Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell
Opens To Patients
Our family, friends and neighbors now have access to the finest health care at their doorsteps.
Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell opened its doors to patients on November 6.
The new, state-of-art, Capital Health Medical
Center – Hopewell officially opened for
business on Sunday, November 6 when a fleet
of ambulances moved close to 70 patients
from the Mercer campus to the new facility.
The new hospital features advanced medical
services in a non-traditional hospital setting
that incorporates patient-friendly design with
unique, environmentally conscious features.
High level, specialized medical services such
as neurosciences, digestive health, advanced
orthopedic services, cancer, CyberKnife®
radiosurgery, daVinci® robotic surgery,
reconstructive surgery, and specialized
pediatric emergency care are combined with
amenities such as an on-site spa, coffee kiosk,
cyber café, bistro and boutique gift shops.
“From two hospitals that merged to stay viable,
a new Capital Health has emerged and with it
the finest medical facility available. This new
CAPITAL HEALTH FOUNDATION
medical center features sophisticated technology and medical services, highly skilled
physicians and clinicians, and amenities that
completely alter the experience of being in,
or visiting, a hospital,” said Al Maghazehe,
President and CEO, Capital Health.
Contributing toward the advancement of
Capital Health’s vision of being a regional
health care destination are the many individuals,
corporations, foundations and organizations
that have pledged their support of The
Campaign for Capital Health. Their names
are included in the insert to this newsletter.
Additionally, there are some special donor
profiles included in this edition. Read about
how their leadership support helped to
catapult the campaign to new levels.
The Campaign for Capital Health began in
the quiet phase in 2007. By the time we had
gone public in 2010, over $17 million had
been committed to the effort. And, we are
proud to report that the campaign total now
stands at $21.3 million.
Our philanthropic success has been made
possible in part due to the leadership of a
dedicated Board of Directors, but mostly due
to the generosity of friends and family like
you. We heartedly extend our appreciation
to those of you who have pledged to The
Campaign for Capital Health to date.
However, Capital Health would not be able to
deliver exceptional care without the support
of the people it serves. Whether you are a
patient, a neighbor, an employee or a physician,
if you haven’t supported the campaign yet,
we encourage you to join your friends and
colleagues in helping to ensure continued
enhancement of the high quality health care
that we all want and deserve.

A Very “Resourceful” Gentleman
He’s given his time as a board
member and his financial resources to
The Campaign for Capital Health.
Joseph R. Jingoli, Sr. is a man of few words,
but a gentleman of commitment
and dedication to his work, his
family and to Capital Health.
In 2001, he sold the construction company
to his sons and the real estate development
to his daughters. While his children continue
his business legacy, he remains active in
the daily operations of his businesses.
Joe Jingoli was born in Trenton
and has been a lifelong Mercer
County resident. In 1970, he
expanded Joseph Jingoli and Son
Inc. and began real estate
development. Later, he formed JJS
Construction Management and
secured projects like the Mercer
County Courthouse, Mercer Oaks
Golf Course and Clubhouse and
the Ewing Township Municipal
Police Facility.
Joe has been involved in Capital Health
leadership for close to 20 years, serving on
the Associate Board of Helene Fuld Medical
Center, the Board of Governors of Helene
Fuld Healthcare and the Capital Health
System Board of Directors. He’s
seen the hospital in both hardship
and gain. And when it came time
to build a new, state-of-the-art
hospital in Hopewell, he knew he
didn’t want to miss out on the
opportunity to be a part of this
memorable period in Capital
Health history.
In 2008, Joe made a leadership
pledge to the Campaign for
Capital Health. In recognition
of his generosity, the Joseph R.
Jingoli, Sr. Resource Center has
been named in his honor.
IBEW Local Union 269 Makes a $100,000 Pledge To Capital
Health Foundation
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 269 has made a leadership gift of $100,000 to
The Campaign for Capital Health.
The gift is dedicated to the hospital’s $530
million expansion project that includes a new,
state-of-the-art hospital in Hopewell Township.
“The new hospital project put a lot of our
guys to work”, said IBEW Local 269 business
manager, Stephen Aldrich, “and we thought
we would throw something back to the
hospital in the form of a donation.”
“This wonderful leadership gift from the
IBEW illustrates the strong partnership
between Capital Health, the community, the

trade’s council and our contractors. With
IBEW’s strong support, Capital Health is
continuing to advance as a leader in health
care in the Central New Jersey region,
providing residents with optimal medical
care close to home,” said Samuel J. Plumeri,
Jr., Chairman, Capital Health Board of
Directors.
In recognition of their generosity, the Fireplace
Lounge area in the main entrance to Capital
Health Medical Center – Hopewell has been
named in their honor.

Garden Brings “Life” to Hopewell
While we have yet to experience the rooftop garden in full bloom, the CHAI Healing Garden at Capital Health
Regional Medical Center – Hopewell has already caught the attention of many visitors, patients and staff who
could be seen enjoying the recent abnormally warm November afternoons.
Studies show that the more we are engaged
with the environment through all our senses,
the lower are our rates of anxiety and the less
we are aware of pain. The CHAI Healing
Garden features a pergola, winding pathways,
two patios and an array of trees, shrubs,
plants, grasses and flowers that provide a
calming space for healing and contemplation.
It’s a space where patients can meet with their
families, an outpatient can wait for their
prescription, or staff can relax together
during lunch.
The rooftop garden, which can be viewed
from the hospital’s infusion center, also has
added environmental benefits of cooling and
water filtration.
The garden was named by the hospital’s
radiologists, Capital Health Advanced Imaging,
in recognition for their generous commitment
to The Campaign for Capital Health. Dr.
Yaakov Applbaum, Chairman of Radiology,
and his partners made a leadership pledge
of $225,000 to the effort.
“Being able to contribute to this historic
venture has been a privilege”, said Dr.
Applbaum. “When our group was given the
opportunity to dedicate a segment of the new
hospital, we were particularly excited when we
saw the rooftop garden, open to all, but
specifically located outside the chemotherapy
infusion center. As diagnostic and interventional radiologists, a very large portion of our
work is participating in the care of cancer
patients, be it making the initial findings on a
CT or MR, confirming the diagnosis using
image-guided biopsy, or being involved in
treatment, such as radio frequency tumor
ablation, for example.” Dr. Applbaum adds,
“Our acronym, CHAI, (
) means “Life”, in
Hebrew. It is fitting that this truly beautiful
healing garden of life help soothe the spirits
of patients, their families, and the dedicated
health workers devoted to their care.”
Campaign Donors Recognized In Hospital Atrium
Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell was built to create an environment designed to calm and comfort,
heal and nurture, protect and support.
It is a new kind of hospital that enhances the
patient experience, offering the highest level
of care in harmony with the environment.
It was this emphasis on environmental
awareness and the healing power of nature
that inspired The Campaign for Capital Health
donor recognition wall designed by Mitchell
Associates of Wilmington, Delaware. This
impressive piece hangs in the atrium of the
hospital across from the grand colored
pattern window wall.
4
“We wanted a recognition wall that would
thoughtfully acknowledge the leadership
support we received to the Campaign, inspire
others and also mesh with the beauty and
design of the building’s features and natural
surroundings”, said Arline Stephan, Executive
Director of Capital Health Foundation.
“Mitchell and Associates
has long-standing experience in donor recognition
and an impressive portfolio
of work at other health
care facilities. They
created a magnificent
structure that brings
harmony to the existing
beauty of the hospital.”
contributors whose names appear on its
panels. Other design components of this
display, like the custom aluminum dividers
and the decorative jewel-like tiles recall the
aesthetic of the stainless steel architectural
railing supports above and the modularity and
coloration of the grandly-scaled tinted glass
window wall opposite the display. Further
detailing of the display includes pale blue,
wave-sculpted modules (a visual reference to
the flow of the nearby Delaware River)
announcing the various gift levels of the
listed contributors and vertical, stone-colored
dividers which recall the coloration of the
beautiful, stacked-stone architectural pilasters
of the impressive, welcoming lobby atrium
space.
Since The Campaign for
Capital Health donor wall
is located in the open
4-story atrium, great care
was taken to create a
display which is
welcoming as well as
respectful of the
architectural scale of
the space. The forest imagery was chosen for
its lush green coloration and its visual metaphor
for healthful growth and strength in numbers,
so evident in the generosity of the many
“Our donors will forever be connected to this
new facility”, shared Jessica Besler, Director
of Development and Foundation Relations.
“Their support is recognized in such a way
that compliments the design of the hospital
and the natural habitat in which we are located.”
Consider a donation to Capital Health
Foundation. The names of those who
give $1,000 or more to The Campaign
for Capital Health by December 30, 2011
will be included on the donor wall.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company Supports Colorectal
Screening at Capital Health
Capital Health Foundation recently received a $50,000 grant from Bristol-Myers Squibb Company to continue the
Colorectal Cancer Screening and Education Program.
This program, which began in 2008 through a
partnership with the American Cancer Society
and was originally funded from a grant from
Bristol-Myers Squibb, helps Trenton residents
fight colon cancer through education and
screenings.
Thanks to this generous gift, Capital Health’s
Regional Cancer Center will be able to provide
free colonoscopies to 100 more medically
underserved patients in Trenton communities.
“Colorectal cancer is the third-most common
cancer diagnosed in both men and women
and frequently begins as a polyp that becomes
cancerous. Therefore, detecting and removing
a polyp at an early stage decreases the risk of
a cancer significantly,” said Rona Remstein,
RN, BSN, BA, Director of Oncology Services
at Capital Health. “However, many Trenton
residents are without health insurance so
regular cancer screenings are not an
affordable option.”
Health. “We succeeded in either curing those
with early colon cancer or prevented future
cancers from developing by removing
precancerous lesions.”
Based upon the Program's past outcomes,
Capital Health anticipates that between 40
and 50 percent of those screened will have
one or more polyps that need to be removed.
Between October 2008 and December 2010,
Capital Health performed a total of 360
colonoscopies made possible through the
original grant. They found that 25 percent of
patients had cancerous polyps.
“Bristol-Myers Squibb is pleased to support
Capital Health’s efforts to increase awareness
of colorectal cancer and provide screenings to
residents of the Trenton area,” said Frederick
J. Egenolf, Director, Community Affairs.
“Our goal is to reduce health disparities and
improve patient outcomes by strengthening
community efforts to make health care tools
available to those in need. By using our grant
to provide free colorectal cancer screenings,
Capital Health is helping hundreds of at-risk
patients who would otherwise have little or no
means of obtaining a potentially life-saving
procedure.”
“The first two years of this program helped
provide preventative health care in the form
of colon cancer screening,” said Dr. Armen
Simonian, a gastroenterologist at Capital

Tournament Raises $119,000
The Fourth Annual Dr. Abraham George Memorial Golf Tournament was held on June 15 at Mercer Oaks Golf
Course in West Windsor.
The event was a huge success and raised
more than $119,000 in support of Capital
Health's growth and expansion projects
including the new Capital Health Medical
Center - Hopewell and renovations at the
Capital Health Regional Medical Center.
The event welcomed over 220 golfers
including the voice of the Philadelphia Eagles,
Merrill Reese. This year’s tournament was
sponsored by BESLER Consulting.
“The success of this year’s tournament is
a testament to the exceptional event
experience our guests have had in the past,
to Dr. George’s memory and to the unyielding
vote of confidence that our family, friends and
business associates have in Capital Health,”
said Eric S. Poe, Esq, principal at NJ PURE and
tournament chairperson.
In addition to a great day on the links,
participants also enjoyed a cocktail reception,
dinner, skill prizes, a 50/50 contest, raffle and
silent auction of unique items and trips.
Tree Finds New Life at Hopewell Campus
The Tree of Life has been redesigned and relocated from the Mercer campus to the 5th floor patient tower lobby at
Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell.
For years, the traditional oak tree design,
crafted of brass leaves and stones, hung in
the lobby of the 7th floor Oncology unit. It
included the names of individuals who have
battled cancer and the special messages
from loved ones.
Instead of moving the existing tree to Capital
Health Medical Center – Hopewell, the
Foundation determined that it would be
best to redesign the piece to compliment
the architectural qualities of the new facility.
All existing leaves and stones from the tree
at Mercer were replaced with silver leaves in
three different sizes.
6
This new, refreshed approach uses imagery of
a spring flowering dogwood tree (which are
indigenous to the region) to honor and remember
our friends and loved ones. The Tree of Life
symbolizes the hope, courage
and gratitude of our patients,
their families and friends. All

Grant Support Important To Capital Health
Professional development for 37
Capital Health Foundation received several grants in 2010.
Scholarship support and book
Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. granted
$10,000 to the Foundation for a Comfort/
Sensory Room for Mental Health Patients
with Psychiatric Crisis. A Comfort / Sensory
room is a space that is designed to calm the
senses and expose the patient to visual,
auditory, olfactory and tactile stimuli. It is a
place where patients can engage in meaningful activities and staff can more effectively
teach calming techniques. It is used to
provide a supportive sensory environment
and to assist in the de-escalation and or
prevention of violence.
Novo Nordisk Inc. gave $10,000 for
Outpatient Diabetes Treatment and SelfManagement Education for low or no income
and the under or uninsured populations.
The grant will fund education resources and
supplies used for treating and teaching
management techniques to Trenton’s
underserved diabetic population.
Area VII Physicians Review Organization
generously contributed $5,000 for Capital
Health Regional Medical Center’s Convertible
Car Seat and Booster Seat Safety Education
Program. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Trauma
Center at Capital Health Regional Medical
Center Trauma Department offers child
safety seat check-ups two times a year to the
community. If necessary, a proper size car
seat is given to the family after it is properly
installed in their vehicle at the event.
CAPITAL HEALTH FOUNDATION
Additionally, the Trauma Educators present
the car seat program ”Let’s Buckle Up” to
pre-school groups. Upon assessing the
needs of each child during the program, an
appropriate booster seat is then given to the
child’s family for the safe travel of the child.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company recently
awarded the Capital Health Foundation a
$13,000 grant to fund start up costs and
medical equipment and supplies at a new
gynecological clinic. This new GYN Clinic
will provide outpatient surgical services, such
as colposcopies, endometrial biopsies,
cryotherapy, and loop electrosurgical excision
procedures. In addition, the new GYN Clinic
will provide STD screening, counseling
services, and contraception advice including
IUD insertions. The clinic will also act as a
vital screening venue for many other major
illnesses such as Hypertension and Obesity,
where patients will be referred to the
appropriate medical facilities.
The Walter and Louise Sutcliffe
Foundation funded Capital Health’s

and delivery. Without the generous grant
support from the Foundation, I would not
have been able to afford these critical
educational opportunities”, said Barbara
Mizenko, RNC-OB, C-EFM.
Marge Olkowski, RN, BSN, CPAN added,
“Thanks to the Capital Health Foundation,
I was able to attend a conference on PeriAnesthesia Nursing. As a result, I gained
important knowledge that helps me to
effectively manage a variety of clinical
situations in the PACU. The support from
the Nurse Education Fund helped me to find
better means to deliver nursing excellence to
the patient population we serve.”
Capital Women Make An Impact
We invite you to be counted among a group of smart, energetic, and
passionate women who care deeply about the health and wellness of the
communities served by Capital Health.
Become a part of a women’s giving circle
making strategic grants on behalf of Capital
Health Foundation.
Capital Women in Philanthropy (CWP) is a
women’s giving circle where female donors
pool their financial resources, learn about the
funding choices available at Capital Health
and collectively decide how the funds are
best used.
Since its inception, this group has become an
influential network of women who are leveraging
their philanthropic dollars to profoundly affect
the lives of patients and their families at
Capital Health. Capital Women have funded
programs in Wound Care Services, the NICU,
Pastoral Care, Oncology, Trauma Education
and Bereavement Services.
As a member of Capital Women in
Philanthropy, you will find that your own life
will be enriched as you enrich the lives and
health and well being of others.
Visit capitalhealth.org/foundation or call

The Campaign for Capital Health Donors
In early 2007, Capital Health Foundation began the quiet phase of a $25 million fundraising campaign in support of the two capital projects launched to
transform the delivery of health care in this region—the construction of our new, state-of-the-art hospital in Hopewell and significant renovations to Capital
Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.
Now, as this new, state-of-the-art hospital has opened its doors to the community and patient units at Regional Medical Center have been transformed, we
extend our deepest gratitude to every individual, family, corporation and foundation for helping to make these projects a reality. To date, more than $21.3
million in total gifts and pledges have been received to The Campaign for Capital Health.
The following list includes names of those who have made pledges and outright gifts to The Campaign for Capital Health through October 31, 2011. These
donations are beyond regular annual and event support.
There is still time to have your name appear on our Campaign Donor Wall and in our final printed list, scheduled to be produced in the early part of 2012.
To make a pledge or gift to The Campaign for Capital Health, please contact Arline Stephan, Executive Director of the Capital Health Foundation,
at 609-394-4115 or [email protected]
