HII Awarded Advanced Planning
Contract for USS George Washington
On Feb. 4, Huntington Ingalls Industries
was awarded a $224 million modification to
an existing contract for advanced planning of
the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH)
of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington
(CVN 73).
The contract funds continued planning work
for the RCOH as well as the procurement of
long-lead materials, including items such as
pumps, breakers, valves and steel to support
fabrication of structural units.

“The company has worked closely with our
Navy partners, performing ship checks and
selected planning tasks associated with the
defueling of the ship,” said Chris Miner, vice

defueling and plan all the work associated with
a full RCOH, which underscores the Navy’s
continued commitment to ensuring this great
national asset remains in the fleet and
operational for another 25 years.”

NNS has completed RCOH work on the first
four Nimitz-class ships, and work on the fifth
ship, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), is about
60 percent complete and on track to deliver in
the fourth quarter of 2016.

ISCVN Shipbuilders
Recognized for CVN 69
Support
On Feb. 2, more than 70 shipbuilders were recognized by In-Service Aircraft Carrier (ISCVN)
Program leadership for their maintenance work
on USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). The
work was performed last year at Naval Station
Norfolk.
During the event, ISCVN leadership thanked
the shipbuilders for their outstanding work and
treated them to a pizza luncheon.
“This luncheon is a small token of our appreciation for all that you’ve done,” said Walter
Williams, manager of Administration. “Some of
you were only at Norfolk for a few months and
others were there from April to December 2014.
During your time there, you remained safe and
represented NNS well – we thank you for that.”
Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs, said, “Last year was the
first time NNS sent crews over to Norfolk for
leased labor. As you know, the work was very challenging, but you got the job done and proved yet
again that NNS has the greatest shipbuilders in the world. Because of the outstanding work you
performed, additional opportunities for work outside NNS’ gates will likely arise in the near future.
I can’t thank you enough for all that you’ve done for the program, NNS and the Navy.”
Miner encouraged the shipbuilders to let the leadership team know if they are interested in NNS
work opportunities outside the shipyard gates. “Work at Norfolk, Puget Sound, Japan and other
places will likely be available in the future,” he said. “Take advantage of these opportunities, they
provide new learning experiences and allow you to represent the men and women of NNS in a very
special way.”

SN3 Begins Work on $2M
Contract at Hanford Site
Stoller Newport News Nuclear (SN3), has
begun field mobilization as part of a fixed unit
rate contract awarded by CH2M Hill Plateau
Remediation Company on Dec. 30, 2014. The
contract is valued up to $2 million. SN3, a
full-service nuclear operations and
environmental services company, was created in
January when HII merged its S.M. Stoller Corp.
and Newport News Nuclear subsidiaries.
SN3 supports CH2M Hill’s groundwater and
soil characterization efforts at the Hanford
Site in Washington state by providing
spectral gamma, neutron, moisture and
other specialized logging services. Prior to its
consolidation with Newport News Nuclear,
Stoller provided these services at the Hanford
Site since October 2006. SN3 will execute the
new contract through 2017 with an option year
valued at approximately $1.4 million.
In the 1940s, the Hanford Site was used to
produce plutonium for weapons production
processes that left solid and liquid wastes,
posing a risk to the local environment. In 1989,
the U.S. Department of Energy, Environmental
Protection Agency and Washington State

Department of Ecology entered into a legally
binding accord, the Tri-Party Agreement, to
clean up the Hanford Site.
“Stoller Newport News Nuclear is proud to
continue supporting the clean-up efforts at
the Hanford Site,” said Pete Diakun, NNS
vice president of Energy Programs. “This
characterization and monitoring work is an
essential component of ensuring protection of
workers, the public and the environment.”
The Hanford Site has a groundwater treatment facility
located near the Columbia River in Washington State.
Stoller has provided services at this site since 2006.

On Feb. 5, HII Vice President and Chief Human
Resources Officer Bill Ermatinger sent a
message to employees regarding Anthem’s
cyber attack that accessed more than 80
million data records of current and former
members. Data includes information such as
Social Security numbers, birthdays, addresses
and employment information. Individuals
whose information has been accessed will
receive a letter from Anthem in the next
few weeks. Anthem will also offer free credit
monitoring and identity protection to affected

NNS Engineers Presented with 2015 BEYA Awards
Eight Newport News Shipbuilding engineers
were recognized for achievements in the fields
of science, technology, engineering and math
(STEM) during the 29th annual Black Engineer
of the Year Awards (BEYA) STEM Global Competitive Conference Feb. 5-7 in Washington D.C.
Congratulations to NNS’ 2015 BEYA awardees:
Tavarius Urquhart, an electrical engineer
working on carrier construction. As a systems
lead, he oversees the design, environmental
qualification, installation and testing of three
interior communication systems on Gerald R.
Ford (CVN 78).
Malcom Jones Jr., a systems engineer who
works in the strategy, architecture and engineering department at NNS, which provides
strategic direction for IT architecture activities.
Jenell Webb, a systems test engineer, is the
program manager of the shipyard’s engineering
mentorship program. He previously worked as
the chief test engineer for submarine hull, mechanical and electrical test repair availabilities.
Carroll Jones, a mechanical engineer who
began his NNS career in the project planning
department by supporting the refueling and
complex overhaul of USS Theodore Roosevelt
(CVN 71). He currently is the propulsion
engineering lead for fleet support work on
USS Harry Truman (CVN 75).
David Orie, a design engineering manager who
began his career as a marine design apprentice.
Orie is currently responsible for overseeing the
design and development of nuclear propulsion
drawings used in overhaul engineering.
Anthony Norton Jr., a nuclear engineer who
is responsible for providing second-shift support for all nuclear systems in the propulsion
plant on CVN 78.
John Banks, electrical engineer, who has held
several positions in the reactor services department, working with aircraft carriers’ AC power
distribution and ventilation systems during the
ships’ refueling.
Brandon Booker, a nuclear engineer, in the
nuclear propulsion, construction and process
engineering department who has been the lead
engineer for a number of projects on CVN 78.

History Month
Celebration Thursday
Newport News Shipbuilding’s
African American Shipbuilders
Association (ASSA) will host
its annual Black History
Month Celebration from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Bldg. 520-6
(James River Room). Special guest speaker will be
Michael S. Smith, HII corporate vice president of
Corporate Development, Nuclear and Environmental
Services.
There will also be a display of artwork featuring a
variety of mediums including paint, graphite, collages
and photography from 21 NNS artists. The event is
FREE and is open to all shipbuilders. For additional

NOTICE: Parking Closure
Feb. 20, Additional Shuttles to Be
Added to Transportation Schedule
To prepare for construction of the Huntington Ingalls
Industries’ Family Health Center, the parking lot on
Washington Ave. between 45th and 46th Streets
will close at midnight on Feb. 20. After that time, no
parking will be allowed at this location.
Employees who park at this location are encouraged
to park at the Hidens North and North Yard parking
lots and to use the shuttle bus service to get to their
work sites. To improve accessibility to the Hidens
North lot, NNS will add a 15-passenger van that will
continuously loop between Hidens North parking area
between 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. with stops on Washington
Ave. at 43rd and 50th Streets. NNS will continue to
monitor demand throughout the day to determine an
appropriate level of service and will add resources as
needed.

Sign Agreement
On Jan. 6, representatives from The Apprentice
School and Paul D. Camp Community College
(PDCCC) signed an articulation agreement that
will allow apprentices to transfer credits to PDCCC
associate degree or certificate programs.
“Our apprentices complete on-the-job training and
academic coursework in a highly structured program
that prepares them for positions of leadership within
the organization,” said Everett Jordan, director of
Education at The Apprentice School. “Through our
partnerships and transfer agreements with local
community colleges and universities, apprentices
have opportunities to complete degree programs
in business, engineering and technology. This
agreement with Paul D. Camp exemplifies our
commitment to education and the community.”

Recertification Feb. 9-13
During the week of Feb. 9-13, Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
representatives will be onsite to re-certify Newport
News Shipbuilding as a Voluntary Protection
Program (VPP) Star Worksite. NNS has been
a Star Worksite since 1995. As a VPP Star
Worksite, NNS is required to show continuous
improvement in its health and safety programs.
To ensure we continuously improve, OSHA visits
the company every three to five years to audit
records, interview employees, and review various
safety initiatives.
