The EPD applies to all types of gypsum based plasters. It is described as the declaration of an average product from a manufacturer’s plant. The owner of the declaration shall be liable for the underlying information and evidence. Valid to 17.07.2018 Verification Prof. Dr.-Ing. Horst J. Bossenmayer (President of Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V.) Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans-Wolf Reinhardt (Chairman of SVA) The CEN Norm EN 15804 serves as the core PCR Independent verification of the declaration and data according to ISO 14025 internally x externally Dr. Olivier Muller (Independent tester appointed by SVA) Product Product description Gypsum based plasters are primarily made of stucco (calcium sulphate hemihydrate). The other raw materials used are calcite, expanded perlite, lime, cellulose, retarders, starch, air-entrainers, polymer and plasticizers. Manufacturing starts with the stucco preparation (grinding, calcination and separation), followed by expanded perlite and calcite preparation for production. After receive of the gypsum mineral (CaSO4.2H2O) to the Dalsan’s plant, it is grinded and heated to remove 75% of combined water, resulting in the formation of stucco (calcium sulphate hemihydrate) (CaSO4.½H2O). It is separated depending on the size of powder and is then transferred to the silos for storage. After that, dry powder is mixed with the other raw materials. Finally, the final products are packaged for delivery. Dalsan manufactures various gypsum based construction and industrial plasters to required specifications for different applications. . Reference standards applied are TS EN 13279-1 and TS EN 13279-2. ADERTEK, KARTEK, DERZTEK are packaged in polypropylene laminated bags with an average weight of 30 kg, ALEVTEK and SIVATEK with 35kg. SATENTEK is available in both Kraft bags of 15kg and polypropylene laminated bags of 30 Kg.The main products that are part of this study are: ALÇITEK (Projection Gypsum Plaster), SIVATEK (Manual 2 Plaster with Perlite), SATENTEK (Finishing Plaster), KARTEK (Cornice Plaster), CERACAST (Industrial Plaster), DERZTEK (Jointing Compound) and finally ADERDEK (Bonding Plaster). Application Applications of gypsum based plasters covered under this EPD are shown below: ALÇITEK: It is gypsum-based, ready-to-use spray plaster. It can be directly applied on brick, concrete, aerated-concrete, etc. SIVATEK: It is gypsum based specially formulated ready-to-use bagged plaster that can be applied on directly brick, concrete, aerated-concrete, etc. SATENTEK: With its high adherence, this finishing plaster is used as an undercoat for all types of paintings. SATENTEK can be applied on SIVATEK and ALLEV plasterboard surface. KARTEK: It is used for the production of decorative elements like cornices. CERACAST: It is used in the moulds of sanitary ware and bricks moulds in those industries. DERZTEK: It is used at ALLEV plasterboard joints over joint tapes. ADERTEK: It is used for bonding ALLEV plasterboard, EPS (expanded polystyrene), XPS (extruded polystyrene), mineral wools (glass wool, rock wool) and composite insulation panels over surfaces like brick, concrete, aerated-concrete etc. Environmental Product Declaration Dalsan Gypsum Industry and Trade Inc. – Gypsum based construction and industrial plasters Technical Data Technical data for Dalsan Plasters are shown below: Constructional data Name Value Compressive strength Adhesive shear strength Thermal conductivity Tensile bond strength Flexural strength Bulk density Dry density Resistance to fire Water absorption Unit 2 - 10 N/mm2 >0.06 N/mm2 0.39 - 0.43 W/(mK) 0.1 - 0.25 N/mm2 1 - 4.5 N/mm2 700-850 kg/m3 950-1250 kg/m3 Non A1 combustibl e < 36 % Base materials / Ancillary materials Gypsum based mineral plasters are made of raw materials such as stucco (calcium sulphate hemihydrate), calcite, expanded perlite, lime, cellulose, retarders, starch, air entraining agents, polymer and plasticizer. There are no products that can be included in “Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern for Authorisation”. However, there are some chemicals that are part of the EU REACH regulation and registered: calcium sulphate (01-2119444318-260199), citric acid (05-2118519120-59-0000), calcium di-hydroxide (05-2118519278-36-0000). Gypsum based plasters have a long life and can be recycled or disposed of designated landfill sites at the end of their useful life. Reference service life This EPD is relevant to cradle to factory gate as well as disposal of product after use. Therefore no reference to useful life is required. LCA: Calculation rules Declared Unit The declared unit is 1 kg gypsum based plasters in line with the PCR document for mineral factory-made mortar. The process flow diagram is depicted below: Declared unit Name Declared unit Gross density Conversion factor to 1 kg Value Unit 1 1063 0.00094 kg kg/m3 - System boundary This is a cradle to gate EPD including disposal of product after use. System boundary for the Life Cycle Assessment involves raw materials (A1), transport (A2) manufacturing (A3) and disposal (C4). ‘Raw materials stage’ includes extraction and processing raw materials. ‘Manufacturing stage’ starts with further processing some raw materials needed for the production, mixing all raw materials and packaging the final product. ‘Transport stage’ is only relevant for delivery of all raw materials to the plant and forklift usage within the factory. Concerning the end of life, all gypsum based plasters end up at landfill as their final fate. The benefit from recycling and reuse is not relevant for this LCA work. In addition, all waste coming from the production processes and service areas is managed in accordance with valid legal requirements. There is no wastewater from the process. However, there is wastewater arising from general use within the factory, which is very small and treated in two biological wastewater treatment plants. The treated water is used in irrigation of gardens. 3 Cut-off criteria Where there are no data available, raw materials that are a minor constituent of the product amounting less than 1% of total raw materials are excluded in this study. Comparability Basically, a comparison or an evaluation of EPD data is only possible if all the data sets to be compared were created according to EN 15804 and the building context, respectively the product-specific characteristics of performance, are taken into account. This EPD is comparable with gypsum based plasters that comply with the PCR document Part B: Mineral factory-made mortar and are evaluated according to EN 15804 norms. Environmental Product Declaration Dalsan Gypsum Industry and Trade Inc. – Gypsum based construction and industrial plasters LCA: Scenarios and additional technical information The impact indicators were performed according to LCA standard (ISO 14040/44) using SimaPro software with ecoinvent (v: 2.2) database. Reuse- Recovery-and Recycling potential (D) All gypsum based plasters end up at construction and demolition waste landfills. However, no possible benefits of recycling and reuse were taken into account in the LCA work here. GREENGUARD Certification Some of the products covered by this EPD have also been awarded GREENGUARD certification. It is awarded to products that protect human health and quality of life by improving indoor air quality and reducing chemical exposure when they are in use. The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has awarded GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification® and GREENGUARD Children & SchoolsSM Certification to the following gypsum based mineral plasters: ALÇITEK, SIVATEK and SATENTEK. 4 Environmental Product Declaration Dalsan Gypsum Industry and Trade Inc. – Gypsum based construction and industrial plasters LCA: Results The results of the LCA with the indicators as per EPD requirement are given in the following tables for product manufacture (A1, A2, A3) and the loads beyond the system boundaries (C4).
