FRUIT VARIETY
RESEARCH
COT INTERNATIONAL is a company
specialized in research and propagation of stone
fruit varieties.
The target is:
- To prospect in the whole world for new varieties
- To test the new introduced varieties in its orchards for their behaviour.
- The distribution of the most interesting varieties with breeder agreement.
We actually undertake an APRICOT breeding
program, in order to improve this specie and offer to
our customers the best qualities. Our main selection
criteria are the following:
Ripening time : Extending our varietal calendar,
from the beginning of May to mid-August
Agronomic characteristics : Self-fertility,
important and regular production every year, good
tree management, Fruit resistance to harvest, packing
and weather problems (rain and wind).
Climatic change adaptation : Our varieties
don’t require many chilling hours
Fruit Eating quality : A good balance of sugar /
acidity; a juicy and melting texture; good and specific
aroma.
Colour : Consumers mainly buying with their eyes,
we select apricots with a large red blush present on
30 - 50% of the surface.
Size : Size 2A is the most requested by the buyers.
However, we try to select varieties with great
potential of size and production to limit thinning and
therefore production costs and get the maximum
tonnage of 2A.
Firmness : For the resistance to manipulations and
for the storage ability.
Tolerance to diseases : Bacteriosis, Sharka,
ECA, Xanthomonas, Monilia, etc…

VARIETY
DISTRIBUTION
Once the varieties selected, we start the
process of multiplication of the trees, executed
by different nurseries under license with COT
INTERNATIONAL (full list can be obtained on
demand).
First of all, we proceed to the indexation and the
tree cloning to test the sanitary quality. This is to
guarantee at the same time, the authenticity of the
variety to our customers. These operations are done
in very close collaboration with the CTIFL and at the
end stands the allocation of the plant certification.
VARIETY PROTECTION
Each selected variety is protected within the E U
by the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO). The
National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA)
exams the variety and states that the plant is a new
variety. Following the technical confirmation of INRA,
the CPVO grants a COV, attributing to its holder, the
exclusive rights of propagation and merchandising of
the new variety.
For all countries not belonging to the E U, we ask for
individual national certificates.
Every person, wishing to multiply, to grow trees and
to sell fruit of a variety with a COV, must request
permission from the holder of the variety.
