Spring has sprung for olh!
The spring of 2016 seems to have taken its time
arriving
in Southampton.
The beautiful flowering pear
trees on
the front
lawn are
ready to burst into their cerise
blossoms and the green lawns
invite students to play and enjoy
nature.
The OLH Baseball Team has
already posted an exciting 4-1
record in CMSAA. The prep 6-7-8
squad travels westward and
meets rival teams at Baseball
Heaven in Yaphank.
The combined Softball squad of girls from OLH
and St. Patrick’s Smithtown is working to rebuild after
a year’s hiatus in CMSAA play. (Many of the Prep girls
are playing on the school’s Volleyball team with practices and games that make playing both sports impossible.)
Despite a chilly night filled with ominous rain
clouds lurking over Central Islip, the twenty-five
member Hamptonix singing group took to the baseball
field and had the privilege of singing the National Anthem at the LI Ducks-Maryland Blue Crab game.
Two hundred loyal Hamptonix fans (mostly family) stood
and sang along as the boys offered a stirring a cappella
version of the traditional patriotic song. The live camera
flashed the singers’ images on the jumbo-tron in the outfield.
Families then stayed for the game and participated in
many of the between-innings games and unusual physical
challenges.
The activities of the new spring season were featured
as the OLH community celebrated Earth Day.
Respect for the
beauty of our
surroundings
and the planet
that
we have
been given resulted in special
lessons and activities including
the
adoption
and planting of
50
white
spruce
trees!
A WINNING DUO….PREP AND SENIORS
As is our custom,
Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic
School
opened
its
doors to the senior
community for a special
luncheon each year.
The eighth
grade
class sponsors such an
event to pay respect
trays are adorned. Coffee,
tea, and water stations are
prepped as well.
When the guests arrive, the students greet
them at a sign-in welcome
table. They are then escorted to their seats where
the junior waiters and waitresses take their beverage
and show appreciation for our senior
citizens.
The day starts
off with the students setting up
and making the
appropriate preparations. The tables
are lined in the cafeteria
and
the
stage area set up for several performances. Numerous
people work
in the kitchen to prepare
the
food. Sandwiches are
made, salads
ardressed,
and dessert
orders. Soon after, salads
and
sandwiches
are
brought to the tables.
Musical entertainment
is provided by school choir
groups, the Hamptones
and the Hamptonix as well
as the senior tap team.
Special videos and prizes complete the day.
This event is the highlight of the season for
EARTH DAY OUTTAKES
——Prep 8 led a
special bake sale
to help provide
for new plantings
around the
school campus.
___Prep 7 prepared a special
earth day liturgy
many of the local
seniors. It s also
a
wonderful
chance for the
soon-to-be graduates to show
appreciation for
their elders.

THE HISTORIAN IN OUR MIDST
OLH Prep 7 student John Allan successfully advanced from the regional level of
competition in the National History Bee and will
travel to Chicago on June 9 for the national finals!
The National History Bee is a
competition for students in grades
five to eight that tests knowledge
of American and World History
topics.
John scored the highest in
the preliminary round of tests
at OLH, and then went on to
take the online exam from the
National History Bee back in
January.
John went to the regionals in
New Jersey and qualified to represent the Middle Atlantic States in the
National Final in Chicago. -Mrs. Hanley
PREP STUDENTS EMBRACE THE FUTURE
There are some things about proposed
professions and careers that can only be studied in textbooks, online or in the newspapers.
The prep students were given a first-hand experience of “rubbing elbows” with local community professionals at the first CAREER DAY.
Thirty-five parents, community leaders
and
craftsmen filled the
auditorium
on
April 23 under
the direction
of Mrs. Hanley.
Among
them
were
attorneys,
landscapers, police officers, psychologists, doctors, pilots, dentists, painters, authors, accountants, photographers, social workers, chefs and contractors, all of whom shared their
expertise when questioned by the
students.

Back in the fifties when television was all black and white and
a thirteen inch screen was considered to be huge), a distinguished musician, Leonard Bernstein presented the
Young People’s Concerts, teaching elements of musical
composition and styles to millions of young viewers.
On April 15, our very own
music
teacher Mr. Joseph Basar
presented a similar experience….a full master
class on the three B’s of
music: Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.
A lot of class preparation gave the students
some initial background so
that
they could participate fully in
the class.
Mr. Basar taught the material along
with the performance skills of most of the school groups: the Hamptones who performed the “Air for Advent “ by Bach, the Recorder
Club who offered some Beethoven , assisted by the Guitar class. The
Dance Troupes contributed a very special piece choreographed to the
work of Brahms.
The Jazz team and soloists Francesco Tamma and Mary Ann
Ryan on violin and Kieran Ameres on cello performed, as did the
Rock group of Christian and Peter Mangiameli and Dan Sullivan.
The rock drummer, keyboardist and guitarist donned traditional
white wigs to join their mentor who now ranks up there as the fifth
B...after Bach, Beethoven,
Brahms, Bernstein...and
BASAR!
