Ticket information: www.altoonamirror.com or www.jaffashrine.org or by calling the Jaffa Box Office at 814-944-5351 Reporter: Todd Wilkins Sr The Christmas holiday has come and gone. Our hope is that everyone had an enjoyable Christmas season. We’re looking forward to Spring temperatures and getting out for parades. The Jaffa Band had their first Christmas party at the home of Todd and Diana Wilkins on %$1' December 5. We all had a great evening and it was nice getting to know all of our families better. The Jaffa Band was happy to play for the Kiddies Christmas Party and also made an appearance at the Altoona Veteran’s Home to play for residents there. Our hope is that we were able to brighten many people’s holidays with our music. PAGE: JAFFA JOURNAL—FEB/MAR 2016 PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS Goodbye 2015 .... Hello 2016 .... where did the year go? Sometimes after parading, working the circus, sports show and other events our old bones ache a little bit. Fortunately, the Lil' Vettes have been picking up some younger members ... 3 new members joined after the last ceremonial ... and there will be some new drivers on the road in the Spring. In this day and age when fraternal and service organizations are sadly lacking in new blood, it is good to see these men taking an interest and being more than "card carrying" members. Welcome to our unit. This year Jaffa Shrine will be lead by a fellow Lil' Vette member Miles "Ken" Costello. . We look forward to working with Ken and Delores and hope to have a lot of Lil' Vettes hitting the streets to make him proud. Recently, our unit president, Charlie Cox presented Ken with a clock to commemorate his year as potentate as well as his membership in the Lil' Vettes. By the time you are reading this article, the Jaffa Sports Show will be old news .... but I am sure our unit did our job efficiently .... moving vendors in and out of the show. he does a fine job. Fred Goodman, secretary/ treasurer, will be contacting members with date and time. This is always an enjoyable evening seeing old friends after the winter break. April will, of course, be circus month ..... get your comfortable shoes and smile out and come help sell novelties at the Lil Vettes booth. . We need lots of help and every hour you can give is appreciated. This reporter is in the Sunshine State for some well deserved "down" time .... and wow has it been hot! Like the groundhog, I will see you in the Spring ..... Jim "Spanky" Edwards Our next event will be the Annual Spring Kick-off Dinner in March .... Ralph "Bud" Campbell has taken care of the arrangements for this event for the past several years and Another year has come and gone, as a time traveler I know the year still exists in the time warp. Three parades in May, one in June, and three in July meant for a busy summer. Three seemed to be the number, as the Fab Three took a second place in the MASA parade. Way to go guys. In April the Highlanders lost another of our +,*+/$1'(56 founding members. Jack Linderman caught a ride on the Black Camel. I’m sure he was still piping for the whole trip. Jack was a stalwart of the band, if there was a parade Jack would be there. Jack was my first line signer ten years ago so we had a special relationship. In July George Papas joined him, with those two Heaven will never be the same. Slan na Gael, my brothers. We are getting ready for the annual Robert Burns dinner that the Highlanders sponsor. It will be on January 23 and over when this is read, so more next time. We are always looking for a few good members. If you have a fondness for the bagpipes or drums, like to march and have a good time. come and join us. I know some Shriners who don’t belong to a unit. I can tell you guys, you are missing a great deal of fun and fellowship. We march so kids can walk is not just an empty slogan, it is real every time we step out into a parade. See you on the march. But this year, we are starting with a new set of leaders. Congratulations and thanks to the younger noble horsemen who stepped to leadership positions. 02817(' upOur president is Tyler Burchfield, sec3$752/ retary Ben Ritchey, treasurer Duane Smith, Captain Bernie Edmundson, 1st Lt. Mike Luther, 2nd Lt. James Russell, and Quartermaster Mark Miller, who doubles as our sanitation engineer during parades. Nobody volunteered to write these articles for 2016, so you're stuck with me for another year. Since our last parade at Halloween in Hollidaysburg, we have been slowed down but not stopped. We had a great Christmas Party at the US Hotel, and welcomed in the new year at Jaffa's annual celebration. Again, we were THE party, with 4 tables of party goers. The Drum and Bugle Corps was well represented, but the other units were hard to discern. Too bad! Our Mounties are as good on the dance floor as they are on a horse. At all the Jaffa parties we attend, Ben Ritchey and Mike Luther are leading the way, whether it's with a band or a DJ, It's great to have some younger blood in our unit. Fred Imler, Fred Putt and I are glad to see the new Mounties leading. Thanks to our officers of 2015, we attended all the Jaffa meetings, parades and parties, where our attendance was noticeable, and with our new leaders in 2016, we intend to lead the way again. Lead on, Mounties. Our first unit meeting of the year was in February, where we got ready for the Sports Show, led by our own Bernie Edmundson as chairman. Please remember our service men and women in your prayers, as well as some of our members who are unable to be active with us. But we are thinking about you, Tom Fletcher and Ken Keiper. By now our trusty steeds are as hairy as bears, but soon we'll be putting some corn oil or flax seed meal in their feed to get their coats shed out and shining for our first parades on Memorial Day in Juniata and Duncansville. Before we know it, the Circus will be here, and that will be the lead for the next edition of the Jaffa Journal in the April-May issue. Until the next time, sit tall in the saddle, and keep a steady hand on the reins. Ray Nycum, Jr., Reporter 83'$7()5207+(-$))$52$'5811(56 Submitted by Ray Nycum, Jr. Forty eight Road Runners dedicated 610 man hours selling 500 fir, pine and spruce trees to many local people who have supported us for many years, as well as several businesses and churches who used our trees to celebrate Christmas. As I look at it now, the trees were short and stout, tall and slender, and every thing in between. Probably resembled the 48 Road Runners who tended the lot for the 23 days the tree lot was in operation. We are grateful to Bill Ansley of Ansley RV at Duncansville for the use of a great trailer ( with heat ) that we used for our office, and Dan Wasko of Altoona Soft Water who provided us with a coffeemaker, water and coffee while we put in the long hours. If you're in the market for a travel trailer or a motor home, or water and coffee service for you office or home, please consider consulting with Bill or Dan. Most of our members put in one to four shifts selling trees, but our sales leader was Dale Wills who spend 22 shifts at the lot, followed by Mike Politti, Ray Nycum and Jake Lockard with 11 shifts, and Harry Chirdon, Jim Calvert and Ray Berkhimer with 7 shifts. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped unload trees Friday after Thanksgiving and all 48 nobles who sold the trees. A special recognition to Dick Brown who arranged for the Salvation Army to collect the trees for removal to their sales outlet location. We don't have any idea how much money we raised as a result of our efforts, but the funds will be used toward transporting our patients to the Shrine hospitals at Erie, Cincinnati and Philadelphia this year. I'm already looking forward to next year. (right) Ralph “Bud” Campbell and John Kos present a thank you plaque to Dan Wasko for helping out during the Christmas tree sale. Daughters of the Nile placed a total of three more gold plaques in the Shrine Hospitals this year and witnessed an exciting first. On August 19, 2015 the Quebec and Montreal dignitaries, the Imperial Potentate, Past Imperial Potentates and many guests dedicated the new Shrine Hospital in Canada. Also, a first for Daughters of the Nile: The dedication and naming of the second floor of this new Shrine Hospital for “Daughters of the Nile”. The privilege and honor was granted in recognition of the Daughters of the Nile’s Canadian Trust commitment of one million dollars to the hospital’s capital campaign. During this year alone, Daughters of the Nile presented $2.3 million dollars to help treat patients in the Shrine’s Specialty Pediatric Hospitals. Since its first donation in 1924, Daughters of the Nile have contributed over $56 million dollars to help make the dreams of children come true. Working toward making children’s dreams come true, the Officers of Shriners Hospitals recently announced that they were the first specialty health care system to join the Mayo Clinic Care Network. This relationship allows dedicated staff to share their knowledge and ensure children receive the best care from well-trained doctors. Dr. Kozin, Chief of Staff at the Shrine Hospital in Philadelphia, was a member of the surgical team performing a bilateral hand transplant. The eight year old boy is progressing well and has returned to school. What a medical achievement! Yes, Dorcas Temple # 129 and about 139 other Temples in the United States and Canada have the privilege of being a part of these medical miracles with their annual donations. In January, Dorcas Temple initiated new members to assist in our philanthropic endeavors. It’s great to be a Daughter of the Nile! Dorcas Temple also sponsors “Operation Bear” for our two local Shrine Hospitals, Erie and Philadelphia. Each month a total of 75 bears are sent for the children. Last month, when I visited the Philadelphia Hospital with my husband, we saw a child going home with a bear held tightly in her arms. I had a warm feeling watching her hug the soft little animal. I know the bear will receive love and bring comfort to the child. If you would like to assist in our project, send your donation to help purchase soft, cuddly animals for the children to: Daughters of the Nile, Jean Kensinger, PQ, 705 Ivory Lane, Martinsburg, PA 16662. FEB/MAR 2016 JAFFA JOURNAL—PAGE: /DGLHV2ULHQWDO6KULQHRI 1RUWK$PHULFD -REHO&RXUW Submitted by Lady Diana Wilkins, Princess We’ve all been seeing the new Shriners Hospitals for Children commercials on TV a lot lately. Everytime I see them, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride. Pride in knowing that the work we do as members of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Jobel Court #11, play a part in helping these kids. We help make sure that any child that needs the care at Shriners Hospitals gets the care they need regardless of their ability to pay. We help kids accomplish so much and we should all be proud of the work we do to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children. It’s all about the kids! Are you a member of Jobel Court #11? Would you like to be part of this amazing organization that raises money to help the kids at Shriners Hospitals? Contact us! We’d love to talk to you about joining us and get you a petition for membership. Our election of officers will be held at our February meeting with Installation on Sunday, March 20 at 2:00pm at the Jaffa Shrine. Photos and a list of our newly installed officers will be in the next issue of the Jaffa Journal. Be sure to check our Facebook page for details and photos. We are proud to report that our peanut brittle sales were a huge success. The ladies worked hard and made over 750 pounds of peanut brittle for a profit of over $5,400! Awesome work ladies! Our fundraising efforts continue into 2016 as well. We are now taking orders for our home made apple dumplings. From the rolling of the dough to slicing the apples and putting these awesome apple dumplings together and baking to perfection, the ladies work hard to bring you a wonderful treat! Orders are being taken now through February 8 and apple dumplings will be available for pickup after noon on Monday, February 15. For $4.00, you can have your own home made apple dumpling! Contact any Jobel Court member, Judy Hudson (814) 9443237 or Laverne Penn (814) 696-0194 to place your order today! At our January meeting, we welcomed 7 new ladies to Jobel Court! Five of these ladies completed their petition at MASA in Virginia Beach this past September. I can’t help but get excited when I see our Court growing with so many wonderful ladies. Welcome aboard!! Continue to watch our website for news and events on what the ladies of Jobel Court are doing for the kids! http:// losnajobelcourt.com/ and be sure to follow us on Facebook (Ladies Oriental Shrine Jobel Court #11) A VERY SPECIAL DONATION Ken & Ruth Weaver were a very dedicated couple and have been very active supporting Jaffa events during their 65 years of marriage, and have supported Shriner’s Hospitals. Recently Ken gave a six figure check to Fred Imler to present to the Philadelphia Shriner’s Hospital during the board meeting on December 10th in memory of his wife Ruth. The following is a biography of a very outstanding Shriner and his lady. Ken is a 50 year member of Hiram Lodge 616, a member of Valley of Altoona Scottish Rite, Jaffa Shrine Legion of Honor, Color Guard Unit, Ushers, Wiring Committee, and a great worker for the Circus. Ken retired from Penelec in 1988 after 41 years as Chief Lineman. He served in the Marine Corp during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart after being wounded in Iwo Jima. Ruth graduated from Altoona High School in 1945. During the war she worked at Brumbaugh Body Company and later at Sears. Ken & Ruth were married in 1947. She was a charter member of the Sweet Adelines and directed the Blair County Senior Choir. Ruth was always very supportive along with Ken in the many PAGE: JAFFA JOURNAL—FEB/MAR 2016 Shrine activities as Potentate’s Aides. Her special smile was always evident to greet everyone.
