Virginia-Class Submarine
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) christened the 10th Virginia-class submarine,
Minnesota (SSN 783), on Saturday, Oct. 27. Minnesota is about 88 percent
complete and is on track to complete in 62 months -- 11 months ahead of contract
schedule. Construction began in February 2008, and the keel was authenticated
in May 2011.
“Minnesota is the sum of all her parts,” said the Ship’s Sponsor Ellen Roughead.
“Everything and everyone who has contributed will be an ingredient in the spirit
and the force that makes Minnesota. The great shipbuilders of Newport News
Shipbuilding and the countless men and women across our country who had a
hand in the millions of parts and components that have gone into the ship have
given Minnesota her backbone, her muscle and her nerves.”
As many as 1,000 shipbuilders worked on Minnesota. “Shipbuilders are the faces
of American manufacturing, American quality and American pride,” said NNS
President Matt Mulherin. “They understand the important role they play in
ensuring our freedom.”
Oct. 29 - Nov. 2, 2012
Newport News Shipbuilding
(NNS) was awarded a costplus-fixed-fee, level-of-effort
contract option valued at $142.7
million from the U.S. Navy on
Oct. 25. The contract option
is for work on operational
and decommissioning U.S.
Navy submarines, conversion
submarines, special mission
submersibles, submarine support
facilities and related programs.
NNS is the prime contractor
for the work, which will
include engineering, design,
configuration management,
integrated logistic support,
database management, research
and development, modernization
and industrial support. Work is
expected to begin immediately
and continue through September
2013.
“No one will take better care of
these products than we will,”
said Jennifer Boykin, vice
president, engineering and
design. “These ships represent
the very best of American
craftsmanship... cont. on p. 3

E21 Shipbuilders Steer the
Way in “Blue”
Over the past several months, piping
and ventilation shipbuilders in E21
and E58 have been transitioning into
one department. To make for a smooth
transition, the team, now identified
as E21, has been hosting luncheons
and after-work group outings to get
to know each other. On Oct. 16, the
shipbuilders were given blue “Team
E21” t-shirts by department leadership
as part of an activity to facilitate
engagement among the team.
“Throughout the transition, I’ve
learned that engagement is an
intensely local phenomenon,” said
Haidee Lockhart (E21). “It is
exciting to see the commitment in
everything we do as E21. In the future,
we plan to designate special days to all
wear our ‘Team E21’ t-shirts.”

Tone-at-the-Middle
The “Tone-at-the-Middle” feature
highlights what Newport News
Shipbuilding managers are doing to
apply company values and ethical
standards to their daily work.
Peder Wennberg
O57 Manager
Q: What do you do
to communicate
the importance of
workplace ethics
and doing the
right thing?
A: It is a separate topic in every
weekly staff meeting held by myself
and my management. We have
many new people coming into the
company and it is important to
engage and impress upon them,
as well as the veterans, what we
stand for and what our expectations
are. We emphasize, “know your
procedures and work to your
procedures.”
Willa M. Williams
O95 Manager
Q: How do ethical
values and
commitments
apply to decisions
middle managers
have to make?
As part of our focus on Quality this month, we are highlighting Quality
Inspection this week. Inspection is not an easy job and it is the inspector’s
responsibility to work independently from other shipyard workers to find
deficiencies and get them corrected before they become bigger and more
costly to the company or the customer. To ensure that Newport News
Shipbuilding’s inspectors are highly qualified, the company has developed
an extensive training program to ensure its inspectors are thorough and
consistent in their inspection of our nation’s naval assets.
A: Ethical values and commitments
come into play in every decision
not just for middle managers. When
you have to make a decision or a
commitment it should be based
on the facts at hand and doing the
right thing. Doing the right thing
applies not only to the immediate
situation, but how it fits in the bigger
picture. As Payroll Manager I have
to ask myself if the same answer is
the same each time the question
is asked. If not, then I need to
reconsider. As managers, we need to
ask are we being consistent and fair
in our decisions for the business as
well as for our employees.
“It is our vision to be the leader in quality and performance excellence and
be considered value added by our customers,” said Tom Chamberlain,
director of Quality Control.
