PARACHUTE: Butler County CASA
PARACHUTE: Butler County CASA Annual Report “Speaking up for the community’s most vulnerable children since 1988” In 2013 - PARACHUTE: Butler County CASA celebrated 25 years of providing volunteer advocacy services to local abused and neglected children. We are here to stand up for these helpless children, protect them and help them get to safe, loving and permanent homes. The children are frightened and afraid, they don’t know if they will ever be safe… We must speak for The teenager who has a broken wrist and jaw because he tried to stop his drunken step father from hurting his mother, again. The 10 year old whose mother has attempted to kill herself and hurt him too. The 7 year old who is in charge of her baby brother because her mother is gone all night. The 5 year old who has no bed, sleeps on the couch and is molested by her mother’s friends who come over to get high. The toddler found walking outside at 1 a.m. because no one is home. We speak up for each innocent child with that child’s assignment to a caring, hardworking community person trained as a CASA – a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Behind these CASA volunteers are staff, board members and supporters. And CASA means success for children! A CASA volunteer investigates the circumstances of the child and their family. The CASA volunteer meets with relatives, foster parents, social workers, teachers and counselors to understand how the child is doing and determine what needs to happen for the child to move towards a safe, happy home. The CASA volunteer meets with the child on a regular basis, often weekly, to ensure they are safe and receiving services to heal from their trauma. Abused and neglected children face major barriers during their journey to safe, permanent homes. The average foster child moves 3-5 times, changing schools and placements. Studies show that children can lose six months of educational attainment each time they switch schools and can have negative and lasting effects on their emotional, social and educational development. Conversely, many evaluation studies by the U.S. Department of Justice, have validated the work of CASA volunteers to move these children to a safer environment in a timely manner to reduce the emotional impact of their situations. PARACHUTE: Butler County CASA 284 N. Fair Ave., Hamilton, OH 45011 (513)867-5010 [email protected] www.parachutecasa.org Success for CASA children means: Having a voice in court. Keeping the child safe from further harm. Helping the child end up in a safe, permanent, and loving home in a timely manner. Receiving services to help the child heal from their trauma such as counseling, medical treatment, tutoring, or receiving basic needs. Positive outcomes for CASA children in 2013: CASA volunteers worked on 172 open children's cases throughout the year. CASA volunteers attended 202 court hearings to speak for the best interest of these children. 99% of the CASA volunteers had regular and consistent contact with the children. 80% of the children cases closed to date in 2013 ended up in a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. 99.5% of the children were safe and were NOT harmed again. 100% of the children with a CASA volunteer had a voice in court. Children with CASA volunteers find safe, permanent homes more quickly, are half as likely to re-enter the foster care system, and do better in school. That’s making a profound difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of abused and neglected children across the country – over 200 right here in Butler County, Ohio have a CASA volunteer. But there are far too many children who are left to fend for themselves. These children need a voice and a caring adult by their side. Maggie – age 19 Her story: My four brothers and I were removed from a neglectful home after suffering years of physical and emotional abuse. We were separated, placed in homes throughout the county. My CASA volunteer was the only person that made sure my brothers and I got to see one another. If it wasn’t for her a lot of the things I have accomplished would not have happened – including having the relationship I have with my siblings. Foster care needs to be changed. There need to be people who are willing to help. And if I can do that, I’ll tell my story all day. If I am making a difference, that is the biggest blessing of all. Maggie is currently in her second year in college. She plans to graduate from college with a double major in communications & pre-law. She hopes to be a broadcast journalist & an attorney for foster youth. I feel I can connect to the children in a positive way.” Fred, CASA volunteer for 1 year “As a CASA volunteer the enjoyment comes from dealing with the children. No matter how frustrating the situation is (and it can change in the blink of an eye), the children bring me such joy and hope, that I just keep plugging away.” Gabrielle, 14 year CASA volunteer Chris Xeil Lyons Ann Niehaus Karey Ringland Julie Smith “My most satisfying moment was when I heard the judge say, “I agree with the CASA”, and kept the child in the safest environment.” Karen, 3 year CASA volunteer PARACHUTE’s 25th anniversary celebrated with a special event! “Children’s Breakfast” on April 25th! THANK YOU to all 100 attendees who listened as we shared PARACHUTE’s mission and the positive outcomes for children such as safety, healing and a safe, permanent and loving home. The celebration featured PARACHUTE’s Board members, Chris Xeil Lyons and Rhonda Brown and Executive Director Chris Schultz. We had special guest speakers - 7 year old Kayla and her adopted mother. In their own words, they told about how their CASA volunteer, Linda, provided care, comfort and guidance for 3 1/2 years as they experienced setbacks during Kayla’s placement. Their happy ending story was extremely touching! Judge Kathleen Romans and Judge Ronald Craft of the Butler County Juvenile Court also presided over the swearing in of 8 new Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers. We were honored to welcome new members of our “Friends of Children Society” who made pledges to partner with PARACHUTE to serve more children in need. We are appreciative of all supporters who thanks to their kind generosity and guidance, we will be able to serve more at risk children. The children deserve nothing less. 2013 Park Run for PARACHUTE On Saturday, October 12, 2013, 100 people ran, walked, and volunteered at the 7th Annual Lyons & Lyons Park Run for PARAHUTE” held at VOA (Voice of America) Butler County Metro Parks. The 5K event honors the legacy of the late Judge David Niehaus. Nearly $8,000 was raised and will be used for recruiting, training, and supervising CASA volunteers from the Butler County community. The community partnerships that we establish through the Park Run and other events give more opportunities for others to join in the important work of speaking up for abused and neglected children. 2013 Park Run Sponsors Lyons & Lyons Attorneys at Law Hamilton Junior Women’s League Frost Brown Todd Attorneys Panera Bread Robert M.
