MHSAA district title
Notre Dame won its 9th
consecutive district title, the
most consecutive district titles
for any sport at Notre Dame, as
the Irish defeated Cranbrook
10-0 (5 innings) and Marian 104. The Day started with Marian
defeating Lutheran North 8-1
behind the pitching of Hailey
Conway in the first semifinal
match up. The second semifinal
pitted Cranbrook against host
Notre Dame. After an hour and
a half rain delay to start things
off, the game resumed and
NDP proceeded to push across
three runs in the bottom of the
first inning. The bats for both
teams remained quiet until the
fourth when with two out the
Irish batted around, scoring
four more runs. In the fifth
inning Notre Dame pushed
across the final three runs to
reach the mercy limit and end
the game. Caley Gleason picked
up the win, yielding no runs on
two hits, striking out 6 and no
walks. Hannah Antosz, Maddie
McClune and Hanna Bullard
each collected 2 hits and scored
twice. Bullard (2-run homerun)
and Antosz each drove in 3 runs.
In the championship game the
Irish took an early lead and never
looked back on their way to the
win. Notre Dame banged out 18
hits as every player in the Irish
lineup collected at least one hit.
The Irish opened the scoring after
two were out in the first inning
when Bullard, Brooke Krausmann
and Gleason strung together
three straight hits to score a pair
of runs. The Mustangs answered
with a run in the bottom of the
inning as Lauren Ogurek hit a
shot up the middle, was sacrificed
to second and scored on a base
hit by Ary Dadabbo. The Irish
lead was back up to 2 runs in the
3rd inning as Bullard lined a ball
over the left-center field fence for
her second homerun of the day.
Notre Dame batted around in the
fourth as they scored 5 runs on 5
hits. The Irish bats remained hot
as they scored two more times in
the sixth inning when McClune
lead off with a single, followed by
a double from Krausmann putting
runners at second and third, and
winning pitcher Gleason drove
them both home with a line drive
single to right center. Gleason
went the distance in the win,
giving up 4 earned runs on 9 hits,
and stiking out 2. Bullard was
once again solid behind the dish
at and at the plate as she went 2
for 3 with her second HR of the
day, scored twice and drove in
two. Krausmann went 3 for 4,
scored twice, and drove in 1.
CRANES UPSET IRISH IN
DISTRICT SEMIFINAL
A season filled with promise
ended on a sour note on Saturday
as Notre Dame dropped a 7-3
decision to Cranbrook in the
district semifinals held at NDP.
The Irish won every statistical
battle in the game except on the
scoreboard, including outhitting
the Cranes 11 to 2. A Cranbrook
team the Irish had beaten four
times in league play proved to
have the right stuff at the right
time to prematurely end the
NDP season. Cranbrook took
full advantage of the eight
walks and two hit batsman by
NDP pitching, three errors that
extended innings, and executed
three suicide squeeze bunts
to drive in runs. At the same
time NDP hit the ball hard all
through the game but had little
to show for it. Cranbrook’s Matt
Thelen had all the answers to end
several Irish threats in throwing
a complete game to earn the
win. Down 1-0 in the second,
NDP pitcher Will Mullen ripped
an RBI single with two outs.
Shortstop Kory Czajkowski then
cued a ball toward second base
which took a wicked hop and
turned into another RBI single
to give the Irish an early lead.
Sadly Mike MacLean’s fielder’s
choice in the fourth inning was
the only other run NDP could
produce. Mark Marrone relieved
Mullen in the decisive fourth
inning and kept Cranbrook at
bay through the final 2 and 1/3
innings. Mullen and Matt Bur had
two hits each for the Irish. The
Irish end the season at 21-14-1
and graduate seven seniors who
have all contributed mightily to
the program including four year
starters Luke Shilling (Illinois)
and Mullen (Western Michigan).
Also off to play college baseball
are infielders Jake DePillo
(Hillsdale) and Joey Vyskocil
(Wisconsin/Mikwaukee), pitcher
Mark Marrone (Northwood) and
outfielder Matt Bur (Albion).
The Irish also graduate infielder
Michael MacLean.

REGIONAL TITLE HOPES
Erika Wiest beat Marian
goalkeeper Megan Bricely from
25- yards out just 24 seconds
into the second overtime period
as Notre Dame (13-5-1) upset
#1-ranked Marian 1-0 to claim
a district championship and
advance in the MHSAA playoffs.
The loss was the Mustangs first of
the season (15-1-4) and the first
time NDP had beaten Marian
since Barry Brodsky took over
the program 14 years ago. Megan
Kraus earned the shutout for the
Irish, making several key saves
including a stop on Marian’s
Jaclyn Engel as time expired in
regulation.
A rebound goal by Monique
Michalski at the 22:43 mark of
the first half proved to be the
difference on Tuesday night as
Warren Regina defeated Notre
Dame 1-0 to advance in the
MHSAA regional round. The
Irish, who defeated Farmington
in penalty kicks and #1-ranked
Marian in double overtime last
week, had trouble getting their
offense going against a Saddelites
team whose strength lies in their
back end. “I don’t want to blame
maybe a little bit of an emotional
hangover from Saturday, but we
didn’t bring any sort of energy
to the game” said Notre Dame
head coach Jim Stachura. “It’s
great to beat Marian, but I told
the girls that if you’re going to
play hard and win Saturday, then
you might as well come to play
today. Losing Saturday or losing
today, the result is the same.”
The Irish finish up the season at
13-6-2 and graduate five seniors,
Sarah Mazur, Christine Scheer,
Sarah Pieciak, Megan Kraus, and
Breanna Gemelli. Mazur, Scheer,
and Pieciak were all four-year
starters for Notre Dame. Regina
(16-2-4), who is coached by Notre
Dame Boys Soccer coach Ryan
Elchuk, will now advance to take
on Fenton in the regional final.
