Homecoming 2005 - Winter Wonderland
by Sarah Stone
On November 11, 2005 the Sloan-Hendrix
student council presented the annual homecoming event. The theme for this year’s ceremony
was Winter Wonderland.
The evening began with a junior boys
game against the Viola Longhorns. Sloan-Hendrix won 35-24.
Tessa Blansett and Ryan Kalousek began
the ceremony by introducing the master and
mistress of ceremonies, Brad Bridges and
Jaime Steele. After welcoming guests and
alumni, Brad and Jaime introduced the candle
lighters, Tabitha Young and Cody Adams. Following the candle lighting was the introduction
of the basketball team members. When all the
ball players and managers had been introduced
and were seated on the gym floor, it was time
to present the 2005-2006 homecoming court.
Introductions began with the Jr. High
maids and their escorts. Ashley Ingram was
the 7th grade maid and was escorted by Tyler
Gillean. The 8th grade maid was Amanda Holland. She was escorted by Matthew Baldridge.

STAR Day
by Jeremy Gipson
On Friday, November 4, during 7th and 8th period, a carnival was held at the city
park for all STAR members. Thanks to Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Stephens this event was possible. Events included duck pick, ping pong game, horse shoes, limbo, cans and ball, rings
on bottles, baseball throw, bean bag toss, and face painting. Marti Tate mentioned how she
enjoyed limbo, dancing, and the funnel cakes. The menu at the concession stand included
nachos, popcorn, sodas, and funnel cakes. Sheena Swartzlander said she Aparticularly liked
the food served at the event.@ Each STAR member received four tickets; two to be used for
food and two for games. Because these students have shown they take their education seriously by making good grades, having good attendance, and having no discipline problems,
they were allowed to spend this beautiful fall afternoon having fun and enjoying great company. Jeremy Gipson said Athat what he enjoyed most was getting a break from being a good
student and having some fun.@
On Thursday, October 20, 2005, from
2:00-6:00 pm, Sloan-Hendrix held Parent/
Teacher Conferences. They were a great success with a parental attendance rate of 77%.

cards had been issued to a parent or guardian.

impressed with the level of parental involvement. He stated that Athese were the best Parent/Teacher Conferences we=ve ever had.@
Two thumbs up to Sloan‑Hendrix students
and parents for their participation and concern!

Williams Baptist

by Marti Tate
The Williams Baptist College tournament

champs. Seeded 6th over all, the Lady Greyhounds first defeated Tuckerman, 58-21, then
Marmaduke, 47-41, Viola, 50-41, and Hoxie,
48-38. Saturday night, the girls came out to
kick off the championship game with a 9-0
lead in the first two minutes of play. Leading
the 1st seeded lady Mustangs the whole game,
the girls came out on top and were presented
with a trophy in front of tons of thrilled fans.
Cody Adams, Tessa Blansett, Tamrin Collins,

the Aplayer of the game@ and received a gift
certificate for a free pizza buffet from Breadeux

though the 2nd seeded Greyhounds lead the
whole game against 1st seeded Riverside,

Working Towards a Healthier School
Environment
School breakfast and lunch is a great option for busy families, it’s easy and economical, and it’s also a great way to make sure your child gets the daily nutrients that are essential to success in school.
Meals provided through your school are part of the National School Lunch Program.
• Foods are provided from the five main food groups
• Meals must meet the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
• Nutrient analysis of meals is averaged over the course of a week.
• Meals may not contain more than 30% of calories from fat nor more than 10% of calories from saturated fat.
These days, kids will find some of their favorite foods on lunchroom serving lines.
School food service works hard to make food tasty, appealing, and convenient.
With the advent of new federal nutrition guidelines for school meals, experts are
paying more and more attention to what’s in the lunch on your child’s tray everyday. And
they’re impressed with what they are finding.
Recent studies show that school lunches can be a healthy alternative for parents looking for convenient, inexpensive and nutritionally sound choices for their kids. Elementary
school kids who ate lunch and breakfast at school got more calcium, protein, and vitamins
with less fat and sugar than their classmates who brought lunch from home.
There is an epidemic in our country—children and teens are becoming more overweight, sedentary, and undernourished. School food services are taking part in nationwide
initiatives to solve this problem by helping to create a healthy school environment for all
kids by promoting sound nutrition and physical activity.
Black & Gold Games
Jennifer Hackworth
On October 18, 2005 at 5:00 p.m.,
Sloan‑Hendrix seventh grade, junior high,
and senior high basketball teams had their
inter‑squad scrimmages, also known as the
Black and Gold Games. At these games, all of
the teams demonstrated superior athletic ability
and sportsmanship. Coach Richey enjoys the
Black and Gold Games because, AThey give
me a chance to see how some players will
react in game situations.@ The Black and Gold
Games gave basketball fans a preview of what
the 2005‑2006 Greyhound season has in store.
On a tastier note, free food was enjoyed by all.
Thanks to Citizens Bank for grilling the burgers and hotdogs and also for giving out drinks
and chips to go with the meal. At the end of
the night, everyone left well‑fed and happy......
because the Greyhounds won!
Tony the Tiger and Food Service Supervisor Mrs. Lillard encouraged
Sloan-Hendrix Elementary students to adopt healthy eating habits, to
"Smart Start" their day, and to get active at an assembly on December 2.
