Hoefflin started at NNS in 2005 as a sheet metal
mechanic and took night school courses to prepare
himself for acceptance into The Apprentice School.
Hoefflin earned an associate’s degree in engineering
from Tidewater Community College and is currently
pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
“I am proud to receive this honor,” Hoefflin said. “It is always a good feeling to
have your hard work recognized.”

USS Kearsarge Bonds
Shipbuilder and Son
After nearly three months in Newport
News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) Dry Dock
2, USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) and its
crew are scheduled to depart NNS and
return to the ship’s homeport at Naval
Station Norfolk in the coming weeks.
For shipbuilder Charles Dunlevy
(O36), this day will come with mixed
emotions as he says farewell to his
son, U.S. Navy Seaman Eugene
Dunlevy, who is currently stationed
aboard LHD 3.
“While Kearsarge has been docked at
NNS, it has given my son and I some
special bonding time,” said Dunlevy.
“In addition to commuting to work
each day together, we also had the
opportunity to meet on occasion in the
yard and he was proud to take me on
a tour aboard the Kearsarge. NNS has

VCS Honors Quality
Craftsman of the Month
On Nov. 8, the Virginia-Class
Submarine (VCS) Program presented
shipbuilder Larry Evans (X31) with
the 2012 Quality Craftsman of the
Month Award. Evans, nicknamed
“Big E” by fellow shipbuilders,
was selected for the award by VCS
leadership for his consistent quality of
work.
“Evans’ crew is responsible for the
electrical side of nuclear systems,”
said VCS Electrical General Foreman
Keith Martin. “Larry approaches
each assignment thoughtfully and
with the goal of zero defects. He
has installed many complex and

technically challenging jobs and I can depend on each job being completed with
a high level of competence and quality.”
Shipbuilder Presented with Scholarship at CNU Event
For the third consecutive year, shipbuilder David Batdorf (X88), has been selected as the
recipient of the Charles D. Houdashell Sr. Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded
in memory of Charlie Houdashell, former superintendent of the Fabrication Department and
a graduate of The Apprentice School. It recognizes outstanding academic achievement of an
Apprentice School graduate attending Christopher Newport University (CNU), either parttime or full-time. Batdorf, a graduate of The Apprentice School’s Class of 1983, will graduate
from CNU in December with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He was formally
recognized at the 21st Annual Scholarship Donor and Recipient Luncheon and Program, held at
CNU on Nov. 8.
ASSA Hosts Inaugural
Golf Tournament to Honor
Veterans
On Nov. 11, The Apprentice School’s
Student Association (ASSA) hosted
the first annual Veteran’s Day Golf
Classic at Cypress Creek Golfers
Club in Smithfield. More than 100
golfers took part in the event aimed
at honoring the men and women of
the U.S. armed forces. The Newport
News Chapter (two) of the Disabled
American Veterans organization was
selected to receive the $2,000 proceeds
from the tournament.
“ASSA hopes to make the tournament
an annual event that creates a sense of
patriotic pride casting The Apprentice

Peninsula food insecurity rates averaging 13.3 percent (e.g. Hampton 15.5
percent and Newport News 15.2 percent). NNS’ food drive will help the
Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula meet community needs for the holiday
season.
How can you help? All non-perishable food items (no glass containers)
can be dropped off at any NNS collection box located on the first floor
inside designated shipyard buildings, warehouses and trailers. Boxes will
also be located on the piers and docks.
Departments or individuals wishing to donate money to the Foodbank can
deliver cash or check contributions (checks made payable to the Foodbank
of the Virginia Peninsula) to Brenda Roth (O18) in Bldg. 520-1 by noon
on Wednesday, Dec. 5.
For a list of non-perishable food items and additional information on NNS’
2012 Food Drive, visit the O18 Yardnet website.
Calling All Shipbuilders Who Worked on New Construction of CVN 65
Shipbuilders who are still employed at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS)
and worked new construction on USS Enterprise (CVN 65) are asked to meet
at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, at Victory Park behind VASCIC for a group
photo. The photo will be used by Defense Media in the publication’s coverage
of Enterprise’s decommissioning and may be used in NNS communications
about the ship. A charge number will be provided. For more information, contact
Christie Miller (N305) at 380-3581.
Photos Needed for the 2012 Community Report
The Communications Department (O29) is looking for photos of community
service events shipbuilders or shipbuilding departments have participated in
throughout 2012. To submit a photo, send an email to
[email protected].

Q: How do ethical
values and
commitments
apply to decisions
middle managers
have to make?
A: Managers make decisions that
can drastically impact our culture,
processes and products, not to
mention affecting people’s livelihood.
These decisions require serious
consideration and may weigh heavily
on one’s mind, but you cannot let
fear hold you back. When you center
up with your ethical values each time
you make a difficult decision, you
can sleep well at night no matter the
outcome because you did the right
thing.
Chris Yoko
E60 Manager
Q: How do you
demonstrate your
commitment to
ethics and
integrity in your
department?
A: I emphasize daily that we are
responsible for the products we
issue. It is up to us to ensure that
our products are technically and
administratively correct. Everyone on
my team understands that signing
their name to their product indicates
that we made every effort to do it
right. Equally as important, I stress
that when an error has been made,
we own it and do what needs to be
done to do to fix it. We research the
cause and identify a corrective action
to prevent similar problems in the
future. But no matter what, we don’t
cover up the problem and pretend
like it doesn’t exist.

Company Computer Reminder
When working
from home on a
company-issued
PC, it is against
company policy to
allow family members to use or access
NNS systems. Allowing non-employees
to access Newport News Shipbuilding
systems can cause unintentional data
leaks and/or allow non work related
activity to show up on IT audit logs that
can lead to disciplinary action, up to
termination.
