Photo by John Whalen Minnesota Delivered Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) delivered Minnesota (SSN 783) to the U.S. Navy on Thursday, June 6. The boat, the last of the Block II Virginia-class submarines, delivered nearly 11 months ahead of schedule. “This vessel embodies the unwavering spirit of her sponsor, Ellen Roughead, the pride and commitment of our shipbuilders, and the strength of her crew,” said Jim Hughes, vice president of Submarines and Fleet Support. “We are extremely proud to deliver Minnesota to the U.S. Navy.” Construction of Minnesota began in February 2008, and the keel was authenticated in May 2011. The 10th Virginia-class submarine, named to honor residents of Minnesota and their continued support of the U.S. military. “This is a success story of the team building and teamwork between the crew and shipbuilder,” said Cmdr. John Fancher, Minnesota’s commanding officer. “The team reached the finish line together with quality craftsmanship by the shipbuilder coupled with a crew that was given the opportunity to train as necessary to operate the submarine to its fullest extent during the combined trials. Words fail to fully describe how proud I am of the entire crew when I think of how far we have come since starting this journey over 30 months ago. They have achieved every goal that has been set in front of them, and done it exceptionally well.” June 10 - 14, 2013 NNS on! Wednesday, June 12 is our first Sidewalk Sale! X31 Shipbuilders Honored for Going More Than Seven Months “Accident-Free” On May 23, the X70 team working on USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), along with the Management Development Center (MDC), recognized 185 shipbuilders on the X31 Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) team for going more than seven months without an accident. Chris Miner, Thomasina Wright, Marcus McCormick, Dave Cullen, Ray Bagley and several other program leaders were on hand to recognize the hard work and focus on safety demonstrated by the team. Marcus McCormick, CVN 72 X31 Lead General Foreman, congratulates X31 shipbuilders on a job well done. Many of the shipbuilders on the team believe that achieving this safety goal is a great accomplishment considering the difficult work environment and number of individuals involved in the work the team performs each day. The deckplate craftsmen attribute the team’s success to proper R.E.C. (recognize, evaluate and control), better communication involving the actual work to be accomplished, foremen spending more time on the deck plate, and utilizing the “best friend at work” mindset. Give Blood. Save a Life. Visit the Red Cross Bloodmobile at 8:00 a.m. on June 18 at Bldg. 802 (NetCenter) or at 7:30 a.m. on June 20 at Bldg. 520 (Visitor Parking Lot). JUN 10 CURRENTS p. 3 Information Regarding Dependent Benefits Huntington Ingalls Industries is in the process of verifying all dependents covered by company benefits. Letters mailed to all affected employees explain: “The majority of healthcare costs are for dependents. Other companies who verified dependents in their health plans have reported between 5 to 15 percent of dependents were not eligible dependents at all. HII has the fiduciary responsibility to the health plans to ensure that only eligible dependents are provided coverage.” The letters include directions for submitting proper documentation (marriage certificates, birth certificates, etc.) to maintain benefits for their dependents. Non-verified dependents will lose their benefits on July 1 and will not be eligible for COBRA. For more information, call the Huntington Ingalls Benefits Center (HIBC) at: 1-877-216-3222. Changes to Short and Long-Term Disability Effective July 1, 2013, Huntington Ingalls Industries is transferring the administration of the Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) plans for eligible salaried employees from Unum to Prudential. This provider change will not impact employees on STD or LTD with a date of disability prior to July 1, 2013. As a reminder, all eligible salaried employees must first contact the Leave of Absence (LOA) Administration Department (K24) at 688-3800 to request a medical leave of absence and initiate the claim process. Additionally, payment of disability benefits due to the birth of a child may require additional medical documentation to support absences longer than six weeks from the date of birth. Contact the LOA department for more information. Construction of Dry Dock 3. NNS Photo archives. Volunteers Still Needed for “The Yard” Boat This Week in NNS’ History Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) “The Yard” team is still seeking volunteers for the FM99 Boat Building Contest this Saturday, June 15. The event will be held in Suffolk from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Spectators are welcome to attend. Contact NNS’ Team Captain Stiles Bliss (E25) at 534-1199 for more information. On June 15, 1905, work is authorized for the construction of Newport News Shipbuilding’s Dry Dock 3. Construction of the concrete, 459-foot long dock was completed in 1908. NNS Summer Nights are Back CYBER T.I.P.S. Protect from Vishing/VoIP The NAVSEA 08 Cyber and Physical Security Audit that was scheduled for this week has been postponed. A new date has not been scheduled. Vishing is the criminal practice of using social engineering over the telephone system, most often using features facilitated by Voice over IP (VoIP), to gain access to private, personal and financial information from the public for a financial award. The term is a combination of “voice” and phishing. Attackers automate scripts to dial multiple people and cast a wide net that ultimately catches a few unsuspecting customers of the bank or company they have spoofed. The attackers can download CallerID software that allows them to show whatever phone number they want to. For additional information, contact Steve Simmons (O15) at 688-5287 or visit the Operations Security (OPSEC) Yardnet website. For additional information, visit the T51 Yardnet website. The Communications Department has received 300 free tickets to the Peninsula Pilots game on Thursday, June 27. Employees of Newport News Shipbuilding (and subsidiaries) can pick up tickets from the Communications Office in Bldg. 520 on a firstcome, first-served basis. Employees are initially limited to two tickets each, but may request additional tickets upon availability. Discounted tickets are also available. Contact Kimberly Zayakosky (O29) at 380-4460 for additional information. NOTICE NAVSEA Audit Postponed CURRENTS p. 4 JUN 10 Staying Engaged The annual Engagement Survey questions are designed to reveal the connections employees feel to their work, their teams and the company. Twice a month in Currents, shipbuilders will share what they believe are at the heart of each survey question and what is working well for their teams. In this issue, read thoughts on: “Q5: My supervisor, or someone at work seems to care about me as a person.” Norman Stith Jr. Master Shipbuilder O53 Material Handler “Our supervisor goes above and beyond to demonstrate her affection for the team. As an all male team, we share the same feeling for her and one another. Everyone’s well-being is important to her on and off the job. Personal things like birthdays, anniversaries, job milestones are all important. They are definitely morale boosters for us. We enjoy each other’s company so much that we look forward to the next opportunity to work together. With this atmosphere on a daily basis, our job production is at its finest.” What is working well for your team? “Communication is the main ingredient for our team’s success. Our supervisor makes a constant effort to ensure we have the right tools for the job. If we see a team member needing help, we don’t hesitate to jump in. We work well together because our supervisor ignites the team spirit DAILY, kudos or discrepancies -- we all get it as a team. We know what’s expected of us each day and pride ourselves on making this happen. Building quality ships is our goal.” Michelle Major Master Shipbuilder O95 Payroll Department “If I am not here on time, my co-workers give me a call to ask, ‘Is everything ok?’ I like the idea that my friends give me a warm ‘hello’ and check when I am not my usual self. My friends show concern because I show concern; it is not a one way street. To receive you have to give. I love to give -- remembering I am here to do a great job. Knowing someone thinks about me makes me happy, and like everyone, we do our best when we are happy.” What is working well for your team? “Our team has meetings and open discussions, and realizes that everyone is not the same. Respect for each another is key. Organizing some social activities to unite the team (cooking contests, collecting can goods, wearing our favorite football jersey) to see we have more things in common than just at work.” Want to know what other shipbuilders are saying about Q5 of the Employee Engagement Survey? Read responses on Yardnet. What Does Gallup Say About Q5? A productive workplace is one in which people feel safe — safe enough to experiment, to challenge, to share information, to support each other, and in which team members are prepared to give the manager and the organization the “benefit of the doubt.” None of this can happen if team members do not feel cared about. Relationships are the glue that holds great workplaces together. For additional information on Q5, visit the Employee Engagement website.
