now, we’re exceeding our goal with more than 90 improvements already made this year.” Kelli Gilliam (X18) is one of the Safety Task Team leads for the Detail Pipe Shop. “My main responsibility is to ensure that the risks in our shop have been identified and that they have been retired,” said Gilliam, who also made a special cake for the event. “I like to personalize things and I thought it would be good for us to have a cake to celebrate our accomplishments. The cake symbolizes what we do — get the message out to everyone that safety is personal.” Engineering & Design Rotation Program Graduates On May 19, the Engineering and Design (E&D) Rotation Program, Cohort 1, celebrated its graduation ceremony. Family, friends, program coordinators, mentors, management and senior staff attended the event. Every six months for the past two years participants rotated to a new area of the shipyard to learn how different departments operate, contribute to process improvements, share lessons learned, provide their own expertise, and increase their Newport News Shipbuilding breadth of knowledge and experience. Rob Hogan, vice president of Manufacturing, was the keynote speaker and shared great success stories about participants who rotated through the Manufacturing Division. “The E&D Rotation Program is a best practice for other manufacturing businesses to model because it gets the right people in the right jobs creating engagement and a passion to excel, facilitating process improvements, increasing awareness of different shipyard opportunities, and developing future shipyard leaders,” said Hogan. E&D Rotation Program, Cohort 1 graduates with Rob Hogan, vice president of Manufacturing, left center, and Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, right center. Photo by John Whalen Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, added, “Your willingness to take on the challenge of the unknown is a testament to the kind of bravery and curiosity that makes each of you valuable assets to this company. I am very proud of you and the success you have achieved in this program. You have certainly set the bar high for those who follow.” Rotation Program Directors Ray Montgomery and Jim O’Brien told the graduates and the audience to look around the room to see future shipyard leaders, and encouraged graduates to continue challenging the status quo. Congratulations for a job well done, Cohort 1! Contact Wayne Potter, Rotation Program Manager to learn more about this exciting program that is designed to develop future shipyard leaders. Brittany Pollock (O20) and Sarah Watson (E27) were among seven employees who volunteered at the NNS booth located on the Virginia Beach boardwalk. Pollock, who has volunteered the last three years, said, “I try to help at as many shipyard events as I can. It is a great way to show support for the community.” Watson, another repeat volunteer, explained why she enjoys the event. “I like the atmosphere of the festival because everyone is in high spirits,” she said. “I love meeting different people who visit our booth, especially veterans, shipbuilders, and people who have served on submarines and carriers the shipyard built.” This is the fourth year NNS has participated in the annual event that celebrates military members and their families. 2 4 CURRENTS 6 | 1 | 2015 DATEBOOK JUNE 4 NNS President Matt Mulherin will speak on the current state of NNS during an after-work event from 4:30-6 p.m. in the James River Room (B520-6). The Newport News Shipbuilding License Plate has been approved by the State of Virginia and the Virginia DMV. The plate is currently in production and is expected to be available to the public in the fourth quarter of 2015. Shipbuilders who preordered the plate through NNS will receive it in the mail when they are available to the public. Note: There were some applications that were missing information such as the car’s VIN number. NNS made several attempts to contact these shipbuilders before sending the applications to DMV. Incomplete applications were not submitted. If you have any questions, please contact Jeremy Bustin at 380-4384. (The above image is a concept proof from NNS. Final image may differ from the one shown here.)
