trend.!Young!readers!are!familiar!with!the!framework,!and!they!believe!that!
people!of!every!age!have!the!power!to!influence!their!worlds.!!!

Gathering!–!Music,!Opening!Activity!
The!designated!spy!appears!with!a!dramatic!revealing!of!the!day’s!clue.!Today!it’s!a!briefcase!
containing!mustard!seeds!and!seed!packets.!
Going!Deeper!–!children!go!to!designated!classrooms,!receive!a!tYshirt,!and!using!their!decoders,!
begin!to!build!a!poster!about!what!the!kingdom!of!God!might!be!like.!
Presentation!–!The!parable!of!the!Mustard!Seed.!!
Response!–!The!classes!have!a!variety!of!craft!and!musical!response!options!to!explore!the!
lesson!further.!This!week!includes!planting!seeds,!making!mustard,!and!crafting!a!necklace.!
Service!–!Classes!gather!back!together!to!“grow!God’s!kingdom”!by!creating!lunches,!using!mustard,!
to!show!that!from!this!small!gathering!of!folks,!lots!and!lots!of!people!can!be!fed.!And!doing!so!
anonymously!reinforces!the!mystery![key!word]!of!God!feeding!the!world.!
Closing!–!Review!the!lesson!with!good!wondering!time!together,!sing!the!song!of!your!choice,!say!
your!prayers,!and!hand!out!Sunglasses!as!the!children!leave.!!

clamshell!with!a!giant!pearl!inside.!
Going!Deeper!–!children!go!to!designated!classrooms!and,!using!their!decoders,!continue!working!on!
their!poster!about!what!the!kingdom!of!God!might!be!like.!
Presentation!–!The!parable!of!the!Pearl!Merchant!!
lesson!further.!This!week!includes!creating!multiple!clamshell!with!pearl!magnets!and!
Anglican!Prayer!beads.!!
Service!–!A!nursing!home!has!been!designated!to!receive!the!crafts!the!children!have!created.!
Following!lunch,!children!are!deployed!to!the!nursing!home!with!VBS!chaperones!to!visit.!This!
reinforces!the!value![key!word]!of!relationships.!
Closing!–!Either!in!a!space!at!the!nursing!home,!or!upon!return!to!the!VBS!location,!participants!
review!the!lesson!with!good!wondering!time!together,!sing!the!song!of!your!choice,!say!your!
prayers,!and!take!home!the!crafts!they!made!for!themselves.!!!

crafting!pretzels.!
Service!–!Classes!are!invited!to!make!“extra”!communion!bread!–!enough!for!use!the!following!
Sunday!in!their!own!parish,!and!to!share!with!another!congregation;!possibly!that!of!a!child!who!is!
visiting!the!VBS!from!another!parish.!This!reinforces!the!growing![key!word]!of!God’s!kingdom.!!!
Closing!–!Review!the!lesson!with!good!wondering!time!together,!showing!them!the!changes!in!the!
dough!from!the!opening!activity.!!Sing!the!song!of!your!choice,!say!your!prayers,!and!hand!out!the!

We!used!these!three!parables!and!had!clues!to!help!us!
look!at!and!learn!something!about!the!Kingdom!of!God.!!

Each!day,!we!had!the!following:!!

Opening!
A!priest!was!wearing!a!trench!coat,!hat,!sunglasses,!and!
carrying!a!brief!case.!Check!out!our!guy!on!the!right!!
Inside!the!case!was!a!clue!for!the!day.!!
!
On!the!first!day,!the!briefcase!had!several!packets!of!
seeds.!!
!
On!the!second!day,!a!large!plastic!oyster!looking!dip!tray!
with!a!white!plastic!ball!glued!into!it,!to!look!like!a!pearl.!This!spy!(obviously!a!female!priest)!
wore!her!pearl!necklace,!earrings,!and!bracelet.!!
!
On!the!third!day,!a!small!packet!of!yeast!was!inside.!!
!
These!“clues”!were!not!expounded!on!in!relation!to!the!story.!Just!general!information!was!
given!each!time.!(See!the!lesson!plans.)!

In!the!Room!–!a!decoder!and!clue!to!
discover.!!

Each!classroom!had!a!piece!of!poster!
board!and!the!words!“What!is!the!
Kingdom!of!God!like?”!When!they!
completed!the!decoder,!they!had!a!clue.!
This!would!be!written!on!the!board.!Then!
they!would!discuss!this!word!and!what!
else!it!could!mean.!These!words!were!also!
added!to!the!board.!!

Music!played!an!important!part!of!our!opening.!The!children!were!taught!the!notes!from!
