Last week, Huntington Ingalls Industries

$36.7 million if fully funded and all options
are exercised. Services and products include
technical data systems development and
maintenance, electronic publishing support,

Model of Excellence
Recipients Celebrated
On Sept. 30, 118 employees were recognized with a 2015 Model of Excellence (MOE) Award during
a ceremony held at the Newport News Marriott at City Center. The evening consisted of a reception
and dinner followed by an awards presentation to honor recipients.
During his remarks, Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin congratulated each
award recipient on their extraordinary contributions and achievements in leadership, operational
excellence, innovation and technology and customer satisfaction.
“Whether it’s commercial nuclear reactors operating across our country, or nuclear-powered Navy
ships operating around the globe, you understand that we must always strive for excellence and
we must always challenge mediocrity,” Mulherin said. “Because, ultimately, the United States of
America must always win and because of people like you, we always win.”
A highlights video featuring this year’s MOE recipients was also shown during the ceremony. The
video and a list of this year’s winners is available on Yardnet.
AMSEC’s work will be performed primarily
at its offices in Newport News, with support
from AMSEC’s other locations in Pennsylvania,
California, Washington and Hawaii. The work
is expected to be completed by April 2020.
“We have an outstanding relationship with our
customer that has developed over many years
of providing them with world-class logistics
and information technology services, and
we will continue to foster that relationship,”
said William Rumschlag, AMSEC’s manager
of Information Technology and Data
Management Solutions.

HOLA Hosts Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
On Sept. 29, Newport News Shipbuilding’s Hispanic Outreach and Leadership Alliance (HOLA)
held a celebratory event in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is recognized nationally
to celebrate the contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico,
the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The event was held in the James River of
Bldg. 520 and guests were encouraged to tour the room, decorated with flags and poster boards
showing the various Hispanic countries and aspects of that country’s culture. NNS President Matt
Mulherin was the guest speaker for the event and gave a presentation followed by a Q&A session.
“I believe we had a good turnout and an intimate discussion with the company president regarding
leadership, advancement and the environment of our company,” HOLA Chair, Oliver Aguilar
(E83) said. “Attendees said they appreciated the open forum and opportunity to interact with Mr.
Mulherin.”
Tim Reynolds (E44) said, “I really enjoyed hearing Mr. Mulherin speak about diversity and the
many opportunities on the horizon. This HOLA event reminded me of the wide diversity of those
around me. We are not just shipbuilders, we are diverse Shipbuilders and there is much to learn and
share.”
Cybersecurity Sponsors Lunch-and-Learn with FBI
Cybersecurity (T51) hosted a lunch-and-learn on Oct. 1 with a Federal Bureau
of Investigation (FBI) agent for Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The FBI agent
gave a presentation about “Insider Threat” to the 50 employees in attendance.
Later in the presentation, a film was shown highlighting a man attempting to
be persuaded by foreign spies to divulge proprietary information to them in
exchange for a large sum of money.
Attendee Liz Shames (E18) said, ”I really enjoyed the whole presentation. The
speaker was engaging and really brought home how careful we need to be in a
world in which people lead such open, public lives.”
If you missed this presentation and want to learn more about insider threat, type
“InsiderThreat” in your browser for more information.

Selected SHIPs Network members attended the
11th Tourapalooza of 2015 by going aboard the
company’s locomotives on Aug. 26.
“It was a fantastic experience,” said SHIPs Event
Logistics and Development Co-Lead Stefani
Smith. “We had perfect weather, great tour
guides and a wonderful ride to the North Yard
– all of which gave us a greater appreciation for
the transportation capabilities of the shipyard.”
SHIPs’ Tourapalooza Program offers members a
chance to experience various areas at Newport
News Shipbuilding. SHIPs Network would
like to thank all Tourapalooza sponsors for
continuing to offer our members tours of all the
great areas in the shipyard where shipbuilders
are working every day to build great ships.

CMSD Awarded Sustainable Achievement Award for Water Efficiency
The Port of San Diego Green Business Network is part of the San Diego regional energyefficiency and sustainability effort that encourage conservation of resources by port tenants.
CMSD won the award for replacing two aging gas fired steam boilers with two smaller and
highly portable point-of-use electric boilers -- a benefit recognized by the Facilities Department.
Benefits of the two new electrical boilers include:
• Eliminate 100 percent of airborne
emissions
• Eliminates an outside services contract
for permit mandated tune-ups
• Reduce utility consumption
• Ends two costly Air Pollution Control
District permits
• Save at least 205,000 gallons of water
and 7,000 therms of natural gas per year
• Significantly reduces maintenance and
environmental compliance labor
• Reduces CMSD’s carbon footprint by
84,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year
CMSD was one of the seven Green Business Network members that have shown exemplary
progress implementing sustainability initiatives in 2015. Congratulations to CMSD’s Facilities
team for finding sustainable solutions and keeping CMSD’s environmental and quality
commitments to our community and customers.
HII’s SN3 Subsidiary Records 1 Million Safe Hours
SN3 (Stoller Newport News Nuclear) subsidiary has recorded more
than 1 million safe hours since its last Occupational Safety and Health
Administration lost work day case. The achievement was announced
Oct. 1 through a Huntington Ingalls news release.
“Worker safety is a core value,” said SN3 President Nick Lombardo. “This
milestone acknowledges the hard work and dedication of our employees
to support our DOE client.”
SN3 team members and subcontractors clocked 1 million safe hours
through their work with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of
Legacy Management. The company supports Legacy Management’s postclosure responsibilities at more than 100 work locations throughout the
contiguous U.S., Puerto Rico and the Aleutian Islands.
During these 1 million safe hours, SN3 initiated an assessment of the
Legacy Management Support Integrated Safety Management System
and Voluntary Protection Program to identify improvements necessary
to support safety performance, with a goal of achieving a recordable case
rate substantially below the DOE complex annual average.

NNS Employees, Family and Friends Volunteer at “Fear to Freedom”
On Sept. 26, nearly 60 Newport News Shipbuilding employees, family
and friends took part in a volunteer effort to help the ”Fear to Freedom”
(F2F) organization prepare for the upcoming year. F2F is a non-profit
organization whose mission is to redeem and restore those wounded
by sexual assault, bringing them hope and healing, and to change the
cultural understanding surrounding this issue by empowering college
students. F2F accomplishes its mission through its University Campaign,
which partners universities with hospitals and community organization
to provide F2F Kits to victims of sexual assault. To date, the organization
has provided more than 9,000 F2F Kits to victims of sexual assault.
During the shipyard volunteer effort, attendees helped unpackage and
prepare sweatpants for F2F kits.
“We heard the founder’s story about when she was sexually attacked and
how she was able to find joy again,” said David Cowley (E86). “Then we
helped prepare the kits. I was very impressed with purpose of the kits
and the way they are distributed to victims in a caring and practical way
immediately after they are abused.”
