CURRENTS A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding FEB 17 At center, Capt. Karl Thomas, commanding officer of CVN 72 and Bruce Easterson, CVN 72 RCOH program director, pose with shipbuilders who helped to build USS Abraham Lincoln 26 years ago and who are now working on Lincoln’s RCOH. U.S. Navy Photo Shipbuilders Celebrate Lincoln’s 26th Christening Anniversary February 13, 2014 marked the 26th anniversary of USS Abraham Lincoln’s (CVN 72) christening. In honor of the ship’s anniversary, shipyard leaders, members of Lincoln’s ships force and approximately 50 shipbuilders who were part of Lincoln’s original construction and who are also currently working on the ship’s refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH), were invited to a lunchtime social to celebrate. Read on p. 2 Feb. 17 - 21, 2014 Program Director Bruce Easterson thanked the longtime shipbuilders in attendance. “Thank you for what you did in the past, thank you for what you do now and what you will do in the future,” said Easterson. During the event, the shipbuilders reminisced about building Lincoln and attending the christening ceremony. “I was an apprentice at the time” said Danny Moretz, CVN 72 RCOH ERGs Host a Lunch and Learn on Diversity Development. Read on p. 3 program manager. “Several apprentices, my mom and I attended the christening. There were tons of people, a lot of balloons – it was an incredible event to watch.” Shipfitter Foreman Neil Small added, “What’s special about this boat to me is that from keel to mast, I did all the errecting and setting work. It’s been out to sea for 25 years and now its back for its RCOH and I’m working on it again – its a special boat.” Continued on p. 3 View photos from Lincoln’s Christening Ceremony. The awards were presented to recognize the outstanding safety records and contributions to safety at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). The general foreman award was presented to Terry Nicolas. “Terry has been at NNS for 46 years and has an outstanding safety record,” said Cullen. “His work in the demolition of the dry dock complex has been outstanding. He installed safety rails on Building 4557 and hired contractors to level the ground around Dry Dock 3 so that people are safe when walking in the area.” The foreman award was presented to Andy Hammonds. “Andy works on reactor cooling pumps and has worked diligently to ensure safety,” said Cullen. “He initiates safety talks on a daily basis to keep his crew reminded about safety.” Safety trophy recipients included (L to R): Nicholas Miller, Louis Banks, Anthony Hammonds, Tommie Holloway, Rudie Riddick, William Nicolls, Gary Saunders and Ronald Barham. Photo by John Whalen The construction team award was presented to the team responsible for USS Abraham Lincoln’s (CVN 72) Rotating Shield Deck. “Earlier this year, a shipbuilder tripped over a wire cable on the ship,” said Cullen. “This team got together and immediately found a solution to the problem so that the accident wouldn’t happen again.” The team trophy award was presented to the team responsible for barge operations. “This team has operated the barge for 12 consecutive years without an accident,” said Cullen. “It’s obvious that this team takes their safety responsibility serious.” NNS Sponsors the 2014 Youth Career Expo Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) was the presenting sponsor of this year’s Youth Career Expo held on February 10 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. More than 2,500 students from the peninsula attended the event to learn about career opportunities in the region and the skills needed to acquire those jobs. During the event, Senator Mark Warner, honorary event chair, spoke to the students about the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning. Students were also able to walk around and view more than 50 exhibits from business sectors including shipbuilding, manufacturing, government public safety, finance, hospitality, construction, STEM, defense aerospace, education, automotive, green jobs, healthcare, and transportation. At the NNS booths, students were able to obtain information on The Apprentice School, take part in an Pictured (left): Shipbuilder Kevan Hutchings volunteered at NNS’ Modeling and Simulation Virtual Reality booth.
