Badin’s Future Starts with a Vision, a Forum & a Plan
The vision began February
7, 2007, with a community
meeting at Ike’s Place in
West Badin. Bill Duston and
Blair Israel of Centralina
Council of Governments
divided attending Badin
residents into two groups to
work on table-sized maps.
Here, plans were formed for
a pedestrian-friendly environment for the Town of
Badin where public spaces
offer convenience, safety
and beauty. Both groups
came up with visions of a
boardwalk along the lake
shoreline, a scenic nature
trail, and a safe crosswalk
over Highway 740. Once
plans are set, grants may be
applied for from state, fed-
eral and private sources.
On February 6, 2007, the
Stanly County Economic
Development Commission
held a forum for Badin residents at the Badin Inn in
preparation for a March 14
economic summit. Set questions were presented, the
several answers were listed
and participants voted their
preferences. Results will be
announced at the summit.
Ideas ranged from WiFi to a
dinner excursion boat on
the lake. Restoration of
West Badin School was an
issue. All agreed Badin’s
small-town atmosphere and
nearby pristine areas need to
be preserved.
On February 8, 2007, the
steering committee of the
Badin Revitalization Committee met at the Badin Inn
to form a strategic plan
from plans put forward by
four sub-committees. This
plan will be instrumental in
obtaining a grant to fund
the many projects the BRC
hopes to initiate to aid
Badin’s revitalization.

help guide local growth,
accommodate and anticipate new business and
maintain as well as augment the atmosphere of
the unique community.”

John Westbrook
On December 24, 2005,
John Westbrook opened
The Isiah Westbrook Community Center named in
honor of his father. “We
have everything from community meetings to dances
here,” he says. “It’s a place
for the teens to hang out.”
Westbrook has also bought
the building next door and
renovation plans for both
buildings include a café
downstairs, and a computer
learning lab. He has also
founded the Uwharrie Com-
munity Services Development Network to help with
plans that include a senior
day care facility. “I wanted
to preserve West Badin’s
buildings,” he says. “We
must position ourselves for
growth.”

Better Badin met on Monday,
February 12, 2007 with a small
but enthusiastic group of local
residents. New president,
Calvin Deese has stated his
goal is to build on what has
already been accomplished by
the non-profit group formed
with the purpose of improving
Badin.
New goals and special projects
were discussed. Faye Crawley
suggested these take the form
of short, medium and long

range goals. Projects discussed
included a scholarship for local
Boy Scouts, a walking and running track to be built around
the lower Badin School
grounds, historical markers to
be placed around the town,
and a $250 scholarship for a
Badin School student.
Several other fund-raising projects were also discussed.

Badin Police reported 263 calls
for service, 12 arrests, 27 traffic
citations and an increase in
warning tickets (47) in the
school zone.
The Badin Inn Golf Resort
and Club will host a blood
drive for the Stanly County
Chapter of the American Red
Cross during the month of
March, date to be announced.
The Town of Badin will pick
up limbs and brush on Tuesday, March 6, 2007. Please
place on sidewalk by 8 AM.

In conjunction with a disaster
preparedness and recovery
plan, Badin public safety personnel are compiling a list of
Badin residents who, due to
infirmities, may need help with
evacuation or other assistance
in the event of a community or
national emergency. “We owe
it to the people of Badin to
know who they are,” says
Town Councilman, Larry Milano. “A large percentage of
our small population is elderly.” If you or your family
would like to be placed on this
list, please contact Town Manager, Todd Herms, or Badin
Police Chief, Bryan Lambert at

Meet Your Neighbor: Noelani Kaluhiokalani
From Milford, Massachusetts
and now a resident of Badin,
Noelani Kaluhiokalani brings
the exotic flare of Hawaii and
its delightful culture to North
Carolina. As a child she studied
tap dancing, jazz and ballet. By
Junior High School she had
embraced the culture of her
half-Scottish half-Hawaiian
father and Dutch Indonesian
mother, and began to study the
dances of Fiji, Tonga, Tahiti
and Hawaii. In college in Massachusetts she was the co-
founder of a group of dancers,
Hula Aloha, and gave cultural
presentations of the hula and
its history.
“The last
king of
Hawaii
called the
hula the
heartbeat
of the Hawaiian people,” Noelani says. “The missionaries
banned it, but he brought it
back.” Today, Noelani teaches
the sixth grade in Albemarle
Middle School. She hopes to
teach the hula with an afterschool program. During the
Fun Day at the Park held on
the shores of Badin Lake last
fall, Noelani enchanted the
crowds with her story-telling
dance of the Islands, and she
had no shortage of volunteers
at an impromptu hula class that
followed her presentation. She
loves Badin and its village atmosphere, and Badin welcomes her. Aloha, Noelani.
Running Program for Beginners
Thinking about taking up running, Running Club is organizing a

be encouraged to continue to
run throughout the summer to
train for the September Best of
Badin Festival’s “Run the Valley” 5K/10K and 1/2 marathon. The $35 registration fee
for the beginning runner’s program includes a t-shirt and
entry fee for the Beach Blast

Badin Inn to Host Grand
Fourth of July Fireworks
The Badin Inn Golf Resort
and Club is pleased to announce it is hosting a grand
fireworks display to kick off
this year’s Independence Day
celebrations in Stanly County.
“The show will be similar in
size to last year’s Best of
Badin Festival,” says Andy
Kinnecom, club owner and
manager. “We are hosting it
on Saturday before the
fourth, so mark your calendars for June 30th.”
The club will also offer other
activities and music for the
public and members to enjoy
that day and at other events
through the year. Kinnecom
said they are already offering a
Sunday Brunch each week in
the new Johnny Palmer Dining Room and that the restaurant is open to the public.

comparable to Albemarle
hotels, ranging from $80 to
$145 per night, depending on
the season.
Kinnecom also announced
that the lodging operations
are now open and guests are
staying at the club on a regular basis. There are four guest

Plans are also in place for a
2007 music and speaker series,
and wine trail tours.
Kinnecom invites those interested in the Inn’s activities to
stop in the lobby and take a
tour of the facilities.

that are now being renovated
for additional guest accommodations, giving visitors a
varied mix of lodging options. When complete, the
