WHO ARE WE?

Team Mexico UNAM is an interdisciplinary group of students, teachers
and researchers from the schools of Architecture, Engineering, Plastic Arts, Political and Social Sciences, and Social Work, with one main
objective: to devise and develop CASA project, in order to impact positively the urban context of the Mexico City and its Metropolitan Area
(ZMVM).
Consequently, Team Mexico develops an energy-efficient, sustainable
housing prototype adequate to the economic, social an ecological demands of a city as big as their 20.1 million people living in it.
We, as college students from one of the most important universities
in Latin America, feel responsible and proud to be the first transdiciplinary team representing Mexico in the Solar Decathlon, worried
about offer solutions to these housing issues in Mexico City.

WHAT IS THE COMPETITION ABOUT
?

Solar Decathlon is the most prestige universitary challenge worldwide that impulses the investigation and the development of efficient
housing solutions.
Universities all around the world get together with the aim to design,
manage and construct houses that consume the less natural resources and that produce a minimum of waste during their lifetime by reducing the energy consumption by obtaining it from the sun.
For the contest’s final phase, the house must be transported to France,
in order to build it in the Solar Ville, a space where the 20 teams will
face ten tests to define the winner.
THE PROJECT

Our proposal has matured integrating data of Mexico’s the social and
spatial reality. More specifically, the CASA’s case study application:
Unidad Habitacional Vicente Guerrero (UHVG) located in Iztapalapa
district, an area that concentrates a lot of socioeconomic, educational,
cultural and politic problematic.
CASA follows Mexican spatial needs, in the aim of constructing a functional solution for the reality where it will be developed. Our prototype
is an enclosure that works as a net of flexible spaces that overlaps
functions and spaces.
Without forgetting the competition, CASA project is adapted for a competitive version for Solar Decathlon 2014 (SDE). Team Mexico’s proposal has been modified in its dimensions to be coherent with SDE rules.
Facing problems as overcrowding (defined as the percentage of the
housing stock where rooms accommodate 3 or more inhabitants for
overnight), water shortage, pollution, insecurity, mobility (money and
time used on transportation), energy deficit and as a way to reconstruct social fabric.

SOLAR
ENVELOPE
To address the issues regarding contemporary urban living in the
ZMVM Team Mexico has developed a housing concept with the following core principles:
TOOLBOX
CASA’s system aims to offer a “toolbox”, which can allow the user to
apply each component of the system according to their specific needs.
It’s structured into this major components:
1) Lightweight Modular Structural System, with anchoring interfaces to
varying conditions of footing.
2) Hyper-Insulated Roofing and Wall Panels with Prefab Glazing and
Operable Windows.
Intraurban: densifying the built environment, diminishing the cost of
land and reducing the distance between people and their activities.
3) Furniture-modules, a variety of storage and working spaces, all of
which could be build from the same structural-modular basis.
Resilient: acquiring a growing capacity to surpass adverse situations
without permanent rupture or deformation.
4) Services Prefabricated Cores containing bathroom and kitchen services.
Regenerative: transforming its implementation site into a healthy, diverse and abundant place towards a greater expression of life.
5) Technical rooms, they are technically articulated with services prefabricated cores and spatially consistent with the overall CASA system
module.
Symbiotical: establishing relations of mutual benefit and dependence.

So, instead of developing a finished housing unit, and in the belief that
the context conditions of the ZMVM, asks for a more flexible solution
in the form of a smart building system. The CASA system is designed
to occupy residual spaces inside the city, such as empty lots, interstitial
spaces in infrastructure, in-between partiwalls and retroffiting existing buildings as an extension in rooftops or terraces.
In approaching the design for the CASA system is inspirited in the conditions of developing neighbourhoods in the ZMVM. The prototype
emerges where these rich stories overlap.
6) Outer Skin Cover, with integrated photovoltaic panels, rainwater
collection and edible vegetation.
7) Textile system, a three-layered system of different textiles: the
first one is a self-cleaning water collector, covered with a protective-strainer net. The second is a perimeter dripper; and the third one,
an anti-radiance, waterproof (humidity repellent) envelope.
8) Living systems, sub-superficial wetlands and a plant skin-vegetable patch (Cf. Innovation report).
9) Water tower and passive hydraulic and water-heating system. This
solution might not seem very logical for the competition in Versailles,
but it is important to clarify that in Mexico, elevated water tanks are not
only the urban landscape of our cities, but the most common solutions
for hydraulic housing services. This simple solution provides the necessary pressure to have a passive flow of water.

Many things have changed since deliverable #4, but the spirit of the group is not
one of them. Many challenges, many defeats. March was a month for changes
and modifications, especially in the designing area, working on the last details,
previous to begin the hard work phase of the construction of the house. Meanwhile, structure components began to arrive to our workshop: first the three-dimensional platforms structure, then electric and photovoltaic systems and at
least the columns that will hold up the platforms. As we finished the design, our
work went into two ways: in one hand, the build-up of the house as soon as we
had the components; in the other, we dedicated plenty of time to prepare Deliverable #5.

The first days of March were dedicated to the construction of the Lightweight Modular platforms that will serve as roof and floor covers. At
the same time our team began training courses with our partners, first
in electronic with Schneider Electric in its Rojo Gómez plant, and then
with Eguía Ingeniería for security and hygiene issues.
As we had the platforms done, we started working in the electric systems, more specific, the photovoltaic system that will bring the house
the energy it needs to function. The whole cover is composed by a
high performance textile, the light weight modular structural system, a
filter net, photovoltaic panel support and photovoltaic panels.
Every one of the three Lightweight Modular Structural System is integrated by two platforms and 6 columns, each one of them can hold
1000 kilograms. This columns were collocated then. For this operation,
each one of the 3 roof cover platforms were elevated over the floor
platform meanwhile the columns were fixed to the platforms.
We worked on the Lightweight Modular Structural System on March
and half of April. When we had finished, we proceeded with the Enclosing: a hyper-insulated roofing and wall panels with prefabricated
glazing and operable windows that constitute the inner cabins protected by the external structure. Now a days, we are still working in
the enclosing.

In the topic of Communication and Public Awareness, the Speed Peer
Review gave us the possibility to see the other teams and be questioned by the organizers, it only turned into a stronger enthusiasm to
work harder as we return, to realize our ideas. We produced a Press
kit and an Instructive video for the event and making them helped us
to summarize the information we had in order to achieve our communication goals.
Also, we have been visited by the two biggest television companies of
Mexico: TvAzteca, in which we appeared in the morning news bulletin,
and Televisa, that is still preparing a short documentary.
What would happen when CASA returns to Mexico?
Once CASA comes back to Mexico, it will be exhibited as flagship project in Expo CIHAC, the biggest and most important AIC exposition (architecture, engineering and construction) in Latin America. They are
expecting that more than 75,000 persons and industry leaders will
show up.
Our team will operate and explain every component in CASA, including information of our partners and sponsors.
In November, the prototype will be installed and will operate completely in an exhibition of one year in the UNAM’s Universitary City.
Our campus, Mankind Heritage, is one of the most important cultural
destination in Latin America and one of the most visited touristic places in Mexico City.
Our prototype, with all the components, systems, materials and furniture involved will be accessible to the public.

INSTITUTIONS: The Faculty of Architecture, of the National Au-
tonomous University of Mexico through their Bachelor of Architecture
and Industrial Design, counts with the collaboration of the Faculty
of Engineering, the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, National
School of Plastic Arts; supported by the Centre of Applied Sciences
and Technological Development (CCADET), a multidisciplinary Centre
that seeks to combine the research and technological development in
many areas of the physical-mathematical sciences and engineering,
develops comprehensive projects aimed at solving relevant problems
of our environment.
The team also has the support of the Institute of Renewable Energy
through of Department Solar energy, which studies the development
of photovoltaic materials, the development of optical devices and
evaluates photovoltaic systems.

COMPANIES: Aware that the team requires the sponsorship of
private companies, public institutions, financial institutions and foundations, we started the selection of companies that will accompany
the development of our proposal in all its national and international,
presentations, exhibitions, conferences, digital media and in the competition.
For the building material partners, we searched according to the architectural design of the prototype and we plan this to be delivered before
the construction phase of the prototype. Materials will be stored in the
University (UNAM).
Being companies committed supporting sustainability projects with a
significant presence in the country would choose team financial partners. Their support will be needed to cover expenses related to aspects
of project development, transport to Versailles, assembly and disassembly in the Villa Solar.
To obtain the collaboration of these partners, the team has made a
first approach to the companies, through appointments where initial
interviews have been conducted with some of them. Now, the team is
waiting confirm the agreement and collaboration with several companies.
Dissemination of the project tries to make conscience of a sustainable
urban life style.

In the understanding that the communication and awareness activities
are fundamental in the construction of the project as a whole, Team
Mexico works on a strategy that provides not only the traditional information exchange between media, sponsors and the public, but a
more complex narrative of what CASA means.
Therefore objectives, public target, message design and channel are
the main elements of the communication plan.
Our Communications Project identifies these groups of people to
whom the team’s communication is addressed.

alliances that will help to build our prototype and develop technology in

All the problems that society face today began long time ago. Therefore,
it is mandatory to think about our child- hood as the citizens of the future and developers of technology that will solve issues they will need
to face.
Children are curious by nature, so messages for them will be simple and
channel dynamism.

In this moment young people have to make the most important choices of their lives. For that reason, our project will talk to them, trying
to share with them our personal and professional experiences at the
university.
Links between CASA and them will become an attractive experience.

University students worried about their immediate future and urban
issues researchers, will share with us their scientific experiences and

In order to increase public awareness of the CASA Project as a solution for the housing issues in ZMBM (Metropolitan Area of Basin of
Mexico) and win the Solar Decathlon Europe 2014, Team Mexico have
implemented several and different dissemination activities depending
on each target we tried to impact. We have established 4 platforms for
the actions: Webpage, Events, Social Networks and Media.

Is the official site where people can find out the meaning of the Solar
Decathlon, meet the University, the CASA UNAM system and get closer
to our team through images, blog and press information; all in three
languages: Spanish, English and French. (www.dsolar.mx) The average flow is 40 visitors per day from more than 15 countries.

With the aim of increase our reaching communication, we organized
and joined some events like expositions, recreational activities and
specialized forums. The last of them, a news conference on January 30
counted with the presence of at least 30 mass media.

On April 3, we organized the Speed Peer Review meeting in the Salón
Victoria in México City with the sponsorship of our partners of Schneider Electric. This helped to integrate partners and decathletes around
the project and to keep them informed.

We were invited to participate at the cultural fair of the United Nations Model
2013, held by UNAM, were we exposed our stand with the project's models and
posters to the students of 25 different colleges. The general theme for the
model was collaboration.

The offering of Dia de Muetos is a Mexican tradition to recall our dead
ones, throw thousands of elements in an altar like the food, flowers,
photos, smells and tastes, by all the things the dead ones used to like. Our
University takes this tradition into a gorgeous festival of Dia de Muetos, in
this festival there are more than 100 offerings with a minimum of 1.5
meters high. This year we had the opportunity of paying tribute and
represent one of the most important celebrities of painting: Remedios
Varo, by the legend of “Portrait of the DR. Ignacio Chávez”. The festival of
Dia de Muertos received students, teachers, academic workers and public
in general as guests, having a great spreading of the project by celebrating
one of the most important traditions in our country.

CASA’s logo is the result of a long design and research process, where
visual exploration of some basic concepts of the project like the idea
of diversity and symbiosis, became our main conceptual principles.
The outcome is the approach of CASA’s idea: it has a geometric and
abstract construction where magnitude and complexity of the project
are represented.
Given the compact and resilient nature of our logo, it is easily related to
other promotional logos from institutions and sponsors. Besides, it has
the property of being able to become monochrome without losing its
legibility. In general, our logo and visual identity has been used for diverse communication strategies, such as our website and public press.
