Vol. 07 Iss. 06 Twitter @NoDaNews NEW LIFE COMING TO YARDS AT NODA: facebook.com/nodaCLT JULY 2013 by Brett Rice Panorama of Yards at Noda site seen from Matheson Bridge. The tower in the center is the back of Highland Mill, with Fat City just beyond. John Bell, the developer newly hired by Gvest Partners, welcomed City Council members, local media and many Charletteans to the groundbreaking ceremony for The Yards at NoDa. The $40 million dollar project will feature studio, one, two, and three bedroom apartment units, townhomes, a resort style pool, fitness center, clubhouse and dog park. The property is located behind the Johnston YMCA, south of the Chop Shop on East 33rd Street. Ray Gee, one of two managing partners for Gvest, has been in the Charlotte area for ten years and declared the Queen City his home forever. Gvest has an Atlanta office and is starting their work in Charlotte with this project. Updos, Makeovers and A Day in the Life of the Orange Olive by Matt Lemere There’s something more interesting nestled between the blow dryers, hair shears and styling gel at the Orange Olive than your typical hair gallery. You’ll also find one of NoDa’s most prized art galleries. And both are the brainchildren of owner Melissa Needham. According to Dumont Clarke, a representative of District Four on the Board of County Commissioners, this project, “shows signs of vitality in Mecklenburg County” and “you can’t ask for a better place than in NoDa to redevelop.” First, the hair gallery: Melissa explains she is “genetically predisposed” to work in a hair salon. Her mom was a hair stylist when Melissa was growing up in New Jersey. After earning a degree from UNC-Charlotte in Organizational Communications, Melissa worked in and managed several area salons. But she needed something more to help challenge her creative spirit. She envisioned a salon that would be focused on “hair, the arts, and the community.” Bell said it was the forward thinking of the city leaders to create the BLE and the vision of connecting communities together that led to opportunities like this project. “From a developer’s perspective, it is a great way to create more density and vibrant communities.” That’s when Melissa’s friend, Bryan Quan – a quintessential NoDa free spirit and one who is sorely missed – suggested NoDa would be the perfect spot for a new salon. She remembers she thought it was a natural fit. “The people who live here are creative and are the types of clients we want in our salon. And it was a good opportunity because there were no other salons to compete with back then.” The Yards at NoDa will open in the spring of 2014, adding five hundred residents to the NoDa community. They are looking to reach out to local artists to create graffiti on the walls. “What every developer wants is to have an apartment complex in a great neighborhood with cool shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants and have it be walk-able and unique,” said Bell. That, good sir, is exactly what you’ve got!!! Next, the art gallery: In 2008 when Orange Olive opened its doors, traditional art galleries were starting to feel the pain of the economic recession. Soon neighborhood galleries began to close, and the Orange Olive stepped in to fill the void. The (continued on page 2) The NODA Vision Committee meets at 7pm on the third Wednesday of each month at Oak Realty, 3476 North Davidson Street. TAKE A LOOK INSIDE: Assassins! Art: NoDa.org Orange Olive Beagles! AMOM! Alex! page 2 Updos, Makeovers and (continued from page 1) Art: A Day in the Life of the Orange Olive salon began showcasing local emerging artists and hosted gallery openings to coincide with a Gallery Crawl Friday night. Melissa remembers it wasn’t easy at first and recalled several early tribulations. “It was hard to get those first artists to promote their event, so sometimes we’d have a really small crowd. One artist forgot about the opening and didn’t make it to his own event,” she recalls, laughing about it now. But it has matured and flourished over time and has become a natural part of their work environment. “It’s mutually beneficial for the artist and the salon,” she says. Artists find encouragement, blank walls and an eager audience in her salon. Many of the artists are up-and-coming, and few have had many opportunities to hang their works in a traditional gallery. The salon does not receive commission for any art that is sold so artists can keep prices low to customers. Whatever she’s doing, it seems to be working. The Orange Olive has been recognized twice with Creative Loafing’s “Best of Charlotte” award. They also took home the coveted “Best Stress-Free Salon” BOB (Best of the Best) Award hosted by Charlotte Magazine. Last fall, three of her stylists were selected to help do the speakers’ hair and make-up at the Democratic National Convention. Melissa’s excited about the future and looks forward to the salon evolving. “I enjoy the process of growth and accomplishing things,” she said. “I enjoy chipping away at a problem until it’s resolved.” She also has a weak spot for burgers and beer, but that’s a story for another article. Scott Whiteside, a Charlotte native, is the current artist at the Orange Olive. Scott incorporates a variety of recycled materials to create his works, and he has been heavily influenced by the Lowbrow Art Movement. This underground art style started in Los Angeles in the 1970s and has seen a recent resurgence in popular art. His works will be displayed until September. es N EW CASA Learn a new language at our new location! We’re pleased to announce our new space in the Midwood International & Cultural Center. Call or visit us online today! CAROLINALANGUAGE.COM by Lauren Schalburg, treasurer Did you know the NoDa Neighborhood and Business Association is a federally recognized 501(c)3 charity? That means that all your free will contributions to the Association or any of its many committees is tax-deductible. ...And that means that many employers will match those contributions! Some larger corporations will even match your volunteer hours with monetary donations. So you can log every meeting you attend, every stream cleanup, every Ghost & Legend Tour you guide, etc. and report those hours. Even your dues can be matched dollar for dollar! This is a great way for NoDa NBA to raise the funds that help us accomplish our many goals. The salon, in turn, gets a facelift every few months as the exhibits change. “The new art energizes the stylists and keeps them creative. The space is always fresh and evolving rather than being stagnant,” she added. M I CASA Time is Money and Money is Doubled! You may remember him as the tall bartender at Sanctuary a couple years ago. For the last 18 months, he’s been with Neighborhood Theatre, now as General Manager. We’ve seen him at just about every hour working like mad to get the place up and running since the management change in March. The bar is now open (not only on nights with shows), and Alex says, “Being involved with Neighborhood Theatre is fantastically exciting, it’s a real cornerstone of the neighborhood I’ve lived in since 2005 and a chance to shape the music scene in the city overall. We’ve totally remodeled the bar, fixed up the bathrooms and installed a new PA and lighting rig, but haven’t altered the ethos of the venue. We want to bring a great variety of artists to NoDa, and be a fun, friendly place to watch a show. We’re going to feature local bands as well, and that excites me. I’ve been hosting a show, ‘The Roundabout’ on Plaza Midwood Community Radio for 6 months and have met a lot of artists who work hard, for little reward, to make Charlotte’s music scene what it is. They deserve the spotlight and I’m glad I can do a little bit to give it to them. I’m just a part of a great team, at work and at home, and it would be unfair for me not to mention Gregg, Aaron, Preston, Amanda, Max and all the other people who have worked so hard to enable me to live out this dream; it’s going to be a long road to get where we all want to be, but their commitment to getting there will make it possible.” So stop by the new bar and check it out. But don’t be a chav and talk to him in his native tongue, with phrases like “Pip pip, cheerio and all that rot” or “Bollocks! It’s ‘ot as bloody ‘ell out there, it is” or “Just one more pint, and Bob’s your uncle!” Because, cor, blimey, ‘e ‘ates that, ‘e does! So be a good bird and treat him like a local. So, now that you know who-what-where-and-why, find out the deeper deets we gathered in the following interview: Where are you from? London Are you single? No, married, to Amanda, and we have a son, Max. What is your sign? Aries If money were not an issue, what would your perfect day off look like? Just a nice peaceful day with Amanda and Max, honestly. I haven’t had many days off recently, so that sounds wonderful. What is your favorite meal in NoDa? If PBR and whiskey isn’t a meal (which it is) then the Ham and Cheese sandwich at Bodega is my go-to. What is the last book you read? Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. It’s a letter from a preacher to his son as the Our June Association Member of the Month, Evan Plante, is a familiar face to the AMOM space. He was recognized as the 2010 Association Member of the Year largely due to his work on NoDa’s 2030 Vision Plan. Since then, Evan has focused on what you’re reading right now – helping to design the NoDa News. Evan’s creativity and willingness to test new waters have helped the NoDa News stay vibrant and fresh. After taking over as the Senior Graphic Design Editor, Evan worked to reformat the style from a newspaper to a tabloid. The new look allows for better arrangement of content and makes room for some badass photo designs. He also decided to forgo his summer Monday evenings to help establish and maintain our NoDa 16” Softball League (check them out on Facebook). Evan is also best friends with Andy Mock, a CATS Project Manager, and has worked tirelessly to ensure the new Blue Line Extension will serve NoDa’s most pressing needs. Finally, he may or may not be partly responsible for something you may or may not see and may or may not use in the neighborhood (figure that one out yourself). With Evan’s enthusiasm and abundant imagination, the NoDa News has a bright future – and one that is sure to be filled with many other exciting changes. He is also extremely good looking and modest. If you would like to see someone recognized for their contributions to the neighborhood, please email your nominations to [email protected]. Remember, the AMOTM must be a dues-paying member of NoDa NBA. preacher contemplates death. I’m not a religious man, but I found the preacher’s totality of faith very touching. What TV show are you embarrassed to watch? Teen Mom. If your life were a movie, what would the title be, and who would play you? Pigpen: The Movie, and I’d be played by Pigpen from Peanuts. I’m serially disorganized and messy, so his dust cloud would work. Do you have any pets? 3 dogs: Penguin, Lincoln and Memphis. What about pet peeves? I cannot abide lateness, my own or others. Name 3 things you can’t live without: Amanda and Max (that’s one), my record player and, sadly, my phone. What is your favorite thing about yourself? I’m happy with myself; overall, I’m in a good place. What song title best describes your mood right now? I have no idea. Do you prefer DOWNTIME or FLAGRANCE? Flagrance, significantly more fun to say. ♫Well, they’re the people that you meet, When you’re walking down the street. In fact, our state’s hungry population could fill the Panthers’ 74,000-seat stadium 22 times. A new social enterprise born and bred in the Queen City aims to put an end to that. PlateShare is a smartphone application for iPhone and Android that lets you round your restaurant bill up to the nearest dollar and donate the change to help feed the hungry. But here is the news for those of you who don’t watch the market. Here we are heading into July 2013 and the real estate market is quite a bit different than it was a year ago. Inventories are shrinking (started to see this in October 2012) and that means that prices of homes are finally on the rise. As a real estate agent, I have found myself in multiple bids on a number of homes, with some homes going for more than asking price. The “deals” are becoming a thing of the past as we move into a market that is becoming favorable for sellers. According to market analysts, many areas are primed for sellers and Charlotte is one of them. As the home buying season (typically the warmer months of the year) continues, those looking for homes may face greater competition from each other. This is good for anyone who wants to sell his or her home and has been waiting for a more favorable market. It is nice to have buyers fight over your house. That being said, I hope that this continues, as it is good for all of us who own homes in NoDa. ASSASSINS CAST (Carolina Actors Studio Theatre) closes its 2013-14 season with “Assassins,” a show that gives new meaning to the phrase “killer musical.” Director Charles LaBorde helms the 21-member cast and leads the audience through the stories of the inner lives of nine people who assassinated or attempted to assassinate a U.S. President. The Story Stephen Sondheim’s smart score and John Weidman’s thought-provoking book examine the stories and motives of the more infamous assassins John Wilkes Booth, John Hinckley, Lee Harvey Oswald and Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, along with the not-so-famous such as Leon Czolgosz, Charles Guiteau and Giuseppe Zangara. A Master’s Last Great Piece Sondheim has always been LaBorde’s favorite musical theatre composer. The first show he saw on Broadway was “A Little Night Music.” He also saw the original Broadway productions of “Sweeney Todd,” “Company,” “Into the Woods” and “Passion.” “Now a quarter century after directing my last Sondheim musical, ‘Follies,’ I find myself with the opportunity to direct his ‘Assassins,’ which I consider the master’s last great piece for the theatre and the one Sondheim himself says he would not change one word or note of,” says LaBorde. “The show is a challenge from beginning to end -- the theme, walking the taste tightrope, and the impossibly difficult music.” He credits the incomparable skills of Marty Gregory as music director and the talented cast that she and this material have attracted to the piece. “To perform a play about the gateway to hell,” Laborde says. “We have been lucky to assemble an ensemble of angelic singers and actors.” The Assassins (in order of appearance) • • • • • • • • • Leon Czolgosz, assassin of William McKinley: Scott Reynolds John Hinckley, attempted assassin of Ronald Reagan: William Daniel Hoffman Charles Guiteau, assassin of James Garfield: Daniel O’Sullivan Giuseppe Zangara, attempted assassin of Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Alex Gagne Samuel Byck, attempted assassin of Richard Nixon: Chris Sepulveda Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, attempted assassin of Gerald Ford: Katie Riley Sarah Jane Moore, attempted assassin of Gerald Ford: Meredith Owen John Wilkes Booth, assassin of Abraham Lincoln: Samuel Crawford Lee Harvey Oswald, assassin of John Fitzgerald Kennedy: Joshua Lucero The Details • When: Through July 13. What many people don’t know is how owner Chris Ingram came up with the name for his bar. As it turns out, JackBeagle was the name of his dog when he moved to NoDa in 2002. “People used to think his name was Jack as in ‘Jack the beagle,’ but his name was simply JackBeagle,” said Chris. One day when he was out driving, Chris found JackBeagle wandering the side of the road. He picked up the wayward pup hoping to find him a home. After a couple days of feeding and taking care of him (alongside his other dog Crockett) Chris thought, “I am probably going to keep him, and as I’m saying it to myself, JackBeagle sits straight up like a prairie dog. As soon as he did that, I thought ‘Sold!’ you are now Crockett’s brother.’” To his surprise, the once scrawny JackBeagle grew into a sixty pound dog. Chris describes, “He wasn’t fat; he was just a diesel beagle mixed with something.” When people would remark on the unusual size of JackBeagle, Chris would regale them with the tale of him being the last of the Giant Beagles. As Chris, JackBeagle and Crockett would walk around the neighborhood, JackBeagle became somewhat of a ladies’ dog. “Anytime we got near women, he would sit up as straight as an arrow with his tail behind him for support.” Chris always dreamed of opening a bar in JackBeagle’s honor, so when the current location became available for rent, he jumped at the opportunity. One of his early ideas was for JackBeagle to roam the bar and customers get a free shot when he sat up prairie dog style near them. Unfortunately, JackBeagle passed away before the bar opened in December of 2010. If you hear someone comment they own a Giant Beagle, just remember, it is impossible because JackBeagle was the last of the breed. If you, or someone you know, have any interesting stories you would like to share with Back in the Day, we want to hear them.. Reach us at nodahistory@ gmail.com. It’s Ozone Season Y’all What Can We Do? by Emily Burns Air pollution can harm people’s health and damage the environment. Air pollution can lead to breathing problems such as asthma and emphysema. Too much exposure to pollution during childhood can permanently reduce lung function. Some types of air pollution also can cause heart problems. Air pollution can harm you even if you can’t see it or smell it. It also can hurt trees and wildlife, cause haze that blocks scenic views, and contribute to water pollution and climate change. The two biggest air quality problems in North Carolina, and specifically in Mecklenburg County, are ground-level and particle pollution. Both pollutants are caused mainly by emissions from cars and trucks, and from the coal-burning power plants that supply most of our electricity. Ozone “season” occurs when the days are warm and long, generally early May to the end of October in North Carolina. Sunlight is needed to start the chemical reaction that forms ozone and heat makes that ozone creating reaction more efficient. Ozone levels are at their highest mid-afternoon through the evening. Because of this it is best to exercise in the mornings on ozone action since ozone does not usually reach unhealthy levels until the afternoon (when it is hottest). Mecklenburg County Air Quality post ozone forecast on their website, airquality.charmeck.org/ and it is usually included in local media weather reports. When ozone levels are predicted to be in an unhealthy range an Ozone Action Day will be declared. Folks who are sensitive to ozone (children, people with respiratory issues, and older adults) will be encouraged to be careful while they are outside and we are all asked to take some additional easy steps to reduce air pollution and ground level ozone: • • Refuel cars and trucks after dusk, when emissions are less likely to produce ozone. Delay using gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment until air quality is healthy again. • Delay using household, workshop, and garden chemicals until air quality is healthy again. Even on Non-ozone Action Days there are still things that we can do to keep the air cleaner: • Conserve energy – at home, at work, everywhere. Turn off lights you are not using. • Carpool or take public transit to your destinations if possible. • Limit engine idling. • Combine errands to reduce vehicle trips. Please try to incorporate these ozone reduction steps into your daily routine during ozone season. We will all breathe easier.
