The new service has been developed in response to the changing working patterns of our customers and is available throughout Great Britain, 365 days a year. Stuart Wild, Area Operations Manager for Hewden said: “The traditional ‘Monday to Friday’ working hours are becoming a thing of the past. Customers are now working longer days and in some cases - particularly To improve the efficiency of our service team, we have also invested in over 200 new vehicles, which are now being rolled out across our depot network. The new fleet includes the Volkswagen Caddy, featuring a 1.6L low-emission diesel engine, and the fuel-efficient Ford Transit Trend. To help meet the Freight Transport Association’s (FTA) recommendations for the safe loading of vans, we made the decision that this new fleet should be fitted with professional racking and restraint straps, as well as full steel bulkheads. This interior racking system from Bott Ltd is fully re-useable, meaning that when an old vehicle is decommissioned, the equipment can be removed, adapted and re-installed into a new vehicle, avoiding the need for new systems to be manufactured. FACT The AA recommend checking tyres, antifreeze and screenwash weekly to make travelling in the winter safer. For further winter driving advice from the HSE go to page 12. Our starting point is to think carefully about the products and resources we need and use, as buying the right amount saves on materials and creates less waste. The Waste Hierarchy Preferred Environmental Option Reduce Re-use Recycle Energy Recovery Disposal Least Preferred Environmental Option When deciding the best way to deal with waste, we refer to the waste hierarchy, which is the nationally recognised approach to waste management, and forms the basis of the Government’s Waste Strategy. It sets out the best practical environmental options for dealing with waste. As you go down the list the environmental impact increases. Hewden has seen great success over the past few years, working in partnership with the OSS Group to minimise the environmental impact of waste disposal to ensure all hazardous waste produced is recycled (including waste oil, oily rags / granules, and oil filters to name a few examples). Significant improvement has been made in recycling hazardous waste through 2008 - 2009 (80%), 2010 (90%) and currently in 2011 we have recycled 100% of hazardous waste through OSS. RECYCLING MADE EASY So how have we achieved 100% recycling of hazardous waste? To take an example, the waste oil collected by OSS from our depots is put through advanced technological processes to produce NexGen, a highly refined, recycled fuel oil that is reused in the traditional road stone industry and boiler fuel markets. For more information on Hewden’s management of waste please visit www.hewden.co.uk/corporate/eh_and_s/ WACKY RAFTERS The WaterAid Raft Race is an annual event organised by Thames Water to raise money for WaterAid – a charity that helps to provide safe water, sanitation, hygiene and education to people in the poorest parts of the world. Hewden were pleased to sponsor Black & Veack’s 6-strong ‘Amp Hill Mob’, who took to the waters dressed to embrace this years’ Wacky Rafters’ theme. The ‘Mob’ designed, built and decorated their own raft with which to compete over the mile course and after paddling their hearts out, finished a very respectable 8th overall, raising more than £1,325 in the process. Infrastructure Working for the UK’s largest water and sewerage company brings its own set of unique challenges, requiring fast equipment turnaround, exacting product specifications and a team of expertly trained operators and support staff. We are now receiving an average of 30 enquiries a day to provide equipment on a supply–only or operated basis, including specially trained personnel who have been through Thames Water’s own health and safety and environment course. Here are just some of the ways we are helping to ensure the supply of 2,600 million litres of tap water to 8.8 million customers every day. Delivery Four ‘tier one’ contractor consortiums are responsible for the procurement and order of equipment. We’ve set up a dedicated point of contact at our Dartford depot, from where we handle deliveries from 10 other depots across our network. Requirements We adhere to stringent SLAs which range from emergency response within four hours through to planned maintenance. Equipment Machinery is specified to a high standard and includes trackers, twin locking quick hitches, safe lift devices, rubber tracks for working in residential areas and toothless buckets to avoid damage to gas and electricity lines. All dumpers also have to be road legal, including road tax and lighting system. COMPLEMENTARY HIRE SOLUTIONS Hewden has signed a one-year supplier agreement with Volker Fitzpatrick and VolkerHighways. The contract includes the supply of five of Hewden’s product categories, complementing their businesses’ in-house plant capabilities. Jeff Mattick, National Account Manager said: “We have worked closely with the companies’ supply chain management teams to ensure our service matches their operational needs. Our large and diverse fleet of equipment allows us to provide VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerHighways with practical and cost-effective solutions to its equipment rental requirements. Kevin Parkes, said, “We chose machines that would provide all of the features our customers expect, such as double-locking quick hitch mechanisms, tracker devices and CESAR identification to name a few. There are only 35 machines to be delivered now and, with customer demand growing by the day, our depots are eagerly awaiting their arrival! Construction “Feedback from the marketplace has been very positive, with customers in all of our key market sectors hiring the new equipment.” IDYLLIC CONSTRUCTION Hewden machines from our Inverness depot have been hired to work on a house being built in a peaceful location overlooking a vast loch in Scotland. However, Hewden machines may not be the only disruption to this tranquil landscape, as the area isn’t best known for just its beauty and vast loch but for the myths of what lies beneath the surface of the loch – Nessie the Loch Ness monster. Cold weather and shorter periods of daylight mean there is an increased risk of accidents. However, with a little planning and common sense, these can be avoided. In preparation for the clocks going back and winter approaching, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has offered some timely guidance to ensure workers remain safe during the colder and darker months ahead. Operators of construction plant, such as excavators, telehandlers, cranes etc must ensure they regularly clean their windows so they can safely see all around. This should be combined with constant use of mirrors and a banksman where appropriate. Lights on all vehicles should be cleaned regularly to ensure vehicles are visible at all times, and vehicle depots should be well lit to avoid slip and trip hazards. Considerations when Driving; 1. Consider if you have the skills to drive in the prevailing weather conditions Remember that there will be a number of low experience drivers encountering poor conditions for the first time. Are you one of them? Are the conditions likely to worsen beyond your experience? 2. Don’t travel if you don’t have to Check the prevailing weather conditions with the Highways Agency website. If you must travel consider alternative transport, keep your route to main roads. 3. Ensure the vehicle is serviced and in good working order Use a winter checklist such as the one available on the AA website. If you are unsure about a fault do not use the vehicle. 4. Ensure you take precautions Make sure you have enough fuel for your journey. Let someone know where you are going and your expected arrival time. Carry some winter clothing, mobile phone, some food and water. Get your vehicle warmed up and de-misted before setting off. Take frequent breaks. If the weather worsens, seriously reconsider the journey. Always be prepared to re-plan the route and do not try to ‘push on’. Have the breakdown contact numbers available or on your phone. 6. Only fools break the Two Second Rule This rule is great for good weather, alert drivers and good tyre grip, but not poor conditions or when driving in the dark. Leave four times more space in the wet and up to 10 times more on snow and ice. CYCLING BACK TO HEALTH 7. Driving in Freezing Conditions Ensure good visibility and lights/screens are not masked by ice. Slow down – posted speeds are for ideal travel conditions. Steer with slow precise movements, braking should be soft and planned early, use a lower gear to move off and be gentle on the accelerator. 8. Winter driving whilst tired Driving in the dark is more demanding than daylight driving; add to this the demands of poor weather conditions fatigue increases significantly. Plan your journey and schedule stops to allow for this. 9. Winter driving watch points Bridges freeze first as there’s no insulation under the road surface and shaded areas remain frozen longer. Vehicle tracks will be compacted with snow and possibly icy. Lights and visibility will be steadily impaired. Obey all traffic signs and warnings and beware of increased road maintenance vehicle activity and the inappropriate actions of other drivers. 10.If you get stranded Stay in the vehicle unless help is available close by. It is easy to underestimate distance and become disorientated. Occasionally run the engine to keep warm and put on all clothing. Keep moving to maintain circulation, clapping hands and stamping feet. Do not go to sleep. Use your mobile to contact help - if no signal run the engine and use external and /or internal lights to give six measured flashes every one minute then turn off the lights in between. Sky Ride is a national campaign from Sky and British Cycling, created to inspire and help everyone whatever their age or ability to get on their bikes. In 2010, over 200,000 people took part in free-mass participation rides all over the UK and this year it’s even bigger, with a goal to get one million people back on their bikes by 2013. Here he talks about his role and how it signals Hewden’s commitment to customer service excellence. Customers, culture and capability. Just a short conversation with Mark Albiston and there can be no doubt over Hewden’s customer focus. “There are three aspects, ‘cornerstones’ if you will, that explain how we are improving service delivery to the marketplace. Customers at the core The first of these is, unsurprisingly, our customer base. Whether we deal with a customer on a simple transactional basis where a one-off hire is required, or whether we have developed a long-term partnership with one of the country’s leading blue chip organisations, the core requirements are constant. Factors such as ensuring we send the right equipment, to the right place at the right time are really important if we are to deliver a good customer experience. This importance is not graded by the size or complexity of the hire requirement – it’s about making sure that our customers get the service they need to get the job done. Operationally, this means that we are always looking at new ways to improve our service delivery. So for example, we continually assess our hire depot network to ensure we have a structure that’s fit for the future and where customers are assured of consistent service whether they are based in Bournemouth, Birmingham or Barnsley. This of course covers the more basic areas such as lead times and equipment availability, but it’s also about helping customers to use the equipment they are hiring more effectively so that we deliver better value. FIND MORE NEWS AND JOIN US AT The right culture Our second cornerstone deals with our own culture. It’s really about making sure that our approach to doing business is aligned with our customers’ needs. Naturally, some of these ‘needs’ are driven by legislative or environmental concerns which we routinely feed into our development plans along with the aspiration to make Hewden a responsible company to do business with. For example, we have embedded many processes across the business; from robust health and safety practices, to a companywide corporate social responsibility initiative, which encompasses our impact on the environment and the communities in which we operate. WWW.HEWDENFIT.CO.UK This approach has seen Hewden invest considerably over the last year in its product portfolio. This investment includes equipment such as the JCB 3CX Eco excavators and additions to the transport fleet. It’s helping us to reduce our carbon emissions…and to pass on energy savings to our customers. It’s fair to say that as an organisation that trades responsibly, Hewden is obliged to adhere to these operating principles and in that respect, we are delivering precisely what our customers would expect. In my new role, I am also looking at how we build an operation that delivers more customer value. In other words, one that is fit to exceed customer expectations. 15 / Interview / Mark Albiston AND CAPABILITY “IT’S REALLY ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT OUR APPROACH TO DOING BUSINESS IS ALIGNED WITH OUR CUSTOMERS’ NEEDS.” So for example, we have just launched our new 24-hour, breakdown service to ensure that for those customers that need it, we have the backup in place to respond at any time. (You can read more about this new service on page three). This service is not intended to replace our existing maintenance regimes and predelivery inspections. It’s there to support our customers that are using equipment outside of normal business hours. Capability at every corner The final cornerstone is all about Hewden’s capability to deliver consistent service levels to all its customers. Our depot network is a critical part of this delivery and many of our larger customers have already moved to a single-point-of-contact. This approach - where all of their hire requirements are based in one of our larger depots - works really well. We are able to build a team which intimately understands our customer’s needs, so hiring equipment becomes quicker and easier all round.” When asked if he is enjoying his new role at Hewden, Mark is enthusiastic in his response, “There’s a solid wealth of experience within the Hewden organisation. Customers come to us because we are experts in our field. By building on this talent and by refining our service delivery, I believe we will continue to deliver a great customer experience and develop a business that’s fit for tomorrow… and beyond!” PLEASE PASS THIS MAGAZINE ON TO A COLLEAGUE AND ASK THEM TO JOIN US AT WWW.HEWDENFIT.CO.UK 16 / Fit Together / Charity CFO PEDALS 185 MILES IN CHARITY BIKE RIDE Darren Woods, Hewden CFO, smashed his £1,000 target for the East Cheshire Hospice by raising £1,651. You might think you’re doing everything you can to prevent slips, trips and falls in your workplace, but everyone can do more. Hewden work closely with IPAF to provide the right training courses to fully equip your workforce with the necessary knowledge and skills to prevent accidents from happening when working at height. In the words of IPAF CEO Tim Whiteman “We congratulate Hewden on its proactive approach to selling the safety message - Getting these yellow IPAF category and Clunk Click stickers on the fleet signals the importance of proper training and wearing harnesses on booms. The powered access sector can only get stronger if the industry gets behind training and safety initiatives with one voice.” IPAF Training: The IPAF training programme for platform operators is certified by TÜV as conforming to ISO 18878. More than 80,000 operators are trained each year through a worldwide network of over 450 training centres. Training generally lasts one to two days and is a mixture of theory and practice. Gaining your PAL Card: Those who successfully complete IPAF training are awarded the PAL Card (Powered Access Licence), the most widely held and recognised proof of training for platform operators. The PAL Card is valid for five years and shows the machine categories that the operator has been trained in. It also features the holder’s photo and signature, and can be verified by calling IPAF. What is IPAF? FACT The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF)promotes the safe and effective use of powered access worldwide. Set up in 1983, IPAF is a not-for-profit members’ organisation that represents the interests of manufacturers, distributors, users, rental and training companies. It serves as a forum for all active in the world of powered access. IPAF has played a key role in promoting many of the design, safety and testing procedures that are now established in the powered access industry. Hewden had also gone public and now grown further with the take-over of Scottish Land. At the time of the takeover, Gordon Anderson left Scottish Land to buy Clyde Diesel - a Glasgow Plant Hire Company and formed a heavy earthmoving company with which to go head to head with Hewden Stuart Ltd. “This was a challenging time to be with Hewden” explains John. “Our biggest customer was the National Coal Board and these contracts were now being targeted by Clyde Diesel. YEARS IN THE LIFE OF... JOHN HAMILTON AREA SALES MANAGER. In 1972 John was asked to set up a depot in the new town of Irvine, Ayrshire, where he quickly built up a profitable earthmoving depot with Hewden’s own transport and plant operators. 1979 saw a move into the role of Plant Manager of AV Wilson, a division which operated a fleet specialising in the hire of large hydraulic excavators from its base at Motherwell. An incredible amount has changed in the equipment hire industry over the past forty-plus years, but there aren’t many who have been involved in it continuously for that long. One such individual is John Hamilton, Hewden Area Sales Manager, based at our Glasgow depot. “I started as a Management Trainee in August 1964 with Scottish Land Development Corporation (SLDC) at Queenslie, Glasgow. The five- year training scheme was the brainchild of Scottish Land Director, Gordon Anderson, who later went on to start the GAP Group. Scottish Land was a plant hire company with a specialist landscaping division and an earthmoving contracts division. In addition to hiring equipment, they also sold plant machinery and were agents for Michigan Wheeled Shovels, AEC Dumptrucks, Fiat Traxcavators and Dozers, and Sykes Pumps.” John tells us “In 1969 I completed the scheme and secured a position in the plant hire side of the business, working on the hire desk. It was around this time that Scottish Land was sold to James Hanson (of the Hanson Trust) who retained the equipment sales side of the business, but quickly sold off the plant hire side to Hewden. Frank Jamieson had worked for Scottish Land until 1963, when he left to set up Hewden. Who would have thought that six years later, he would be buying the company he used to work for as plant manager.” Sir Mathew Goodwin was an accountant and financial guru who started Hewden along with Frank Jamieson. The rise of Hewden in the early sixties was due to Frank Jamieson seeing the opportunities and Sir Mathew financing them and buying companies at the right price. He was to become the darling of the stock market with his acquisitions and the rapid rise of Hewden during the 70’s and 80’s and at its peak making 44 million in the early 90’s. “Skip forward a few years to 2009 and with the amalgamation of various depots, I was asked to take on a sales role within Hewden. This continues to be where I direct my efforts today - looking after some of the biggest spending accounts in Scotland.” This was a remarkable time for Hewden – in its first six years it built up a fleet of heavy earthmoving machines, started a compressor PLEASE PASS THIS MAGAZINE ON TO A COLLEAGUE AND ASK THEM TO JOIN US AT WWW.HEWDENFIT.CO.UK 20 / Careers APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR The National Construction College honoured it’s brightest Scottish apprentices at its annual awards ceremony at the College’s campus in Inchinnan, Renfrewshire on 24th June 2011.
