The 2nd Annual CornHolio, a NoDa Corn Hole Tournament, will be held August 28th at 28th Row (2424 North Davidson Street,
Suite 113 – the former NC Dance Theatre space). And this year, the tournament is back with a vengeance! American Tailgating
League (yes, a professional firm that runs professional tailgating events) has signed on to help run the tournament. They have
set up the event website (www.knownoda.org/cornholio), are providing 20+ corn hole sets, refereeing, and are running the
brackets with the use of a computer program specifically designed for this type of game play.
28th Row has graciously donated the space, 5,000 square feet of indoor, air-conditioned space, as well as the outdoor parking
area for practice, music, and tailgating. Yes, tailgating. This event is B.Y.O.B! Load up your coolers and come on down. On-site
registration will begin at 1:00PM and tournament action will start promptly at 2:00PM.
The Social Committee is currently working on a food sponsor (very close, and exciting update coming soon). Amelie’s French
Bakery is donating desserts for all the players. That alone is worth the effort!
Advanced payment online is $20/person ($40/team) and payment day of event is $25/person ($50/team).
Registrants will receive entrance into the tournament, food, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverages as well as a chance to win
prizes!
First placing team in the tournament will receive $350 in cash and prizes ($100 in cash, $250 in gift certificates) as well as
entrance into the National Corn Hole tournament courtesy of American Tailgating League. Nationals will be hosted in Las Vegas,
Nevada during Super Bowl weekend of 2011. The winner of CornHolio will have a secured spot into Nationals and their team
entry fee waived ($500 entry is standard for National entrants) for a chance to win $100,000! Second placing team will receive
$250 in gift certificates. Third placing team will receive $150 in gift certificates. There will also be a loser’s bracket and the winner
of the loser’s bracket will receive $100 in prizes.
The Social Committee is also still securing prizes (the ones mentioned above have already been secured), so if your business
would like to donate a prize, please contact Hollis Nixon at [email protected]. All donations are tax-deductible. The more
prizes received, the bigger the pool, and more opportunity for a few door prizes.
Several participating businesses have also agreed to run specials at their establishments just for CornHolio participants. So, if
you hang out in NoDa after the event and are wearing your official CornHolio wristband, expect to get some great deals Saturday
night. More event details coming soon. But, please go ahead and check out www.knownoda.org/cornholio. Online payment is
live and it would be great to start getting teams ready to go, especially to have a head count for the food sponsor. Make sure
you have a teammate. The event requires team registration and “singles” will not be paired up day of event. More details will be
added to the website as we move along, so please check back. Make sure and tell all of your friends, that is, if you can handle the

Growlers Pourhouse OPENS in NoDa in AUGUST!
Charlotte’s craft brew community is bustling—from the Charlotte Beer Club and Craft Beer week in March to Olde Mecklenburg
Brewing Company and Charlotte’s new Four Friends Brewing. And now, there’s a new home for it all: Growlers Pourhouse,
opening in NoDa in August 2010.
Craft brewing has long been a popular trade in human history, but from 1920 to 1933, the 18th Amendment was in full swing in
the United States, prohibiting the sale of alcohol. Alcohol companies plummeted, redirecting the revenue growth into different
products like ginger ale, root beer, and ice cream. Despite the restraints on alcohol sales, it was a burgeoning time for America.
Flapper dresses, art deco, and Model Ts were the MO, and as the sale of alcohol was legally removed from bars and restaurants
and saloons, it began to rise up in more private places. Bars would often hide their alcohol business from authorities by charging
people an entrance fee and giving alcohol to entrants. It was a win win. As bars attempted to survive, alcohol also began to
bustle in the home-brewing arena, and underground craft brewing began to thrive.
Growlers Pourhouse celebrates American craft beer by serving a rotating menu of harder-to-find craft beers like Smuttynose, Left
Hand, Lagunitas and Bear Republic. “The idea behind Growlers Pourhouse is to give people an authentic craft beer experience.
We rotate our beers to keep our menu fresh and also encourage people to try new beers but we will always have 12 core styles
that people are looking for,” says Jeff Tonidandel, owner of Growlers Pourhouse and Crepe Cellar Kitchen & Pub. “Those who love
craft beer know that beer can be as unique and interesting as wine—and Growlers is offering that uniqueness to its customers.”
So what’s the deal with the “beer food”? Tonidandel says it was just the perfect way of describing the menu. “All the food on the
menu was specifically chosen because it has been traditionally served with beer. We want to stay true to that, again, to give our
customers an authentic craft beer experience.” The menu includes “beer food” such as oysters, housemade sausages and brats,
cheese, chips & homemade dips and several delectable Americana desserts all made in house.
Where are you from? I’m from the Midwest. Growing up, I
was interested in the arts. I would turn my parents’ trash into
treasures and doodle masterpieces for the refrigerator; they
encouraged my passions by enrolling me in art classes and
providing creative materials. Where did you learn? I
started honing my artist’s
talents in high school. I
studied art in college then,
received my Master of Arts
from Savannah College
of Art and Design. Here, I
was exposed to talented
students that helped me
push my limits. What do you think of the local art scene? I love the local
art scene; that is why we moved to NoDa about three years
ago. The neighborhood is supportive of what many of us love
to do. Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration comes from
my two Boston Terriers. I love their facial expressions and big
attitudes. The pups inspire me to make light-hearted art that
is cute and fun. I focus mostly on pets and enjoy bringing out
their personalities.
If your art were a statement, it would say: My art says: FUN.
ENERGETIC. CHARACTER. Who/What influences your art? There are lots of things that
influence my art. I take influence from many different types of
creatives: artist, graphic designers, photographers, and interior
designers. What advice would you give to an artist just starting out?
Experiment. Don’t get locked down in one medium right away,
push your limits, and don’t be afraid to fail. What else do you do for fun? For fun, I love to travel with my
husband and explore anything from the great outdoors to the
big city. I am an adventurer, and I’ll try anything once. If you could create one art installation in NoDa, without
regard for expense or effort, what would it be? I would love
to see a mural in the North Charlotte Neighborhood Park that
would tell the story of NoDa. It would be inspiring to have
local artists each design and paint a portion of this historical
timeline. How can we find your art? My art is displayed on Etsy http://

NoDa’s Newest
ENTERTAINMENT VENUE
Opening in AUGUST
In early August 2010, NoDa’s newest entertainment venue will open to the
public. Sin City, a bar with a Las Vegas theme will begin operations at 3205
N. Davidson Street (next to Dolce Vita and The Yarn House). Sin City will be owned and operated by two local NoDa residents, Sean
Wilbur and Jerry Hebert. The venue itself will feature an octagon shaped
bar with seating for 30 or more people, slot machines, disco balls, private
booth seating and lots of TV’s ranging from 42 inches to 72 inches. Vegas
themes will abound as local artists will bring you renditions of The Rat Pack,
the Las Vegas Skyline, and the early gangster influence that started Las
Vegas in the first place. Sin City will be a Private Club serving beer, wine and mixed drinks. We will also serve pre-made food from other local NoDa
establishments along with snacks and refreshments. We are excited and look forward to opening our doors to serve NoDa in

Considering Budget Cuts

Babies…Not So Green!

As of press time, I hope to have had my baby. But, as I sit here writing this article, she
is safely tucked away in my belly. Having a second child for us was a) a surprise! and b)
another opportunity to be very un-green. Here’s what I mean:
We had to buy another car. Not a bigger car, just a 2nd one; so my husband can take #1
to school and I can take #2 on a seemingly endless series of Doctor visits (unfortunately
the iTimeTravel app is not yet available for the iPhone … I checked). We may contribute hundreds or thousands of diapers into the landfill over the next
2+ years. Plus, the obvious 80+ years of another human depleting more of the Earth’s
resources (unless she invents the silver bullet that curtails resource depletion – then
it’s a wash). When you really think about it, those cute, cooing bundles of joy are quite a drain on
resources (not to mention on their parents' mental and financial resources….). So, we
did our research and for what it is worth, here are some of the things we are choosing
to do to help mitigate this tiny toxic waste machine! 1. Painted her room in low VOC paint. 2. Researched the painful cloth vs. disposable diaper dilemma. Ended up deciding on
a mixture: cloth for home (organic hemp!), non-gel, non-bleached disposables for
outings and travel. By the way, there is no good answer on this one, except to potty
train as early as possible!
3. Will opt for breastfeeding instead of bottle feeding. But, if breastfeeding is not
possible, we will choose an organic formula.
As I write this article for the July issue of the NoDa
newsletter, decisions are being made about the county
budget. It is possible that Mecklenburg Parks and
Recreation Department may lose half of its staff members.
In these economic times, nothing is safe from the impact
of the loss of resources. I write today not knowing what
the results will be. I write because I know that Parks and
Recreation is not just parks and playgrounds. They have a
specialized department called Therapeutic Recreation (TR),
which impacts many residents within our county who are
not always able to speak up and lobby for support. Our 7-year old son, Ben, is one such resident. He attends the summer camp
sponsored by the TR Department each summer for 6 weeks. The TR Department
offers programs and services for children and adults with special needs. The staff
is highly qualified to work with this population of people. Their understanding
of people with visual, hearing, mobility and intellectual challenges is amazing.
The programs they offer are creative, inclusive and caring. Mecklenburg County
happens to have one of the best TR departments in NC with several staff
members winning awards for specific programs. Budget cuts will happen, services will be changed.
As a community we all will need to step up and help fill the gaps whether it
be in schools, libraries, parks or other community agencies. If Parks and Rec is

4. Invested in long-term furniture made from sustainable materials to see her through
her toddlers, teens and beyond.

neighbors.

produce.
7. We requested clothing made from organic cotton, and thanks to friends and family,
she is all set with soft, organic onesies and sleepers.
Wish us luck – not only with our newborn, but with our attempt to be as environmentally
sensitive as possible. However, if you see me walking down the street with a giant box
of Pampers, be kind and just look the other way…

June's Association Member of the Month

The July Green Yard of the Month belongs to Gretchen Alterowitz and
Mikale Kwiatkowski at 705 E 37th St. These recent transplants from Seattle
wanted to eliminate the grass in their front yard so they created a raised
bed vegetable garden and a patio made with native North Carolina stone.
The vegetable garden was placed in the front yard because it receives the
most sun and they decided on raised beds to better contain the plants and
add to the landscaping. In the beds, tomatoes and basil are companion
planted together because each helps the other grow, as well as beets,
broccoli, radishes, kale, cilantro, cucumbers, eggplant, squash, watermelon,
and artichoke. Also, to keep the bugs away, marigolds and pungent smelling
herbs like coriander and chives were planted. By the front steps, several herbs
are planted together, including lavender and hyssop, that attract bees that
will pollinate other plants. Gretchen and Mikale are committed to organic
gardening practices including hand picking bugs off the plants, being
resourceful with water by watering deeply and during the morning, using
soap sprays (such as castile soap) instead of insecticides, and understanding
that vegetables don’t have to look perfect to be edible and will actually taste
better because you grew them. Recycled brick found in their yard during
their landscaping project and from another torn down house was used to
make edging and paths. One of their best tips was to take on a landscaping
project in sections so it isn’t overwhelming. Walk by Gretchen and Mikale’s

her! One day, while walking in Cordelia Park, she noticed how much litter was
in the portion of Little Sugar Creek that runs through the park. Subsequently,
she joined The Greenification Committee, contacted the City and singlehandedly organized the first Adopt-A-Stream clean-up in conjunction with the
Villa Heights Community. She has organized 3 such clean-ups and is planning
another one in October. These semi-annual stream clean-ups ensure that the
NoDa Neighborhood remains on a sign honoring the volunteers who keep the
creek free of debris.
Thank you to Jennifer and all of our neighbors who donate time and energy to
making our neighborhood an even better place to live, work and play. Join us at
this month’s meeting and find out who will be recognized for July!

LINEAGE OF NODA
The Adam Ramsey Miller Gallery is proud to present 'Lineage of NoDa', an exhibition
of art opening June 25. This group show brings together for the first time many of
the original NoDa Artists who helped to pioneer the historic Art district. These artist
have all worked together in the past but not all together at the same time. Also
included will be 2 newcomers to the NoDa scene. Featured will be work by NoDa
veterans Ruth Ava Lyons, Mike Bozart, Raed Al-Rawi, Jerry Lee Kirk, Rebecca Jones,
Alex Clark, Frank Haas and Rusk Masterton. Representing current NoDa are works by
Jenny Payne and Izaac Payne.
For almost 20 years NoDa has been Charlotte's premier art district. The purpose of this
exhibit is to honor and showcase some of the Artists who have been an integral part
of NoDa's evolution. Included in the exhibit will be new paintings and monoprints
of various styles and themes. Like NoDa itself, this exhibit promises to be an eclectic
and exciting event. Local recording artist Chris English will be performing live during
the opening reception, which takes place during the Concord's downtown Art Walk.

Scavenger Hunt
A Picture Perfect Success

The month of May saw the 4th Annual Know NoDa
Scavenger Hunt roll through NoDa. With $4,857 in cash
and prizes on the line, competition was fierce. Twentythree teams competed this year during a weekend of
madness for a shot at the grand prize of $1,000, courtesy
of Fifth Third Bank.
Our fearless teams started their crusades for the prizes
on Friday, May 15th at 7pm. They spent the next 48
hours decrypting and photographically cataloging their
adventures thru NoDa, Plaza-Midwood, and Uptown
Charlotte. Most teams had two things to say about their
experiences as their turned in their clues the following
Sunday afternoon at Revolution Pizza: "We had a blast!
And we are exhausted!"

and won the competition with 1255 points. Their gamesmanship earned them points for such things as tracking down
city council members, a NoDa tattoo at Fu's, and participation in a live show at Carolina Actors' Studio Theatre. For their
efforts, they were rewarded with two $500 mastercards. Team Peanut and the Girls came in a close second with 1140
points and took home $500 in cold hard cash, courtesy of Bojangles. Team NoDa NoDarazzi trailed in third place with
1080 points and took home a $50 gift card to Solstice Tavern, a $50 gift card from Lulu, 2 All Sport passes to the U.S.
National Whitewater Center, a $16 gift card to Salvador Deli, a $100 voucher from Club K-9, 2 sandwiches and 2 bottles
of wine from NoDa Market & Deli, a $50 pass to Ultimate Gym, and a $13 gift card from Tasty Yo!
This year’s Scavenger Hunt also raised $600.01 for the NoDa Neighborhood Association. Special thanks to Fifth Third
