Principal’s Message
Principal: Karen Brown
Thank you to everyone for the huge amount of support we had at our Sports Day on Monday. Everyone had a wonderful time and the
weather was perfect. A big thank you to Miss Radicke for all her preparations and planning that led to such a successful day. It was a
wonderful event.
At the end of this week we will be saying goodbye to our Middle School Deputy, Mr Maher, who will be taking up a new appointment as
Deputy Principal at Mudgeeraba State School. We wish him all the very best for the future and would like to thank him for his
commitment to his role over the years and for all he has done here at Mabel Park State School. He will be missed by all of us.
We would like to welcome a new member of staff to our Teaching Team. We welcome Ms Deb McNamara who will be our Year 2 (2GI)
teacher until the end of Term 3. Ms McNamara is replacing Ms Imrani who will be on maternity leave awaiting the birth of her second
baby. We wish Ms Imrani well and she will be returning to us soon.
Ms Poole (PNP) married recently and on her return she will be known as Mrs Mendoza. All reports say that she was a beautiful bride
and the day went off without a hitch. It’s lovely to have her back at school after her honeymoon. Ms Conomos (3CC) will be getting
married during the holidays and when she returns she will remain as Ms Conomos. We wish Ms Conomos all the very best for her
special day.
A big congratulations to Ms Carpenter from 2FC for achieving a permanent position here at Mabel Park State School. We are very happy
to retain such quality teachers on our staff.
A thought for us all during the holidays:
Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going
back and forth between the surf's edge and the beach. Back and forth this person went. As the man approached, he could see that there
were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide.
The man was stuck by the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. As he
approached, the person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf.
As he came up to the person, he said: "You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly
make a difference." The person looked at the man. He then stooped down and pick up one more starfish and threw it back into the
ocean. He turned back to the man and said:
"It sure made a difference to that one!"

Mabel Park State School closes for the winter break this Friday (26 June) at 2.40pm, and we re-open on Monday 13 July.
Please enjoy your much deserved holiday break and if you live nearby, keep an eye on our wonderful school. The School Watch number

school grounds will remain out of bounds for the entire break, please enjoy the many public spaces available to you during this time.

Deadly Choices
As many of you will be aware, Deadly Choices in partnership with Brisbane Broncos and in conjunction with the Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander Child Health Service (ATSICHS) have been conducting health checks for our Indigenous students over the last three terms.
Mrs Brown, Ms Smith and I were all invited to attend the announcement of a three-year funding partnership with the Broncos to
support Indigenous Queenslanders to make healthy lifestyle choices. The Health Minister, Mr Cameron Dick, along with Ex-Broncos
players, Steve Renouf and Scott Prince explained that this was the first time the Deadly Choices Brisbane Broncos Partnership would be
expanded to Cape York, Mt Isa, Central Qld, Wide Bay, Mackay and Far South West. This is great news for regional Queensland. We are
lucky to have the support of ATSICHS here at Mabel Park and we look forward to continuing our Health Checks on site!
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia each July (5-12 July) to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year the theme for NAIDOC is ‘We all Stand on Sacred Ground’. The theme highlights Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea. The theme is an opportunity to pay respects
to country; honour those who work tirelessly on preserving land, sea and culture and to share the stories of many sites of significance
or sacred places with the nation. For more information in regards to NAIDOC week, visit the official NAIDOC website:

At Mabel Park, we will be celebrating NAIDOC week next term in week 3. This year we will be holding our annual NAIDOC parade on
Tuesday 28 July in conjunction with Mabel Park State High School and we will also be hosting our third NAIDOC Expo on Friday 31 July.
Our Community Education Counselor, Leanne Smith and a dedicated team of volunteers have begun preparations for our Expo. I look
forward to seeing you all at our parade and Expo.

June/July holidays
Hopefully these holidays will be an opportunity for students to relax and refresh before the commencement of Term 3. If
parents/carers are lucky enough to have holidays at the same time, enjoy the break with your children, and stay safe.
Thank you and good bye
As previously advertised, my time as Deputy Principal at Mabel Park State School finishes at the end of this term. After the break, I will
commence duties at Mudgeeraba State School. I gained the position at Mabel Park halfway through 2010 and leave halfway through
2015. During my 5 years, I have worked with some wonderful staff and some lovely children. I am thankful for the support I have
received from the community. Best of luck to everyone at Mabel Park! Thank you and good bye.

Understanding Your Child’s Report Card
For Semester 1 report cards, teachers are evaluating student work based on our Curriculum into the Classroom (C2C) units and
assessment tasks from Term 1 and 2 in English, Maths, Science, and History. C2C units are in ongoing review and adjustment, based on
feedback from teachers. Report card results in English, Maths, Science, and History this semester are based on the content descriptors
and year level Achievement Standards from the Australian Curriculum, and as such may not be reliably compared to previous years’
results.

Over recent years, parents, students and teachers across Queensland are gradually becoming more familiar with a 5-point scale (e.g. AE) process for reporting in all schools. The system schools are using refers to attainment standards called “benchmarks of achievement”
or “criteria.” So what makes an “A”, “B”, “C” etc is predetermined by a scale of achievement. Any student who shows evidence of
meeting a particular level, deserves that benchmark grade.
This is what you could consider the new difference for a “C” really means:
A “C” means that the student has met the criteria for a learner to be at the appropriate age level.
A “C” means that the student is doing everything required at their Year Level at school. The best description is to say that a “C”
means that the student’s academic development is exactly where it needs to be.
That means attaining a “C” for Achievement means you are ON TARGET for your age level!
With all of this in mind, we must accept that it may be harder to get an “A” or “B”. These grades are not awarded simply to the top
students in the class.
Sneaking in Learning over the Holidays
•Let children read ingredients from recipes while you bake together. It's a great way for them to learn measurements and temperatures.
•Set aside time for kids to "show off" their new reading skills to visiting relatives. Children love being the focus of attention, and
grandparents are usually more than willing to see their progress.
•Grab a magazine from the news agent that interests your child
•Find books that focus on an interest your child has. For example if they love bikes, find a book on Lance Armstrong, or a children's
book that includes a bicycle adventure. There are books out there to suit every interest under the sun – it just takes a little browsing.

•Use the winter break to strengthen your child’s vocabulary. This is a perfect time to start a treasure chest of words, by having your
child look up new words, then write the word and definition on 3×5 cards. Use the word in a sentence or have them write a story based
on the word. This exercise will reinforce reading comprehension and writing skills
•Give your child an opportunity to appreciate the arts by attending free events like concerts or plays during the holidays, or stop by a
local museum.

Our annual Sports Day Carnival was held on Monday 22 June. Thank you to the parents and carers who came to watch and support the
students in the activities. The winning house and age champions from the 10, 11 & 12 Years age group will be announced on parade
Monday 20 July.
Logan District Track & Field trials
Selected students in the 10 Years (Born 2005), 11 Years (Born 2004) and the 12 Years (Born 2003) have qualified to represent our school
at the Logan District Track & Field trials to be held at John Paul College on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 July. All permission notes
and payment are due no later than Monday 13 July.

Chaplaincy News
On Saturday 20 June Scripture Union Queensland held the Logan Chaplaincy Lighthouse
Fundraising Dinner showcasing and supporting the work of chaplaincy in Logan schools.
Scripture Union Queensland were very grateful to be supported on the night from
representatives from Logan's best School - Mabel Park SS. Guests at our table included
representatives from Mabel Park State School, Hosanna Logan City, RAMS Home Loans
Capalaba and the Hope Centre. Many thanks to our school principal Karen Brown for making
this possible. Just a reminder that my role in the school is to care for the school community.
My work days are Monday, Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Always happy to chat if needed. Have a
