This fall, Newport News Shipbuilding
(NNS) is conducting two surveys
focused on improving employee
engagement and workplace safety.
Who Will Win the $1,000 Prize this Year?
Read on p. 2
Employees will have the opportunity
to participate in the Gallup Q12
Engagement survey Oct. 3 – 17.
NNS is changing the timing of the
Gallup survey to October to better
align with the company’s annual
performance management process.
Survey results can be used as
discussion opportunities for year-end
performance reviews, as well as for
establishing goals for the upcoming
year.
The second survey, focused on safety,
will take place in late September.

T-Shirt Contest Read on p. 3
NNS is partnering with Illumia, a
nationally-recognized firm, to look
at how our processes, behaviors and
culture affect safety.
Both surveys will be available
online and on paper. All employees
are encouraged to participate in
each survey and provide feedback
to help NNS work to generate high
engagement and work safer.

VCS Shipbuilders Wear
Blue to Show Spirit
The Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS)
Program held “VCS Spirit Day” on
Aug. 21 in honor of the program’s
recent accomplishments. To show
spirit, shipbuilders wore blue VCS
t-shirts designed by the program’s
contest winner Barry Lirette (X42).
“Celebrating VCS Spirit Day
reminded us that our jobs are part of
the bigger picture and emphasized
the pride that our team has when we
deliver on our commitments,” said
VCS Superintendent Rob Austin. “It
is an understanding that it takes the
whole team supporting the waterfront
that allows the craftsmen to use their
skills to build quality boats. Everyone

Shipbuilders Engage in Box
Design Competition
Newport News Shipbuilding’s
Compensation and Human Resources
Information Systems (HRIS) recently
adopted a new “Caught Ya” program
to improve employee recognition
within the department. The program is
designed to recognize employees who
provide excellent customer service
and go above and beyond to help one
another. Anyone who comes into the
department and witnesses an employee
providing this type of service is
encouraged to fill out a “Caught Ya”
slip and put it into the “Caught Ya”
box. The slips are read aloud at staff
meetings to show appreciation for a
job well done.
To kick off the program, the
department held a design competition.
First place team “Big Blue” (L to R): Pamela Pierce (O23), Blake Rougeux (O13), Jessica Brown (O13) and Eva
Latimer (O13).
Employees were divided into four groups and each group was responsible for
constructing a design for the “Caught Ya” box. Following completion of the
designs, each group was judged on the creativity of their box design.
“The first place team built a ‘Big Blue – Always Good Ships’ box and second
place built a ‘Caught Ya Stadium’ box,” said Tammy Franks, director of
Compensation and HRIS. “The entire project from the boxes and presentations
to how everyone worked in teams exceeded my expectations. I know the judges
had a difficult time selecting the winners.”
X36 Combats Summer Heat by Distributing Ice
To help combat heat on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and the surrounding work
areas this summer, X36 has been distributing ice to shipbuilders on all shifts.
In addition to drinking plenty of water to replace lost fluids, shipbuilders have
been encouraged to wear loose-fitting and light-colored clothing, eat lighter, and
refrain from drinking sugary drink mixes or caffeinated drinks.
“The ice program has been great,” said Barbara Joyner (X36). “It has allowed
workers to carry coolers straight to the job site, which has given shipbuilders
easy access to cool drinking water throughout the day. Shipbuilders have also
been able to soak towels in cool water and put them on their neck to prevent heat
stress.”
Who Will Win the $1,000
Prize this Year?

Short Term Database (I:\PROJECTS\IR&D and M&PE Program – 2013\2013 Short

ISO Audits Scheduled for Sept. 10 - 14
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) will undergo a recertification audit of its
Environmental Management System (EMS) and a surveillance audit of its Quality
Management System Sept. 10-14. This year’s surveillance audit will continue
as an “integrated” approach in evaluating key areas of these two management
systems. This means that personnel involved with discussions with the auditors
will likely be questioned on both quality and environmental aspects of their work.
Environmental, Health and Safety
(EH&S) is sponsoring a Household
Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD) that
is being held in conjunction with
Trades Day and Fire Prevention
Awareness Month. HHWD will be
held on Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to
1 p.m. in the North Yard (secondshift parking lot). The event is only
for Newport News Shipbuilding
