Log on to www.aam.org.my for the full 44-page edition of DRIVE. from the chairman Driving with bald or faulty tyres increases the risk of one being involved in an accident due to insufficient levels of grip that impacts the intended performance of tyres Road safety is a very broad subject and therefore increasing awareness involves educating motorists on their contribution towards making our roads safer for all road users. The recent announcement making it illegal for motorists to fit regrooved tyres to their vehicles from November 1, 2009 onwards is yet another initiative by the relevant authorities to reduce Malaysia’s alarming number of road accidents. It has been reported that an average of 18 people die on Malaysian roads daily, with many more seriously injured. Like the law requiring rear passengers to fasten their seatbelts, motorists must not only adhere to but more importantly, fully understand and appreciate the rationale behind outlawing regrooved tyres. In Malaysia, regrooved tyres are commonly used by both private motor vehicle owners and fleet operators. The biggest advantage of course is that regrooved tyres more often than not present itself as a cheaper alternative. Similarly, there is also a growing trend for second hand or used tyres. Regrooved tyres result from the practice of carving out the rubber in the grooves of a tyre or cutting into the tread of a worn tyre to a depth equal to or deeper than the molded original groove depth to create additional tread depth. What this essentially means is that a tyre that is at the end of its life, therefore no longer making it safe for use as originally intended by its manufacturer, continues to find its way on to the road in other vehicles after it has been discarded. Today’s tyres also come with what is known as tread wear indictors, and these indicators tell you when your vehicle’s tyres are due for change. As the tyres wear our, the level of grip your vehicle has on the road also drop significantly. On average, tyres are replaced every 40,000 km. Tyres however, must be replaced once the tread depth is below the permitted safety level regardless of the mileage traveled. In countries like the United Kingdom for example, the law requires a minimum thread depth of 1.6mm in the main grooves of a tyre. The use of regrooved tyres are also prohibited in many other countries and restricted to certain activities, and for a good reason. What motorists must understand and accept is that fact that tyres are probably the most important component of one’s vehicle because it is your only contact with the road surface. Driving with bald or faulty tyres increases the risk of one being involved in an accident due to insufficient levels of grip that impacts the intended performance of tyres. Remind ourselves that driving or riding a motorcycle is not a right, but a huge responsibility. On other matters, I would also like to announce that from the next issue, Drive will strictly be made available to members only online via our website www.aam.org.my. The decision to move from print to online is in line with the Association’s commitment towards going green and in prioritising spending in core areas designed to enhance on AAM’s existing services to our members. Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to wish every a Selamat Hari Raya Aidifitri and remember to always make safety your number one priority on the road. From November 1, 2009 onwards, only DOT and MS Approved Tyres Only will be allowed on the road. Regrooved tyres will be illegal and motorists caught using them risk being fined RM300. In related news, an average of 18 people die on Malaysian roads daily, with many more seriously injured, it was revealed recently by the Transport Ministry. In statistics released it was revealed that in 2008, 6,527 people died as a result of road accidents. AAM’S DRIVE MAGAZINE GOES ONLINE In a concerted effort to Go Green, tighten operational costs and focus on enhancing our core business and services to members, the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) will shift its entire DRIVE magazine from print to online effective immediately. Instead of 22 printed pages, DRIVE will be offered as a 44page full colour online bi-monthly magazine that can be downloaded at our member’s convenience on the AAM website at www.aam.org.my Highlights of the magazine will alert members of every new issue that is published when they visit the AAM website. We assure you that content will not be compromised and that we will strive to provide members with an even elaborate range of reading materials. Ceasing to print is AAM’s small contribution to a more environmentallyfriendly world but above all, will allow us to reinvest into enhancing the services that we currently offer to our members and in providing a wider range of benefits and privileges. It is also in tandem with AAM’s support of the Make Cars Green campaign, an international environmental effort, initiated by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) aimed at reducing the impact of motoring on our planet. Make Cars Green outlines how policy makers, industry and consumers can all play a constructive role in the future. It brings together all aspects of the FIA’s work from encouraging consumers to go green, to representing our members’ ecological concerns towards government and manufacturers, and the introduction of environmental initiatives into motor sport. The campaign is aimed at encouraging a radical rethink in the way cars are considered in society by being at the forefront of encouraging considerate and ecologically sound mobility. As a responsible motorist, we invite you to help preserve the environment just by making slight changes to your driving style and adopting a few simple and basic rules. #5 w Vol 24 Oct Sept/ 009 12/2 314/ w PP ION CIAT SSO ILE A MOB UTO AN A 8) 2107 (0 AM) IA (A AYS AL OF M 3.00 w RM TION LICA PUB OUR US Y P SMS BERSHI M ME ETAILS D Y! The commissioning of 11 new car carriers and the installation of global positioning systems (GPS) in all its field vehicles are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency and speed of its services to AAM’s 234,889 members. GPS will enable the call centre to identify the nearest vehicle to respond to emergency and road assistance calls. These initiatives complement AAM’s efforts to extend greater value added services to members that currently include 24-hour breakdown assistance, on-the-spot minor repairs, car battery delivery, motor vehicle insurance, vehicle inspection and valuation, and an Accident Care Programme. AAM is also scheduled to open it’s a Collision Repair Centre in the Klang Valley before the end of the year. “We see the current situation as an opportune time to invest to strengthen our core business of providing breakdown and road assistance services. At the same time, the Association has and continues to take the necessary steps to trim operational costs in areas that would not compromise on our services to members,” said AAM Chairman Yang Mulia Tunku Mudzaffar Tunku Mustapha. For the financial year 2007/2008 AAM responded to a total of 92,029 roadside assistance cases nationwide. The Association currently operates 20 branches nationwide. On average, each of AAM’s technical assistance vehicle clocks between 100 and 200km per shift, registering between 7,000 and 9,000km per month. On average, its KL Main office receives between 200 and 400 calls for assistance on a daily basis. The branch has some 95 mechanics and tow-truck drivers who work around the clock in three shifts, patrolling the city on motorcycles, in vans and tow-trucks. For the 2007/2008 financial year 2,722 vehicles were also inspected and evaluated by AAM. Tunku Mudzaffar said membership recruitment is also being intensified and in an unprecedented move, the association recently introduced a special “use and pay” membership programme specifically for young drivers. The AAM A1 Team Malaysia Unicard entitles those between the ages of 18 and 23 to a free membership and subsidized charges only when they require service. Targeting young drivers is a twoprong approach. The first enables AAM to reach out to the growing population of younger generation of car owners and drivers, while the second involves imparting greater road safety awareness and values to the young driver community news THIS ARTICLE ARE PROVIDED BY AUTO TOUCH As a consumer, we are often reminded by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to become a smart individual especially when it involves choosing products that are of quality and value for money. Like the price and quality of household goods, we must also carefully choose the spare parts and components that we buy for our vehicles as the competitive market offers both genuine and immitation components. rely only on in the market that may not be manufactured to such high standards and therefore, the risk of such components malfunctioning and damaging a vehicle is much higher. In Malaysia, investigtaions revealed that several accidents have been attributed to the use of immitation spares parts and components. Take a timing belt for example. Based on the experience of some consumers, an immitation timing belt although cheaper, is more prone to snapping and at times have snapped much earlier than the recommended interval change. Imagine if the timing belt were to snap when a vehicle is being driven at high speed. This would undoubtedly cause serious damage to the vehicle and more importantly, COMPONENTS Price has been instrumental in influencing many consumers to choosing immitation or non-original components and spare parts over original components as it is often priced cheaper. In general, car manufacturers and distributors always advise vehicle owners to use only original spare parts and components, irrespective if they had purchased a brand new or second hand vehicle. This is to not only ensure their safety but to enable the vehicle to perform as it has been intended. Original components are subjected to periodic testing by both car manufacturers, distributors and the relevant authorities such as SIRIM, to ensure that these components are manufactured to the prescribed standards and quality. These tests are also conducted to deliberately look for flaws in the components, in which case if any is found, can be easily traced back to the component manufacturer. What is important to note is that there are plenty of spares parts and components increases the risk of an accident. Similarly, consumers are also advised to be careful when purchasing second hand spare parts and components as this may also be risky. These parts commonly originate from vehicles that have been scrapped or discarded and therefore such components may be aged and no longer suitable for use. Some compenents may also be unsuitable for Malaysian road conditions. In view of this, consumers are advised to use only original spare parts and components because although the price may be a little expensive, it is assured of its quality. The rationale for such high prices is because these components are manufactured according to prescribed standards and are guaranteed by its manufacturer. The best is to always consult the authorised service centre, the vehicle manufacturer or an authorised workshop before changing any components in your vehicle. This is for your own safety and the performance of the vehicle. Safety should always be your priority. news HONDA UNVEILS TAFFETA WHITE colour for the 8th generation civic The award-winning model has captivated more than 30,000 fans in Malaysia Petaling Jaya, 19 October 2009 – Honda Malaysia Sdn. If you are unsure, check with the respective car manufacturers to ascertain your vehicle’s adaptability to RON 95. From September 2009, most fuel companies would have already started offering RON 95 as standard unleaded fuel that replaces RON 92. RON 95 will sell alongside RON 97 at the pumps, with both fuels priced RM1.75 per litre and RM2 per litre respectively. The move to offer higher octane fuel as the standard pump fuel is in view of most vehicle engines being compatible with it, as well as in line with global acceptance of RON 95 as the standard unleaded fuel. In addition, the introduction of RON 95 will also reduce the Government’s yearly subsidy on fuel. In many parts of Europe, RON 95 is the minimum available standard, with RON 97/98 being offered as Super Unleaded. In the United Kingdom, ‘regular’ petrol has an octane rating of RON 95, with RON 97 fuel being widely available as the Super Unleaded. the standard unleaded fuel at all petrol stations today What is RON? RON stands for Research Octane Number. Octane number or octane rating refers to the fuel’s ability to withstand auto ignition (knocking) inside the engine. Higher octane number refers to higher ability of the fuel to fight auto ignition. In other words, it means that RON95 is harder to ignite compared to RON92. Is RON 95 fuel unleaded? Yes What is engine knocking? Knocking is abnormal combustion when fuel combusts prematurely before ignition. This basically means the fuel is detonating instead of burning smoothly. It can damage the engine. Knocking also reduces the performance of a vehicle. Why are there different types of RON? Different vehicles are designed to be used with fuel with different octane number. Higher octane fuel is primarily designed for high performance vehicles like sports cars and racing cars. What is the minimum RON for my car? This is normally specified by the vehicle manufacturer. The information can be found in the vehicle owner’s manual or behind the fuel lid. In the absence of such information, you are advised to contact the nearest authorized sales or service centre. How will I know if I am using the right RON? First refer to the vehicle owner’s manual. Second, listen to the engine to detect if it is knocking. What type of vehicles can use RON 95? Most vehicles are able to use RON95. In the event you are unsure, you are advised to refer to the vehicle owner’s manual or contact the nearest authorized sales or service centre. tips 11 Can I mix RON 95 with RON 97? So long as the fuel meets or exceeds the minimum RON required by the engine as specified by the vehicle manufacturer, mixing is fine and should not damage your engine. Will my vehicle run better with RON 97 instead of RON 95? If your vehicle’s engine runs well and there is no indication of knocking when using the lower octane fuel, then there is no advantage switching to a higher octane. Will running on RON 97 instead of RON 95 give my vehicle more Can I run on RON 95 if my car engine has been designed to run with RON 97? Running an engine on a lower RON than recommended/specified by the vehicle manufacturer can lead to engine damage power? This is a common misconception. If your car has been designed to use RON 95, switching to a higher octane fuel does not enable the engine to produce more power. If my vehicle has been designed to run on RON 95, can I then fill up with RON 97? Higher RON does not harm car engines even if the engines were designed for lower RON fuels. DYNO TAB BOOST FOR RON 95 Since it was first introduced by Chemplex Automotive Group Inc. in mid 1990, DYNO-TAB fuel additives have been used to improve and add value to millions of litres of petrol and diesel fuel worldwide. DYNO TAB functions to raise the quality of fuel given the fact that most Asian countries use a lower grade of fuel. DYNO-TAB works by increasing the octane level of fuel, cleaning the fuel injectors and thus producing fuel savings of up to 15%. This in turn improves on the vehicle’s power and performance, and significantly minimises carbon deposits, harmful emissions and black smoke. Increasing the octane level of fuel is expected to become even more popular with Malaysia introducing RON 95 at the pumps. Measuring the size of a fingerprint, the fast dissolving and award-winning DYNO-TAB Fuel Tablet, works by simply being dropped into the fuel tank. Contrary to conventional standard liquid fuel additives that are sold in bottles, the tablet is made out of 100% active ingredients, specifically designed to improve fuel, and therefore the performance of your car. DYNO-TAB uses only 100% active ingredients, combining several different ingredients to give a total all round additive package to provide immediate and noticeable improved power, performance and fuel saving. DYNO-TAB’s wide product range includes the : DYNO-TAB Fuel Saver, DYNO-TAB Injector Cleaner, DYNOTAB Octane Power Booster, DYNOTAB Fuel Stabilizer and DYNO-TAB Diesel Treatment. Another new product recently introduced is the DYNO-TAB Windscreen Washer tablet, a 100% biodegradable product. With four small children and my cars generally a toss up between a coupe and an old wreck, you can just imagine how excited the kids were when daddy brought home the all-new Renault Espace to test drive for the weekend. Within minutes, they were all over the Espace. And while space is definitely a prerequisite with children, what they really look forward to is a sunroof. This is where the Espace’s panoramic glass roof (which is also the largest in the market measuring 2.16 square metres) certainly took their breath away. And with its four-position electric sunblind that will shield you from the afternoon hear, simply mesmerizing. Had I been able to afford such a car (RM289,000), I would have gladly succumbed to temptation just to see the gleam on their faces. Somehow I don’t remember them being this ecstatic or saying anything out of the ordinary when I drove home the Renault Clio RS the previous week. EXTERIOR STYLING Simplicity is said to have guided the designers and if indeed this were true then the Espace certainly models it well. The vehicle’s exterior styling with its fluid lines combined with its generous glass surface area just exudes in sophistication, luxury and style. The modern interpretation of the Espace somewhat retains the silhouette of the original Espace – the overall presence is greatly similar even after several generations – but evolved enough and more importantly in the right areas to blend originality and distinct character car review 13 The centre second row seat can also be folded into with timeless good looks. If there was anything to pick on, I would have preferred sliding doors for the rear. BASKING IN LUXURY Japanese MPVs have certainly come a very long way in terms of styling but there’s just something about continentals being that wee bit better, from the choice of interior colours, type of materials used, the texture of the materials, refinement and elegance. With the all-new Espace, you will notice that it has a clean dashboard where by all the necessary instrumentation has been reduced to driver side door panel and steering wheel. The centre merely displays the instrument cluster, and everything you need to know from speed, gear selection, rpm, and other mechanical essentials are digitally displayed. The flick of a switch on the steering wheel allows you to accurately gauge anything from distance to empty to distance traveled, and operate the cruise control. An innovative air-conditioning system in the Espace sees 14 air outlets spread throughout the passenger compartment for uniformed temperatures that is calculated automatically by the humidity, sunlight, pollution and speed sensors. The driver’s side climate control allows for heating and ventilation control with electronic adjustment of temperature and air flow while the front passenger side allows for the choice of temperature. The Espace is also fitted with rear climate control which displays and adjusts the air flow on both sides. Extra tinted rear windows for greater shade, comfort and privacy, lateral sunshades incorporated into the rear doors, rear side panel and rear window, In essence, if being in a the top of the line non-european mpv is equated to traveling first class, then the Espace would be likened to relaxing on board your very own corporate jet. SPACIOUSNESS AND VERSATILITY Versatility of the Espace is an offering that is probably unmatched by any other seven-seater mpv in the market. The seats are designed with a slide and lock system allowing the vehicle to operate as a seven-seater or a twoseater in case you intend to maximize the storage capacity. The centre second row seat can also be folded into a table to accommodate lounge seating for four people at the rear. With none of the seats removed, luggage volume is 456 litres but with the second and third row of seats removed, the Espace offers a staggering 3050 litres of space. The driver and front passenger are meanwhile, spoiled with the captain’s chair offering full lumbar adjustments. In terms of storage areas, there is a side glovebox storage, driver and front passenger dashboard storage, map pocket on the back of the front seats, cup holders in the centre console, table and cup holder for the rear passengers, cd storage in the rear, and open pockets in the front and rear door panel inserts. a table to accommodate lounge seating for four people at the rear. SAFETY IS PRIORITY You can only expect the best from the Espace given the fact that it scored a maximum five-star EuroNCAP crash test rating. It’s pretty obvious that the French manufacturer took all safety parameters into consideration from the early stages of design. The Espace is engineered with a reinforced body structure which is not only capable of absorbing greater energy 14 car review The automatic handbrake that is activated as soon as the ignition is turned off and released again when the driver accelerates in the event of an impact but distorts to absorb impact. The high seating position for example, allows the driver to anticipate and reduce risks in whatever road conditions. There are also close contact front head restraints. It has rain sensors that automatically activates the windscreen wipers and sensors that detect poor lighting conditions and automatically switches on the headlights. The headlights also remain illuminated for two minutes after you leave the vehicle to guide you in the dark. Then there’s the automatic handbrake that is activated as soon as the ignition is turned off and released again when the driver accelerates. The handbrake can also be operated manually for instance when stopped at a slope. Equipped with ventilated disc brakes at the front and disc brakes at the rear, the Espace also comes standard with anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist (EBD), and electronic stability programme (ESP) with traction control and understeer control. There are also six airbags and threepoint pre-tensioners and load limiters. The driver and front passenger airbags are built with a two-stage auto adaptive system meaning the system assesses the severity of an impact and deploys the small or large volume air bag accordingly. Also standard in the Espace are ISOFIX child seat mounting points in the rear seats, a rear parking proximity sensor, and electrochrome rear view mirror to cut the glare from vehicle headlights behind you. There are also child safety locks on the doors and windows. In terms of security, the Espace locks, unlocks and is stared via a Renault Key Card. Once inside you simply slip the card into a dedicated slot, press the start button and you’re off. PERFORMANCE I admit I was rather skeptical at first of the two-litre turbocharged engine especially for a car as big and as heavy as the Espace. Let’s just say that I was pleasantly surprised by the ever so willing and effortless go of the Espace. It might weigh in at an enormous 2600kg but the Espace has good power on tap with 270Nm of torque at 3250rpm and 170 brake horse power at 5000rpm. Even with a full board of passengers, it was as lively and agile as an athlete. Whether it involved city driving, on the highway, or in stop and go situations, never once did the Espace felt sluggish or as if having to drag itself. And while I would never encourage anyone to drive beyond the national speed limits – especially in an mpv – the Espace is rated at a top speed of 197km/h. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Engine: 1998cc turbocharged Maximum output: 170bhp at 5000rpm Maximum torque: 270Nm at 3250rpm 0-100km/h: 10.6 seconds Top speed: 197km/h Transmission: pro-active automatic, five-speed with manual selection Fuel tank capacity: 83 litres Wheelbase: 2868mm Overall length: 4856mm Overall width: 2104mm Height: 1746mm Weight: 2600kg Luggage volume: 456 litres (no seats removed), 3050 litres (rear seats removed) Brakes: servo assisted with ventilated disc brakes at the front and disc brakes at the rear Safety: anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist (EBD), electronic stability programme (ESP) with traction control and understeer control Front suspension: MacPherson type with coil springs Rear suspension: semi-rigid profile guided by 2 longitudinal arms with “Panhard” type bar Colours: Mountain blue, Hessian, Mercury and Pearl Black x! Staying safe depends on both drivers and school children, and an in depth understanding and appreciation road safety awareness. At the end of the day, it is not a question of the child not looking when he/she crossed the road, whether he/she should have taken the pedestrian bridge, or if the driver was speeding in a school zone, but more importantly how such unfortunate incidents can be completely avoided. • Drive slowly. Never drive at high speeds when approaching schools. • Stay alert especially when your view or field of vision is blocked by parked buses vehicles and obstructing objects • Both drivers and school children must obey the instructions of the traffic warden at the school. In the absence of a traffic warden obey the rules when coming to a pedestrian crossing and traffic lights. • Never jump/beat the traffic lights near a school. • Be vigilant – some school children tend to cross the road without looking. Others may also jaywalk although there is a pedestrian bridge nearby. If there is a pedestrian bridge, teach your child and insist that he/she cross safely using the bridge. • When passing a parked school bus be aware that children may be boarding or alighting from the vehicle. Some may also be crossing the road in front of the bus and hidden from your view. • Give way to school buses • Be careful of children waiting or gathering by the side of the road. As far as possible, you should advise your own children not to play by the side of the road as they may become distracted and stray onto the road. • Be careful of children stopped in the middle of the road waiting to cross. When possible and safe to do so, stop, give way and allow them to cross safely. • When sending your children to school, make sure they alight from the vehicle from the door that is closest to the pavement. Do not allow them to alight using the door next to incoming traffic as this is dangerous. • Teach your children that they should always look right and left before crossing the road. Younger children should always be accompanied when crossing the road. • When picking up your child from school, never leave your other children in the parked vehicle unattended to with the engine running. • Always use your vehicle indicators and signal your intention to stop to the vehicles behind you. Stopping abruptly to pick up your child from school can be dangerous. • Children should always be taught and reminded to board or alight from the vehicle/school bus only when it comes to a complete stop. tips 19 GANGGUAN PEMANDUAN sistem audio Memiliki sistem audio yang canggih, hebat, moden serta mampu mengeluarkan bunyian yang menggegarkan adalah impian bagi kebanyakan pemilik kereta zaman kini terutama sekali bagi golongan muda yang gemar mengubahsuai kenderaan mereka. 20 tips in-car HAZARDS Worldwide crash investigations have revealed that even small things left unsecured in your car can turn into life threatening projectiles. In the United States for example, a one-year-old child traveling in the family car was hit in the head by a mobile phone that cracked his skull, requiring 10 days in intensive care. In South Australia, two children were crushed by unsecured computer equipment in the back of a station wagon. A British couple was also reported to have been killed not as a result of the car collision, but from unsecured suitcases hurtling forward and crushing them to death. In the case of incar projectiles, the greater the speed, the greater the impact. • Always make sure you and your occupants have the seat belts fastened. • Remove all items tips 21 (pillows, cushions, hats, etc) from the vehicle’s rear parcel shelf as it obstructs visibility • Remove all loose items from the car or secure them safely in the trunk/boot. Loose items in the car can be turned into dangerous missiles and hit the occupants in the event of an emergency brake • Do not keep items like used plastic bottles or spare shoes under the driver seat as in the event of an emergency, these items may be thrown forward and become dislodged under the pedals • Keep your eyes on the road and do not be distracted by changing the cd or tuning to your favourite radio station • Avoid eating or drinking in the car. You may become distracted if the drink suddenly spills. • Constantly look at/scan the instrument cluster to ensure that the traction control has not been accidentally turned off by your child. • You are advised against trying to adjust your seat when the car is moving. • Make sure children do not have their hands anywhere near the vehicle handbrake or the steering when the vehicle is being driven • Having a dark tint on the vehicle may protect you from the hot sun and UV rays but make sure it does not impair visibility at night • When stationary and with the engine running, always engage the handbrake for extra safety • If you have pets in the car while driving, they need to be secured too. Common items that can become potentially dangerous inside a vehicle: • Handbags and briefcases • Laptops • Mobile phones • Pets • Umbrellas, tissue boxes • First aid kits • Shopping bags • Suitcases and luggage • Groceries • Children’s toys • Photographic/make-up boxes • Golf clubs and tennis racquets • Fire extinguishers • Tools 22 car review i10 continental korean – the hyundai It’s fresh, it’s stylish, it’s affordable and it above all, breaks the monotony of having to drive a national car. I’m patriotic but I am also a car enthusiast. In “car land” unfortunately, I refuse to allow patriotism to get in the way of better offerings. Therefore, in the bandwagon of “cheap” and affordable introductory-level vehicles that is more often than not dominated by models offered by the two national car companies, it is refreshing at times to see more and more non-national players beginning to entice car buyers with much desired variety. As more Malaysians grow affluent, and in the advent and availability of attractive and sometimes unbelievable financing schemes, some car buyers I believe don’t mind paying extra – no thanks to the various taxes and duties imposed on non-national cars - to break away from the ownership of a national car. The Hyundai i10 is one of the latest examples to make a pitch for this exclusive market and while it is a small little car intended as an introductory level city vehicle, it certainly has a very big heart. EXTERIOR STYLING If my first impression of the i10 was that By Harris Iskandar Taib it has the strong resemblance of a Fiat, then the designers have succeeded and convincingly taken Hyundai European as far design and styling is concerned. European flavour is derived from the distinctive black bumper inserts and side body mouldings, the overall aerodynamic silhouette of the i10, wedge type door design that accentuates the i10’s side profile, larger front bumper air intake, and what I would say is a very pronounced rear end. Cute perhaps, but the description of the i10 that does come to mind is that it has that strong “go-getter” appeal and persona. INTERIOR STYLING The i10 makes plenty of effort to look European and I certainly don’t mind putting my neck on the line by saying it has one of the most stylish dashboards in its segment. If anything Hyundai made the effort. The emphasis on styling resulted in a larger and curvaceous dashboard, a dash-mounted gear lever, large circular air-conditioning vents, a three dial type meter cluster and a built-in double DIN car review 23 audio system with self seeking broadcast channel where you no longer need to retune the radio when driving across states. The centre of the dashboard and the instrumentation also blends in well with the overall simplistic yet stylish theme. SAFETY The i10 is built with a reinforced body structure incorporating high-tensile steel. It also scores a four-star rating in the EuroNCAP New Car Assessment Program for frontal crash and side impact making it the best in the mini segment. This was achieved with rigid subframes, floor and bulkhead reinforcements and reinforced B and C pillars hoop structures. The front end of the car features crumple shock absorbing zones, while the rear and the double side impact beams and bars on all doors provide extra protection for occupants. For a one-litre, the i10 is equipped with quite a good package of safety items, from an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic brake force distribution (EBD) to dual airbags and front seat is also a battery saver the prevents the battery from bcoming flat in the event you accidentally leave the headlights on after removing the ignition key. PERFORMANCE It’s a 1.1-litre therefore agility and engine response is far more important compared to outright performance. With a maximum power of 49.1kw at 5500rpm and a maximum torque of 99.1Nm at 2800rpm, it’s not lagging as the practical and economical city car it was intended to be. In fact, I appreciated the i10 as an easy and more importantly comfortable drive. The i10 is available as a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. It is also fitted with a motor driven power steering for precision and economy. The third brake light meanwhile, has been incorporated into the rear roof spoiler for enhanced visibility. Other safety considerations built into the car include the high sitting position for the driver that increases visibility, high mounted and large rear combination lamps again for higher visibility, and multi-faceted reflector type headlights for higher efficiency and visual impact. For security, the car is also fitted with an anti-carjacking central locking system which locks the doors automatically as soon as the brake pedal is depressed. The worldwide campaign was initially launched in the United States on October 7, and will appear mainly on television, in the print media and on the Web. It will be gradually deployed in 55 countries – in Europe and Asia by early 2010, followed by Africa, the Middle East, India and South America. Anticipation is the key word here. It is not the question of knowing precisely what the other driver or motorist will do but recognising a potentially dangerous situation and taking all necessary precautions to avoid it in the event the situation arises. Perhaps the most common threatening situation drivers come across on a daily basis is when the vehicle in front comes to an abrupt stop along the road or suddenly turns without signaling his intentions using the indicators much earlier. Anticipation in this case means you are first driving behind at a safe distance and speed (not tailgating), able to see/sense that the vehicle in front of you may be slowing down or that the driver is slowly inching to the side or the middle of the road indicating the possibility that he either intends to stop or turn. While the driver in front may be at fault, Defensive Driving allows you to avoid having the situation escalate tips 29 into an accident. A driver who practices Defensive Driving is always alert and careful. He/she knows and abides by the traffic regulations, has a right attitude towards driving and has mutual respect for other road users. Defensive Driving goes beyond thinking of your own safety but it also considers the safety of your passengers and your fellow commuters. A classic example of this would be when a vehicle overtakes you and tries to squeeze to rejoin the lane in front of you to avoid oncoming traffic. Anticipating that the driver may do this prepares you to react. With enough driving experience and practice (there are also safety, defensive and advance driving classes offered), a driver can quickly identify and predict potential road hazards and then immediately react to diffuse any dangerous situations. Remember that you cannot control the actions of other drivers but how you do drive can steer you out of dangers caused by other people’s bad driving. • Slow down especially when it rains, at night, or when visibility becomes poor • Avoid following the vehicle in front of you too closely. Use the three-second rule for a safe following distance. Make sure you concentrate on your driving and do not become distracted at the wheel • Check your side and rear view mirrors frequently • Be alert of your surroundings and constantly check on your field of vision • Never assume that other motorists will automatically stop for a red light, a junction or stop sign. Give it a good second or two before you set off. • When there are pedestrians on the side or middle of the road attempting to cross, slow down and be prepared to brake to stop or avoid in the event they make a sudden dash across the road. • When making a turn at a roundabout, be prepared to take avoiding action if the other driver doesn’t stop or is not appearing to slow down. • It is not enough to look at the car in front of you. You must look well ahead down the road to be able to avoid accidents. • Avoid contesting who has the right of way or try to cut off another motorist when merging into traffic. Be courteous of other road users. • If the oncoming vehicle from the opposite side has deliberate or unintentionally strayed into your lane, yield and move to the left to avoid what can potentially become a dangerous head-on collision. • Always use your vehicle indicators • Defensive Driving doesn’t mean you drive aggressively. Be patient, always practice mutual respect on the road, exercise restraint and concentrate on your driving. 30 motorsport PETRONAS SYNTIUM TEAM TRIUMPHANT at 10th MME with 1-2 finish The 10th edition of the Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) race in August proved a triumphant one for the PETRONAS Syntium Team with the team’s six drivers in the two BMW Z4M Coupes completing the gruelling 12-hour race with a memorable and exciting 1-2 finish. Consistent driving and an incident-filled race promoted the two cars to the top of the field and by the second hour of the race, seasoned campaigner Taniguchi inherited the lead ahead of teammate Orido. As the race progressed in the hot and sunny conditions, both cars were able to maintain their 1-2 position with the lead changing hands between them several times. By the seventh hour and the 200th lap, the race had entered the night stage with the number 15 car strongly in the lead ahead of the number 28 car. Drama would however, unfold as the race entered its final hour. On Lap 288, the leading number 15 car then piloted by Yanagida was involved in a collision which forced him off track. The Japanese kept the engine running and was able to return to the track as he nursed the It was not just a fantastic race for us but also a milestone! stricken BMW back to the pits. That incident put the car almost a lap down and after successfully fixing a damaged rear tyre, Yanagida rejoined the race in second position with a deficit of over a minute. “This was our third attempt with the BMW Z4M Coupe at the MME and after all the disappointment of the past two attempts, I have to say that we have come a really long way to get this far and to get a 1-2 result here is simply fantastic!,” said PETRONAS Syntium Team Principal David Wong. “The entire team, from the mechanics, pit crew and engineers, did a truly magnificent job! Everything paid off, the planning, co-ordination and strategy was perfect and this was a brilliant result for the hard work and long hours everyone put into this campaign!” 32 motorsport A1 TEAM MALAYSIA A1 Team Malaysia was voted as the Most Improved Team in an award that decided by A1GP fans worldwide. Jaafar travelled to Modena, Italy with the team’s race engineer, Alan Mugglestone, to experience driving the 600bhp Powered by Ferrari car, within a virtual world. The simulator is used by A1GP drivers as a development tool throughout the year. It is a cost-effective training vehicle for young rookie drivers as well as providing the main A1GP drivers the chance to fast track their development programmes for each race venue. A1 Team Malaysia had used the simulator last season, preparing for race weekends with Fairuz Fauzy and increasing Aaron Lim’s knowledge of the tracks and the car. The 16-year-old Jazeman is currently competing in the European Formula BMW championship. From the seat of his simulator, Jazeman was given the rare opportunity to drive on the Portugese circuit of Algarve. “The car was very different to the ones I’ve driven so far in my career and very similar to the real thing, with the sensitivity of the throttle and brakes and the oversteer. The track was very realistic as well,” said Jazeman. “I definitely learned from this For further information, pls log on www.aam.org.my AAM UNICARD MEMBERS ONLY MPH l RM 5 off normal sign up fee for a 2-year MPH Readers’ Circle (MRC) Membership l RM 5 off normal sign up fee for a 2-year MPH Kidz Club (MKC) Membership l Normal sign up fee for 2-year MRC & MKC Membership is RM20 FREE ROOM OFFER 1-Year Home Club Membership for all AAM members FOR AAM MEMBER “validity date from Home Club benefits and privileges: 1st Sept to 31st Up to 30% discount on a large selection of items, all year round Dec 2009.
