Ask staff at your local library how you can become a Friend of the Coweta Public Library System. Welcome to the Coweta Public Library System’s 2011 One World, Many Stories Summer Reading Program! This year’s themes and programs are sure to bring enjoyment and lasting memories for children, teens and adults. Our programs are designed to uniquely connect with local communities. Children’s programs focus on developing and sustaining the love of reading and learning; teen programs create a blend of sustaining knowledge and learning new skills, while adult and family programs foster a renewed interest in exploring their world as an individual or family. Now I must admit; some of our programs are pure entertainment – It’s Summer Time ENJOY! Books and BBQ will include the following programs and presentations: David Groff Editor/Poet Mama Koku—Storyteller Around the World in Stories - Tales take the audience from Africa, to Europe, to Asia, The Islands and The Americas. Haywood Smith—Bestselling Author Visit with the New York Times Bestselling Author, Haywood Smith, whose books include "Queen Bee of Mimosa Branch," "The Red Hat Club and "Wedding Belles." The author will speak about her life, her books, and the writing process. A book-signing will follow. Mama Koku Story Teller David Groff—Editor/Poet David Groff, an editor with more than 28 years experience in New York publishing, will present: “Mastering the Publishing Business: A Roadmap for Writers,” focusing on the subtopics “Reaching the Gatekeepers,” “Reaching Readers,” and “the Writer as entrepreneur.” One Hour Drummer—Drum Circle One Hour Drummer is an interactive world percussion performances with up to 15 band members. The program will included a wide variety of music styles from African to Japanese STOMP styled drumming “URBAN TAIKO”. Haywood Smith Bestselling Author Delbert Hewitt, Jr.—Comic Artist Delbert, is a freelance artist, has completed work in acrylics, oils, watercolour, cross hatching, black and white, sequential art, and character designs. The artist will present a drawing workshop for teens. Lee Bryan—Puppeteer Travelin’ Tales—Timeless tales from India, China, and Native American Indian lore is given new life through the magic of puppetry. One Hour Drummer Drum Circle Self-Publishing Marketplace Preschool Program—Teffeny Edmondson , children’s story teller, librarian, and school media specialist, will tell stories and sing songs uniquely designed for preschoolers. Summer 2011 2 Schedule of Programs for Coweta Public Library Musician—Jimmy Bass has been a performing musician for over half of his life. Since his first gig at a popular hometown club, he has played guitar and sang for weddings, birthdays, charity events, concerts and public library events. Multi-Cultural Crafts Africa: In Africa, create an traditional Butterfly Mask. Australia: In Australia, design a didgeridoo. North America: In North America, construct a medicine pouch or totem pole. South America: In South America, craft a rain stick. Europe: In Europe, design a crown and shield. Asia: In Asia, learn to write Chinese characters. She will perform one of her classics using instruments and audience participation. Miscreants, mischief and misunderstandings make for marvelous stories from around the globe. Like all good stories, these encompass universal themes—community, identity, love, responsibility. Summer 2011 KOPP’S KRITTERS “Reptiles from Around the World” PETER HART “The International Puppet Show” May 24 - Grantville June 7 - Powell May 31 - Senoia July 26 - Central Kopp's Kritters will present a variety of snakes and turtles from around the world for everyone to enjoy learning about and getting up close and personal with them. It will be filled with music, fun, and audience interaction/participation! It’s an exhilarating view of other cultures and a masterful display of the art of puppetry. Comedy, Magic, and Music all come together to create a hilarious message that is perfectly tailored for little audiences. The kids are always the stars of the show ! Enjoy tales that take the audience from Africa, to Europe, to Asia, The Islands and The Americas. BILL PACKARD “Around the World in 40 Minutes” NATURE CORNERS “Terrific Turtles” June 14 - Central June 21 - Powell July 19 - Senoia June 28 - Grantville July 26 - Powell Nature Center will feature reptile expert Connie Haynes of Nature Corners to discuss the amazing characteristics of snakes and turtles. Children will learn about the world through reading with the help of Colonel Bill's Magical Flying Machine using multi-media, magic, music, comedy, puppetry, and audience participation. Summer 2011 Native and exotic snakes, turtles will be available to observe and touch. No venomous snakes will be present. JULIE GALLE BAGGENSTOSS “The Story of Ferdinand” KEMP JONES “Follow - Story of a Lost Cat” June 21 - Central July 12 - Grantville July 19 - Central The program includes a reading of this children’s favorite, flamenco dance demonstration, and a free flamenco dance lesson for kids. A lifelong dancer, Julie Baggenstoss learned flamenco from teachers in Spain and the United States. F.O.L.L.O.W.: The Story of a Lost Cat, Found Cat, Lost Cat, Found Cat...? tells the story of a little lost cat and Stone, the boy who finds him. Baby time is designed for one-on-one sharing of books, songs, and rhymes between babies up to 24 months and caregivers. Now preschoolers have their own movie time. Join the Central Library, each week to view a short film featuring some of preschooler’s favorite characters including Dora, Tinkle Bell, and Bob the builder. Created for children aged 24mths – 36mths – this innovative, interactive program combines the best of traditional story time with learning stations designed to stimulate curiosity, learning and fun. This themed story time for preschoolers includes stories, songs, games, and an arts and crafts activity to complement the stories. (Groups are welcomed registration required.) Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Lap time is a free 30-minute program (Grantville) which meets once a week for about 8June 21 12 weeks. It is designed for a 2 year July 5, 26 old and an adult working together. Kuchipudi Dance Workshop Teen (Ages 13-17 years) First Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. (Powell) June 7 Samantha July 5 Kit Sasikala Penumarthi is the Founder/ Director of the Academy of Kuchipudi Dance, Inc. and has been instructor for many years. The Kuchipudi Dance tells stories of the exotic and rich, history and culture of India. This workshop will offer students an opportunity to learn and experience some of the Kuchipudi gestures and movements while telling a story. Begun in the temples and monasteries of ancient China, Tai Chi is an internal martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits.
