We open our 30th year celebration
of The Mabel Mercer Foundation on Tuesday, October
13th, with favorites Amanda McBroom, Christine Andreas
and Allan Harris. As Rose Hall is being renovated, we’ll
be returning to The Town Hall where
our first Cabaret Convention was held
in 1989. Appropriately, then, on our
second night, Wednesday October
14th, Andrea Marcovicci and Jeff
Harnar are co-hosting an evening called
“Sentimental Journey.” Though it’s a
show about the love songs of WWII, the
title also recognizes the longstanding
relationship The Foundation has enjoyed
with The Town Hall. Last spring, at
that esteemed venue, we produced a
memorial concert celebrating the career
of cabaret legend Julie Wilson. We’ll also
recall how our founder Donald Smith
organized several star-studded events
to save The Town Hall in the 70s and 80s.
On Thursday, October 15th, Karen Mason
hosts an evening devoted to the dynamic
writing team of John Kander and Fred
Ebb with Broadway and cabaret stars
Brent Barrett, Amra-Faye Wright, Sally
Mayes, Anita Gillette, Penny Fuller,
Steve Ross, Bobby Creighton, and
Sandy Stewart. You’ll be serenaded to the melodies of
Vernon Duke in the first half of our final evening on Friday,
October 16th. Duke gave us such standards as “April In
Paris,” “Autumn In New York,” and “Taking a Chance On
Love.” The second half of the evening will be devoted to the
glorious music of Marvin Hamlisch and will spotlight some
of his favorite interpreters such as Carol Woods, Valerie
Lemon, Eric Michael Gillett, and our dazzling hostess Klea
Blackhurst. So it’s “back to the future” at The Town Hall,
where our namesake Mabel Mercer held court with Bobby
Short in those historic concerts in the 60s.
Thanks for the Memory,
