Dan Caldwell, the pre-commissioning unit’s commanding officer, and Vice President of Submarines and Fleet Support Jim Hughes joined former Sen. John Warner and Ship’s Sponsor Jeanne Warner to address hundreds of shipbuilders and crew working to construct the Virginia-class submarine bearing Warner’s name. Photo by John Whalen Warner Reaches Pressure Hull Complete Milestone Former U.S. Sen. John Warner and ship’s sponsor Jeanne Warner visited Newport News Shipbuilding on April 3 to see the steady progress being made on the Virginiaclass fast attack submarine bearing his name. John Warner (SSN 785) has reached its “pressure hull complete” construction milestone, which signifies that all of the submarine’s hull sections are joined to form a single, water-tight unit. John Warner will be the 12th Virginia-class submarine and is the only Virginia-class submarine to bear the name of a person. Before adding his signature to a banner signed by John Warner shipbuilders and crew, Sen. Warner addressed a crowd of hundreds assembled in the shipyard’s Modular Outfitting Facility. “Nothing is safer from the enemy to a greater degree than this submarine,” he said. “Take pride, you who are... Continued on p. 2 NNS to Honor 51st Anniversary of USS Thresher Newport News Shipbuilding will honor the 51st anniversary of the tragic sinking of USS Thresher by sounding the shipyard whistle at 9:15 a.m. on April 10. Flags will also be flown at half mast on this date. April 7-11, 2014 On April 2, shipbuilders from across the yard celebrated National Walking Day with a lunchtime walk. Photo by Chris Oxley Shipbuilders Take Part in HealthWaves Walk on National Walking Day On April 2, HealthWaves hosted a lunchtime walk in honor of National Walking Day. Take pride in understanding how you are preserving freedom for our nation and for other nations for the future ahead in this ever more dangerous world in which we live.” Pressure hull complete is the last major milestone before the submarine’s christening this summer. “This is a proud moment for John Warner’s shipbuilders, both here and in Connecticut, and a significant milestone in the life of the submarine,” said Jim Hughes, vice president of Submarines and Fleet Support. “It’s a time when we can stop and reflect on all of the hard work that has gone into this important vessel, and we are especially honored to have the opportunity to share this achievement with the boat’s namesake, Senator John Warner, and his wife, Jeanne, who is the ship’s sponsor.” Cmdr. Dan Caldwell, the precommissioning unit’s commanding officer, and members of the crew also Hundreds of John Warner shipbuilders and crew members gathered in the Modular Outfitting Facility on April 3 to hear remarks from the ship’s namesake Sen. John Warner, Jim Hughes, vice president of Submarines and Fleet Support and Cmdr. Dan Caldwall, the pre-commissioning unit’s commanding officer. Photo by Chris Oxley joined the sub’s namesake in celebrating the construction milestone. “In less than 12 months,” Caldwell said, “we will cast off our mooring lines and head out to sea, where we will sound the klaxon and descend into the environment that this ship was designed to dominate. That day is much sooner than you may think and we need to be ready. We will be ready.” View a photo slideshow and video from the event on Yardnet. 671 Days And Counting... X42 Pipefitters working on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) were recognized on March 19 during a lunchtime celebration for performing 671 days accident-free. “I congratulate you on this safety milestone,” Don Suits, lead general foreman, told the crew. “Leadership can tell you how to be safe and guide you along the way, but you are the ones who have done the work and accomplished this goal. My hat’s off to you!” Throughout the luncheon, the crew held a discussion about how they have managed to remain safe. “We are careful to always stay alert and recognize, evaluate and control (R.E.C.) potential hazards,” said Randolph Scott (X42). “We also wear the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) for Front row (L to R): Raymond Wiggins III, Keith Porterfield, Absalom Montalvo, Randolph Scott and Lamont Woodly. Back row (L to R): Joshua Crum, Nathel Newby, Jason Levick, Daniel Felder, Lewis Shackleford and Foreman Glen Tyler. Photo by Chris Oxley the particular job we are working.” Foreman Glen Tyler added, “I couldn’t be more proud of this crew. It only takes a second for an accident to happen. They are always on the lookout for themselves and others. They realize that it’s not just about our crew, it’s about every shipbuilder on the boat. We might work on different parts of the ship and perform different jobs, but we are all one team.” APR 07 CURRENTS p. 3 Shipbuilder Participates in “Women in STEM Day” In celebration of Women’s History Month, shipbuilder Leslie Stewart (E42) participated in “Women in STEM Day” hosted by Nauticus’ Education Department on March 29.
