Sossusvlei, Namibia
Namibia Tourism Board arrives in
Toronto to share destination news
by Cindy Sosroutomo
TORONTO – The chilly temps in Toronto momentarily lifted recently
when the Namibia Tourism Board arrived to showcase some of its most
popular tours and travel products.
Several local tour operators and travel companies took part in the media
marketplace, all of which praised the
destination for being unlike any other
safari destination in Africa.
According to Ndapona Schleberger
of the Namibia Tourism Board, safety
and infrastructure are two reasons
why Namibia differs. The country is so
safe and easy to navigate that self-drive
touring has become all the rage. More
and more adventurous travellers are
renting their own safari vehicles and
hitting the open road and straight towards national parks.
Recently ranked sixth in The New
York Times’ ’52 Places To Go in 2014’
list, Namibia is known for its wide
range of experiences and conservancy
efforts. It’s home to the largest freeroaming population of black rhinoceros, the world’s tallest sand dunes
and new self-drive routes to encourage wider exploration of the country.
It’s also the only country in the world
to have its entire coastline designated
a national park, and almost half of its
land protected under the country’s
pioneering conservancy initiative.
In terms of new hotels and renovations, Namibia has plenty to be excited
about. The De Duine Hotel, a historical
landmark in Henties Bay, will receive
a $22 million facelift featuring apartments for locals to purchase as well
as a 56-room hotel. The new, modern
design will be smart but casual, with a
chic décor. Guests will have easy access
to the beach using a new pedestrian
ramp, while bars, pools, a lawn, spa,
Jacuzzi, playground and restaurant will
also be part of the development.
Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp, a
Wilderness Safaris property, has just
opened at the confluence of two
tributaries of the Hoanib River in the
northern part of the private Palmwag
Concession. Its location straddles both
the Palmwag area and the iconic Skeleton Coast National Park, in one of the
most remote areas of the Kaokoveld.
Exclusivity is taken a step further as
the camp is only accessible by light aircraft. It features only seven twin-bedded tents and one family unit, each
comprising stylish en-suite bedrooms
with shaded outdoor decks.
Popa Falls Camp reopened last November after being closed for refurbishment since March 2013. Situated on the
Kavango River, this Namibia Wildlife
Resorts property features 10 spacious
chalets, three family/double units, four
luxury units and 10 campsites. A spacious three-room house can be rented
out to large families, groups or made

available to tour operator guides and
drivers. The new restaurant has a fully
equipped kitchen and full-service bar,
while the river jetty now boasts a bar
facility ideal for sundowners. Also new
is a conference facility that can accommodate up to 100 people.
Pelican Point Lodge recently opened
near Walvis Bay, providing unique accommodations on Namibia’s coastline
where the desert sand dunes meet the
Atlantic Ocean. Its nine suites located
at the foot of a working lighthouse offer contemporary comfort, with private
decks from where guests can watch
seals and dolphins playing in the waves.
Lastly, Strand Hotel, Swakopmund
will be redeveloped into a new fourstar hotel on Namibia’s coast in April
2015. Upon completion, it will boast
135 rooms, three restaurants, three
bars, a conference centre, microbrewery, a deli shop, beach kiosk as

well as a public spa and fitness centre
with heated swimming pool.
Travellers can get to Namibia easier
now that Air Namibia has announced
a new interline agreement with Lufthansa. This allows for seamless travel to
Windhoek with just one stop in Frankfurt from North American destinations
served by the German airline. To benefit from this new agreement, bookings
must be made with Lufthansa through
Windhoek (WDH). Passengers transfer
onto Air Namibia’s new Airbus A330-200
in Frankfurt, which features a two-class
cabin layout that seats 244 passengers
(30 in business and 214 in economy).
Packages to Namibia are bountiful,
with Goway’s 11-day ‘Namibian Discovery’ leading the way. Priced from
$2,953 per person, double occupancy,
this roundtrip package includes highlights like Etosha National Park, Damaraland, Swakopmund and Sossusvlei.
Price includes 10 nights’ accommodation with private facilities, 10 breakfasts and seven dinners, most sightseeing activities, accommodation taxes,
park entrance and conservation fees,
hotel porterage and all transportation
in air-conditioned mini or midi-buses.
Price does not include international
airfare, air taxes, unspecified meals
and activities and gratuities. Departures are set for July 14, Aug. 18, Sept. 8
and 22, Oct. 20 and Nov. 17.
Also available is Big Five’s ‘Namibia —
Desert & Beyond’ package from its Enrichment Series — Livingstone Collection. This package explores the oldest
desert in the world — the Namib Desert — and scales some of the world’s
highest freestanding sand dunes at Sossusvlei. Guests will also visit Twyfelfontein, a Stone Age site known for some
2,500 ancient petroglyphs, and explore
Etosha National Park during a game
viewing safari. Other highlights include
a visit to Okonjima, home of the AfriCat Foundation, where guests can track
the big cats on foot and learn about
cheetah welfare.
This package is priced from $14,328
per person, double occupancy, land
only, and includes daily accommodations, hotel taxes and service charges,
most meals, all hotel/airport transfers,
ground transportation in mini buses
and/or safari vehicles, all sightseeing,
game viewing, entrance and park fees,
pre-tour planning materials, Big Five’s
24-hour White Glove Service guest
assistance and Big Five’s Complimentary Trip Interruption Insurance (not
intended to replace comprehensive
travel insurance). This package is valid
through Dec. 15, 2014.

Air Mauritius and
Air France broaden
the scope of their
collaboration
Earlier this year, Air France-KLM and Air
Mauritius signed an agreement that reinforces and broadens the scope of their existing collaboration. Signed by Alexandre
de Juniac, Chairman and Managing Director of Air France-KLM, and Andre Viljoen,
Chief Executive Officer of Air Mauritius,
the agreement provides for the continuity of the joint Air Mauritius-Air France
code share operations between ParisCharles de Gaulle and Sir Seewoosagur
Ramgoolam Airport-Mauritius.
During Northern Winter 2013/14,
the two airlines will offer up to 16 flights
a week on the route. Furthermore, Air
Mauritius customers have the possibility
to connect beyond Charles de Gaulle to
European destinations on Air France operated flights. Similarly, Air France customers are able to connect to Reunion on Air
Mauritius operated flights.
The scope of the agreement has
been broadened to cover the sharing of
knowledge in several areas of the business, including Commercial Operations,
Revenue Management, Cost Management, Procurement, Maintenance and
Fuel Conservation, among others.
“The agreement signed is in line with
the historical presence of Air France
in Mauritius, which it has been serving without interruption since 1946.
We have reinforced our collaboration
namely by agreeing to share knowledge
in various key areas for Air Mauritius.
By joining forces on the Paris-Mauritius
route, we are always offering more frequencies and opportunities for connections, namely from our powerful hub in
Paris Charles de Gaulle for the benefit
of all our customers,” said de Juniac.
Since Nov. 1, 2012, customers can
benefit from both the Air Mauritius
and Air France loyalty programs, Flying Blue and Kestrelflyer. Members of
these programs can earn Miles on the
loyalty program of Air France or that
of Air Mauritius between Paris and
Mauritius, Reunion and Mauritius as
well as European destinations served
by Air France from the Paris-Charles

Douro river in Porto, Portugal
ATOURZ’s ‘Scenic Douro River Cruise’
is the perfect choice for all travellers
by Cindy Sosroutomo
There’s no better way to see the sights
in Europe than by river cruise, something ATOURZ can personally attest
to. As floating hotels, river cruise
ships are able to venture into smaller,
off-the-beaten path towns and cities and allow passengers to travel in
comfort without ever having to unpack and repack. And as ATOURZ’s
eight-day ‘Scenic Douro River Cruise’
proves, this type of travel is ideal for
just about anyone.
“There’s a reason why river cruising is gaining in popularity,” said Elena
Prountzopoulos, Head of Tour Operations at ATOURZ. “Not only is it a more
intimate and personable way to travel,
it’s also a highly romantic and luxurious
way to explore some of Europe’s most
hidden jewels. Whether clients are 50plus, honeymooners or multi-generational, river cruising offers something
for everyone.”
The ‘Scenic Douro River Cruise’ starts
in Porto, Portugal where passengers
will board the MS Douro Spirit Ship for
a welcome cocktail and dinner. From
there, the ship sails to Régua for some
Port wine tasting and an optional tour
of Lamego before heading to Pinhão.
Passengers will awake to find themselves in Vega Terron, Spain where they
can enjoy an optional tour to Figueira
de Castelo Rodrigo.
The latter half of the voyage will sail
to Vega Terron, Barca d’Alva and Entreos-Rios with highlights like an optional
tour to Salamanca with Spanish lunch
and flamenco show, Portuguese barbecue dinner onboard, dinner at Quinta
da Avessada with drinks included,
lunch at the Alpendurada Monastery,
an optional tour to Porto city with a
visit to a wine lodge, and a special farewell dinner onboard.
Priced from $1,559 per person, double occupancy with departures on July
9, 16, 23 and 30, ‘Scenic Douro River
Cruise’ includes seven nights’ accommodation, seven breakfasts, six lunches
and seven dinners, and entertainment/
activities as per itinerary.

DHTour of Burlington, the Canadian

popular ‘Corners of Cornwall’ is sold

of its eclectic tours throughout the
U.K. and Europe, including the popular

Starwood anticipates
huge growth in North
America this year
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. is expecting another year of
robust growth in North America with
approximately 30 new hotels slated to
open by year’s end. This growth will
be driven by the rapid proliferation of
its Four Points by Sheraton and Aloft
brands and a surge in conversions
across several of its brands, including
Le Méridien, which is experiencing
strong development momentum.
In 2013, Starwood opened 33 new
hotels and signed 52 new hotel deals
in North America, up 27% over sign-
ings of the previous year and the
most signed since before the global
economic crisis.
The company’s ‘Specialty Select’
brands – Four Points by Sheraton,
Aloft and Element – are leading Starwood’s growth in North America and
account for approximately 75% of
new hotel openings in the region in
2014. As a group, these brands have
grown 80% globally since 2008 and
are on track to surpass 200 hotels in
North America this year.
Four Points by Sheraton will open
12 new hotels in North America this
year, including the first Four Points in
Charleston, West Virginia; Phoenix, Arizona; and Surrey, British Columbia; as
well as its second in Nashville, Tennessee and the fourth in Manhattan. Boasting the second largest global pipeline
among all of its Starwood brands, Four
Points by Sheraton will open its 200th
hotel worldwide this year as it nears its
125th milestone in North America.
The Aloft brand will surpass 60 hotels in North America in 2014 after
signing 16 new hotel deals in the region
last year. The brand will enter numerous new markets with eight new hotels
in North America, including two more
adaptive re-use projects.
Element, Starwood’s eco-wise
brand, is picking up momentum with
three openings planned for North
America this year in Harrison, New
Jersey; Hanover, New Hampshire; and
Fargo, North Dakota; plus its first in
Europe in Frankfurt, Germany. Element will open its 15th hotel in North
America in 2015 including its first in
Orlando, second in Miami and second in Canada (Vancouver).

TORONTO — Sunwing’s first aircraft with
the fuel efficiency Split Scimitar Winglets
designed by Aviation Partners Boeing is officially in service.
This technology improves performance
of the aircraft and decreases fuel burn by
approximately 7% over the same aircraft
with no Winglets.
Sunwing is the first airline in Canada and
the second in the world to commercially
fly the second generation Split Scimitar
Blended Winglets and will retrofit its entire fleet of Boeing 737-800s with this new
technology by the end of May.
“We feel we have a responsibility as a
market leader in Canada to continue investing in technology which reduces our
environmental impact,” says Mark Wil-
liams, President of Sunwing Airlines. “Sunwing has the lowest CO2 emissions per
seat mile of any major airline in Canada
and this new initiative will lower our emissions even further.”

Lufthansa unveils
new Premium
Economy Class with
up to 50% more room
BERLIN — The ITB 2014 in Berlin was the
scene of a world premiere on its opening
day: Lufthansa’s new Premium Economy
Class was presented to industry experts.
The new travel class can be booked
from May onwards and will be available
from November 2014, initially on the
Boeing 747-8. The new seats will gradually be fitted on the entire long-haul
fleet within 12 months.
“Our Premium Economy Class will
create a completely new travel experience that combines affordability with
greater comfort. The seats offer up to
50% more room than Economy Class
and will position us in a premium segment within the international competitive environment,” said Jens Bischof, the
Member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board in charge of Sales, Product
and Marketing, during a presentation
at the Lufthansa booth in hall 25.
The new product will enable Lufthansa
to meet the requirements of many business and private passengers who travel
with other airlines in a similar travel class
or who fly Economy Class due to travel
specifications. Following the introduction of its new full-flat Business Class,
Lufthansa created a much wider gap between Economy and Business Class. As a
result, there is now room for its new Premium Economy Class, which offers considerably more space and comfort, as well

approximately 3.9 inches of more room

own wide armrest and a centre console
between the seats. The back rest can be
reclined further and a seat pitch of 38

As a result, passengers have approximately one-and-a-half times as much

With a baggage allowance of two
items weighing up to 50lb each, passengers can take twice as much free luggage
with them compared to Economy Class.
For an extra 25 euros, passengers can
also enjoy the comfort of the Lufthansa
Business Lounges before their departure.
Previously, lounges were only open to
status customers and were otherwise
unavailable on a pay-to-enter basis.
Check-in and boarding procedures,
as well as hand luggage regulations, are
the same as in Economy Class.
An enhanced service awaits Premium
Economy passengers onboard: They are
greeted with a welcome drink and will

is closer to Economy Class than Business
Class in terms of its average prices.
The move also means that Lufthansa
is introducing a completely new travel
class for the first time in 35 years.
“The design and features of the new seat
in particular are based on extensive passenger surveys and workshops with sales
partners – a process that has been successfully used at Lufthansa. Following the
upgrade of our First and Business Class, the
installation of 3,600 seats on all 106 of our
long-haul aircraft in just one year will mean
another step towards becoming a five-star
airline,” continued Bischof. “We expect to
see more than 1.5 million passengers per
year in our new Premium Economy Class.”
The new seats were designed in partnership with the company müller/romca
Industrial Design in Kiel and produced by
the seat manufacturer ZIM Flugsitz near
Lake Constance. Depending on the aircraft type, they are up to 1.2 inches wider
and provide greater privacy, as well as
find their own water bottle, as well as
a high-quality amenity kit with practical travel accessories at their seat. Meals
are presented on menus commensurate
with the new travel class and served on
porcelain tableware.
Passengers can navigate the extensive
inflight entertainment program using
their own touchscreen monitor on the
seat in front of them. This can also be
done using a remote control, which serves
as a controller for video games as well.
The screens are 11 to 12 inches, which
make them at least 2 inches bigger than
the screens in Economy Class, depending
on the aircraft type. A wide selection of
magazines and newspapers complete the
range of entertainment offered onboard.
Lufthansa Premium Economy Class is
located within the cabin as a clearly identifiable, separate compartment between
Business and Economy Class. It has a highquality design and contains between 21
and 52 seats, depending on the aircraft
type. Installation of the new travel class,

Trulli houses with painted symbols on the conical roofs in Alberobello
With ‘sassi’ and
‘trulli’, Basilicata
and Puglia reward
clients heading to
Italy’s deep south
By Patrick Dineen
MATERA, Italy — Basilicata and Puglia
are two of Italy’s historic but relatively
undiscovered regions with spectacular
UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
But since they are located at the very
end of the Italian boot – Basilicata on
the arch and Puglia on the heel – many
foreign visitors don’t go near them.
This has its upside especially for those
who have braved the throngs along the
canals of Venice, the museums of Florence
and the ancient and Baroque sites of Rome.
Transat Holidays has made it easier
to explore the region with an escorted

ian Sun – Sassi and Trulli’ in conjunction with Air Transat flights to Rome.
The name of the tour features two
of the region’s unique attractions – the
sassi in Basilicata’s Matera and the trulli
in Alberobello in Puglia, both World
Heritage Sites.
The Matera region has been inhabited
since the Palaeolithic period and villages
appeared when agriculture began after
the last Ice Age. It is considered the longest
continually occupied spot on the planet.
People have been living in caves or sassi
since then and the landscape still looks so
ancient that Matera attracts moviemakers such as Mel Gibson who made his The
Passion of the Christ here as the city is a
perfect stand-in for the ancient Holy Land.
People still lived in the sassi until
after the Second World War when authorities cleared them because of the
lack of sanitation.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
this formerly problematic area is thriving with the caves home to renovated
residences as well as elegant hotels and
restaurants.
Highlights include old churches that
have been carved into the rock and
the Peasant Culture Museum.
The more modern part of Matera,
on a plateau overlooking the sassi, is attractive in its own right with open piazzas, fountains and shops.
The trulli, on the other hand, are round,
white, limestone dwellings found in the
southern region of Puglia made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected
from neighbouring fields and featuring
pyramidal, domed or conical roofs.
The best place to see them is Alberobello in Puglia, one of the best-preserved and most homogeneous urban
areas of this type in Europe. Now shops,
restaurants and hotels are located in
these structures that are examples of
prehistoric building techniques.
The Transat Holidays tour starts in
Rome for two nights and then heads
south for two nights in Sorrento with
visits to Pompeii, Capri and Amalfi.

Overlooking the Bay of Naples, Sorrento has a range of luxury hotels and is
linked to the former maritime republic of
Amalfi by the narrow road with spectacular scenery, known as the Amalfi Drive.
The tour continues with a visit to Matera and two nights in Alberobello. In addition to touring the trulli, the tour visits
Lecce, a Baroque gem near the southern
tip of Italy’s east coast. The city of some
95,000 is often called the Florence of the
South because of its architectural splendor.
Another stop renowned for its architecture is Ostuni, perched on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea and known as
the White City because of its dazzling
white-washed buildings.
The tour returns to Campania for one
night in Amalfi, a maritime powerhouse
in medieval times and now home to small
squares and alleyways, the Arsenal where
ships were built and a Norman cathedral.
There is a final night in Rome before
the flight back to Canada.
The eight-night tour has departures
June 26, July 24, Aug. 14, Sept. 11, 25
and Oct. 9 with prices, including Early
Booking savings, ranging from $2,099
to $2,199 including transatlantic flight.

Further underscoring its long-term

in Europe, maintaining the company’s
2007 deal signing pace. The company
opened seven hotels in Europe last year,
adding approximately 1,200 rooms in
five countries while expanding its footprint across the continent with 80% of
this growth in developing markets.
In addition to Turkey, Starwood is
maintaining strong growth momentum
in Russia and the CIS countries where
it is poised to triple its portfolio over

The airline flew 1.5 million guests in February, a year-over-year increase of 8.0% or
approximately 114,000 additional guests.
“We are pleased with the strong traffic
growth, achieving our second-highest February load factor in WestJet’s history,” said
WestJet President and CEO Gregg Saretsky.

ROUND UP
The Cromwell brings boutique
luxury to the Las Vegas Strip
The Cromwell, the new Las Vegas hotel, is set to welcome its
first guests on May 21.
With a prime location on one of the busiest intersections
of the Las Vegas Strip – one that welcomes more than 20 million passersby each year – The Cromwell Hotel and Casino
will be the Strip’s first luxury boutique hotel and casino, with
an intimate 188 rooms and suites as well as the first-ever restaurant by Giada De Laurentiis, a rooftop pool and day and
nightlife venues by Victor Drai. The Cromwell is owned and
operated by Caesars Entertainment.
King Room at The Cromwell Hotel and Casino
For dining, Giada De Laurentiis’ self-titled restaurant,
GIADA, will greet guests with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, al fresco dining and an exhibition kitchen showcasing fresh pastas being made daily by hand and a signature
antipasto bar – a first for Italian eateries on the Strip. Located
on the second story of the boutique hotel, GIADA can accommodate 260 guests and showcases automatic retractable windows boasting prime views of the Bellagio fountains,
Caesars Palace and Bally’s Grand Bazaar Shops.
“The Cromwell will bring an exclusive experience to the
Las Vegas Strip as a luxury lifestyle boutique hotel focusing
on hospitality, amenities and personalized service,” said Karie Hall, general manager of The Cromwell. “Our partners
Giada De Laurentiis and Victor Drai will inspire 360-degree
day life, nightlife and dining experiences that you won’t find
anywhere else in Las Vegas.”
Vermont’s Stowe plans new
family-friendly facilities
From the moment guests enter from the Porte Cochere, “a
boutique hotel experience that blends traditional elements
with Parisian flare and whimsical, modern details awaits”. The
Cromwell will blend vintage with modern, drawing inspiration from the Coste Hotel in Paris with black Parisian-style
awnings and gold fixtures adorning the windows.
The hotel lobby is reminiscent of a parlor from the past;
accessories and bookshelves adorned with leather bound
books clad the walls.
Some 169 hotel rooms are reminiscent of Parisian loft-style
apartments with distressed hardwood flooring and vintage
luggage motif furnishings.
34 TRAVELWEEK March 13, 2014
