2011/12 Mainstage Series
Enwave Theatre
The 2011-12 DanceWorks Mainstage Series features world premieres by four of
Toronto’s compelling contemporary dance companies and welcomes touring shows
from Ottawa and Montreal. These companies consider central concepts of our
human condition: mortality, spirituality, the urgent need for love and
understanding; and a desire to unlock the true nature of artistic expression. Please
join us at Harbourfront Centre’s Enwave Theatre all of the Mainstage Series events.
The strength, clarity and authenticity of each performance is sure to delight,
challenge and inspire you!
Also on offer are eight CoWorks Series events, highlighting established and
emerging dance artists in six different locations: downtown, mid-town and uptown.
In its 35th season, DanceWorks delivers the enchantment and intimacy of live
dance performance.

Signal Theatre (Toronto) from thine eyes
Choreographer: Michael Greyeyes
Composer: Miquelon Rodriguez
Dancers: Claudia Moore, Sean Ling, Ceinwen Gobert,
Piotr Biernat, Shannon Litzenberger, Michael Caldwell
A world premiere from director and choreographer Michael Greyeyes and his company,
Signal Theatre, set in limbo where six characters search for meaning at the end of their
lives, as they face their deepest fears, most cherished memories and each other.
This dance theatre production brings together two Aboriginal artists for the first time:
Michael Greyeyes and acclaimed writer Yvette Nolan. Together, they examine mortality,
memory and forgiveness, lensed through contemporary dance expression, confronting head
on the reality that only when the veil of our mortality is finally removed can we see
ourselves and each other truthfully. (This performance contains mature subject matter.)

Eight Ways From Mara – a multi-disciplinary, imaginative and visually compelling work
that takes a fresh look at the ways we avoid life's misery by relating to three elemental
forces - confusion, temptation and distraction. Distilled imagery and poetry from
Buddhist philosophy and musings reflect on modern society to achieve a work of great
richness evoking a spirituality that guides and inspires. After the stunning debut of
Frames in 2009, Zata Omm’s artistic director William Yong returns to DanceWorks
Mainstage with this unique and powerful creation.

Sylvain Émard Danse (Montreal) Fragments – Vol 1
Image: Jeremy Mimnagh
Can one become Nicaraguan? Jamaican-born, Toronto-based artist Peter
Chin answers that question with Fluency, a multidisciplinary piece
developed during a stay in Latin America, imbued with his trademark finesse
and humour. Over a two-year period, the choreographer, dancer, musician
and four-time Dora Mavor Moore Award winner, together with videographer
Jeremy Mimnagh, documented his sometimes comical efforts to learn
Spanish and to integrate into a new culture. It all led to this very playful
piece for Chin and four performers, an atypical progress report that lies
somewhere between dance, theatre, video and a talk show.
Part of
Choreographer: Sylvain Émard
Dancers: Laurence Ramsay, Manuel Roque and Catherine Viau
Performer: Monique Miller
Music: Michel F. Côté, Jan Jelinek
Scénographie: Richard Lacroix
The first part of a diptych that places the dancer at the very heart of creation,
Fragments – Volume I is a collage of miniatures - a veritable patchwork of insistent
urgency with three solos and a duo conveying the complexity and vulnerability of the
individual. Intense and often surprising, the veteran actress Monique Miller slips
majestically into this work where her minimalist movement is touchingly eloquent,
offering a troubling counterpoint to the raw energy of the three exceptional dancers.
“As a choreographer, Émard never disappoints, and his
latest piece Fragments – Volume I is a masterpiece.”

Larchaud Dance Projects Elegant Beast
Choreography: Jennifer Robichaud, Jase Cozmic
Lighting Design: Siobhan Sleath
Over burning kilns, the sculptress creates her statues.
SHE: is a modern day visionary thought to be wild, relentless, and
passionate. THE GARGOYLES: grotesque in nature, they are monsters
made with fire that ward off evil, and protect those under her watch.
Inspired by Andrew Davidson’s novel The Gargoyle, Larchaud Dance
Project premieres Elegant Beast. Deconstructing the original themes,
Elegant Beast is an investigation of the empty space between memory
and desire. Building on the break dance/contemporary style of their
trademark partnering, Robichaud and Cozmic draw on the energy and
chaotic fury of krumping to deliver an intense tale of unconventional
romance, guaranteed to captivate all audiences.
“…the kind of neck bending breakdance that will have
chiropractors rubbing their hands in gleeful anticipation…”
Michael Crabb, The National Post
DANCEWORKS EDUCATION PROGRAMS
“DanceWorks has proven to be an invaluable resource for my own work in the classroom on a number of levels.
Practically speaking, it has given me a level of dance literacy at a time when I have assumed the role of dance teacher
through the revised curriculum. For my students, the interaction with the artists has given them an important
window to the professional world, where hopefully a few of them have seen their own reflection.”

Dear Subscriber:
DanceWorks, Toronto's longest running
contemporary dance series, celebrates its 35th
anniversary in 2012. Each season we bring six
shows to Harbourfront’s Mainstage and through
our Co-Works Series, support many more artists as
they present performances at venues around town.
But our efforts don’t stop there. We work hard to
promote contemporary dance in Canada through
education programs for young people and support
programs for dance artists. Over 1,000 students will
attend our matinee performances this year.
Supported in part by the Toronto District School
Board, our Adopt-A-Schools program offers tickets
to students at a greatly reduced cost, ensuring that
young people can access our shows. DanceWorks
offers engaging learning opportunities, including
introductory dance workshops, master classes and
open dress rehearsals.
