May 9 - Newport News Shipbuilding
5 | 9 | 2016 A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding Ford-Class Shipbuilders Go Digital Over the past two months, the John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) Construction Program has taken a big step toward an integrated digital future. Approximately 15 percent of shipbuilders working on CVN 79 have stopped relying solely on 2D drawings and printed work packages to perform their daily tasks, as shipbuilders have done for 130 years. Instead, these shipbuilders use wireless connected touchscreen laptops to view 3D visual work instructions (VWIs). In February, the Information Technology Division upgraded the Wi-Fi (wireless infrastructure) in the North Yard Platen and Dry Dock 12. Crews in X11, X18, X31, X32, X33 and X42 began to receive small touchscreen laptops and training on how to use them. A digital support team is located on-site for easy access, providing training and issuing... CONTINUED ON PG 4 Proteus Completes Endurance Testing Undersea Solutions Group (USG) successfully completed endurance testing last month on Proteus, the company’s dual-mode undersea vehicle. USG, a subsidiary of Huntington Ingalls Industries, developed Proteus in partnership with Battelle, an industry leader in innovative and reliable undersea technology. The 30-day simulated unmanned mission was performed in a test tank at USG’s Panama City, Florida, facility to demonstrate the vehicle’s reliability and ability to perform long-duration missions contemplated for the U.S. Navy’s future unmanned undersea vehicles. “HII is committed to developing undersea technologies and systems that support the increased employment of UUVs in the future,” said Ross Lindman, USG’s vice president of Operations. “This test helps provide reliability data and a technical foundation for development of a new generation of long-endurance UUVs to support the U.S. Navy.” Proteus successfully completed a 30-day simulated unmanned mission last month at Undersea Solutions Group’s Panama City, Florida, facility. The annual cardboard boat building contest determines which Hampton Roads shipyard will win bragging rights to be called, “The Yard” for the remainder of 2016. The NNS team placed first with their rendition of the original USS Monitor (LSV 5). The ship held a total of 880 pounds, even holding up one of the divers for five minutes. The weight held by the Monitor broke all previous records for the competition. “The competition brought the best out of everyone involved and we came together as a group to set the FM 99 competition record,” said team member Lewis Fisher (X57). Shipbuilder Takes Safety to the Community Safety Task Team Leader Terry Gray (X42) gave a safety briefing to Newport News Shipbuilding volunteers at the company’s 14th Habitat for Humanity home on April 6. The briefing was themed, “Don’t Let Today Be the Day” and focused on the importance of watching out for others. “I wanted to emphasize the importance of caring about each other enough to inform your team member when they are taking shortcuts and doing something wrong,” Gray said. “Complacency is the main reason an accident can occur, so having someone else watching your back is important.” Prior to volunteering at any Habitat for Humanity worksite, volunteers must read and abide by the organization’s “Construction Safety Policy and Plan,” which entails safety guidelines. Terry Gray provides safety briefing to a crew at a NNS sponsored Habitat for Humanity project on April 6. Visit www.habitatforhumanity.org to learn more about the organization. SN3 Sponsors Relay for Life in New Mexico SN3 was a sponsor of Relay for Life in Carlsbad, New Mexico, on May 6. The SN3 team, along with several other teams, cancer survivors and caregivers who support the American Cancer Society, attended the event to relay and fund raise for eradication of the disease. The money raised will be invested in cancer research to save lives and deliver trusted information and caring support to people living with cancer and cancer prevention initiatives. Over 60 teams registered to take part in the overnight relay. At the start of the event, survivors took the first lap to celebrate their success of beating cancer. “I relay in honor of those who are courageously fighting the beast known as cancer, for my family members who have survived, and to honor the memory of those who have passed,” said SN3 Company Liaison Lisa Atwood. This was SN3’s 10th year participating in fundraising and walking the track as a team throughout the night. 5 | 9 | 2016 CURRENTS 33 AROUND THE YARD AME Offering Student Memberships and Scholarships Congratulations Ethics On-the-Spot Award Winners The Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) will offer a free student membership to young adults interested in advance technology and manufacturing careers. The 2016 Defense Security Service (DSS) Vulnerability Assessment is scheduled to take place May 23–27. The assessment will evaluate the effectiveness of the company’s security program to ensure compliance with the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual. While all areas of Newport News Shipbuilding are susceptible to inspection, the focal area selected for the assessment is classified holdings throughout the facility (main yard and external buildings). DSS auditors will tour facilities during first, second and third shifts. NNS 5K Registration Ends Friday Newport News Shipbuilding will hold its annual NNS 5K at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 21. The family-friendly run/walk event will begin and end at Victory Landing Park (next to VASCIC). All Newport News Shipbuilding employees and subsidiaries are invited to participate. Cost is $12 for adults and $7 for children (12 and under). Registration ends May 13. Visit www.huntingtoningalls.com/5k to register or for additional information about the event. While Andre was conducting a travel study to support his cost proposal, he noticed some understated cost elements. After looking further he discovered that a supplier had not invoiced Newport News Shipbuilding for over six months and this was causing the cost returns to be understated. The amount of this unidentified financial liability was approximately $500K. Without Andre’s attention to detail, the travel cost proposal would have been severely understated. SEEKING LEADERS The HII Family Health Center has a new Wellness Beacon Program with different themes each month. Ford-Class Shipbuilders Go Digital CONTINUED FROM PG 1 ...laptops. Foremen and superintendents are learning a new tool called Shipyard Work Integrated Management System (SWiMS), that delivers work packages and gives the foremen a real-time overview of the team and work progress. “When comparing this with the paper drawings, I would say it’s easier. I can carry my laptop with me wherever I go,” said Shipfitter Anthony Sweeney (X11). “I’m not really computer savvy and I’ve been able to learn how to use the system.” Many logistical details had to be sorted out, like where to store and charge the devices, and how to prioritize which production work should use the new format. A team of designers and planners continue to work closely with construction representatives to make sure the visual work instructions (VWIs) include the details shipbuilders need on the deck plate, including references to dimensions, material types and weld symbols. Andrew Balarabe (X18), left, and Jajuan Mathews (X82) look at a 3D visual work instruction on a touchscreen laptop in the North Yard Platen. Cover Photo: X91 Construction Supervisor Donald Doverspike tests the SWiMs Program in the North Yard Platen. As a result, many foremen, including Samuel Sykes (X11), are finding that information about their work, their team and their progress is much easier to see. “I can now pull up SWiMS versus having to go into SAP and track my crew’s hours and I can see where they are on their hours,” said Sykes. “They can even look up their own hours and that is a big plus because now we all have visibility on a job which is very beneficial when we have challenging targets to meet.” CVN 79 Construction Director Geoff Hummel and Program Director Mike Butler see the effort as a game changer. “Both craftsmen and construction management are enthusiastically embracing it,” said Hummel. “As we use it, we are constantly finding additional uses for the capability. The use of modern computing power with our product model to visualize our work has the potential to significantly improve our performance.” Butler agrees. “The implementation of integrated digital shipbuilding (iDS) on CVN 79 is another example of a key ‘game-changer’ focused on building the ship in a different way. It will enable our shipbuilders to obtain the technical and planning data they need in a much better way.” The program plans to increase the percentage of shipbuilders using the digital tools, with a goal of performing 100,000 hours of work “digitally” over the next eight months. Long term, the program aims to transition fully to digital shipbuilding for the next Ford-class carrier Enterprise (CVN 80). During an interview with USNI News, Huntington Ingalls’ CEO Mike Petters stated that the company’s ambition is to build CVN 80 with “no paper drawings... It would all be tablets and three-dimensional representations.” Watch a video about the vision for integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS).
