Penobscot Bay YMCA
The mission of the Penobscot Bay YMCA is to
provide high quality services that meet the youth
development, healthy living and social needs of
individuals and families in the communities we serve.
The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children of all ages and walks of life
joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundation of community.
With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a
sense of social responsibility, the Y ensures that every individual has access to the essentials
needed to learn, grow and thrive. Anchored in more than 10,000 neighborhoods around the
country, the Y has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise,
but to deliver, lasting personal and social change.

We made a promise to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living
and social responsibility. Fulfilling this promise begins with staff and volunteer leaders
of all levels, understanding the promise and their role in fulfilling it.

“After completing my treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma I still felt sluggish and unwell. I knew
that exercise would help, but nothing appealed to me until a friend invited me to a yoga class at
the Y. I will be forever grateful for my friend introducing me to yoga, and to the Y staff for

“I developed the CONNECTIONS program in 2002 for parents and children in grades 3-4-5 in Knox
County and Lincolnville. This free program at the Y gives parents and kids from dozens of families
the chance to spend some special time together. We’re having fun while nurturing closer bonds
between the children and adults in a professionally facilitated, supportive environment. Without
the Y, this program would never happen.” - Hank

“I know how important it is to get proper nutrition and regular exercise, so I visit the Y three days
a week. Seeing people my age who are sedentary and unable to walk inspires me to stay active. I
work on strength with Group Power and Body Forging, and I’m almost 80!” - Eva

“The YMCA scholarship program allowed me to get back to a healthy, well rounded life. The Y
became a place where I could unload the cares of the day and feel energized. I use the Y as much
as I can, and I coach after-school sports programs. I come to the Y to be healthy and to compete,

more independence in a place where they are safe, supervised, and actively engaged.”

“When our childcare provider closed her doors on short notice, we and 22 other families were left
without anyone to look after our children. We asked the Y to extend its childcare program to the
Midcoast Recreation Center. The Y put together a plan practically overnight! After three days, we
were back at work, knowing that our children would be beautifully cared for. Our son loves his
friends and teachers at the Y’s MRC Childcare Program.” - Tiffany
introduced the LIVESTRONG® program, a new health initiative at the YMCA. Through this FREE twelve week
program, our Y is creating communities among cancer survivors and guiding them through safe physical
activity, helping them build supportive relationships and reducing stress – leading to an improved quality of life.

STRATEGIC PLAN
Your YMCA is working to meet a number of challenges in our community.
We continue to meet the evolving health needs of individuals of all ages in our service area, through high quality
programs, facilities and collaborations.
• Senior membership category has grown 30% since 2012.
• Offered over 2,000 free swim and wellness classes to YMCA members, in hopes of creating a healthier
community.
We remain financially viable in challenging times by raising revenues and controlling costs.
• Added three new families to the Heritage Society (YMCA Endowment).
• Generated 18% of total revenue via contributed sources.
• Reduced organizational debt by $30,000.
We seek to expand operational outreach and identify growth opportunities within our service area.
• Expanded Childcare offering to Mid-Coast Recreation Center.
• Added two additional senior exercise programming sites.
While we continue to have a lot to do, we enter this new phase with
confidence and excitement. Thank you for all of your support and

2013 HIGHLIGHTS:
• Community youth learned basic skills, made new friends, gained
strength and self-confidence by participating in a variety of sports
such as indoor soccer, sports club, basketball, lacrosse and a variety of other youth programs such as pee wee sports, and youth
rock climbing. These programs increased the activity, decreased
screen time, and encouraged a lifetime of healthy choices.
• The FREE Learn to Swim program continued to grow while offering
over 90 children in Knox County and Lincolnville the opportunity
to learn a life skill and have fun as they prepare for a summer of
fun. Members of our swim team also took the opportunity to
volunteer as instructors and gain valuable expertise around
teaching swim lessons and working with youth while developing
leadership abilities.
• The Sailfish and high school swim teams built lifelong relationships
and self-confidence, while competing in races all over the state.
Over160 swimmers not only enjoyed the challenge of competition
but learned a sport to help them remain physically active for the
rest of their lives and continued to have some of the top ranked
swimmers in the state.
• To meet the immediate needs of families in our community for a
safe and reliable childcare, the Y extended their childcare program
to the Midcoast Recreation Center (MRC). Since January 2013,
the number of children served has tripled at this new center and
continues to grow.
• By educating staff and families about making healthy choices,
such as cutting out sugar, decreasing screen time and increasing
physical activity, the Child Care program achieved the 5210 Let’s
Go! Gold Level award. This award shows a level of commitment to
helping our children grow up in a healthy and active environment.
• The Teen Center continued to offer free membership and programs
to youth in the grades five through twelve by providing a safe
environment to enjoy snacks and a variety of after school activities
such as healthy cooking classes, band, theatre, outdoor games and
just relaxing with friends. This center gives parents piece of mind
that their children are in a supervised environment with well
trained staff that will care for them.
KNOX COUNTY COMMUNITY HEALTH COALISTION (KCCHC)
An outreach program of the Penobscot Bay YMCA
• Youth and their parents had the opportunity to spend quality time
together in Boy’s Night Out, Daughter’s ‘n Dads, Moms & Sons and
the Girls Night Out programs. These programs served 120 youth in
grades 3-5.

• Educational messages such as substance abuse prevention, lead
poisoning prevention, increasing physical activity and good
nutrition were put on 3400 pizza box tops with support from
Rockland Pizza Hut.

lifestyles.
2013 HIGHLIGHTS:
• Families and friends had fun while challenging themselves
at several events during the year that drew over 500
hundred participants and volunteers. Races included the
Harbor View 5K, Hope Triathlon, and the Turkey Trot.
These races gave participants the opportunity to test
themselves physically and gather socially with others in
the community.
• Members were offered over 35 free weekly classes and a
variety of opportunities during the year that increased
their general well-being and fitness with an ever changing
variety of classes such as R.I.P.P.E.D., heated Yoga and
expanded cycle and Group Power schedules. In addition
they were provided guidance, support and extra motivation
through personal training opportunities.
• Seniors in Knox County were challenged to continue to
improve their fitness and overall well-being. Thanks to
funding from the John T. Gorman Foundation, two new
offsite senior fitness locations were added and the pilot
program “Time-Out Tuesday” was established to increase
social opportunities and overall well-being.

• Adult cancer survivors were offered the unique opportunity
to build supportive relationships, achieve physical and
emotional wellness while increasing their quality of life
through our new LIVESTRONG
STRONG® at the YMCA program.
This free 12 week program is designed to introduce
survivors to new wellness opportunities such as Qi Gong,
rock climbing, yoga and aromatherapy as well as traditional
wellness methods.
• Hundreds of members increased their quality of life through
a variety of health impacting classes. Through classes such
as our Arthritis class, Hydro Fit, Aqua Blast and Liquid
Toning, our members were able to focus on maintaining
their strength, balance, and cardiovascular fitness while
developing relationships with other class participants. In
addition, several of the Masters Swim Team were on a
World Record Relay team in the national championships.
KNOX COUNTY COMMUNITY HEALTH COALISTION (KCCHC)
An outreach program of the Penobscot Bay YMCA
• Collaborated with Pen Bay Healthcare Center to provide
free tobacco cessation classes to 55 Knox County
residents.
• The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program –
Education (SNAP-ED) – provided nutrition education to
275 youth, individual and families through programs such
as Cooking Matters, Cooking Matters at the Store, Pick A
Better Snack and Act, Eat Well Play Hard and Single Session
Nutrition Classes.

2013 HIGHLIGHTS:
• Dedicating countless hours of their time, talent and
treasure through fundraising events, committees and
campaigns, twenty-two local individuals volunteered
to serve on our Board of Directors.
• The core of our existence is through the generosity of
those who give to our Annual Support Campaign. With
the support of over 476 donors, we were able to
provide more than $212,000 in financial assistance
which impacted 2,965 children and individuals.
• As an ally and advocate for our communities, last year
through our strong partnerships and collaborations with
over 164 local businesses, corporations and foundations
we were able to expand our impact on issues such as
childhood obesity, education and the overall health and
well-being of our community.
• The Y’s mission is to keep membership and programming
accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial
capacity. Through the Membership for All program
(MFA) the Y served over 1800 individuals.
• Nearly 4690 free healthy lunches were provided to
low income youth and families living in Knox County
with thanks to RSU 13, the USDA and the
John T. Gorman Foundation.
• In collaboration with John Burstein and the Everyman
Repertory Theatre, a production of “Dracula” entertained
audiences of all ages for six shows. Teen Center
members and volunteers baked, ushered, sold tickets
and worked behind the scenes raising money to support
the Y’s LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA Program and Teen
Center.
KNOX COUNTY COMMUNITY HEALTH COALITION (KCCHC)
An outreach program of the Penobscot Bay YMCA
• 140 community members returned more than 150
pounds of medications that included more than 7000
doses of Controlled Substances in collaboration with
Rockland Police Department, Knox County EMA, and
Rockland District Nursing to sponsor 2 (spring and fall)
Medication Return Events in Knox County.
• Offered Responsible Beverage Trainings (RBS) to
50 Knox County employees (both on premise and
off-premise alcohol retailers), plus additional training
for West Bay Rotary – National Toboggan Races.

Financial Assistance
Penobscot Bay YMCA membership and programs are available to everyone,
regardless of their ability to pay. During 2013, the Y returned over $215,000
in mission services to the community in the form of direct financial assistance
to individuals and families as well as subsidized programs.

Gives a child the opportunity to participate in an after school youth sports program
where they will be taught positive values, team work and fair play in a supportive
environment.

Allows a senior with low-income the opportunity to experience a fun and supportive
class that teaches muscular strength, range of movement and balance that they might
not have experienced for years.

Provides active duty military families one month of an annual membership, allowing them
to spend quality time together and enjoy fun activities in a supportive environment while
there loved one is serving our country.

Provides two weeks of healthy snacks for local youth afterschool at the Teen Center.
Here, children are welcome to come relax after school, watch a movie, get help with
homework, play Wii, shoot some hoops, join in an art class, make some music and new
friends, or just hang out...free of charge.

Allows a local child a fun-filled week of transportation, meals, positive role models,
exciting activities and character development during our summer camp program….an
experience that lasts a lifetime.

Provides a neighbor with a session of LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA as well as other
community health initiatives. This FREE twelve-week program for cancer survivors helps
build supportive relationships and reduce stress - leading to an improved quality of life.
