The primary mission

,
of the Count Basie Theatre is to
serve the people of the state of New Jersey
by providing a broad spectrum of quality
entertainment and education programs
that reflect and celebrate the diversity
of the region; foster understanding and
appreciation for the ennobling power
of the performing arts; and create
opportunity for cultural enrichment
for people at all economic levels.
It also is our mission to develop and
maintain a world-class venue that
enhances the enjoyment of these
entertainment and education programs;
contributes to the cultural and
economic vitality of the community and
the region; and honors the
memory of Count Basie.
What a difference a year can make. When writing this letter last year,
we were poised to start our most daunting and aggressive renovation
work to date. Following years of neglect and patchwork repairs intended
to help us get by, we closed the theatre for four months for a complete
renovation of the auditorium and lobbies, and creation of a true patrons’
lounge. We are happy to report that with the hard work and donations
of many that task was completed on schedule and within our budget.
We reopened on October 25th and on November 8th we welcomed
our honorary fundraising chairman Tony Bennett back for a gala
concert to celebrate our reopening. That night and many that have
followed have been tremendous successes.
Even with the theatre closed for four months, attendance for our
shortened year exceeded 151,000 and eclipsed the annual attendance
in all of 2003/2004, just five years ago. We continue to work to fulfill
our mission as a non-profit corporation, offering diverse and enriching
entertainment and continuing to expand our Count’s Cool School
programs. In this fiscal year, the Count Basie Theatre presented 63
performances ranging from Idina Menzel, to Martin Short (our Spring
Gala artist); from the Broadway National Tour of Movin’ Out to
Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett. In addition, the Theatre was rented
for an additional 51 performances. We are proud to continue to be the
home for many local cultural programs, including Phoenix Productions,
the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra, the Monmouth Civic Chorus
and the Company of Dance Arts, to name a few.
This has also been an important year for the Count Basie Theatre
Foundation, our independent fundraising corporation. The Foundation
is responsible for raising money to cover our operating costs (ticket
sales only cover half), continue renovation, and create an endowment.
As part of our renovation work, we dedicated space in the storefronts
adjacent to the box office and created the Carlton Lounge (we gave it the
Theatre’s original name). The Carlton serves our growing list of Count
Basie Theatre Members. The Foundation can look with pride on its
fundraising and friend-raising efforts this year. With the continuing
support of American Express, the Foundation hosted its Second
Annual Take 9 Film Series, which featured evenings of classic films
as a way to introduce new audiences to the Theatre and its mission.
Brian Leddin
The Foundation also ran our two golf outings, Spring Gala, Bike for
the Basie at Sandy Hook, and other events in which we successfully
partnered with community businesses, such as J. Crew and Red
Ginger Home. In these difficult economic times, the efforts and
success of the Foundation have been remarkable.
We are going to need the Foundation to continue to do well as there
is still much to do. Though we raised a substantial sum to support the
work that was done to refurbish the auditorium last summer, we also
took on a significant EDA Bond that must be repaid. In addition, the
repairs and renovations to our 80-plus-year-old buildings are not
complete. Still on our long to-do list are:
- repairs and renovation of exterior brickwork and façade
- renovation and expansion of men’s and women’s restrooms
- installation of updated heating, ventilation and air
conditioning equipment
- updating of backstage systems and spaces
- acquisition of property adjacent to the Theatre to allow for
expansion and to provide a home for other arts organizations.
We will need the continuing support of the communities we serve,
our donors, and our patrons to accomplish these goals. The best way
to get involved is by becoming a Basie Member or Sponsor; by
contributing to the Basie Take Your Seat Campaign; or simply by
buying tickets to a show and introducing your friends to the Basie.
After all, this is your theatre.
Finally, we want to thank the Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees
and the Count Basie Theatre Foundation Board of Directors at whose pleasure
we served as Chairman and co-Chairmen for the last several years. It
has been an honor and we are certain that David Cooner as the new Chairman
of the Theatre and Russell Lucas as the New Chairman of the Foundation
will provide the continuing stewardship this fine old Theatre requires.

On June 30, 2008, the very last
day of fiscal 2008, the Count Basie
Theatre closed for a four-month,
$8 million interior restoration. The
first major interior improvement
project in the theatre’s 82-year
history resulted in restored interior
decorative paint and plaster; new
carpeting and house lighting; new
heating and fire suppression
systems; new bars and a
brand-new VIP Lounge.
The project’s completion marks
the halfway point for the theatre’s
overall restoration. $10 million of
improvements and restorations
have been completed in the last
8 years, and there are $10 million
of improvements and restorations
still to complete.
Every other Friday during
the theatre’s four-month
renovation, Hard Hat Tours
of the project were conducted for
the public. Here, NJ Assemblyman
Declan J. O’Scanlon, Jr. and
NJ Assemblywoman
Caroline Casagrande tour the
restoration of the dome.

The Count Basie Theatre’s fiscal year ends on June 30, and the annual audit commences one month later,
after the June bank statements have arrived and been reconciled. The audit takes about two months to
complete, and is formally presented to the Board of Trustees at their September meeting. Preparation,
printing and distribution of the Annual Report follows immediately, and takes about one more month to
complete. A complete copy of the 2009 Financial Statements audited by the independent accounting firm
of Fried and Kowgios Partners, CPA’s, LLP is available on request from the theatre’s administrative office.

On December 22, 2008 the Fourth Hope
Concert took the Basie stage. A semi-annual
concert to benefit local charities, this
installment raised $303,000 to benefit the
Parker Family Health Center in Red Bank.
Pictured left-right at the check presentation
are Count Basie Theatre CEO Numa
Saisselin, Parker Center President Dr.
Eugene Cheslock, Stage Manager Joe
Prinzo, Parker Center Treasurer John Horl,
and Music Director Bobby Bandiera.
Custom Homes, Inc
Singer/songwriter Nicole Atkins
also lent her voice to the cause.
The FoodBank of Monmouth and
Ocean County was on hand to collect
food. The person who donated the
most food was personally congratulated
by Jon Bon Jovi. Carol Stillwell won
the honor.
On December 31, 2008 Southside
Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were
broadcast live from the Basie on Sirius
Satellite Radio. It was their 10th New
Year’s Eve show at the Basie, a band
record for the most New Year’s Eve
shows at one venue.
For the second year in a row, the
Count Basie Theatre made Pollstar
Magazine’s Top 100 Worldwide Theatre
Venues list for 2008. The list ranks
theatres according to attendance;
the Basie clocked in at number 52.
The theatre’s Columbus and
President’s Day $10 Ticket Sales
have become an annual tradition.
This year, this program distributed
3,622 reduced price tickets to
the public.
On February 27, 2009 the annual
Chairman’s Reception celebrated the
contributions of the Basie’s major
supporters. Here, Count Basie Theatre
Board of Trustees Chairman Brian Leddin
(left) congratulates Lee Babbitt, President
of Gibraltar Construction, who donated a
major portion of their services to the
summer renovation project.

Supporters Amy and Ira Ross at the
Chairman’s Reception with Board of
Trustees member Fran Luisi and his
daughter Alliee.
Among many other activities, the
Count’s Cool School, the theatre’s arts
education program, presents Master
Classes by Broadway actors and
actresses free to the public. On
February 23, 2009 a Master Class was
presented by Jeff Whiting, Assistant
Choreographer of Young Frankenstein
on Broadway, and on June 24, 2009
by Fredi Walker-Browne
(pictured center, on stool), the original
Joanne in Broadway’s RENT.
“Bands of Brothers” was the
Jersey Shore Rock-N-Soul Revue’s
new show in February. Here
Bobby Bandiera (left) and singer
Ricky Collins (right) end a
song with a flourish.
In total, the Count’s Cool School
provides music, dance and theatre
classes to over 1,000 tuition-based
and outreach students annually.

On April 23, the Jersey Shore
Rock-N-Soul Revue revived their very
first show, “A Tribute to Roy Orbison,”
on what would have been Orbison’s 73rd
birthday. Described in the media as
Bobby Bandiera’s “finest hour,” in May
the show also played the State Theatre
in Easton, PA, and in June, NJ Public
TV and Radio’s Gala in New Brunswick.
Singer, actor and comedian
Martin Short was the star of the
6th Annual Spring Benefit Concert
and Gala on May 2, 2009.
Pictured at the pre-show cocktail party
are Honoree Russ Lucas, Honorary
Chairs Nick and Tracy Brown.
In character as Jiminy Glick,
Mr. Short interviewed Two River
Times owner and Basie supporter
Mickey Gooch during the show,
with hilarious results.
