UPPER ATMOSPHERE
Upper Atmosphere wind and temperature readings are made at Valentia Observatory
twice a day by a radiosonde (a balloon with instruments attached). Shown below are daily
average wind speeds and temperatures at defined pressure levels, 850, 700, 500 and
300 hPa, corresponding approximately to heights of 1.5, 3, 6 and 10 km. Monthly wind
roses are also shown for each pressure level.

pollutants combine with
moisture in the air to form
sulphuric or nitric acid. pH
is the simplest way of
measuring the acidity of
precipitation. Usually pH of
7.00 is considered neutral
but this is not the case in
rainfall samples. Pure
water in the atmosphere
has an equilibrium pH
value of 5.65 at 20°C owing
to carbon dioxide in the air
dissolving to form carbonic
acid. Any value below pH
5.65 is considered acid
while any value above is
considered alkaline.

Conductivity measures the
total ion activity in the
rainfall, i.e. the higher the
conductivity the greater
the number of ions.
NO2-N
SO2-S
SO4-S
Sulphur dioxide and
sulphate in air contribute
to the formation of
sulphuric acid; nitrate in
air contributes to the
formation of nitric acid.

above their Long-Term Average (LTA) in the western
half of the country. Differences from monthly LTA
ranged from -0.7°C at Dublin (Merrion Square) with a
monthly mean of 6.0°C to 0.9°C at Donegal stations
of Finner and Ballyshannon (Cathleen’s Fall) both
with a mean temperature of 6.5°C. December mean
temperatures ranged from 4.5°C (on average) at Slieve
Bloom Mtns (Nealstown), Co Laois to 8.5°C (0.6°C
from LTA) at Sherkin Island, Co Cork.
The majority of monthly mean air maximum
temperatures (average of highest daily maxima) were
above their LTA as much as 0.7°C, with exception of
some places in the East and Midlands which were
below LTA of around -0.5°C. Monthly highest
maximum temperatures were mainly on the 18th, 21st
and 31st and ranged from 11.2°C at Slieve Bloom
Mountains, Co Laois (on the 18th) to 15.0°C at
Mullagh (Carrowlagan), Co Clare (on the 31st).
Roche’s Point, Co Cork and Littleton, Co Tipperary
recorded maxima of 13.2°C and 14.0°C respectively,
their highest for December in seven years. The
majority of mean air minimum temperatures were
above LTA, with over 1°C above normal reported in
parts of the West and Northwest. However in parts of
the East, differences from mean minima were as much
as -1.0°C below what is expected fot the time of year.

GLOBAL WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS SUPPLIED
BY AON BENFIELD
A strong storm brought heavy rainfall to
much of California which resulted in flash flooding
and landslides. From North Carolina to Maine,
torrential rain turned to snow as temperatures
plummeted. Snow depth totals in excess of 45.7 cm.
Strong winds, flash floods, significant mountain snow,
and torrential rain along U.S. west coasts, worst
affected was California where rainfall totals reached
367.8 mm.
GLOBAL
WEATHER
SUMMARY
Severe winter weather affected parts of
Europe causing widespread destruction and claiming
five lives in France, three in Bulgaria, and one in
Slovenia. In the UK, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria,
transport delays and power outages were experienced,
while in France, 19 departments were on the second
highest alert for snow and ice.
Heavy rainfall in Colombia
led to a large mudslid, which resulted in
six fatalities were killed. The rainfall also
caused at least two major rivers to break
their banks damaging or destroying more
than 10 bridges and leaving nearly
25,000 residents displaced.
The North East Monsoon brought torrential rain
and strong winds to Sri Lanka causing flash floods and
landslides. Thirty nine people were killed and thousands of
homes were destroyed. Super Typhoon Hagupit came ashore in
Philippines as a Category three strength storm, killing at least
18 people and injuring 916 others. Peak winds reached
99.9 knots (185km/h). The government ordered the evacuation
of 1.2 million residents which saved many lives.
At least 11 people died in
Swaziland and five were killed in
Mozambique as torrential rainfall triggered
flash floods. Numerous homes were
destroyed while in Mozambique, at least
300 people were left homeless.
